Sunderland forward Chris Maguire must put his recent struggles into the past and respond against Gillingham on Saturday, after Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson opted to snub a potential recall for Aiden McGeady.

Parkinson has stated that he is yet to change his stance on McGeady’s future at the Stadium of Light, per the Sunderland Echo, having told the 34-year-old to train with the Under 23s and find a new club late last year.

McGeady has since returned to the North East after a loan spell with Charlton Athletic, raising the potential for Parkinson to go back on his word and utilise the former Republic of Ireland international after Sunderland’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end against Portsmouth before a draw at Rochdale.

A recall has yet to be offered as Parkinson has previously suggested McGeady’s exile came down to a desire to change the culture at the Stadium of Light, while protecting the pathway for young talents to breakthrough.

Parkinson intends to keep that path open for Elliot Embleton, having hinted as to why McGeady continues to be overlooked.

“Aiden at the moment has had to have an injection in his knee anyway,” Parkinson said, via quotes by the Sunderland Echo. “He had a spell of training with the U23s, but at the moment he’s in the treatment room with a similar problem to Jordan.

“He’s [Embleton] another player who I’m looking forward to seeing emerge for us. Unfortunately, we’ve had to be patient with him but if he can get through today, we’re expecting him in the run of games we have coming to get some minutes with the first-team.”

Parkinson suggesting he will continue overlooking McGeady and favour waiting for Embleton’s return should come as welcome relief for Maguire, who could have seen his place in the side come under threat otherwise.

Maguire has been struggling for form in Sunderland’s recent league fixtures following his return from the hamstring injury that prevented his involvement in the 0-0 draw at Charlton, with the £4,400-per-week forward offering just one shot on goal and no key balls in the defeat to Portsmouth before again failing to register a shot on target at Rochdale.

Parkinson even opted to haul Maguire off with 15 minutes still on the clock at the Crown Oil Arena, having lost three of his five ground duels, misplaced five of six attempted crosses, did not attempt any dribbles and lost possession 10 times, per SofaScore.

Gillingham on Saturday presents Maguire with a perfect opportunity to respond knowing that Parkinson is happy to omit McGeady in anticipation of Embleton’s return, but his slack run cannot continue for much longer.

Any further issues will surely begin to leave Parkinson considering the benefits of recalling McGeady, who former Celtic boss Neil Lennon lauded as being unplayable on his day during their time together at Parkhead.

“He’s a mercurial talent, and on his day is unstoppable,” Lennon said, via quotes by the Chronicle. “He has undoubted natural ability.”

Linked with a potential move for Szmodics, joining the likes of Sunderland with interest, Jackett has now seen rival League One club Peterborough United jump the gun.

Darren Ferguson’s side are said to have had a £1m-plus bid accepted by Szmodics’ parent club Bristol City.

The attacking midfielder made handful of appearances last term, spending time during the 2019/20 season on loan with League One side Peterborough, scoring four goals and providing four assist in 10 games.

Portsmouth fans will be excused for feeling a little bit concerned ahead of the new season. Pompey have made very little moves in the transfer window, other than strengthening their defence.

One thing Jackett must ensure is that his side finish in a play-off or better yet, automatic promotion place, and it remains to be seen if his current squad have the capability to do just that.

Missing out on Szmodics is a blow. He showed in his loan spell at the Posh last term that he can excel at this level, but Portsmouth must now identify other targets.

One possible angle for this agenda could be the fact that the Brazilian wide man once ditched Spurs’ transfer negotiations to join London rivals, Chelsea, instead back in 2013.

Whilst further members of the Spurs faithful may have their sights set on other reported targets, such as AFC Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser, who too is available on a free this summer.

At 26, he poses a long-term advantage for the club whether that’s an entire career in north London or creating resell value remains to be seen.

وسبق أن سمحت الحكومة البريطانية للاعبين والمحترفين بالحصول على استثناء من المكوث في الحجر الصحي عند دخول البلاد قدومًا من دول القائمة الحمراء، ولكنها ألغت ذلك الاستثناء مؤخرًا بسبب تفشي جائحة كورونا داخل البلاد، خاصة المتحور الحديث.

Prior to West Ham United’s game against Sheffield United, Robert Snodgrass had not played a single minute in the three latest Premier League matches.

However, in the latest two games, against the Blades and Newcastle United, the 32-year-old has been one of the Hammers’ most influential players.

The most obvious indication of this is that he scored in each game, as he clinically slotted the ball past Dean Henderson for the first, then hit a volley from outside the box in the latter to add respectability to the scoreline against Newcastle, even if the performance didn’t warrant it.

As indicated above, he also made an impact outside of his goal contributions, performing well in both an attacking and defensive sense.

2 goals from 4 shots, as per WhoScored, is a pretty prolific return, while his 7 key passes indicate that he is showing the type of creativity the Hammers should be utilising to get on the score sheet with greater regularity.

As well as playing passes in effective areas, Snodgrass kept hold of the ball well, maintaining a pass success rate of 88% and 81% respectively.

The former Scotland international also showed a willingness to work defensively, making 4 tackles across the two games, despite being dribbled past 5 times.

In addition to all of the above,  Snodgrass was the Hammers’ highest-rated player on WhoScored in each game, getting 7.6 and 7.9 respectively.

All of this indicated that Snodgrass has become an integral part of the team since coming back into the fold, offering a ray of light in what has been an underwhelming period for the club.
