Tottenham Hotspur’s downward spiral got a whole lot worse on Sunday afternoon.

Ange Postecoglou’s side responded to their 1-0 defeat away to Bournemouth in the week with a 4-3 defeat at home to Chelsea.

The North Londoners found themselves 2-0 up early in the first half, but some horrendous defending in the second 45 saw the Blues complete a memorable comeback.

Unfortunately, there is no time to rest and recover for the Lilywhites as they’ve got an incredibly tough away game against Rangers to deal with tonight, but given the onslaught of games, Postecoglou has to make some changes, such as dropping Dominic Solanke for a youngster previously compared to Harry Kane.

Why Solanke should be dropped

Okay, so the first thing to clear up is that this isn’t necessarily down to Solanke’s form, as even though he’s not been exactly prolific since his £65m move to North London, the former Cherries ace has been impressive, and even scored against the Blues over the weekend.

Instead, Postecoglou should be looking to rest the club’s main number nine due to his importance.

As things stand, the Englishman’s tally of seven goals is the second-best in the entire squad, behind only Brennan Johnson, so the club must ensure he is not played into the ground and kept fit and firing to hopefully fire the club into some better form as the season progresses.

It was his absence in the game against Fulham that clearly defined his importance to the team, as while Son Heung-min can still be a useful player, he simply cannot fulfil the role of a number nine in Postecoglou’s system, as he lacks the ability to hold up the ball and bring others into play from central areas.

So, with Solanke hopefully getting some important rest tonight and Son simply not an option, who should the manager turn to?

The player to replace Solanke

The player who deserves a chance to lead the line tonight is academy product Will Lankshear, who has already won some flattering comparisons to the legendary Kane.

The one to make the comparisons was Spurs writer Alasdair Gold, who was full of praise for the youngster after a particularly impressive Premier League 2 performance in which he scored a hat-trick last season.

Speaking on his podcast, he described the forward as having “a little bit of the [Harry] Kane physique about him,” before going on to wax lyrical about his “lovely touch” and the partnership he had with Jamie Donley, which reminded him “a little bit of Kane and Son.”

However, away from comparisons to the England and Spurs great, the teenage phenom is also an incredibly promising marksman in his own right, with a record of 31 goals and five assists in just 41 appearances for the club’s various youth sides.

Moreover, while he foolishly got himself sent off in his previous start against Galatasaray, he also scored his first senior goal and seemed relatively unbothered by the incredibly hostile atmosphere, which bodes well for how he’d deal with Ibrox.

Ultimately, while he’s not ready to replace Solanke on a permanent basis, Lankshear has the raw ability and physical stature to be a brilliant stand-in, and as his role in the squad increases in the coming years, he could develop into a genuine rival for the former Bournemouth man.

Ruben Amorim’s appointment has injected a newfound sense of excitement into the Manchester United fanbase after years of discontent under the former management team.

Amad Diallo is another player currently in the form of his life at Old Trafford, also switching positions into a right wing-back role rather than his usual attacking berth that he’s featured in since his transfer in 2021.

However, it’s been a masterstroke by the 39-year-old, registering three assists in his first two Premier League starts during his tenure, with the Ivorian’s relentless pressing making him the perfect fit for the manager’s 3-4-2-1 system.

The former Atalanta starlet has all the tools to be a real hit and continue his upward trajectory over many years to come, hopefully playing a vital role in the club’s potential return to league glory under the guidance of the ex-Sporting CP boss.

Amorim can also utilise the incredible youth system in place in Manchester, allowing him to unleash multiple talents who are more than capable of following in the footsteps of the aforementioned talents and become a hit with the supporters.

United are lucky to possess numerous impressive youngsters within the Carrington training base, with the hierarchy keeping one eye on the future given their investment in recent times.

Striker Chido Obi Martin arrived from Arsenal over the summer, with the 17-year-old generating excitement within the fanbase given his goalscoring exploits.

The 17-year-old has struggled with injuries in recent times, restricting him to just three appearances, but when he has featured, he’s demonstrated his elite-level quality.

Lacey, who’s been dubbed as “exceptional” by analyst Ben Mattinson, produced a moment of magic against Tottenham Hotspur a of couple months ago, showcasing his excellent dribbling and ball-carrying ability.

He’s since drawn “so many comparisons” to Manchester City’s Phil Foden, as per Mattinson, for his ability to drift inside onto his left foot, showing quality well beyond his tender age.

Such a skill set could see him become Amorim’s next Diallo, able to operate in an attacking area, or even slightly deeper as a wing-back, with his intelligence at youth level making him a perfect fit for the new role implemented by the boss.

He certainly will need time to make an impact at Old Trafford, but his ability has given the supporters a reason to be excited – and who can blame them?

