India spinners set up nine-wicket thrashing

India Women’s spinners stifled the Sri Lanka Women batting, squeezing them to 89 for 9 in their 20 overs, before the top three knocked off the target in 13.5 overs to complete a nine-wicket thumping in the third T20I in Ranchi. The win secured a 3-0 series sweep for India.Left-arm spinner Ekta Bisht was the standout bowler for India, claiming 3 for 17 in her four overs, while offspinners Anuja Patil and Deepti Sharma took 3 for 30 in eight overs between them. In a good team effort, all of India’s bowlers except Poonam Yadav kept their economy rates below 5.After opting to bat, Sri Lanka got off to a poor start, losing Oshadi Ranasinghe fourth ball, before captain Shashikala Siriwardene was run out four balls later. A 33-run partnership between Nipuni Hansika and Chamari Atapattu provided Sri Lanka respite, but it was brief – when Bisht had Hansika stumped off the first ball of the tenth over, it opened a passage of play in which five wickets fell for 11 runs in 5.3 overs. An eighth-wicket partnership of 39 off 29 balls between Eshani Lokusuriyage and Ama Kanchana then steered the tourists to their final total of 89 for 9.India made light work of the chase, as openers Vellaswamy Vanitha and Smriti Mandhana put on 64 in 8.4 overs. Vanitha’s dismissal was Sri Lanka’s only success with the ball; Veda Krishnamurthy joined Mandhana to knock off the remaining 26 runs with 37 balls to spare.

Wessels, Sammy star in Notts victory

A bristling half-century from Riki Wessels and an inspirational debut performance from West Indies international Darren Sammy helped Nottinghamshire to a 15-run victory over Durham in their NatWest T20 Blast match at Trent Bridge

He had hit bowler Paul Coughlin for six in the same vicinity just two balls earlier.Brendan Taylor was dismissed by a sharp reflex catch by bowler Arshad but that brought Wessels and Patel together and they applied pressure through the heart of the innings, especially to Ryan Pringle, who went for 19 in his second over.Wessels’ 50 came up from only 34 balls faced in an innings laced with a mix of sheer aggression and cunning improvisation.Patel became Coughlin’s second victim as he lobbed gently to cover and then Keaton Jennings – on as the sixth bowler – induced Wessels to hit firmly to John Hastings at short third man.James Taylor was caught behind cheaply and Steven Mullaney was run out looking for a quick single to mid-off but Sammy did not disappoint the youngsters holding up the six placards as he clubbed Hastings high over deep midwicket on his way to a quickfire 19.Durham’s reply got off to a poor start with Stoneman falling for nought in the second over helping Jake Ball into the hands of Hales at deep midwicket. Fellow opener Mustard tried to get after Luke Fletcher but failed to clear the back-peddling Patel at mid-off.MacLeod and Collingwood rebuilt the innings with a threatening stand of 47 in six overs but then perished to successive deliveries from Sammy. MacLeod had made 32 but then top-edged the St Lucian to fine leg and Collingwood, who scored 30, was bowled trying to whip to leg. Hastings was unable to provide a muscular response as he spooned Mullaney to point.Ryan Pringle scored 25 from just 12 balls as he added 61 for the sixth wicket with Muchall but the required run-rate had spiralled out of control by that stage and his dismissal by Fletcher, who took two for 29, meant 24 runs were still needed from the final over.Despite the loss, Durham remain top of the North Group, with six points from their five matches played, while Nottinghamshire have won two and lost one of their first three fixtures.

Kruger van Wyk to captain Central Districts

New Zealand wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk has been appointed captain of Central Districts for the 2014-15 domestic season. Van Wyk will take over from Kieran Noema-Barnett, who served as captain for the last two years and led the team to the Plunket Shield title in 2012-13.”Kieran’s done a great job over the last two seasons but he’s got aspirations to play at the international level and, from that point of view, we want to give him the optimal opportunity to concentrate on his own game,” Heinrich Malan, Central Districts’ coach, told . ”It’s got nothing to do with Kieran as such. We made the decision with him and to give him the best opportunity to play at a higher level. He’s on board with that and happy for us to have the best interests of his career at heart.”Van Wyk was captain of Canterbury Wizards when they won their first state championship title in 2008, but he was stripped off the captaincy during the 2009-10 season, after which he joined Central Districts. Since then, he has occasionally been captain in a stand-in capacity, and Malan believed van Wyk’s natural leadership skills boded well for the team.”He’s been an MA [Major Association] captain before and he’s played international cricket so, from a pedigree point of view, he ticks all the boxes. Every time we get ourselves in trouble, at 120 for 5 or something, he comes in at seven and he’s the grinder and the battler and he leads from the front in all aspects,” Malan said. “Kruger is a different kettle of fish when it comes to cricket. He overthinks and over-analyses, so it’s going to be good for me to challenge him in a different way and for him to challenge me.”Van Wyk has played nine Tests for New Zealand, but he was dropped after a poor series in Sri Lanka in 2012, when he made 41 runs at an average of 13.66. He has not played an international match for almost two years.

