Watch out Yoro & Heaven: Man Utd now targeting “monster” £35m signing

Life under Ruben Amorim at Manchester United has been considerably frustrating for the majority of his tenure.

The Red Devils have never managed to get a consistent run of form together with Amorim as the manager, and even now have won just three games since the start of November.

It has also been tough for younger players to get into the side, with Kobbie Mainoo a prime example of that. However, Amoirm has placed a lot of trust in teen defenders Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, with both players showing across the last year why they are so highly rated.

United are potentially looking to repeat that masterstroke by signing yet another young defender with a huge future ahead of him.

Man Utd targeting new defender for Amorim

There are reportedly a few names United are considering this January, in all areas of the pitch. One of the players who keeps getting mentioned is Atletico Madrid and England midfielder Conor Gallagher, with the Red Devils keen to add to the depth in the centre of the park.

Aside from that, new reports have emerged courtesy of Sky Sports, that signing a centre-back is ‘on the agenda’ at Old Trafford. They reveal that United are ‘one of the clubs monitoring’ Stade Rennes youngster Jeremy Jacquet.

This is by no means going to be a straightforward deal for INEOS to get over the line.

Jacquet is one of the most sought-after talents in Europe, with Sky reporting that ‘several clubs are keen’ and a deal this month could happen if things accelerate.

As for a price, £35m is the ballpark figure United may have to pay.

What Jacquet could add to Amorim’s squad

There is no doubt that Jacquet is a defender with bags of talent. At 20 years of age, he has cemented himself in the Rennes side as a key player and has become a regular at international level for France under-21s.

The defender, who, like Kylian Mbappe, is from Bondy in Paris, has played a crucial role for the Ligue 1 side this season.

He’s featured 15 times in the French top flight, playing 90 minutes in all but one game, the 5-0 loss against Paris Saint-Germain at the start of December.

It has been a fast rise for the young defender, too. This time last season, he was on loan at Clermont in Ligue 2, but was recalled to his boyhood club in January. Jacquet has not really looked back since, and his stock has soared.

Some of the Frenchman’s underlying numbers this season show why he is such a highly rated talent.

He offers progression from the back, averaging 18.7 forward passes per 90 minutes, and wins 4.5 duels on average each game, highlighting his defensive ability.

The signing of Jacquet could certainly be seen as bad news for Yoro and Heaven.

The pair have been important to Amorim at different stages of his tenure, with the Portuguese boss trusting them at crucial times.

Yoro joined last summer and, after an injury in pre-season, went on to become an important player in Amorim’s infamous 3-4-2-1 system.

He has struggled for form in spells during this season, though. As for Heaven, the 19-year-old switched to United last January from Arsenal.

He hasn’t always been a first-choice under the Portuguese manager, but when he’s got a chance in the side, his performances have been excellent, including the most recent outing against Wolves.

Whilst the two United youngsters have shown they can play important roles at Old Trafford, the signing of Jacquet is arguably bad news for the pair.

He is someone of a similar age profile, competing for what might only be one spot when Matthijs De Ligt is fit, with Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw also options.

The 20-year-old is already a “monster” of a defender according to football scout Antonio Mango. It would be an exciting signing for United, and, at the very least, makes for exciting competition.

