Watson injury concern for Australia

Australia suffered a potentially significant blow to their chances of victory at Chester-le-Street when Shane Watson left the field injured on Sunday. Watson pulled up sore after the third ball of his seventh over of England’s second innings and walked off with pain in his right hip/groin area. Cricket Australia said he would be assessed on Sunday evening “to see how it settles”.In the immediate term, the injury hampers Australia’s hopes in this Test as, due to ICC regulations, Watson will not be able to have a runner when he bats in Australia’s chase. Watson scored 68 in the first innings and apart from the centurion Chris Rogers was the batsman who appeared to best handle the swinging and seaming conditions. In the longer term, it is a concern given Australia’s apparent desire to turn Watson into more of a bowling allrounder. He began the series opening the batting but a lack of runs at the top of the order, combined with his impressive economy and control at the bowling crease, encouraged the Australians to move him down to No. 6 for this game.Ryan Harris said: “It’s obviously not a good sign when anyone gets injured but I don’t know it’s as bad as first thought. When I left the rooms they were talking about him batting but they’ll assess it tonight and see how he pulls up in the morning. You never want anyone limping off, especially someone like Shane Watson who’s a pretty big player in your team.”Watson has bowled 80.3 overs in this Ashes campaign, easily the second most he has sent down in a Test series, after the 115.4 he delivered in India in 2008. Watson’s bowling has been a constant source of injury concerns throughout his career, to the point that he embarked on the tour of India earlier this year as a batsman only, in an attempt to avoid further problems. But his miserable batting form – he has not scored a Test hundred since 2010 – meant that Watson needed to be bowling for Australia to gain enough value from his inclusion in the side and he has played an important bowling role in England.Watson’s most recent bowling injury occurred during the Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka at the MCG last year, when he hurt his left calf, the same muscle that caused him problems earlier in the season and ruled him out of the first two Tests against South Africa. He had also missed the whole of the previous Australian Test summer due to calf and hamstring injuries. His injury in Melbourne came after he sent down 47.4 overs in the previous match at Hobart, the most he had ever delivered in a Test, and his heavy workload and subsequent injury on this Ashes tour will again force Australia to consider how to use him in future. If Watson is ruled out of the next Test at The Oval, Australia will also need to consider whether to replace him with a bowler and move Brad Haddin up to No. 6, or with a batsman. James Faulkner, Ashton Agar and Mitchell Starc are the extra bowlers in Australia’s squad who could come into contention and each offers an all-round option as well.

