Gerrard seeks to bolster Villa this summer

Aston Villa are set to add to their squad this summer, with Steven Gerrard looking as though he will get an opportunity to make his mark at Villa Park.

What’s the word?

That is according to a report from Birmingham Mail which claim that the 41-year-old has dropped his biggest transfer hint yet.

As per the report, it looks as though Gerrard is set to sign multiple players, and it could involve a free agent or two in the mix.

The Villa boss is also keen to get his business done as early as possible, saying: “I want them in yesterday. The quicker you get them in, the quicker you can get them settled. In an ideal world you want all your business done for when you come back for the first day of pre-season but that is unrealistic because people go away and do different things.”

The report mentions the likes of Luis Suarez, James Tarkowski, Divock Origi, Jesse Lingard, Conor Goldson, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah as free agents that Gerrard could bring in.

Gerrard means business

If his latest comments are anything to go by, Gerrard means business this summer. His reputation as both a player and a manager can be put to good use, with Villa now able to be resourceful in their business.

All of the aforementioned players could leave a positive impact for Gerrard, with the likes of Suarez surely making the mouths of the Villa faithful water amidst the prospect of another link-up with recent permanent signing Coutinho after their mutual stints at both Liverpool and Barcelona.

The 41-year-old’s ideology of getting players in as quickly as possible is yet another positive that fans can take from his approach as a manager, with him looking to bed players in as early as possible to have them ready for the start of the new season.

Whilst it has been a tough start to his managerial career in the Premier League, he clearly has a plan and he should get the opportunity this summer to bolster a squad who will be looking to challenge for the European spots in what will be Gerrard’s first full season in charge of Villa.

Doucoure costs Everton a win vs Watford

Everton have miraculously gone unbeaten in their last three Premier League games after taking a goalless draw and Frank Lampard will surely have mixed emotions about the result against Watford yesterday evening.

Of their remaining four games, considering Roy Hodgson’s side are already relegated from the league this season it could’ve been considered the Toffees’ easiest opportunity to take three points in their attempt to hold onto their Premier League status next season, so to take a draw from the game will be bittersweet.

Everton are two points clear of relegation rivals Leeds United and Burnley with three tough fixtures ahead against Brentford, Crystal Palace and then Arsenal at the Emirates on the last day of the season, so there’s no doubt the former Chelsea boss won’t be feeling too comfortable yet.

Despite having more possession (52%), more shots on target and more passes completed away from home last night, the Everton side could not find the creativity to take anything from the game against a weakened Watford side.

In fact, Everton had five shots on target in total over the course of the game compared to their opponent’s zero attempted shots on target, so to not convert a single one will be massively frustrating for Lampard. However, it won’t be surprising when you consider the number of goals the side have conceded (56) this season compared to the goals they’ve scored (37).

With that being said, Abdoulaye Doucoure played a huge part in missing his opportunities to progress the ball and build play during the tie at Vicarage Road on Wednesday night, which ultimately led to the stalemate result and opportunity missed to secure all three points in the game.

According to SofaScore, the 29-year-old attacking midfielder lost possession of the ball every 4.7 touches he made, which didn’t help in the slightest when it came to controlling the flow of the game.

He was also surprisingly poor in his defensive duties, losing the majority of his aerial and ground duels combined (6/16). He also struggled to assert his authority on his former employers, proving unsuccessful in 100% of his dribble attempts against the Hornets.

The Blues boss will be hoping that last night’s performance from the Frenchman will be a one-off considering he has played a crucial part in the two most recent victories prior to the Watford clash, and will hope that going forward the midfielder will step up to put in the hard work needed over the last three games to ensure they can remain in the Premier League next season.

'We can be top for long time' – Harbhajan

Harbhajan Singh has said that India have the potential to be No. 1 in Tests for an extended spell

Harbhajan Singh has said that India have the potential to be No. 1 in Tests for an extended spell. India have been top of the table for 11 months, and have stretched their lead to 11 points over South Africa after the 2-0 series victory over Australia. Of their previous 10 Test series India have lost only one – in 2008, when Ajantha Mendis inspired Sri Lanka to a 2-1 win.”We have the talent to be at the top of the table for a long time,” Harbhajan told ESPNStar.com. “We have proven that in the last nine months and we were at the top because we have won lots of games both in India and abroad. If we can achieve that then why can’t we be there for a long time?”The Australia series was one in which Harbhajan managed to hit form after some lacklustre performances against Sri Lanka in July, where he wasn’t fully fit. “It has been a very satisfying series. We won 2-0. I took 11 wickets and am quite satisfied with my own performance, but it could have been better.”One of the disappointments in the series for Harbhajan was his batting in the tight Mohali Test, where he lasted only three deliveries in two innings. “I was really upset. I have been working hard on my batting,” he said. “In the second innings, I got out to the second ball. I was really angry with myself and that was the time we needed a partnership to win that game. I didn’t remove my pads and was sitting with my pads on until India got the victory.”Harbhajan, who struggled with swine flu in Sri Lanka, said he had trouble with his shin in the lead-up to the Australia series. “I developed pain in my shin [while preparing for the Australia series],” he said. “My physio told me, ‘if you keep on playing with it, you might develop stress fracture’. Shin is where you can’t even have injection, but still I had to play, so I went ahead with pain killers and am really happy that I survived the two games.”India’s next Test assignment is a home series against New Zealand after which lies a tough tour of South Africa, a country where they are yet to win a series. “South Africa in South Africa will be very challenging. The wickets and conditions are different there,” Harbhajan said. “The boys are pretty confident; we have got the batting line-up to perform there, and a bowling outfit to take wickets there. We just need to have faith in our ability. If we can go on to win the series in South Africa, that will be a big achievement.”

