Warwickshire gave more substance to their conviction that they can yet mount a successful defence of their 2012 title with a well-won victory over Nottinghamshire

In the end, it was just too much for them. They had gone to lunch 78 for 2, which in many instances would seem to be a position that offered them every prospect of hanging on grimly. Steven Mullaney had been bowled by the 12th ball of the morning but Michael Lumb had been the only other casualty, caught behind off Keith Barker, with Tim Ambrose standing up.Alex Hales, in such woeful form in the four-day game this season that he played here only because Riki Wessels has a broken thumb, turned out to be their strongest line of resistance, batting more than four hours for only his second half-century of the season. But both James Taylor and Chris Read fell cheaply and when Hales finally chipped a ball from Patel to short mid-on a second body blow quickly followed as Samit Patel, who had appeared to have successfully reined himself in after a breezy start, was given out in circumstances he disputed, caught by one of the short midwickets when adamant he had played the ball from Rikki Clarke into the ground. His slow departure, accompanied by words and gestures aimed at umpire Trevor Jesty, may land him in trouble. With Read following him back shortly afterwards, the third of four victims for New Zealand offspinner Jeetan Patel, odds swung heavily in Warwickshire’s favour. Nottinghamshire reached tea with no further losses but the 35 overs remaining must have seemed a long stretch with only four wickets remaining.Patel bowled Ajmal Shahzad with the first ball of the final session and even though David Hussey was still there a sense of the inevitable hung over him. Andre Adams was caught by Ian Westwood at short leg off Patel and then came the new ball, taken after 84 overs.Hussey was well held low down at first slip by Chopra before Boyd Rankin, aware that the short ball would eventually reap a dividend, kept banging them in until Luke Fletcher obliged with a fended edge to third slip.Chopra believes Warwickshire, who had looked so forlorn only a couple of weeks ago, are back in the hunt after following up their defeat of Middlesex at Uxbridge. “I don’t know where we stand in points but we have to play Yorkshire next and Sussex are still to come here and if we are playing good cricket we are a match for most sides,” he said.”We had to be patient in this game. On wickets like this at Edgbaston, trying to get 20 wickets is always very difficult. Against Lancashire we made them follow-on and they batted out the day.”We didn’t enforce here and it was always in the back of your mind that it might have been the wrong decision but we felt if we added a few more runs to give us a big lead to work with and the wicket might deteriorate a bit more and that would be to our advantage with an international spinner in the side.”

Windy Wellington poses questions for New Zealand quicks

Shane Bond, the New Zealand bowling coach, said it had yet to be decided which of his bowlers will draw the short straw of needing to bowl into the wind at the Basin Reserve. The into-the-wind role in Wellington can be unlike any other ground in the world, as gales howl up the Cook Strait and right down the Basin. One of the problems for the current New Zealand side, which is set to retain the same balance of attack, is that the three quicks usually have the wind in their favour in domestic cricket.”It’s an interesting one,” Bond said. “All three are strike bowlers in their own right and do a different role for their domestic team, but it’s certainly something you have to consider when you come to Wellington – who will do that role.”All three aren’t used to doing it so hopefully we’ll get days where it isn’t too windy. But it’s something you also have to think about when you go back to domestic cricket; bowl some spells into the wind to prepare yourself for this level.”Although one of the quicks will, obviously, have to bowl into whatever wind there is with the new ball, Bond added that later in the day the job will probably be shared between the full set to ensure no one is overburdened.Bond is confident that the attack can recover from their large workloads in Dunedin. New Zealand’s three quicks – Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Neil Wagner – sent down 114 of the 170 overs in England’s second innings and will be treated carefully over the next two days.”We always knew the guys are fit, and can bowl a lot of volume, we just need to make sure they are fresh and ready to go,” Bond said. “I thought we bowled our best on day five even after a day in the park. I was pleased with that.”However, Matt Prior suggested the situation was to England’s advantage “I’m sure the New Zealand bowlers will be feeling it. Any seamer bowling 40 overs is a mammoth effort. I’d rather have been batting for 170 overs than fielding, let’s put it that way.”The standout performance in Dunedin came from Neil Wagner who bagged seven wickets in his first home Test. He bowled 43 overs in the second innings, including an afternoon spell on the final day of 8-2-20-2 that included the wickets of Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen. Bond, an aggressive fast bowler in his day, was hugely impressed with Wagner’s stamina.”That’s the one thing I’ve really enjoyed about working with Neil, that never-say-die attitude, he will always run in,” he said. “Even at the back end of the fifth day he was still running in hard after 40 overs, so that’s credit to him. When you go in with four bowlers there can certainly be no weak link in the chain in terms of volume.”There are a variety of predictions being made about the pitch for the second Test, ranging from another slow surface that was on show in Dunedin to a surface where the ball will fly through at good pace. What appears to be generally accepted, however, is that the spinners’ role will be very much a holding one.”It was a bowlers’ graveyard in the first game, it certainly wasn’t a 160 wicket,” Bond said. “I’d back our bowlers on wickets that do a bit. In terms of winning Tests that’s our best chance, some assistance to the quick bowlers.”Having briefly looked at the pitch on Tuesday, Prior said “it doesn’t look a slow one” although two days out from a match is really too early to judge a Test surface. Regardless of the pitch, Prior is aware that another poor first innings will not be tolerated despite the confidence boost England receive in saving the opening Test.”You can’t ignore that first innings,” he said. “But then you have to look at the way we kept fighting hard with the ball, and then the way we finished with the bat was sensational. We’re becoming a very hard team to beat, but we want to go that one step further and start winning.”

