Steven Smith 'intrigued' by England's Bazball cricket

Opposition players around the world are posing similar questions about the remarkable style of play

Andrew McGlashan07-Jul-20223:43

Is Bazball the way to go in Test cricket?

England’s remarkable performances against New Zealand and India have certainly been noted around the cricket world, so much so that “Bazball” made an appearance at Australia’s net session in Galle on Wednesday.Steven Smith, who is among the Australians to have kept an eye on the matches in England, was heard shouting the term after playing a straight and later joked that Australia coach Andrew McDonald had already heard enough of it.But there is certainly a fascination about England’s new approach where they have chased down four consecutive last-innings totals, capped off by their record 378 for 3 at Edgbaston and which has seen them score at 4.60 an over across the four matches.Related

Bazball broken down, it's pretty simple really

A familiar theme has been now long they can keep it going for, although that question was also posed during the New Zealand and India matches – which included bowlers of the caliber of Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami – and how it will adapt to different conditions.”I’ve watched a little bit of it, it’s certainly been entertaining,” Smith said. “Even someone like Alex Lees started to come down the wicket when he was on nothing. It’s been exciting. I’m just intrigued to see how long it lasts, if it’s sustainable.”If you come on a wicket that’s got some grass on it and Josh Hazlewood, [Pat] Cummins and [Mitchell] Starc are rolling in at you, is it going to be the same? We’ll see what happens. I’m intrigued by it all, we’ll see what happens.”Joe Root plays a reverse scoop•Getty ImagesSmith also noted how Australia have pushed the scoring rate in some recent matches, citing the Hobart Ashes Test where they scored at four-an-over in the first innings, and the first Test in Galle where they went at 4.53, although England’s run chases over the last few weeks have taken things to a new level.”The pink-ball game in Hobart, when Heady and Marnus started to take the game on, the wicket was doing plenty so it was [to] counteract, put some pressure back on the bowler mentality, and it worked on that occasion,” he said. “Is it going to work every time? I don’t know.”England’s next opponents, South Africa, are also talking a good game ahead of the Test series in August where they will be able to select a pace attack including Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Duanne Olivier and the towering Marco Jansen”I think the big challenge in playing that way is that you are not going to be consistent,” Rassie van der Dussen told . “If we come out with a good bowling performance or it doesn’t go well for them, there will be a few question marks if they get bowled out cheaply in a first innings, or guys get caught hitting the ball straight up or playing loosely.”Those are the challenges for them, we have the plans, we know what has worked for us. They are coming with a slightly different mindset and strategy, which has gone well for them. Let’s see them do that against our bowlers.”

He loves Rangers: Clement eyeing "solid" long term Tavernier replacement

James Tavernier is having a season to forget. The Rangers captain has been one of the club’s star performers in recent seasons, especially last year when he scored a hugely impressive 24 goals and provided a further 12 assists in all competitions.

This term, however, he’s managed just two and five respectively in 24 games, while his performances have also come under heavy criticism.

If Tavernier is sold: Rangers already have 3 perfect future Ibrox captains

After the Gers were thrashed 4-1 by Ligue 1 outfit Lyon in the Europa League back in October, Tavernier was given a 2/10 rating for his performance by Rangers News. The 32-year-old has also recently been linked with a possible move away from Ibrox, with clubs in Turkey reportedly circling.

Clement wants Kasanwirjo

Against Lyon, Tavernier was dragged off after an hour and replaced by Neraysho Kasanwirjo, who is spending the season on-loan at Ibrox from Eredivisie side Feyenoord.

The 22-year-old has also featured on 11 other occasions this term, mostly as a substitute, though he is now set to miss the remainder of the campaign through injury. Kasanwirjo suffered a knock to his knee while playing for the Netherlands Under-21s against England earlier this month. He’s since undergone surgery and is not expected to feature again this term.

Neraysho Kasanwirjo

Despite this, Rangers boss Philippe Clement is still keen on completing a permanent move for the Dutchman, according to Mail Online. The publication claims that Rangers see Kasanwirjo as a long-term replacement for Tavernier, having displaced him from the starting line-up on multiple occasions before succumbing to injury. Rangers retain an option to buy Kasanwirjo, who is valued at £1.5 million, at the end of the season.

Kasanwirjo "disappointed"

After Rangers’ 1-0 win over St Johnstone in Scottish Premiership at the weekend, Clement opened up about Kasanwirjo’s injury.

“Nana’s operation was good, but he will be at least out for four to six months. So we cannot count on him, so we will see at the end of the season how things go,” said the Belgian boss.

Clement said that Rangers have an agreement with Feyenoord that will see Kasanwirjo return to his home country to undergo his rehabilitation, but that he won’t lose contact with the defender.

