'He can play for Real Madrid, Man City or Liverpool' – Juventus coach Igor Tudor hails 'top-notch' full-back who can also play in midfield

Juventus boss Igor Tudor has hailed Andrea Cambiaso as a ‘top-notch’ full-back capable of playing for elite clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester City, or Liverpool. The versatile Italy international, who can also slot into midfield, is seen as a key asset as Juve return home to face Atalanta this weekend. Tudor stressed consistency will be key for the 25-year-old to reach his full potential.

  • Tudor hails Cambiaso’s versatility

Juve boss Tudor has been effusive in his praise for Italian starlet Cambiaso, highlighting the defender’s adaptability and technical skill. “Can he be deployed in other roles? Yes, he can also play as a midfielder. As a full-back or a wing-back, he sees things like a midfielder, occasionally dropping into the middle. I give him that freedom on the pitch. He’s a top-notch player, he needs to be more consistent in his performances, but that’s up to him. He can play for Real Madrid, Manchester City, or Liverpool,” Tudor explained a press conference.

Cambiaso’s potential and past transfer links

Cambiaso’s qualities have drawn attention from Europe’s top clubs, with City and Liverpool reportedly monitoring him during the January transfer window. While the move did not materialise, Tudor believes the full-back possesses the technical and physical attributes to succeed at the very highest level. Juventus’ history of nurturing and exporting talent to elite sides adds weight to Tudor’s claim, and Cambiaso’s ability to contribute both defensively and in midfield positions underlines his versatility. “He’s potentially a player for the best club in the world, but he has to decide for himself,” Tudor said.

  • Squad context and Conceicao's fitness update

Juve’s preparations for the Atalanta clash are tempered by minor fitness concerns, with Conceicao, who returned to action in the 1-1 draw at Verona, is not fully fit and his availability remains uncertain, also reportedly missed training recently. Juve, under Tudor, are building momentum with 10 points from the opening four Serie A matches, remaining undefeated across all competitions. The squad’s mix of experience and youthful talent, combined with Tudor’s tactical flexibility, provides Juventus with multiple options to manage both the attacking and defensive phases effectively.

Juventus return to action vs Atalanta

After a draw at Verona that left a trail of controversy, Juve return to Allianz Stadium to face Atalanta in Serie A’s fifth round. The Bianconeri remain undefeated this season and are leading the table, having posted convincing wins against Lecce and Torino. However, Atalanta have shown immense resilience on the road, with just one defeat in their last 18 away Serie A games.

The upcoming fixture represents both a test and an opportunity for Juventus. Securing a home win will reinforce Juve’s dominance at Allianz Stadium while keeping pace in Serie A’s early table standings. For Cambiaso, consistent performances against strong opposition will be vital in showcasing why Tudor rates him among the best full-backs in Europe.

"Fantastic" Liverpool ace who's forcing move is "one step away" from exit

A “fantastic” Liverpool player appears to be edging closer to sealing a move away from the club before the summer transfer window slams shut.

Isak and Guehi getting closer to Liverpool

The Reds’ summer got off to such an exciting start, not least because Florian Wirtz joined in a record-breaking move from Bayer Leverkusen, but there has been a feeling that the Premier League champions need to sign both Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi to make it a truly memorable window.

While there is work to do in that respect, it increasingly looks as though the Premier League pair could both be heading to Anfield, with positive progress made.

Firstly, Newcastle United are signing VfB Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade, as well as retaining an interest in Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, meaning a second offer for Isak from Liverpool is more likely to be accepted.

Meanwhile, the Reds have reportedly submitted a £40m offer for Guehi, following his appearance for Crystal Palace in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday evening, with the England international considered an ideal centre-back addition.

"Fantastic" Liverpool ace close to leaving

Now, according to various reports, Kostas Tsimikas is now close to sealing a loan move from Liverpool to Roma, with the transfer seemingly in its final stages and “one step away”. This comes after Gazzetta dello Sport [via Sport Witness] reported that the Greek was pushing for a move away from Anfield this summer.

This feels like a good outcome for all parties for now, prior to a likely permanent exit next summer, with Tsimikas unlikely to play much for Liverpool this season.

Milos Kerkez’s arrival has pushed him further down the left-back pecking order, so barring injury woes in that position, opportunities will be limited.

Tsimikas has been a good servant for Liverpool, making himself a hero by scoring the winning penalty in the 2022 FA Cup final shootout victory over Chelsea, and being called “fantastic” by journalist Ian Doyle, but he has never quite felt like a genuinely excellent option.

That’s not to say he hasn’t performed well at times, keeping the pressure on Andy Robertson, but his time at Anfield should be reaching its natural conclusion.

West Ham readying bid to sign "crazy" ace who dreams of Premier League move

After announcing the arrival of Mateus Fernandes, West Ham United are reportedly readying an offer to sign an attacking reinforcement who Graham Potter loves.