– A alta tecnologia desta bola proporciona muitos gols no Carioca.

Jogo no Pacaembu

Gladstone Dainty moves to silence USACA oppponents

John Aaron has been suspended as the secretary of the USA Cricket Association by Gladstone Dainty, the board’s controversial president, for what Dainty claimed were “comments damaging to the good standing and well-being of USACA”.In a move which brings into the open the battle between Dainty and those seeking to make him accountable, he claimed he had consulted “many of the USACA board members”, he told Aaron he was suspending him “immediately and indefinitely”.Aaron has been openly challenging Dainty over many aspects of the way he runs USACA in the wake of cancelled elections, the failure to replace Don Lockerbie, who Dainty sacked as CEO ten months ago, and a complete failure to communicate with factions of the board opposed to his actions as president. Dainty unilaterally cancelled a board meeting called by Aaron last weekend, even though it had been arranged in accordance with the constitution. The board has not met face-to-face for ten months.Aaron replied to Dainty that his action was “without basis and merit and is unconstitutional, and it impinges upon my right of free speech … in addition your reference to “consultation with many of the USACA board members,” is also unfounded and unsubstantiated, and at best refers to a minority”.The ICC, which has twice suspended the USA from international competition while Dainty has been in charge, has yet to comment, but it is likely it will be watching the unfolding events with increasing concern.

Somerset secure home semi-final

Somerset assured themselves of a home semi-final in the Clydesdale Bank 40 with a 40-run Group C win over Essex at Taunton

29-Aug-2011
Scorecard
Somerset assured themselves of a home semi-final in the Clydesdale Bank 40 with a 40-run Group C win over Essex at Taunton. But it was victory at a price as skipper Marcus Trescothick injured an ankle while batting and looks set for a lengthy lay-off as his team chase a first ever County Championship title, as well as the 40-over crown. Peter Trego (51), Chris Jones (45 not out) and James Hildreth (41) were the mainstays of Somerset’s 251 for five after winning the toss. Tom Craddock was the pick of the Essex bowlers with two for 38.In reply, the visitors managed 211 all out, Jaik Mickleburgh top-scoring with 56 and Graham Napier making 41. There were two wickets each for Alfonso Thomas, Steve Kirby, Arul Suppiah and Craig Meschede.Trescothick had made only 10 at that start of Somerset’s innings when he was hurt turning quickly when sent back by opening partner Trego attempting a quick single. He had to be helped from the field and later emerged from the dressing room on crutches. Trego went on to a 53-ball half-century, with six fours, and Murali Kartik (29) helped him take the score to 68, having been promoted in the role of pinch-hitter.Hildreth hit four fours before being caught and bowled by Craddock and Jones, on his one-day debut for Somerset, needed to exercise some caution as he and Meschede (17) guided their side towards a competitive total. Thomas then struck a quick blow, trapping Mark Pettini lbw in the second over of the Essex reply. But Adam Wheater (33) hit straight sixes off Suppiah and Meschede as he and Mickleburgh added 78 for the second wicket. From then on wickets fell steadily, Meschede removing Tom Westley and James Foster to catches by former Gloucestershire wicketkeeper Steve Snell – signed on a short-term basis by Somerset, whose two keepers Craig Kieswetter and Jos Buttler were away with the England Twenty20 squad.Napier did his best to launch a victory bid from 161 for seven, hitting a big six off Kartik in scoring his runs off 38 balls. But when he was pinned leg before by Thomas with 55 still needed Somerset were on the brink of their ninth group win. Snell is also likely to keep wicket for them on the opening day of the Championship clash with Hampshire at Taunton, starting on Wednesday.