Pakistan batsmen, Yasir pummel Sri Lanka

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe third ODI ended badly for Sri Lanka, whose cricket team were pummeled by 135 runs, but it was made worse by an outbreak of violence in the stands, which forced a half-hour suspension of play. Rocks were thrown inside the southeastern stand, and when offenders were evicted from the ground, projectiles were thrown from outside the stadium, through the back of the same, open stand. One of these rocks made its way to the field, and match referee Javagal Srinath suspended play until the situation was brought under control by authorities.Sri Lanka’s on-field loss, meanwhile, was set up by a commanding Pakistan batting performance, featuring a lively opening stand, two brisk fifties from Sarfraz Ahmed and Mohammad Hafeez, and a sprint at the death that lifted them to 316 for 4. Sri Lanka began losing wickets in the sixth over, and never appeared to have the measure of the target. They were all out for 181 in the 42nd over, and now trail 1-2 in the five-match series. It was the hosts’ bowling that faltered first, however, as a bare-bones attack produced another insipid showing. Sri Lanka made no changes to an attack that features only two specialist bowlers, and relied on four allrounders to deliver the lion’s share of overs. Of the four wickets they claimed, two were run-outs. Malinga disappeared for 80 from his full quota, leaking 21 runs in his final over. All of Pakistan’s batsmen made meaningful contributions but, batting from No.4, Sarfraz’s 77 from 74 balls ensured their early gains were consolidated, and that his team were well-set for the late dash.Sarfraz was a dynamo at the crease, pilfering singles all around the wicket, and capitalizing on severe of errors of length. Equally adept against pace and spin, he scored at a run-a-ball at least against all bowlers except Angelo Mathews (seven runs off nine balls) and Tillakaratne Dilshan from whom he took six runs from seven deliveries. He might have provided the fireworks himself, had he not been run-out in the approach to the death overs.Ahmed Shehzad prospered in the arc between midwicket and long-on early in Pakistan’s innings, crashing Angelo Mathews through that region off successive balls, while finding singles square either side of the pitch. Azhar Ali was not as aggressive, but was adept at turning the strike over. He became Pakistan’s fastest batsman to 1000 ODI runs when he creamed Lasith Malinga through square leg in the eighth over.Making use of muddled lengths from Sri Lanka’s seamers, the opening pair played and missed at one or two, but mustered a brisk scoring rate. They hit 55 runs from the first 10 overs, then 88 from the first 15. Though the occasional lofted stroke only just cleared the in-field, neither batsman seemed troubled by Sri Lanka’s new-ball bowling. The hosts’ breakthrough came in the 17th over, thanks in equal part to a well-executed short-ball plan and careless batting from Shehzad. Mathews and Malinga packed the leg side, deploying three men in the deep and two close, catching, as Malinga sent his first two balls at the batsmen’s bodies.Expecting another one at his ribs next, Shehzad seemed to play a pre-meditated pull shot, but couldn’t control his stroke when the ball came a little wider of off stump. He was caught by deep midwicket. Azhar also fell needlessly in the 24th over, when miscommunication with Hafeez found him well short of his ground on 49.Hafeez’s knock was full of edges and mis-hits, but he chose his areas well, usually getting the ball to drop some distance from the fielders. Thisara Perera teased his outside edge with full-length deliveries occasionally but, as was the case with Nuwan Pradeep, could not build pressure on the batsmen for any length of time.Hafeez enjoyed milking Sachith Pathirana’s left-arm spin, occasionally trekking down the surface to loft him straight or, more often, sliding back to turn him behind square. He was essentially the link-man between the two fast-paced ends of the innings and will be pleased to continue his good run with the bat, now that he plays as a specialist batsman.Though Sri Lanka managed to control the flow of runs briefly, after Sarfraz’s exit in the 45th over, they were unable to prevent the final charge. Malinga, who had relied exclusively on slower balls for 13 straight deliveries, was brutally treated by Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Rizwan in the final over. The pair hit a six and three fours to finish the innings.Sri Lanka’s opening batsmen were unable to reproduce their explosive success from Pallekele. Tillakaratne Dilshan holed out to mid-off for 14, and Kusal Perera was caught brilliantly by Sarfraz off Anwar Ali soon after. Lahiru Thirimanne attempted to get the chase back on track, but continued to lose partners. Upul Tharanga was stumped off Yasir Shah for 16 and Angelo Mathews ended a laboured 12-ball stay by sending a leading edge down long-off’s throat.Thirimanne himself moved to a much-needed fifty, but when Dinesh Chandimal was dismissed soon after, leaving Sri Lanka at 130 for 5 in the 27th over, Sri Lanka’s challenge was virtually done. On a turning track, Yasir ended up taking two more scalps to finish with 4 for 29, while Anwar Ali and debutant Imad Wasim, who bowls left-arm spin, had two apiece.

Leeds: Phil Hay drops Jesse Marsch update

Leeds United are set to appoint Jesse Marsch as Marcelo Bielsa’s replacement on Monday.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Phil Hay, with The Athletic journalist revealing in a recent post on Twitter that Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta are set to appoint the former New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig manager as the Argentine’s successor in the Elland Road dugout.

The Whites hierarchy have staked their chips on the 48-year-old to steer the club away from a relegation scrap over the club’s last 12 fixtures of the season.

In his tweet, Hay said: “The club are set to appoint Jesse Marsch.”

Fans will be buzzing

While the raw emotion of waving goodbye to a manager who finally ended Leeds’ 16-year spell out of the top flight of English football, as well as installing an incredibly exciting brand of football at Elland Road, will undoubtedly still be very present on Monday morning, the news that the Whites are set to appoint Marsch as Bielsa’s successor should be something that has fans of the club buzzing.