Fernandes "excited" by West Ham move

Following a disastrous start to the season, West Ham have welcomed a much-needed reinforcement in Fernandes. The midfielder has officially arrived from Southampton in a deal worth around £42m with add-ons and will now be looking to make his mark on Potter’s side as soon as possible.

Speaking for the first time since putting pen to paper, Fernandes told West Ham’s official website: “I’m very happy to be here. I’m very excited to play for West Ham. I think it’s a big step for me.

“It’s a big Club, a massive Club. The project, the stadium, the city, everything. I want to try to play football, enjoy football, not just run and try to score, but try to play good football. I think the most important thing is to try to give everything every day.”

After welcoming the midfield star, West Ham are not done there. Reports are also indicating that they’re on course to sign Soungoutou Magassa from AS Monaco to continue their late spending.

It should come as no surprise that those at the London Stadium are attempting a late spending spree. The Hammers have endured a nightmare start to the season, losing three from three, and are suddenly among the favourites to face the drop.

Potter will hope that recent additions finally turn his tenure around and he avoids yet another London sacking. What’s more, any pressure to turn things around will only increase if West Ham move for a winger that he reportedly loves before the transfer window slams shut.

West Ham readying Wimmer offer

As reported by BILD and relayed by Sport Witness, West Ham are now readying an offer to sign Patrick Wimmer from Wolfsburg this week. Potter is reportedly a fan of the winger and he has been dreaming of a Premier League move for some time.

Whether Wimmer is the answer to their problems or a repeat of recent transfer flops such as Crysencio Summerville and Niclas Fullkrug is the big question. One look at the numbers should spark concern for West Ham.

Former Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega reiterated that Wimmer still has work to do, but also had plenty of praise for his former Arminia Bielefeld teammate, telling reporters: “There’s something crazy and care-free about him; he’s got a youthful folly. If he sticks at it and works on getting some of the basics right, then he’ll be even more valuable.”

There’s no doubt that signing the 24-year-old would be a risk and at this stage, West Ham simply can’t afford to get things wrong in the transfer market.

Should Buttler promote himself from No. 6 in England's batting order?

Jos Buttler should promote himself in the batting order with his England captaincy on the line in Wednesday’s Champions Trophy game against Afghanistan, according to former England opener Nick Knight.Buttler walked out to bat in the 35th over in England’s five-wicket defeat to Australia on Saturday, hitting 23 off 21 balls from No. 6 before holing out to deep midwicket. He explained before the start of the Champions Trophy that he saw that position – where he has batted more than any other in ODIs – as his “super-strength”.But Knight, who played exactly 100 ODIs between 1996 and 2003, believes that England are not getting the best out of Buttler in his current role and must give him the chance to have a bigger impact on games. “I have really strong feelings about this,” Knight said on ESPNcricinfo’s Match Day show.Related

“Jos Buttler, for me, is not taking enough part in the construction of an innings,” Knight said. “He’s one of the best in the world, simple as that, let alone one of the best in the team. He’s the best player. With your best player, you want them to play as much of a role within the outcome of the innings as possible.”I thought England made an error in the last game when they had that partnership broken between [Joe] Root and [Ben] Duckett and they brought in Harry Brook. Harry Brook is a very fine player but is a little bit out of touch at the moment. I personally would have just sent Buttler in. As soon as it ticks over to 20-25 overs, Buttler’s in next… Be flexible with your batting line-up, get your best player in.”Buttler struggled in the 2023 50-over World Cup and averages 26.16 in ODIs in Asia, but Knight played down the relevance of those stats. “I’ve seen him destroy attacks in the IPL – very good, high-quality attacks,” he said. “He can play in Asia, don’t worry about that. He’s scored hundreds galore in one-day cricket in those conditions. Really, it’s just about finding the best balance for him.”When you look at the best of Jos Buttler, he gives himself five, ten, 15 balls to get in… He’s one of England’s finest players of all time. He’s one of the world’s greatest in this format. Of course, he will have areas where he might get a little exposed from time to time but get him out there. Let’s give him that chance to really shine.”Buttler and Brendon McCullum share a joke in Lahore•Matthew Lewis-ICC/ICC via Getty Images

