NZ quicks set up comprehensive win

‘We ended the game the way we wanted’ – Elliott

New Zealand’s persistence with the ball and excellence in the field took fine advantage of Pakistan’s indiscipline with the bat, as the hosts first trussed up the opposition for 210, then sauntered to the total inside 40 overs with seven wickets in hand.Although they were untested as a team in this match, the hosts’ top order got valuable time in the middle – Ross Taylor and Grant Elliott collecting unbeaten fifties, after Martin Guptill struck 39. Pakistan had its star turns too, as Misbah-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi struck wildly incongruous fifties, and Mohammad Irfan caused grief with his bounce, but those performances went unsupported by others.Kyle Mills snaffled 2 for 29 from his ten overs, sneaking an indipper through Mohammad Hafeez’s defences and nailing Younis Khan as well, though he was largely bowling in the 125kph-range. His accuracy at the top of the innings also helped ensure Pakistan were muzzled at the outset. They scored eight runs for one wicket in the first six overs of the innings, and did not advance quickly even after that.Trent Boult and Corey Anderson also took two scalps apiece, while Adam Milne took Afridi’s wicket. The fielding, led by Guptill, who took three catches, ensured that even when the Pakistan batsmen found the middle of their bats, runs were still hard-earned.The early losses set the stage for Misbah and Afridi’s strange double act; the former responsible and grim in his 87-ball 58, the latter haphazard and brilliant in his 29-ball 67.Misbah came in at 29 for 2, lost Younis soon after, and endeavoured to do nothing more ambitious than find sensible runs into the outfield. Only occasionally did he indulge in his leg-side wallop, which brought him two sixes and a four. His team-mates continued to abandon sense at the other end. Umar Akmal walked down the track and allowed an innocuous Elliott yorker underneath his bat, before Sarfraz Ahmed slog-swept Anderson to deep square leg in the batting Powerplay. It was then that Afridi strode to the crease, at 127 for 6, and launched his startling onslaught.Afridi hacked the seamers all around the ground, lifting Anderson over the covers first ball, before whacking Milne over mid-on next over. He was dropped on 14 by Brendon McCullum – New Zealand’s only fielding indiscretion of the day – and punished the hosts by being brutal on anything short, particularly when the batting Powerplay was still in force. He sent Nathan McCullum into the stands in two successive deliveries to reach his fifty from 21 balls.Misbah was dismissed in the 42nd over, attempting to launch Elliott into the deep-midwicket stand. He fell with the score on 198, and only 12 more runs would be mustered. Afridi continued to live dangerously, and was caught on the long-on boundary. Pakistan were all out in the 46th over.McCullum succeeded in getting four boundaries away, but his 12-ball innings came to an end on 17 when he charged and top-edged Bilawal Bhatti. Irfan was slightly wayward to begin with, but eventually began to trouble both Guptill and Tom Latham, who were both relatively secure otherwise. The pair made 44 brisk runs together before Afridi extracted an edge from Latham in the 12th over.Guptill was serene at times, driving effortlessly and pulling with confidence, but his search for a substantial score to match his flowing strokes was cut short in the 19th over. He attempted to pull Irfan along the ground, but underestimated the bounce and ended up sending a catch to deep square leg.Taylor was outdone by Irfan’s bounce several times too, but managed to survive, sometimes edging or mishitting into gaps. With New Zealand well ahead of the run-rate, however, Taylor could afford to take his time, particularly when Elliott arrived and began to score efficiently.Elliott prospered on the leg side, as he struck four fours off short deliveries -sometimes without a great deal of control – but he was otherwise as secure as he had been during the other matches this summer. Taylor reached his fifty off 72 balls, and Elliott got to the milestone two overs later, off 55 deliveries. Their partnership was unbeaten on 112 when Elliott hit the winning runs through point.

BCB president backs Mashrafe captaincy

Mashrafe Mortaza has received a vote of confidence of BCB president Nazmul Hassan to lead Bangladesh in the World Cup

Mohammad Isam27-Nov-2014Mashrafe Mortaza has received a vote of confidence of BCB president Nazmul Hassan to lead Bangladesh in the World Cup. He was appointed captain for the ODI series against Zimbabwe after the captaincy was split across formats for the first time.Bangladesh lead the five-match ODI series 3-0 with Mashrafe performing well with the new ball and Mushfiqur Rahim, who he has replaced as ODI captain, also doing well with the bat. Mushfiqur was removed from ODI captaincy after he led the team to 12 losses in the first 13 ODIs this season. The BCB chief said that he was happy with the ODI captaincy status, and has a contingency plan if Mashrafe’s injury worries catch up.”The decision [to choose the captain] is not yet taken but I think we are doing well with two captains,” Hassan said. “I don’t see any reason to change things around. Possibly, he [Mashrafe] will remain the captain. Since he has a long history with injuries, Shakib has been kept as his deputy. Mushfiq is our middle-order mainstay and we don’t want to burden him with batting, wicketkeeping and captaincy.”Mashrafe was later seen entering the BCB president’s corporate office after the press conference, though he said it was for a personal reason. The BCB president however said that they won’t be sending the team to Dubai for a tournament which also involves Zimbabwe and several Associates despite the board agreeing principally last week.”We had considered going to Dubai but we took everyone’s opinion and decided not to go. We have informed them [the ICC] in a letter that we won’t be taking part in the tournament. It will be risky to play in such a competition so close to the World Cup.”After the current Zimbabwe series, the players will be busy in the Dhaka Premier League. So we don’t want them to be too busy before the World Cup,” Hassan said. “I have reports that Tamim Iqbal needs to rest, so we have to keep their fitness in mind as well. We have organised practice matches in Australia as we will arrive there early.”The decision means that the fifth ODI against Zimbabwe will be Bangladesh’s last international game before the World Cup.