“I stay in touch with Nana, who was really disappointed not to continue the work he’s been doing, because he loves the club, he loves the dressing room, even loves the staff – that doesn’t happen so much,” he explained. “So we will see at the end of the season how it will be with him, but we cannot count on him in the next couple of months.”

Kasanwirjo has previously been described as “solid” by BBC Sportscene pundit Marvin Bartley, who said of the former Groningen star: “He came into the team and did very well, he can definitely gallop and wants to play the ball forward when he can and he’s also technically very good.”

In January, an announcement was made that ex-Chelsea and Manchester City defender Bridge was set to compete with YouTuber KSI in a boxing match in Manchester on March 29. The former left-back, however, pulled out after KSI launched a verbal attack on his opponent over the Terry fiasco. Once team-mates for Chelsea and England, Bridge and Terry had a major fallout in 2009 after the Blues legend allegedly had an affair with Bridge's former partner and French model Vanessa Perroncel.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Boxing promoter Mams Taylor, though, has claimed that the YouTuber later realised his mistake and even apologised to the former player. He hopes that the 44-year-old will agree to compete in a boxing match in future. Speaking to , Taylor said: "We all like the sensationalism of a beef, we all like, 'Oh my God, I can't believe he said that' to a degree. But I don't want anyone walking away and feeling like, 'Oh man, this gave me a horrible feeling or it affected me psychologically in a negative way or or it hurt my family'.

"So I don't want anyone to feel that way. I want them to have a positive experience from it, so I hope he can put that incident behind him and maybe I'll match make him with someone who's not got as much of a gift of the gab. And they have similar vulnerability where they agree to go in respectfully. But I'd love to see him in the ring and what I'd really like is to have him in the ring to show the fans who were naysayers, that he can actually fight."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Taylor added: "I know JJ [KSI[ the next day felt bad and he's like, 'Do you think I should DM him?' And I said, yeah, just say what's in your heart and he goes, 'Yeah, I'm obviously just trying to promote this and I thought he knows the landscape of Misfits and how it can go left with, with things like that.'

"I think he realised maybe he went a step too far. He acknowledged that he went too far and he didn't do it publicly to make it a PR thing. He personally wanted to actually DM him and just say, 'Hey man, I'm sorry, door's open if I can make it up, if there's anything we can do. I didn't want to upset you. I just wanted to promote the fight.' I think Wayne Bridge has spoken about that somewhere, I'm not sure, but I think he acknowledged it and I think we move on."

With Bridge pulling out of the March 29 fight, KSI will now fight former MMA star Dillon Danis in Manchester instead.

Stewart must sell £3m Rangers flop who Hartson hailed as a "good signing"

Glasgow Rangers recorded a stunning 4-1 away victory against OGC Nice in the Europa League on Thursday evening. Can this result prove to be a catalyst for the Light Blues ahead of the busy festive season?

There is no doubt Philippe Clement is still under pressure despite the win, as more consistency is required amid a run of dismal results and performances.

Phillipe Clement

Indeed, the club have won only two of their previous five Premiership fixtures, which has seen them slip out of contention, currently occupying third place in the league table, 11 points behind Celtic at the summit.

Change is required urgently. The announcement of Patrick Stewart as the new CEO is a step in the right direction.

Rangers' appointment of Patrick Stewart as new CEO

It is no secret that the club’s problems start from the very top. James Bisgrove left his role as CEO in May and Stewart’s arrival on December 16 is the first of the club replacing him.

This lack of hierarchy has clearly impacted the running of the club in recent months. Hopefully, the new appointment will be the start of something new.

Rangers’ Interim Chairman, John Gilligan, praised the incoming CEO, saying: “On behalf of the board, I’m delighted to welcome Patrick to the club as CEO.

“Patrick comes with an excellent reputation and background, bringing extensive experience of operating at senior levels during his 20-plus years in football.

“The board continues in discussions with several excellent candidates for the role of Chairperson and expect to make an announcement of an appointment in the coming weeks.”

Stewart spent a large portion of his career at Manchester United, working with Sir Alex Ferguson, first as a General Counsel and Company Secretary, before joining the board of directors in 2019.

This culminated in Stewart becoming the CEO of United last year, and it appears as though the Light Blues have managed to secure a major coup by appointing the Scot.

He faces a massive challenge to turn around a faltering side, however. With the January transfer window opening soon, will he be able to work his magic?

Who Rangers must sell in January

Having spent millions during the summer transfer window, if Clement wishes to bolster his squad for the second half of the season, a few players must be moved on.

Kieran Dowell is a prime candidate. His contract expires in 2026, which means January is the last real chance for the Gers to properly cash in on the midfielder, who has played just ten times for the club this term.

Kieran Dowell for Rangers.

Perhaps more of an unrealistic option, but could James Tavernier also be moved on in the winter window? The captain was dropped to the bench for the fourth time in six games for the away clash against Nice.