While it is true that the American’s last jaunt in management – a 14 game spell at RB Leipzig – ended with his sacking after just eight months in the role, Marsch has nevertheless proven in his previous posts that he is an incredibly exciting young and innovative coach – as well as one who is not dissimilar in style to Bielsa.

Indeed, should the 48-year-old go on to become the Whites’ next manager, the Elland Road faithful should still expect to see a side with incredibly high energy levels – with Marsch’s Salzburg side typically outrunning their opponents in almost every fixture they played – as well as one who likes to control possession with the ball, while operating a high-press without it.

As such, while the timing of Bielsa’s departure will have left many involved with the club in a state of shock, there is a very good reason Orta has been sounding out Marsch as a potential successor to the Argentine for the best part of two years.

Indeed, if the American can keep Leeds in the division come the end of this season, his slightly less gung-ho brand of football could well reap incredible rewards for the Whites in the long run.

Leeds eye up move for Gustavo Hamer

Leeds United are reportedly eyeing up a move for Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer but face competition for his signature from numerous clubs.

The Lowdown: Hamer impressing for Coventry

The 24-year-old has shone for the Championship side so far this season, proving to be one of their most influential performers in the middle of the park.

Hamer has chipped in with two goals and six assists in 25 league starts in 2021/22 to date, enjoying an average of 1.4 key passes per game, too.

It could be that a summer transfer materialises for the Dutchman, moving up to a higher level as he hits his prime, with a fresh update emerging regarding the situation.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Leeds keen on move

According to Football League World, the Whites are one of the clubs ‘keeping tabs’ on Hamer but they are not alone in showing an interest.

Scottish Premiership giants Celtic and Rangers are also mentioned in the report, as well as Premier League duo Brentford and Norwich City.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-36/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Good for squad depth

Central midfield has been an issue all season long at Leeds, with too much dependency on Kalvin Phillips and his injury absence, therefore, proving to be damaging.

Hamer is someone who could come in and provide new Leeds manager Jesse Marsch with an extra option, being hailed as an ‘unbelievable’ player by teammate Marko Marosi.

At 24, he is still at an age where he is developing as a player, allowing Marsch to potentially get the best years of his career, turning him into a key player over time.

While Hamers’s aforementioned quality on the ball stands out, he is also averaging 1.6 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game in the league this season, showing that he can be a force out of possession, too.

Newcastle target David wants out of Lille

Reported Newcastle target Jonathan David wants to leave Lille this summer, according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.

The lowdown

Calciomercato reported last week that Newcastle, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund were all seriously interested in signing David. The 22-year-old Canadian has split his minutes between the centre-forward and second striker roles so far this season.

Newcastle tried to do business with Lille in January, pursuing a deal for centre-back Sven Botman, but found the reigning French champions to be difficult negotiating partners (via The Athletic).

The latest

Plettenberg took to Twitter on Monday afternoon to reveal that David is eager to move on from Lille in the summer, although there has seemingly been no contact yet with Newcastle regarding the 22-year-old.

The journalist outlined: “The 22 y/o striker wants to leave Lille in summer. No release clause. Sources expect a price tag around €45-55m. His new club should play Champions League next season. No contact with #NUFC so far. Too expensive for the Bundesliga.”

The quoted fee of €45m to €55m  equates to between £37.5m and £45.8m, and although Newcastle may yet initiate contact regarding the player, his preference for Champions League football could preclude them from signing him this year.

The verdict

David looks like a magnificent talent. He has hit 16 goals in 35 appearances so far this season, all the more impressive considering that Ligue 1 champions Lille have tumbled down towards mid-table.

Three of his goals came in the Champions League group stage, helping Lille to set up a round of 16 clash with holders Chelsea.

The Guardian’s Ed Aarons says that the Canadian has ‘his sights on the very top’, while CBS Sports’ James Benge has dubbed him ‘one of the most wanted strikers in the world’.

Can Newcastle persuade him to join the Tyneside revolution? David is still young, so it’s a matter of whether he buys into the club’s long-term project.

At St James’ Park, the goal is to compete for the very biggest honours under the new ownership, so while David would have to suspend his Champions League ambitions for the first few years, it could eventually prove to be a smart move for him if Newcastle can make that big leap forward.