Nasser Hussain, Knight’s England captain at the 2003 World Cup, also believes that Buttler was wasted down the order against Australia, with England posting 351 for 8 having been 200 for 2 after 30 overs. “The damage that Buttler could do [higher up] compared to what he can do at the end, I think I would have him up the order,” Hussain said on the Sky Sports cricket podcast.”If he bats at No. 3 or 4… he could get out for ten or 20, but if he gets in, Jos Buttler at his best – one of England’s, if not England’s, greatest batter – on that surface, could go on and get 150 because he’s so talented. If, on a pitch like that, England’s best white-ball player of all time is sitting and watching 40 overs of cricket from the pavilion, as an opposition captain, I’m thinking, ‘That’s good, I’m enjoying that’.”And also, this is a defining tournament now for Buttler. If they don’t get through the qualification here, the group stages, he could well lose his job. For that reason, if I’m Jos Buttler, I’m thinking, ‘My job is hanging on the line here, I have to have a massive impact on this game and on this tournament right now’. As opposed to, at the end of the tournament, wishing, ‘Why didn’t I promote myself and give it a go?’ They see it differently. They see him as the finisher.”Buttler is expected to continue batting at No. 6 when England face Afghanistan in Lahore on Wednesday. He conceded on Tuesday that he was “absolutely” under pressure. “Any time as an England captain you want to perform, you want to perform well, and you want to lead your team to winning games of cricket. We haven’t been doing that enough in the recent past.”

Chelsea submit £43m bid for defender who's "as good as Van Dijk and Saliba"

Chelsea have now received a response after submitting a £43m offer for a defender who’s “as good as Van Dijk and Saliba”, according to a report.

Blues looking to strengthen at centre-back

Although his side were unable to pick up all three points against Crystal Palace on Sunday, Enzo Maresca will be pleased that his side managed to keep a clean sheet, with the centre-back partnership of Josh Acheampong and Trevoh Chalobah holding firm.

The duo made a combined 17 defensive actions to keep Palace at bay, with both players also showcasing their ability in possession of the ball, averaging pass-completion rates of over 90%.

However, there may be some doubts over whether the Blues’ defence is good enough to mount a serious Premier League title challenge, with Acheampong still only 19-years-old, while Chalobah remains relatively inexperienced at the top level.

Their own Eze: £61m superstar now "only wants" to sign for Chelsea

With Levi Colwill also sidelined for the foreseeable future due to an ACL injury, it would make sense to get another centre-back through the door, and an offer has been made for a Serie A defender.

That is according to a report from Gazzetta, which states Chelsea have tabled a €50m (£43m) bid for Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni, which was ‘politely declined’ by the Italian.

The Blues are not the only Premier League club to have expressed an interest in Bastoni, with Newcastle United also coming forward over a potential deal, but the defender remains focused on Inter’s upcoming campaign.

That said, another approach from one of the interested English clubs isn’t ruled out, suggesting that a deal could still be possible later in the window.

Bastoni could be on Van Dijk and Saliba's level

The 26-year-old is held in very high regard by presenter and analyst Nieve Petruzziello, who claimed he was “as good as Van Dijk and Saliba” last season.

The Italy international is also extremely comfortable in possession of the ball, as showcased by his passing and dribbling ability, which has regularly been on display over the course of the past year.

The Inter star’s passing ability, coupled with the fact he is used to playing in a back three, could make him an ideal addition to Maresca’s squad, given that the Chelsea boss often implements a three-at-the-back system.

As such, it is disappointing the Blues’ opening offer was rejected, but a move later in the window has not been ruled out, and it could be worth submitting an improved bid for the centre-back.

Kerala steal two-run lead on dramatic final morning to reach maiden Ranji final

Aditya Sarwate took three wickets in the morning session to give Kerala the decisive first-innings advantage

Shashank Kishore21-Feb-2025 • Updated on 20-Mar-2025

Sixty-eight years after playing their first match, Kerala secured an entry into their maiden Ranji Trophy final on a dramatic fifth morning against Gujarat in Ahmedabad.Needing to pick up three wickets while having just 28 to defend at the start of the day’s play, left-arm spinner Aditya Sarwate rose to the occasion by picking up all the remaining wickets to fall as Kerala bowled Gujarat out for 455 to clinch a two-run first-innings lead. This after they made it to the semi-final on the back of a one-run first-innings lead against Jammu and Kashmir.Kerala will play Vidarbha in the final, which will be played in Nagpur from February 26.Each of the three wickets had an element of drama attached to it. The prelude to the first wicket of the day, of the well-set Jaymeet Patel, was a dropped catch by Sachin Baby, the Kerala captain, at extra cover with Gujarat needing 23 to draw level. But two balls later, Baby sprung back to life as Sarwate’s slider from around the stumps accounted for Jaymeet who played for the turn when there was none.Having played down the wrong line as he lunged forward, Jaymeet dragged his foot outside the crease as the ball passed his outside edge as Mohammed Azharuddeen effected an excellent stumping. An agonising three-minute wait and multiple replays later, Kerala celebrated as the umpire deemed Jaymeet’s foot to be on the line when the bail was knocked off its groove.