De Bruyn ton steamrolls Liberal Arts

Round-up of Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals matches on Monday, 21st July 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jul-2014Theunis de Bruyn, the Assupol TUKS captain, razed 137 off 60 balls to rout University of Liberal Arts by 114 runs. Arriving after an early wicket, his counterattack included 12 fours and eight sixes.De Bruyn wrest control back when Assupol slipped from 125 for 1 to 148 for 4 with 23 balls remaining. Yet his belligerence powered Assupol to a daunting 205. He took a particular liking to seamer Abdullah Imran, who conceded 63 runs in his four overs.Tanmay Roy was Liberal Arts’ only positive, taking 2 for 26, considering it took the no. 7 batsman, Mashkur Rahman to provide the top score – 20 – in the chase. Their top five wickets were sent back before they reached 50. Since then it simply boiled down to lasting the full quota and they finished at 91 for 7.Sumit Ghadigaonkar lashed 76 off 57 balls to steamroll ICBT Campus by nine wickets. Rizvi Mumbai overhauled a target of 120 with more than three overs to spare courtesy his eight fours and two sixes. The ICBT Campus batsmen managed starts, but continuously fell short of converting them. Captain Udara Hettige (26) provided the team with a good start but it was diluted by a middle-order wobble. They were 96 for 5 from 68 for 1 and the slide put paid to all hopes of acceleration towards the end. Left-arm spinner Aditya Dhumal picked up 2 for 23.Nicholas Walker hurried to 58 off 49 balls and though only his opening partner got to double-figures in the line-up, University of New South Wales hung on for a two-run win over Karachi University.Three fours and three sixes were part of Walker’s knock as he powered an opening stand of 65. He carried a second-wicket stand 40 runs before the innings crumbled. Karachi University’s bowlers combined to hammer seven wickets for 13 runs. The target of 115 looked complicated when both Karachi openers bagged ducks. Zakir Ali (35) and Safiullah Bangash (36) hustled busy knocks to take the game into the final overs. However, they were pried out and the tail was left to scrounge a little too many.Chrishna Graham ripped out the Leeds/ Bradford Marylebone Cricket Club University top order to claim 3 for 19 to help Jamaica Inter-Collegiate Sports Assoc off to a winning start in the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals in Aston Rowant.Only four players got into double-figures, while chasing 97, and none of them got past 14. They lost five wickets moving from 20 to 30 and post no real threat thereafter to be bundled out for 72.Jamaica’s success didn’t look likely after they succumbed for 96 after being inserted. Seamer Zafir Patel took 4 for 13 and was pivotal to Jamaica fumbling from 81 for 5 in the 16th over. However, a 37-run stand between top-scorer Delbert Gayle and Cassius Burton ended up as match-winning.

'I am still better than lots of players' – Afridi

Pakistan allrounder Shahid Afridi remains hopeful of making an ODI comeback in the upcoming West Indies series

Umar Farooq02-Jul-2013Pakistan allrounder Shahid Afridi’s ODI career has a question mark hanging over it after he was dropped twice in the last six months following poor runs, but he remains hopeful of making a comeback for the upcoming West Indies series and is keen on playing both shorter formats. In the 21 ODIs he has played since January 2012, Afridi has picked up 15 wickets at 57.13 and scored 308 runs at 19.25. While he is an automatic selection in the Twenty20 squad, he last made an ODI comeback on the tour to South Africa earlier this year, where he remained wicketless and scored 126 in four innings with a high score of 88. He was subsequently dropped from the Champions Trophy, and has not played competitive cricket since April. Now, though, he is pushing himself hard to be ready for the West Indies series that begins with a practice one-dayer on July 11. He has been training at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore over the past couple of weeks, and he passed the fitness test he was subjected to. The Pakistan selectors will meet in Lahore on Wednesday afternoon to finalise the squad, and Afridi said he still had the desire and skills to make the team. “I am doing my best and working so hard in the nets at the National Cricket Academy over the past two-three weeks. I have working on many areas of the game and I want to play both [shorter] forms of the game.”I think I am still better than lots of players; there should be professional jealousy in me. I know how important my performance is as a senior player for the team. You can’t judge a player based only on Twenty20 performance.”Dropping “match-winners”, Afridi said, was not the way to go. Key players, he said, even when they lose form, should “stay with the team”. “Poor form doesn’t really reflect that a player is at the wrong side of his game,” he said. “Those players who are around with the team for years and are also match-winners should be kept with the team to boost their confidence. Teams are carrying their match-winners like David Warner [despite him being suspended]. You can’t be in form if you stay out of the team.”
