From rivalry to partnership: Ronaldo and Topuria’s surprising alliance

Ronaldo has a contract with Al-Nassr that runs until 2027 and is expected to lead Portugal to global glory during the World Cup in 2026. However, before that, he remains determined to inspire Al-Nassr to the Saudi Pro League title that has remained elusive since he moved to the Middle East. They are currently at the top of the league standings with 27 points from nine matchdays and will return to action against Al-Najma on December 21. 

Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly responded to the chance to merge with Sheffield United by their most unexpected takeover candidates yet.

Kris Wigfield sends fresh Sheffield Wednesday warning

The Owls have set a soft deadline of December 5 and have received proof of funds from several candidates as they look to narrow their list down to those ready to launch worthwhile bids.

The gravity of their situation was slammed home by their defeat in the Steel City derby last weekend, with Sheffield United brushing them to one side in dominant fashion. Destined for League One after their points deduction, Sheffield Wednesday desperately need their takeover to go to plan.

Co-administrator Kris Wigfield admitted after that defeat that there may be more difficult news on the way, too. He told the club’s social media accounts: “It will not be like this forever.

“At the same time, I have to be honest: there may be more difficult news coming, including the possibility of a further points deduction. I want to be upfront about that because our supporters deserve transparency. But I also want to be clear: the period between now and January should be as tough as it gets.”

Reports have already mentioned a number of names among the takeover candidates, including former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley. The former Magpies chief is seemingly looking to get back into English football and could restore his reputation at Hillsborough. But he’s not the only candidate.

John McEvoy has also been mentioned since Sheffield Wednesday entered administration and it will be interesting to see if he’s among the final names. What is for sure is that he’s unlikely to be joined on the final list of names by those at Bramall Lane who reportedly offered a shock merger.

Owls respond to Sheffield United offer

As reported by the Telegraph, Sheffield United’s American owners were among the Sheffield Wednesday takeover candidates and were planning to merge the two clubs if their approach was successful. To no surprise, the Owls quickly shut that down and have been fortunate enough to have plenty of interest from elsewhere.

Not many at Hillsborough believed it could get worse than Dejphon Chansiri, but a merger with Sheffield United would be their nightmare scenario.

It would take their club from administration to the very end. It would end a historic rivalry and change the landscape of football in Sheffield. The Owls, thankfully, saw sense and shut down any idea of a merger or takeover by the Blades’ American owners.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are being challenged to reach the knockout stages on home soil, but there will be “no shame” in falling short if they come unstuck against a heavyweight rival such as England or Brazil.

There is no shame in getting knocked out to Brazil or England. It just happens. For me, it’s the manner in which it would happen.

That’s why I think over a three-game period in the group stages, they can get out of the group – that’s what I expect. After that, unfortunately no matter how hard you compete against some of the teams at the World Cup – that’s why so few have won it over the history of the tournament – it’s difficult to win it.   “I would say that the team is definitely capable of – with the talent that they have and I know how Mauricio works – getting to the quarter-finals. We’ll see after that because then it becomes really hard.

  “Sometimes you are going to need luck or penalties or sendings off, or whatever it is. Look at all the great England teams that have been so close. Talent-wise, playing with them and against them, they have had the talent to win a World Cup. For whatever reason, they haven’t been able to finish it off.”

  Quizzed on whether Lionel Messi and Argentina would be a dream draw or whether it is best to avoid the elite for as long as possible, Friedel added: “You are going to get at least one of the best in your group. Back in ‘94, we were lucky to get out of the group but really unlucky because we had two European countries. We had Switzerland and Romania and Colombia.

  “You are going to get somebody really good to play against. The European countries are generally of the higher quality, and the South American countries. I would still say avoid everyone at the top for as long as you can! You can lose against those guys any time, with no shame and playing a really good match, so why not play against people that you know you can beat seven out of 10 times.”

  World Cup draw: When USMNT will discover group stage opponents

  The USMNT will discover their fate – and whether that includes a meeting with eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi, who has helped to guide Inter Miami to the 2025 MLS Cup final – when the group stage draw is held at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC on December 5.

MLB's slate of games is a loaded one when all 30 teams are in action. If you're looking for a few bets to place, you've come to the right spot. I have three bets locked in for Saturday, including a bet for the AL East duel between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.

Blue Jays vs. Twins Prediction

How could you not bet on the Blue Jays as underdogs again today? Their offense has been on fire of late, batting .269 while ranking fourth in OPS at .795 over the past 30 days. The Twins enter this game ranking just 13th in OPS in that same time frame at .713.

The Blue Jays certainly have some issues and questions that need to be answered when it comes to their rotation, but today isn't one of those days as Kevin Gausman (3.82) is set to get the start against Chris Paddack (3.58).

I'll back Toronto as an underdog once again this afternoon.

Astros vs. Guardians Prediction

The Astros' offense is trending in the right direction of late. They have a batting average of .268 over the past 30 days, along with an OPS of .750, the seventh-best mark in that time frame. The Guardians are trending in the opposite direction, ranking 26th in OPS over the past month.

The Astros also have a significant edge in the starting pitchers' matchup. The AL Cy Young candidate, Hunter Brown (1.83 ERA), gets the start for Houston against Gavin Williams (3.79 ERA) of the Guardians. Williams' 4.38 FIP indicates some regression could be in store for him in the near future.

I'll back the Astros to get the job done in Cleveland.