Pietersen cameo keeps up Surrey hopes

Kevin Pietersen played his most significant hand to date with an assured cameo to ensure Surrey were on the right side of the fine margins of T20. They are now within touching distance of the knock-out stages.

The scrimmage for the quarter-final berths in the ultra-competitive South Group is becoming increasingly fraught. Having coasted into a position of influence, Surrey’s hopes of advancing had suffered a setback of late but Kevin Pietersen played his most significant hand to date with an assured cameo to ensure his side were on the right side of the fine margins this time around. They are now within touching distance of the knock-out stages. If things had been different, Pietersen would have been across the other side of the capital resting up on the eve of a Test match. As it was, he – for the first time this season – showed why many regard the ECB’s decision to discard him as risible. Two trademark cover drives had the crowd purring and Surrey motoring in pursuit of Somerset’s 136 for 9.But his dismissal, succumbing to spin on a surface conducive to slow, take-all-the-pace-off bowling for 39, opened a window of opportunity for the visitors. But, unlike Surrey’s astute operators, Somerset weren’t able to apply the stranglehold to induce a middle-order wobble.Pietersen powerfully cut Max Waller to the boundary first ball of the tenth over but fell next delivery, attempting to replicate the stroke. When Robin Peterson haphazardly ran himself out in comical circumstances after a mix-up with Azhar Mahmood, a tense silence engulfed a sold-out Oval as another edgy finale loomed. But, with the equation set at ten required off two overs, Somerset were up against it and a couple of lusty blows from Chris Tremlett was enough. Had Marcus Trescothick – playing as a makeshift wicketkeeper in the absence of Craig Kieswetter – been able to throw down middle stump or Colin Ingram manage to scamper around from long-on to snaffle Mahmood in the final overs, things may have finished differently – but such are the fine margins in the shortest format.A two-wicket victory with a couple of deliveries to spare all but ends Somerset’s hopes of finishing in the top four but ensures there is a realistic chance of another sell-out crowd at The Oval this season. True, there was no Jason Roy fireworks – he fell for just 4 in the first over – and a two-paced surface didn’t allow flamboyant strokeplay but that suited the hosts.Gary Wilson hardly had to affirm the inevitable when the coin landed in his favour but that alone doesn’t guarantee his bowlers will execute the gameplan. Successive defeats hinted that their dependable strategy was unravelling.Glamorgan’s thrilling victory here five days ago apart, the team chasing at The Oval in the last ten domestic Twenty20 games had come away with the points and the hosts ensured Friday’s blip in the trend was just that. True, they were aided by a surface fabricated to suit their strengths but isn’t that what home advantage is about? While it would be easy for Wilson to turn to his slower bowlers to roll their fingers over the ball on a two-paced surface for all 20 overs, he placed just as much faith in his battery of seamers. Matthew Dunn is another promising cab off the Surrey ranks and highlights that there is more to the club that meets the eye of many. An inspired spell of 3 for 8 proved decisive and enough for him to earn the plaudits.Having being crashed to the fence first ball by Nick Compton, he stuck to his guns, bowling fast and full and was duly rewarded. Just as the visitors were beginning to motor, Compton played an atypically ugly heave to be caught at point. It was a needless shot as Somerset raced along at close to ten an over during the Powerplay. To that point, he had crunched and punched four boundaries in quick succession as he took Tillakartne Dilshan for 13 in the first over; that was the last we saw of the Sri Lankan with the ball. But, Somerset were unable to attune themselves to the pitch and Surrey’s astute methods. Their innings became stagnant fairly quickly after a brisk start.By the time Dunn returned to bowl the penultimate over, the wheels had come off the innings. He The quashed any hopes of a late burst as James Hildreth was caught by Zafar Ansari and next delivery, he exhibited his unerringly accurate yorker – it was far too good for Tim Groenewald. Alas, the hat trick ball was safely negotiated by Waller. but Dunn had already inflicted the damage.

Vohra, Gurinder give DAV easy opening win

Vohra’s half-century powered DAV to 170 for 5 in their 20, before left-arm spinner Gurinder Singh claimed a five-for to derail SRM’s chase.DAV chose to bat and were provided a fine start by their opening pair of Vohra – who made headlines last month when he was retained ahead of the IPL 2014 auction by Kings XI Punjab – and Jaskaran Singh, who was the player of the series in the last year’s Red Bull national finals. They put on 104 in under 13 overs, before No. 3 Ankit Kaushik steered the late flourish with 31 not out off 21. He did not receive much support – SRM did manage to strike with regularity towards the end – but the middle-order batsmen managed a big hit each to get the team up to 170.Opener Shahjahan provided the only contribution of note in the chase, with 50 off 45. The other opener, R Pradip Kumar, was run out in the second over, and the middle order was carved up by Gurinder, who took 5 for 25 in his four. Apart from Shahjahan, only two batsmen got into double digits, and neither of them touched 20. SRM were bowled out with three balls to spare, 52 adrift of their target. The win means DAV are through to the semi-finals, on February 6, while SRM are out of the competition.