Aston Villa handed boost ahead of WHU clash

Aston Villa made it three wins out of three in midweek thanks to a 3-0 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road, putting them in a good place to take on West Ham United tomorrow for their latest Premier League fixture.

Heading into the game at the London Stadium, it seems as though the Villans have been handed a boost that will surely give them a good chance of securing yet another win.

What’s the news?

Speaking in his recent press conference, Hammers manager David Moyes revealed that winger Jarrod Bowen will not be involved in Sunday’s game, having been absent since sustaining a knock during the Irons’ fixture away to Liverpool last weekend.

Taking into account how the Englishman has racked up 12 goals and 11 assists in 39 appearances for the east London club across all competitions so far this season, it’s safe to say that he has been a crucial figure for his side, who will now be disappointed to not have him available to take on Steven Gerrard’s side.

To further highlight the winger’s impressive attacking form in his latest campaign with the Hammers, only Mohamed Salah (41), Harry Kane (35) and Heung-min Son (28) have made more shots at goal in the league than Bowen (27)

In addition to the eight goals and eight assists he’s delivered in 28 league appearances in this campaign, the 25-year-old has also managed to earn himself an overall performance rating of 7.23/10, making him the highest-rated player in Moyes’ squad according to WhoScored.

Gerrard will be delighted

Given how much of a deadly attacking threat Bowen has been for his team this season, Gerrard will surely be pleased to hear that the winger won’t be lining up against Villa tomorrow, which would definitely give the Midlands club a better chance of potentially keeping their fourth clean sheet in a row if they were to stop the home side from scoring.

However, with Moyes still having the likes of Michail Antonio, Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma at his disposal who have scored a combined total of 18 league goals between them in this campaign, the Villans will have to stay on their toes at the back if they want to stop the Hammers from scoring.

Manchester United: Thomas Tuchel enquiry made

Manchester United have made an enquiry for Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, according to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The Lowdown: Ten Hag preferred candidate

It looks likely to be a summer of change at Old Trafford, with interim manager Ralf Rangnick expected to move into a consultancy role.

One of his first big tasks looks set to help the club in their search for a new long-term manager, with reliable reporter Samuel Luckhurst believing Ajax boss Erik ten Hag is the club’s preferred managerial candidate at this moment in time.

However, just hours later, an update emerged on Tuchel, with the Red Devils seemingly keen on luring the German from Stamford Bridge.

The Latest: Plettenberg’s post

Sky Germany reporter Plettenberg took to Twitter on Thursday lunchtime to provide an update on Tuchel.

He admitted that United have made an enquiry for the Blues boss, however, Tuchel isn’t thinking of an Old Trafford move as of now.

“Update Tuchel: Yes, MUFC is interested due to the uncertain future of Chelsea. They have inquired about him. But: Tuchel loves the club, he wants to stay at CFC, his family is happy in London. He doesn’t think about a move to Manchester United actually.”

The Verdict: One to watch?

Jamie Carragher had recently suggested that United should go after Tuchel due to the situation Chelsea find themselves in following recent sanctions to Roman Abramovich.

It seems as if they are thinking of doing just that, and if things don’t improve in London, then perhaps Tuchel could lean towards the idea of moving north in the summer.

Either way, it’s good to see that United are thinking on the go and don’t have all their eggs in Ten Hag’s basket, so a move for Tuchel could well be one to keep a close eye on over the coming months.

Wolves team news on Neves and Jimenez

Newcastle United journalist Dominic Scurr has given his reaction to the news that Wolves will now be without both Ruben Neves and Raul Jimenez in their April meeting.

The Lowdown: Ruled out

The Midlands club have revealed that Neves has now been ruled out until May after suffering a medial collateral ligament injury to his knee in the 3-2 loss at home to Leeds United in the Premier League on Friday evening.

Raul Jimenez picked up a red card in that match too, his second of the season, which means that he now faces a two-game ban.

With the North East club set to host Bruno Lage’s team at St. James’ Park on April 8th, it means that the Portuguese manager will now be unable to call on both players for the clash.

The Latest: Scurr reacts

Taking to Twitter, The Shields Gazette journalist Scurr has given his reaction to the update on Neves, claiming that while it is a ‘blow’ for the Molineux faithful to lose him and Jimenez, it is ‘good news’ for Eddie Howe’s side:

“Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves out for the trip to NUFC next month.

“A blow for Wolves losing two big players, but good news for Eddie Howe’s side.”