Dujon Sterling was outstanding in his place. Like Dowell, Tavernier’s deal expires in 18 months, which could suggest cashing in at the start of the year is the most logical option.

One plyer that must be sold, however, is Rabbi Matondo, who has spent more time on the treatment table than out on the pitch for the Ibrox side.

Rabbi Matondo's start at Rangers

The Light Blues were coming off a season which saw them not only win the Scottish Cup but also reach the final of the Europa League, losing on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville.

To build on this, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst spent millions on signing Antonio Colak, Ridvan Yilmaz and Ben Davies to improve his squad.

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

Another player brought in was Matondo, who joined from Schalke for a fee in the region of £3m having shone for Cercle Brugge during 2021/22.

His move to Rangers was praised by fellow Welshman and former Celtic striker John Hartson, who was speaking on Go Radio, saying:

High praise indeed. Considering he was only 21 upon his arrival in Glasgow, the winger had plenty of potential to be a future star for the club.

Two and a half years later, things haven’t quite worked out as planned…

Rabbi Matondo’s Rangers statistics

The Welshman struggled with injury during his first season, a theme that continues to this day, as he made only 28 appearances, with 11 of them coming from the starting XI.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

He registered five assists in those games, but it was hardly the form of someone who cost £3m to bring in.

It looked like Michael Beale was ready to move him on in the summer of 2023, but he looked rejuvenated during the first few weeks of the season. He scored against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League and this goal looked like it could be the start of something impressive.

A few weeks later, he suffered a knee injury which kept him out for several weeks, but he did net a stunning last-gasp equaliser against Celtic at Ibrox in March.

While he may be able to produce moments of magic, the consistency levels simply aren’t there for the player to shine regularly for the Light Blues.

This season, for example, Matondo has scored twice and registered three assists in just six matches, which, on the surface, is superb.

However, a hamstring injury suffered a few months ago has kept the player out since the beginning of September, and it looks like he is still a couple of weeks away from returning.

For this reason, Stewart should be actively looking to cash in on the 24-year-old when January comes around. If they can secure a decent fee for the winger, then it could give Clement some funds to improve other areas of the team.

Stewart’s task is a tough one, but if he gets off to a good start, then his appointment could be the start of something good for Rangers.

Liverpool making regular checks to hijack next Xabi Alonso over Real Madrid

Looking to land a player dubbed the next Xabi Alonso, Liverpool officials are now reportedly making regular checks to hijack Real Madrid’s pursuit and get one over on their European rivals off the pitch.

Liverpool transfer news

Liverpool’s season couldn’t have gone much better than it has done so far. Although Arne Slot is often quick to remind reporters of his side’s one defeat against Nottingham Forest, even he will be satisfied with a place at the top of the Premier League and Champions League. His players have continued their form in the international break too, with Curtis Jones scoring an audacious debut goal for England in a standout performance against Greece.

In arguably their strongest position to win the Premier League since their victory in the 2019/20 season, the Reds could be in a perfect position to welcome further reinforcements in both the January transfer window and next summer to take Slot’s side up yet another level.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Liverpool officials are now making regular checks on Javi Guerra and are looking to hijack Real Madrid’s move to sign the Valencia midfielder in 2025. The Spanish giants have been linked with the 21-year-old in the last year but could now lose out courtesy of the Reds.

Liverpool willing to ditch Tsimikas in shock swap deal for "great" £40m ace

The Reds are after a significant upgrade…

ByTom Cunningham Nov 16, 2024

A player likened to Alonso and tipped to succeed his role for Spain in the future, Guerra will seemingly get the chance to pick between two of the Spaniard’s former clubs in an attempt to take a similar path to the midfield legend.

It would represent quite the statement of intent if Liverpool sealed glory in the current campaign and then beat Real Madrid in pursuit of a midfield reinforcement next summer.

"Intelligent" Guerra can follow Alonso path

One of the best midfielders of his generation, Alonso first swapped La Liga for the chance to join Liverpool in 2004 in what was truly the beginning of an incredible rise full of moments to savour. Now, Guerra can take a similar path. Like Alonso swapped Real Sociedad for Merseyside, the young midfielder can swap Valencia for a chance to reach Anfield stardom.

Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra.

Still just 21 years old, the Valencia star has quite the decision to make, that’s for sure. Of course, not many would be shocked by such a big move for Guerra, who was described as “intelligent” by Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig earlier this year.

After Liverpool missed out on Martin Zubimendi last summer, Guerra could take the opportunity that the Sociedad star decided to reject next summer by completing Slot’s midfield once and for all. Amid such high interest, the Spaniard will be one to watch when 2025 arrives and Liverpool set their sights on reinforcements.