Saving this Test 'little bit harder' than Adelaide – du Plessis

Faf du Plessis knew that even though this innings would require less time at the crease from him than Adelaide, where he last saved a Test for South Africa, this would be tougher because of conditions

Firdose Moonda in Johannesburg22-Dec-20130:00

‘Faf a player for the big occasion’

When Faf du Plessis batted seven hours and 46 minutes to save South Africa in the Adelaide Test, he was a man on debut who “thought it was possible” to bat for more than four sessions but actually “didn’t believe I could”. When he walked in with nine overs to go on the fourth evening against India at the Wanderers and a day of batting ahead of him, he “knew I could do it”.0:00

‘Drew inspiration from Adelaide innings’ – du Plessis

Experience can make all the difference.Du Plessis has played eight Test matches between Adelaide and Johannesburg, has scored another hundred in that time, battled through a barren period that has included a trip to the UAE and has been elevated to South Africa’s Twenty20 captaincy. With that has come understanding of what needs to be done when and how, and he applied that today. He knew that even though this would require less time at the crease than in Adelaide from him, it would be tougher because of conditions. “This wicket was a little bit harder,” he admitted. “In Adelaide, it was quite flat and there was not a lot of seam movement but I knew this was going to be a real challenge. There was consistent bounce outside off stump.”As he did then, he broke the task of eating the elephant into bites. This morning, he just wanted to bat time. When he was joined by AB de Villiers, his long-time school friend, they divided the time into mini-sessions. “The first challenge was to get to the new ball,” he said. “Myself and AB wanted to get through that, so I was really pleased with the way we did that.”The pair batted for 13.2 overs before lunch and six after, before the second new ball arrived. In that time, their partnership was worth fifty and their only concern was to stay together. Run-scoring remained difficult, especially with India’s seamers getting movement, and it was only after tea, when their stand had grown greater than 150, that they began to think a place in history was presenting itself.”I started to think about the win when myself and AB started getting some momentum and were scoring four runs an over quite regularly,” du Plessis said. “Our plan was to bat until the last 10 overs. From there, we’d try and get anything.”Faf du Plessis: “I was really happy with the way I played, constructed my innings and left the ball”•Getty ImagesThose thoughts were scuppered when de Villiers played on in the third over of the last hour. “Then I just wanted to bat the innings through,” du Plessis said. Nine balls later, JP Duminy was also out and du Plessis knew it all rested on him. “When JP got out, I knew I had to stay in because if I got out, we would be in trouble.”But at the other end, Vernon Philander ensured there was still a match to be won. “Vernon came in and made it closer. I just wanted to stay there. Until the last five overs, I just wanted to be there. I was very defensive, very tight.”But then, an error came. “Then I wanted to join the party,” he said. “In hindsight, I should have hit that ball over his head for four.” That ball is the one du Plesiss hit straight at Ajinkya Rahane and ran off. He was well short of his ground when the throw came in and knew the game was up.As he crossed the boundary to leave and Dale Steyn entered the ring, du Plessis was “too exhausted” to say anything. “When you get out, your concentration levels just go out,” he said. “I just went back to the changeroom and lay on my back and stared at the TV.”Not only had du Plessis spent more than a day batting, he had done a lot of it with the help of painkiller to numb his aching hand. “In between my thumb and index finger, the handle keeps jarring,” he said. Du Plessis was hit at the end of 82nd over but said that was not the source of his pain. “There was a lot of bounce so every time the ball hit the splice, the handle jarred into my hand. After 300 or whatever balls, it hurt.”With pain on one side, du Plessis at least had satisfaction on the other. His century was the first time he has crossed fifty in nine innings and ended a lean patch that has also seen him dropped from the one-day squad. His match-saving efforts put his career back on track.”I’m very satisfied that we pulled it through. This morning a lot of people wrote us off,” he said. “I was really happy with the way I played, constructed my innings and left the ball.”He was also pleased with how he put a lid on his feelings as the innings went on. “I was very good until I got a 100. A lot of emotion comes through your body then.” Du Plessis celebration after reaching the landmark was emphatic as he fist pumped multiple times and soaked in the warm applause, an indication of how much it meant to him.”Over the last eight months, we played a lot of cricket in the subcontinent and a lot against Pakistan. They’ve got a really good attack. I was disappointed to be left out of the one-day squad but I can use this as a stepping stone to get back,” he said. “It was also nice to go up the order. Jacques is not going to bowl 25 overs in every game where he needs a rest [before batting]. I enjoy going up the order. Hopefully I can get more opportunities.”Du Plessis batted at No. 4, in Kallis place because team management felt the allrounder needed an extra night’s rest after bowling more than his usual quota of overs. In a position of such responsibility, du Plessis did his job and more by putting South Africa in a position from which they could win.Although Graeme Smith said the decision to go for draw needed to be “appreciated” du Plessis expressed some sadness that South Africa did not win. “The position we got to, we’d have liked to win the game and be part of the best Test match ever,” he said. “You always want to be the guy at the end that is the hero, but I couldn’t do that today.”