Klinger 96 keeps Gloucs top

A fighting 96 at Headingley from Gloucestershire’s Australian captain, Michael Klinger, condemned Yorkshire to yet another defeat in the Yorkshire Bank 40 and maintained his own side’s place at the top of the table.Once again, Yorkshire’s depleted one-day attack was unable to put their opponents under sufficient pressure as they chased a 241 target which they achieved with five wickets and 11 balls to spare. With Tim Bresnan playing for England, Liam Plunkett and Jack Brooks injured and Ryan Sidebottom and Steven Patterson rested, teenage seamer Ben Coad was given a first-team debut and he deservedly picked up the important wicket of Hamish Marshall.Marshall and Klinger shared an opening stand of 74 in 12 overs, Marshall setting the tone by driving Moin Ashraf over long-off for six. Coad gave away only one run in a tight first over and he went on to dismiss Marshall for 44, thanks to a great diving catch at short fine leg by Iain Wardlaw. But Klinger then found a more than capable partner in wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick, who came to the crease in place of Chris Dent who had left the field with a side injury during the Yorkshire innings.Gary Ballance just failed to hold on to a stinging chance at short cover from Klinger before the batsman drove Richard Pyrah for sixes either side of completing his 50 from 57 balls. Roderick also cleared the rope against Adil Rashid on his way to his own half-century from 55 deliveries. The stand had galloped on to 119 in 19 overs when Roderick tried to steer Wardlaw over the slip area and was caught behind for 63 from 66 balls with four fours and a six.Alex Gidman had his middle stump knocked back by Pyrah, who also had Benny Howell driving a high catch to Coad at mid-on, and Klinger robbed himself of a century by driving Ashraf to Ballance at mid-off, his 96 coming off 98 deliveries with six fours and three sixes. That left Gloucestershire on 226 for 5 in the 37th over but they were still very much in charge and Ian Cockbain and James Fuller saw them safely home.Yorkshire had reason to feel disappointed with their score of 240 for 6 after winning the toss on a good batting pitch as too many batsmen got out to poor shots when looking well set. The backbone to the innings was provided by Phil Jaques, who survived a difficult chance to Gidman at slip before he had scored and went on to make 70 off 86 balls with seven boundaries.Rashid contributed an unbeaten 43 from 30 deliveries and has not been dismissed in any of his last four innings in all competitions, boasting an average of 254.50 in the County Championship and 81.50 in the YB40.The experiment of Pyrah opening the innings with skipper Andrew Gale failed once again, Pyrah tamely driving Graeme McCarter low to Howell at cover in the second over to leave Pyrah with only 29 runs from five knocks.Gidman put down Jaques as he dived to his right and there was another fortunate moment for Jaques when he top-edged Fuller just out of 17-year-old debutant Miles Hammonds’ reach at midwicket. Gale added 52 with Jaques but after striking 26 off 28 balls, he attempted an ungainly pull outside off-stump and presented Gidman with an easy catch at midwicket.Ballance joined Jaques in a third-wicket partnership of 63, the highest of the innings, though Ballance survived a two-handed slip chance to Marshall and then a fierce on-drive to Gidman. Offspinner Hammond bowled much better than his final figures of 1 for 50 would suggest, his sole victim being Ballance when he holed out to Dent at deep backward square leg.Jaques completed his half-century off 66 deliveries with five boundaries while Adam Lyth advanced to 30 with some stylish shots until he went back to cut at Gidman and was bowled.Yorkshire were 164 for 4 in 30 overs and next to go was Jaques, who moved well outside off-stump in a bid to paddle Gidman and was bowled. Andy Hodd drove at David Payne and was caught at slip by Klinger and it took an unbroken stand of 52 in seven overs between Rashid and Will Rhodes to give the score a reasonable look.

Delhi Capitals notch up 203 despite Prasidh's four-wicket haul

A lot of the DC batters got starts but none of them managed to cross 40, with Axar’s 32-ball 39 the highest of the innings

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Apr-2025After a tough couple of days, the Ahmedabad pitch gave a bit of respite for batters on a hot Saturday afternoon. Karun Nair, KL Rahul, and Delhi Capitals’ (DC) middle-order batters got starts, but none of them crossed 39. Gujarat Titans (GT) used only five bowlers for 19 overs of the innings. Prasidh Krishna, who got hold of the purple cap, pulled the visitors back after a great start with a four-wicket haul.DC leaving out Jake Fraser-McGurk created the new opening combination of Abhisek Porel and Nair. Porel’s boundaries in the first over; a drive on the up over mid-off and a help-along flick behind square, showed that the pitch could be trusted. He fell to a full toss from Arshad Khan and Rahul’s shift in approach kept DC ticking. Rahul cut Siraj and was able to pump him down the ground. His start was ominous but an outswinging yorker from Prasidh trapped him lbw for 28 off 14 balls.Nair, too, got boundaries on both sides of the wicket. He was out in a relatively soft manner, ramping a shortish ball straight to deep third.A pristine cover drive from Stubbs off Prasidh brought up DC’s hundred in the ninth over. But he and Axar Patel were relatively sedate after that during the 53-run stand off 36 balls. They were happy to take Rashid Khan and Ishant Sharma for ones and twos.Rashid bowled quicker and at the stumps in his first two overs. He slowed the pace down in his third as Stubbs took him for six down the ground but then miscued a swipe across the line. Rashid ran back but couldn’t hold onto the catch close to the ring at mid-on. It led to a slog-swept six from Axar next ball.Ishant was struggling in the heat and went off the pitch after two overs. Siraj returned and removed Stubbs, who reverse swept a yorker and the ball lobbed to short third.GT’s death bowlers included a lot of yorker attempts with short balls peppered in between. It nearly worked first ball, but Rashid dropped Axar at the start of the 17th.The DC skipper could not hit a boundary in his last nine balls and was out caught behind. He charged Prasidh and tried to slap a length ball over cover and got an edge. Prasidh was on a hat-trick a ball later, thanks to a brilliant diving catch from Jos Buttler to dismiss Vipraj Nigam.Ashutosh Sharma was the primary boundary hitter in the final overs. He got a six and a four off Arshad early in his innings and hit two sixes off Prasidh later on. R Sai Kishore, whose only over was the final one of the innings, went for just nine, as GT inched past the 200 mark.