Red Sox vs. Yankees Prediction

With today's pitching matchup of Garrett Crochet (1.98 ERA) against Ryan Yarbrough (2.83 ERA), you may think that we're in for a low-scoring affair, but consider the fact that both pitchers are lefties. Both teams have been significantly better against left-handed pitchers this season.

The Red Sox's OPS improves from .744 against righties to .776 against lefties, while the Yankees' OPS improves from .797 to .847, which is the best mark amongst all Major League teams against left-handed pitchers.

The Yankees' bullpen has also been a concern for them of late. Over the past 30 days, they have a bullpen ERA of 4.25, which ranks 21st in Majors in that time frame so don't be surprised if we see some late-inning runs in this one.

I'll sit back and root for runs in this AL East rivalry game.

Sometimes it's not just baseball fans who are left to ponder the enigma that is Shohei Ohtani's greatness.

Sometimes, it's opposing players too. On Tuesday, it was Cleveland Guardians pitcher Tanner Bibee who was left perplexed after an Ohtani feat of strength.

Facing the Dodgers slugger in the top of the fourth inning, Bibee hung a cutter over the outer half of the plate—an offering that Ohtani belted towards the opposite field fence.

Off the bat, it appeared to be a towering fly ball that would ultimately stay in the park. But, as balls off of Ohtani's bat tend to do, it just kept carrying, and sailed over the fence at Progressive Field.

As Ohtani rounded the bases, a perplexed Bibee was left to wonder how the ball managed to leave the park.

Bibee even resorted to cursing, as he could even be seen mouthing the words "What the f—?" during Ohtani's journey around the bases.

It's hard not to react like Bibee did while watching Ohtani these days. On the heels of MLB's first-ever 50-homer, 50-stolen base season in 2024, the Dodgers star has now homered in three straight games and became baseball's first player to 20 home runs in '25 with Tuesday's dinger.

Eddie Howe will manage only his second ever Tyne-Wear Derby on Sunday, as one of football’s most passionate rivalries has its latest instalment this weekend.

His only taste of this fierce clash to date was Newcastle United’s 3-0 triumph over Sunderland in the FA Cup in early 2024, with the Black Cats’ struggles in the Championship clear for all to see, as the Magpies ran out as routine winners.

Now, however, Regis Le Bris’ men sit above their arch rivals in the early Premier League table, as Howe prays his inconsistent side can get the better of the Black Cats on their own patch.

Newcastle’s clumsy performance on the road in the Champions League on Wednesday night won’t fill Howe with loads of confidence, either, with some changes in the offing presumably, off the back of the 2-2 draw away at Bayer Leverkusen.

Changes Howe could make ahead of Sunderland

Goalscoring hero Anthony Gordon would sum up the Toon’s frustrations aptly at the full-time whistle, as a late Alejandro Grimaldo equaliser rid Howe’s men of all three points in Europe’s standout competition.

Gordon won’t be fearful of his starting spot against Sunderland, having made it three games on the trot with a goal now against Leverkusen, but Joelinton will surely be axed for the crunch clash on Wearside, with the Brazilian limping off injured after winning just two duels all match.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Glasgow Rangers are one of the clubs eyeing up a deal to sign exciting Tromso central midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl in the upcoming January transfer window.

The report claims that the Light Blues have sent scouts to watch the 20-year-old talent in action in recent weeks, as Rohl lines up a move to sign the midfield whiz.

It adds, though, that Premier League side Sunderland are also interested in Hjerto-Dahl, which means that there could be some stiff competition for his signature in January.

GIVEMESPORT also reports that the Norwegian youngster is not expected to cost a fortune, although no exact price tag has been mentioned.

Why Rangers should sign Hjerto-Dahl

Rangers should push to beat Sunderland to a deal for the 20-year-old central midfielder because he could be a Nicolas Raskin repeat for the Scottish Premiership giants.

The Gers signed the Belgian star from Standard Liege in January 2023 for a fairly modest fee of £1.7m, in a move that could be replicated by Hjerto-Dahl, who could sign in January for another modest fee, given that he is not expected to cost a fortune.

On top of the Tromso midfielder potentially joining in a similar transfer deal, the Norwegian gem could also offer similar qualities to Raskin in the middle of the park with his performances.

Hjerto-Dahl, who was described as a “unicorn” by Belgian scout Elijah Michiels, is another central midfielder who can make an impact at both ends of the pitch as a natural number eight.

The Rangers and Sunderland transfer target has been a regular for Tromso in the Eliteserien in the 2025 campaign, starting 28 of his 30 appearances, and has shown some promising signs with his displays.

As you can see in the table above, he has some fairly similar statistics in comparison to Raskin’s full season in the Premiership last term, with his work in and out of possession, which is why he is such an exciting prospect.

Given that Hjerto-Dahl is four years younger than the Belgium international, his statistics in comparison to the Rangers star’s are fairly impressive, as they show that he can impact games as a scorer and a creator of goals, without neglecting the defensive side of the game.

The Norway U21 international could arrive in January and use the first five months to adjust to Scottish football and life in Glasgow, as Raskin did in the second half of the 2022/23 campaign, before being ready to shine in the 2026/27 campaign.

Whilst supporters may not want to hear about long-term signings and preparing for next season, the reality of the situation is that the Gers are already nine points off first place in the league, have not won a game in the Europa League, and are already out of the League Cup.