Travis Head to captain Sussex red-ball side for 2022

Australian batter says he has “unfinished business” at club where he will play all three formats

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Nov-2021Travis Head will play for Sussex across all formats in 2022, taking over as their red-ball captain.In-form batter Head, who has played 19 Tests for Australia, will arrive in England ahead of Sussex’s opening LV= Insurance County Championship fixture after he, and the club, endured a frustrating season in 2021.Having agreed to join Sussex for the 2020 season, Head’s arrival was pushed back by a year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Travel difficulties and a late finish to the Australian domestic season meant he arrived late for Sussex’s 2021 campaign. He failed to reach fifty in six Championship games, scoring 183 runs from 11 innings as the club finished bottom of Division Three. He also played nine T20 Blast games and seven Royal London Cup 50-over matches for the club, but had to leave Sussex early to meet quarantine requirements ahead of the current Australian season.Head welcomed his latest Sussex appointment, saying there was “unfinished business” personally and for the club.”I can’t wait to come back to Hove,” Head said. “There was a great environment last summer and I loved being part of Sussex.”There’s unfinished business for me and the squad as a whole, so I was very eager to come back, compete hard and perform well. I’m over the moon to be getting the opportunity to do that. I’m equally pleased to be captaining the Championship side and I want to lead from the front as we continue the journey to bring success back to the club.”Head takes over the first-class captaincy from Tom Haines, who was the Championship’s leading run-scorer for 2021 and took over the role after Ben Brown was stood down as skipper during the season.Head will lead a young Sussex outfit, which has lost a host of experienced players, including Chris Jordan and Phil Salt, who left to join Surrey and Lancashire respectively, and Stuart Meaker and Mitch Claydon, who have retired.Ian Salisbury, Sussex’s Championship and one-day head coach, described Head as “exactly the kind of person we want in our environment and around our youngsters”.”Travis was incredible in the way he conducted himself last year, whether in the dressing room or on the field,” Salisbury said. “[He] has been very honest about how he struggled after missing the start of last season – it takes even the very best a bit of time to adjust to English conditions – but he worked really hard and by the end of his stay we started to see what he can offer.”With that in mind, it was crucial that he was able to join us from the start in 2022. He’s a fine, fine player and this gives himself the best chance scoring plenty of runs for Sussex.”Head has enjoyed a strong start to the Australian season as captain of South Australia, averaging 54.20 after three Sheffield Shield matches with a top score of 163 against Western Australia in the opening round. He is the leading run-scorer in the Marsh Cup one-day competition, after scoring 230 off 127 balls in South Australia’s victory over Queensland last month.

Liverpool in race to sign "commanding" £84m defender ahead of Real Madrid

Liverpool are believed to be interested in signing a “commanding” young star who is also wanted by Real Madrid, according to a new transfer update.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds continue to be linked with possible new signings, having had a quiet summer transfer window, with Cristhian Mosquera emerging as a rumoured target for Arne Slot. The Valencia centre-back is also thought to be wanted by Atletico Madrid, having represented Spain at the 2024 Olympics earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar has been backed to move to Liverpool, as the Merseysiders potentially look to completely change their goalkeeping setup, amid concerns surrounding Alisson’s injuries and Caoimhin Kelleher’s long-term future at Anfield.

Mile Svilar for AS Roma.

Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush is arguably one of the best players in the Bundesliga currently, having scored eight goals in just six appearances in the competition this season, and the Reds reportedly see him as a strong attacking target. He could even be seen as a replacement for compatriot Mohamed Salah, should the Egyptian legend fail to agree a new deal.

It looks as though Liverpool are continuing to look at attacking reinforcements, despite the wealth of talent already at Slot’s disposal, and Borussia Dortmund ace Karim Adeyemi is seen as another possible addition at Anfield, too.

Liverpool interested in "commanding" £84m gem

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are keen on signing highly-rated Palmeiras centre-back Vitor Reis, with the Reds doing their “due diligence” with him, showing that Michael Edwards isn’t messing around.

The 18-year-old has an £84m release clause at the Brazilian club, with his current deal not expiring until December 2028, and the report states that Real Madrid and Arsenal have “joined” the Reds in the race to snap him up.

Reis looks like a footballer with an immense amount of potential, having already made 15 appearances for Palmeiras at senior level, despite still only being 18 years of age.

He has also been capped a combined 11 times for Brazil at youth level, appearing on eight occasions for the Under-17s and enjoying three outings for the Under-16s. Football analyst Ben Mattinson has also waxed lyrical about his potential, saying:

“Vitor Reis’ rise to global recognition from elite clubs is massively down to his impressive mentality. When watching him, you can see that bravery in every action. He has a commanding, confident presence that’s rare in such a young defender. Many early leadership traits have been shown already and when I first saw him play for Brazil’s U17’s, his leadership shone amongst his peers.”

The lure of Madrid is also great, and Arsenal are an exciting project under Mikel Arteta, but Edwards may still work his magic and make Reis believe Liverpool is the best place to come, in order to aid his development.