Kapil Lord's debut silences Strauss

ScorecardAndrew Strauss leaves the field after falling one run short of his half-century•PA Photos

It was a stop-start day in north London. Just as he was really getting started, Andrew Strauss was abruptly stopped. In overcast conditions that three times interrupted proceedings before bringing about an early close, Strauss played a bright and breezy innings, riding his luck until the point where he appeared to have rediscovered some missing vim, only to fall to the second ball delivered by Worcestershire’s England U-19 allrounder Aneesh Kapil.Kapil was making his first appearance at Lord’s so dismissing the England captain was quite a way to celebrate. Strauss played around a straight one – pretty much the only straight one in Kapil’s opening over as he struggled with the slope – and shortly afterwards the players went off for bad light and an early lunch. If that was hard luck on Strauss, then he had already used up a chunk of fortune in the first half-hour, when he played and missed, grafted and poked, and generally looked so out of nick that the only positive was that he did not actually get out.On two occasions edges failed to carry and he was also aided by a drop at third slip when he had made 5 only to settle and thereafter display some of the positive strokeplay either side of the wicket that is the mark of his batting at its best.Twice he cut Jones hard to the square boundary and, having hooked Richardson into the Grand Stand, looked well set to capitalise on his early reprieve. In fact, he might have reached 50 had his opening partner Sam Robson been quicker between the wickets. Strauss wanted three after a clip off his legs and could be seen gesturing as much to Robson, whose turning rather resembled an MCC member who had forgotten to make his order at the bar. Instead, it was Robson who saw out the next over, a maiden, and Strauss who fell lbw for 49 to Kapil’s medium pace.”It was a great honour to get out the England captain in my first over at Lord’s,” Kapil said. “I didn’t bowl as well as I could after that but I need to make sure I’m back on it tomorrow. I didn’t realise how big the slope actually was. People always talk about the slope and it’s the first time I’ve actually experienced it. It’s quite a big difference.”Kapil, who regards himself as a batsman who bowls, has impressed for Worcestershire since returning from England U-19s duty in Australia and he might one day get the opportunity to master the slope in an England shirt. At 18, he seems eager to prove himself. “Impossible is nothing,” was his response to being asked whether a result was still achievable, after a day and a half was lost to inclement weather and poor light, although that may have betrayed his youthful exposure to marketing as much as a attitude.Following Thursday’s wash out, conditions didn’t augur much better for Strauss’ third knock of the season, as Worcestershire predictably chose to bowl under grubby, cotton-wool clouds. Chris Rogers may have temporarily replaced Neil Dexter as Middlesex captain but he maintained their losing run at the toss and for the fourth time in four matches they were inserted. The expected tumble of wickets did not ensue, however, despite the tight lines initially bowled by Alan Richardson, the Middlesex old boy, and David Lucas. After a cautious start, in which they scored 16 runs from the first eight overs, with one boundary, Strauss and Robson soon found that this pitch had no anti-establishment leanings and proceeded to pull, cut and drive with alacrity. Michael Klinger was guilty of failing to cling on to a Strauss edge off Richardson – a sharp but catchable chance – and the pair went on to record Middlesex’s first 50-run opening stand of the season, before Kapil struck in the 21st over.A three-hour delay then ensued, during which a brief shower augmented the poor light, but when they got back on Robson sped to his half-century in a flurry of blows, taking just 11 balls to go from 29 to 50. Middlesex added 34 in 5.1 overs before another short interruption and then just as he and Joe Denly began to look increasingly comfortable, Robson got one that bounced and left him from Richardson and this time Klinger lived up to his name. Denly displayed some sweet timing, particularly driving down the ground, but after a length ball reared at him out of the gloom, the batsmen were offered the light one final time.Worcestershire’s most recent visit to Lord’s came during their promotion charge of 2010, in which they won three of their last four matches to gazump Glamorgan for second spot. On that occasion, they dismissed Middlesex for 66 on the final day to complete an unlikely 111-run victory. It might require a similarly remarkable feat for them to pick up their first win of the season here.