Spiers hints at Neves staying at Wolves

There is no guarantee that Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves will leave the club in the summer transfer window, according to reliable journalist Tim Spiers.

The Lowdown: Neves exit talks

The 24-year-old’s future has been a major point of discussion in recent months, with a move away from Molineux potentially on the cards.

Neves has been linked with a switch to Barcelona and it may be that he feels it is time to test himself at a Champions League-playing club, with The Athletic even reporting the club are lining up £50m worth of talent from Sporting CP as a replacement.

A fresh update has given Wolves some hope that their star midfielder could remain at the club, though.

[freshpress-poll id=“388780″]

The Latest: Spiers hints at stay

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Spiers admitted that Neves could easily be moved on but added that he would only leave if the right offer comes along:

‘Neves was close to leaving last summer, there’s been interest from big clubs for years, so this is nothing new and he may stay. Clearly belongs in the Champions League but he also loves Wolves and is settled. Will only move for the right club. Key for Wolves is succession plan.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“388797″]

The Verdict: Would be huge for Wolves

The idea of Neves remaining at Wolves feels like an added bonus this summer, with the general assumption that he will move on to pastures new for big money.

He has been such an influential figure this season, finding his best form again and averaging 2.3 tackles per game in the Premier League, not to mention scoring four goals and registering two assists.

The likelihood is that the right offer will arrive for Neves and he will depart – if that does happen, it is vital that Bruno Lage uses the money wisely to bring in a tailor-made replacement.

Knappett's lone hand goes in vain

Worcestershire wrapped up a five-wicket win at home to Unicorns despite a fighting 91 from Josh Knappett

29-Aug-2010
Scorecard
Worcestershire avoided further embarrassment by the Unicorns after a rousing effort by their former reserve wicketkeeper, Josh Knappett, in the Clydesdale Bank 40 clash at New Road.Knappett made defiant 91 from 100 balls – beating his previous best in the competition by a single run – but the Unicorns’ total of 181 for 9 was not quite enough for them to repeat their victory when the teams met at Kidderminster last month. After seven consecutive CB 40 defeats, Worcestershire made it two wins in a row when edging home by five wickets with 12 balls to spare in a match trimmed to 37 overs a side because of rain. For Knappett it was special day back in Worcester where he spent three seasonsbut never played in a competitive match for the first team at New Road. Now back playing for Finchley in the Middlesex Championship, he has made his appearances for the Unicorns a showcase for his ability with the bat. This was his third half-century while scoring exactly 300 runs in 10 innings. Given that he scored a first-class hundred for Oxford UCCE before joining Worcestershire, it was no surprise to see him playing with such authority after the county attack had dismissed the Unicorns openers in six overs.Jackson Thompson clumped Jack Shantry’s second ball to mid-on and Chris Mutagh gave Chris Russell a debut wicket in the competition when Vikram Solanki held a slip chance at the second attempt. The part-timers ran into more bother when skipper Keith Parsons was caughtbehind off his one-time Somerset team-mate, Gareth Andrew, but Knappett built a new platform in successive stands of 50 with Sean Park (21) and Neil Hancock, the Devon-based Australian who hit two sixes off Shakib Al Hasan in making 29.Knappett, having hit 10 of the 15 boundaries in the Unicorns’ innings, cruelly missed the century he deserved when he attempted to pull Andrew and dragged the ball down on to his stumps. Andrew and Shantry finished with three wickets each in keeping Worcestershire’s target below 200 and Moeen Ali launched their chase with 40 from 26 balls in an opening partnership of 55 with Solanki. When Moeen departed in the seventh over, driving ex-Surrey seamer Neil Saker to mid-off, the early momentum was lost as Hancock conceded only 17 runs in seven overs and took two wickets, including Solanki at deep midwicket for 39.Off spinner Chris Brown also kept things tight in an eight-over spell for 33 and Knappett held a chance to remove Daryl Mitchell for 23, but James Cameron (25 not out) and Shaaiq Choudhry (21 not out) kept their nerve in a match-winning stand of 44.

Alex Crook makes Luiz to Spurs claim

Taking to Twitter, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has made a Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The Lowdown: Tottenham eye late moves…

Various reports from overnight and this morning indicate that Spurs are far from done as Antonio Conte reportedly eyes a plethora of late moves.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is believed that the likes of Atletico Madrid forward Yannick Carrasco and Brighton star Yves Bissouma are on the Lilywhites’ radar in what is looking to be a very interesting final day.

Some sources have even suggested ‘several’ incomings at Tottenham today, with talkSPORT reporter Crook now dropping an enticing claim on social media.

The Latest: Watch out…

Taking to Twitter, the journalist has said that Luiz to Spurs could be ‘one to watch’ today.

Villa’s midfielder has recently earned praise from his manager Steven Gerrard, but with 18 months left on his contract, Luiz has been linked with a move away from the Midlands club.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Since moving to the Midlands from Manchester City in 2019, the 23-year-old has impressed overall, with journalist Gregg Evans of The Athletic calling Luiz an ‘absolute star’, a ‘joy to watch’ and ‘fantastic’ (1874 Podcast, via This is Futbol) in the summer of 2020.

The Brazil international’s young age and Premier League experience could also be a real incentive for Spurs to move for him, especially considering that some sources suggest he could be available for around €35m (£29m).

In what is shaping up to be a very interesting deadline day at Tottenham, the coming hours could either shape or unravel this potential move.