Arzan Nagwaswalla, the No. 10 batter, showed good technique and used the first opportunity to pick up a boundary, when he rocked back and punched part-time spinner Akshay Chandran to the cover boundary to bring Gujarat within 14 runs of levelling the score. That would be Chandran’s only over of the day – he was only brought on to allow a change of ends for Jalaj Saxena, with Kerala opting to go all-out with their spinners. With Gujarat trailing by 11 came another big moment when Siddharth Desai, who had stonewalled the bowling for 163 deliveries up until then, opted for the DRS after he had been given out caught at silly point. When Ultra-Edge showed no spike as the ball passed bat, the Kerala camp threw their heads back in agony, but they were jumping in joy a few second later when ball tracking showed the ball that pitched in line would’ve gone on to hit leg stump. Desai couldn’t believe his luck as luck smiled Kerala’s way even though the appeal wasn’t made for the lbw.Nagwaswalla and Priyajitsinh Jadeja, the No 11, then brought the equation down to eight runs needed when Kerala had another half-chance. Nagwaswalla whipped one into the leg side with the ball lodging between Salman Nizar’s legs before slipping out as he attempted a reflex action catch. Then, Saxena was agonising close to his fifth wicket when he deceived Nagwaswalla in flight as he lunged at one that spun back in from the rough to take the inside edge and brush past leg-stump towards the fine leg fielder. It meant Gujarat needed just two to level the scores, which would’ve been enough to see them through in case of a draw because of having more points in the group stages. The big moment arrived for Kerala when Sarwate tossed one up. Nagwaswalla attempted a hoick as the ball flew off a thick inside edge to short leg, where it hit Nizar flush on the helmet before lobbing up to Baby who took the deflection at slip. Initially pumped by adrenaline, Nizar celebrated wildly with the rest of the Kerala team as they celebrated the prospect of making their first-ever Ranji final as a crest-fallen Nagwaswalla trudged back slowly up the long flight of stairs into the dressing room. After the ecstasy of their achievement sunk in and players made their way off the field, Nizar was duly stretchered off for a concussion check, even as Kerala’s batters quickly regrouped to play out the remainder of the match on the final day.Saxena wheeled away for 71 overs in the second innings for his four wickets, three of which turned the game around on its head on the fourth morning. Sarwate, who had figures of 1 for 101 coming into the day, ended with 4 for 111 as the prospect of playing against his home state, Vidarbha, at his home ground in Nagpur loomed.Gujarat managed to take four wickets in the 46 overs they bowled in Kerala’s second innings, but Saxena batted Kerala to safety.

Man Utd preparing £50m+ bid for "unbelievable" star, he's keen on the move

Manchester United are now preparing a £50m+ bid for an “unbelievable” star, who is keen on a move to Old Trafford, and they are frontrunners in the race for his signature.

Man Utd's midfield called into question by Scholes

After a very disappointing start to the new campaign, Man United legend Paul Scholes has questioned the decision to deploy Bruno Fernandes in an unfavoured position, saying: “There’s too much indecision in the midfield area, you think of Casemiro. He’s been a brilliant player, but we know his deficiencies, don’t we?”

“Fernandes [and Casemiro], they’re the two he’s [Amorim] going with, and Fernandes for me, he’s someone who fills in as a midfielder, he might get away with it for one, two or three games. He’s not got the discipline to be a central midfield player.”

Given that Fernandes has been one of United’s best players for quite some time, chipping in with 19 Premier League goal contributions last season, there is a feeling the 30-year-old is being shoehorned into the starting XI.

However, despite scraping a 3-2 victory against Burnley, Ruben Amorim’s play-style clearly isn’t working, meaning the 40-year-old may need to bring in a central midfielder who is better suited to his system in January.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Man United are now preparing a £50m+ bid for Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, who is eager to embark on a new challenge at an elite club, meaning he is keen on a move to Old Trafford.

United have identified Wharton as a key target for the January transfer window, having also expressed interest in the summer, but Oliver Glasner blocked an exit, given that Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi were also attracting widespread interest.

Man Utd agree personal terms with 109 career-goal striker wanted by Wilcox

The Red Devils are making progress in their pursuit of a new centre-forward.

ByDominic Lund Sep 3, 2025

The 21-year-old has been identified as a long-term replacement for Casemiro, but there could be competition for his signature, with Chelsea said to be frontrunners alongside the Red Devils.

"Unbelievable" Wharton could be ideal signing for Amorim

Man United need to bring in a midfielder suited to Amorim’s style of play, and the Palace star fits the bill in that regard, having flourished under Glasner’s 3-4-2-1 system.

Guehi has been left particularly impressed by his teammate’s ability in possession, claiming the Englishman is “unbelievable” on the ball last season, but that is far from his only strength, as detailed by former WhoScored contributor Ben McAleer.

The fact Wharton is strong at winning back possession means he could be a solid long-term heir to Casemiro, but the Brazilian may still have plenty left to give, given the level of some of his performances over the past year.