The Verdict: Relief

The fact that Neves will not be able to play on top of Jimenez will no doubt come as a huge relief on Tyneside.

The latter grabbed both assists in the reverse fixture earlier this campaign, when the Wanderers won 2-1, while Neves won a team-high two interceptions, and also recorded more touches (86) than anyone else in the game (SofaScore).

Neves has been one of WWFC’s best players in general this term, and combined with Jimenez’s threat in front of goal, the Magpies will not mind seeing the back of them next month.

Newcastle: Joelinton looked lost

Newcastle United found themselves on the wrong end of a drubbing as they lost 5-1 to Tottenham away from home on Sunday.

It was a third straight Premier League defeat for Eddie Howe’s side as they were swept away by Antonio Conte’s electric Spurs team.

Fabian Schar’s well-hit free-kick had given the Magpies a shock lead in the match, but goals from Ben Davies, Matt Doherty, Emerson Royal, Steven Bergwijn and Heung-Min Son ensured that they came away with all three points.

A number of players struggled for Howe as Tottenham dismantled their defence time and time again throughout the 90 minutes. One player who let the head coach down badly was central midfielder Joelinton.

The 25-year-old, who has come on leaps and bounds under the ex-Cherries boss, was a liability in the middle of the park and failed to showcase his best qualities.

Dion Dublin previously claimed that the Brazilian “looked lost” earlier in his Magpies career and those struggles reared their ugly head again as he put in a worrying performance for the club against Spurs.

He lasted 59 minutes on the pitch before Howe decided to take him out of the game, as he was unable to make a positive impact at either end of the pitch.

Off the ball, he was a lightweight for the Toon. As per SofaScore, he lost 75% (6/8) of his individual battles and only made one tackle. He did not make a single clearance, interception, or block, whilst committing two fouls.

This shows that he could not keep up with the physicality of the game as the Spurs players were able to dominate him on that side of the game. The £80k-per-week dud needed to be stronger in his duels to get Newcastle on the front foot and was unable to do so.

He also did little in possession. As per SofaScore, he lost the ball once every 2.6 touches (9/23) and failed to complete a single dribble, shot or key pass. Joelinton was unsuccessful with all of his attempted crosses and long passes and these statistics show that he did not stamp his authority on the match.

Overall, he let the team down at both ends of the pitch with a disappointing display as he looked lost offensively and defensively. Hopefully, this was a one-off display and he will be back to his marauding best when the Magpies host Wolves next time out on Friday night in the Premier League.

Rashford gaining interest from Arsenal

Manchester United are in a period of transition with a number of big changes coming up at the end of this season as the club attempt to rebuild the squad and bring in a manager that can lead the Red Devils back to victory.

Now a fresh transfer update has emerged that could be another big change for the club.

What’s the word?

According to the Mirror Online, Arsenal will offer a contract to the Old Trafford outcast Marcus Rashford this summer.

The Gunners are reportedly on the hunt for a new front-line striker and believe that the Mancunian attacker could be the answer to their problems after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang departed for La Liga this season.

With Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah also both out of contract, Mikel Arteta is said to be on a mission to rebuild his attacking line when the season draws to a close in a few months time.

Man United must axe Rashford

It is clear that Rashford’s long term loyalty and love affair with his boyhood club has finally come to an end as reports have been growing on his desire to leave Old Trafford this summer following inconsistent game time under Ralf Rangnick’s reign.

With that being said, it could be the perfect opportunity this summer for the player and the club to mutually part ways in the best interests of the squad and in the best interests of Rashford himself, who will be looking for a more consistent role somewhere else whilst he still has time to develop and thrive.

United could also make a hefty return on their youth player turned first-team star, as the player has hit the highest market value of his career, with Transfermarkt currently reporting the attacker’s value at £76.5m and making this kind of profit on him could certainly boost the transfer funds offered to the new manager coming in to add new key players for the season ahead.

The £180k-per-week dud who was branded “embarrassing” by Rio Ferdinand, has struggled to make an impact in Rangnick’s side this season, and has found himself either left out of the starting line-up or failing to impose a real threat on his opponents.

He has only scored five goals and registered two assists so far, equalling a goal involvement every 194 minutes compared to last season where he was contributing every 115 minutes.

Ultimately whether Rashford is in decline or just in desperate need of a change of scenery, the best outcome for all parties could be for the player to depart, and if interest continues to grow there will surely be no doubt that the powers at Old Trafford will be willing to listen to lucrative offers.