Given the current crop of talent emerging throughout the club, it’s certainly an exciting time to be a United supporter, with the manager having all the tools at his disposal to potentially end their decade wait for a league triumph should he utilise the options he has correctly.

Sterling, who boasts over 80 caps for England at international level, was a serial trophy winner during his time at City as well – and his experience on the most noteworthy stages of high-level football was seen as a real plus-point of his addition on deadline day.

Arsenal were offered a late summer chance to sign Sterling on a temporary deal from Chelsea after head coach Enzo Maresca deemed him surplus to requirements and not part of his long-term plans at Stamford Bridge.

It was a chance they grabbed with both hands, as manager Mikel Arteta knows the player very well from their time together at Eastlands. Commenting on his decision to reunite with the £162,500-per-week winger, Arteta revealed that it took him “10 seconds” to green-light a deal for Sterling.

“The first call I had with him I knew in the first 10 seconds we have to bring him because he really wanted it,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s decision to sign Sterling.

“That was my only question mark: ‘What stage is he at in his career?’ After ten seconds I knew already before the next questions that we needed him here. What I see is hunger. He’s a player that wants to play every minute of every game. When that’s not the case, he’s not happy.

“He wants to play every single day and I see that. His commitment and the level of energy that he’s bringing to the team is a big boost.”

Fast-forwarding to now, Sterling has endured a slightly mixed start. He’s off the mark in terms of both goals and assists, but his only contributions in that regard came during a 5-1 win over Bolton Wanderers in the EFL Cup.

The former Liverpool forward is yet to bag a goal or assist in the league over his four appearances, having started just two top-flight matches with his other cameos coming off the bench.

What Chelsea are ready to give Arsenal in talks over Sterling deal

However, there is still plenty of time for Sterling to convince Arsenal chiefs to sign him permanently.

According to Football Transfers, Chelsea have already offered the north Londoners an opportunity to take him off their hands at the end of the season. As well as this, Chelsea are ready to give Arsenal a bargain price for Sterling.

It is believed the Blues are prepared to sell for around £25 million, which is far below Sterling’s estimated value of around £38 million. However, while this may seem generous, Edu is only willing to pay around £15 million as things stand – so this could lead to a stalemate in talks.

It is added that Arsenal are currently debating the possibility of striking a permanent move for Sterling internally, so there is still plenty of work to be done before he’s a Gunners player for years to come.

The meeting with players went over some broad expectations, which one player explained wasn’t something they hadn’t heard before. ESPNcricinfo understands Ramiz was keen to impress on the players the need to play “fearless cricket”, even using the ” (you must not worry)” expression that has become synonymous with the prime minister (who said it when addressing the country during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic), as well as ensuring the team has every resource available to play modern cricket.The players did not just listen, however, and shared with Ramiz their own views and apprehensions.Be fearless … but how?
Ramiz urged players to play fearless cricket using England and India as specific examples, but the players questioned the lack of support to that end by the board and management. One of the more resonant points made was that players are constantly in fear of being dropped after just a couple of bad games, which breeds insecurity. The point being made was that playing fearless cricket doesn’t just require the players to be so, it requires fearlessness from the board and management. “Its not like the previous management didn’t tell us to be fearless and we didn’t want to but there is always a difference in saying and actually making it possible,” one player said. “It’s not just players but the entire system has to be fearless to make it work.””This isn’t the first time we are hearing this,” one player said. The player said even Misbah had come with the same mindset but often ignored the circumstances and conditions of the game when expecting it. “If we have to be fearless in going for 350 in an ODI,” one player said, “there is a possibility that we someday may end up 160 all out or 200 all out. But is the board is ready to give us that room to be fearless? Because without the support and backing from the board and management adapting to this modernity won’t be possible.”Double (fitness) standards
One of the points made by a senior player in the side was about the management compromising on fitness standards with certain players, having earlier said there would be no compromise. The examples of Azam Khan and Sharjeel Khan were used in this case, the player saying that the entire team had worked hard to adhere to certain strict standards, and that it was a prerequisite for domestic and national selection, and yet these two were picked while adhering to a different standard. This had created uncertainty and doubt in the dressing room about the messaging coming through on fitness.A foreign coach or a local one?
One of the points raised by the players was the attitude of local coaches and in particular how “judgemental” they are. The players carry a constant sense that a local coach will use their weaknesses against them rather than working with them to rectify it. The communication with coaches about that problem then becomes a reason for players to be axed, according to one player, which further inhibits talking to them about it.Handing media pressure
The inability of the board and team management to handle media pressure, one player said, was a source of insecurity within the team, and that this media pressure largely drives selection. He said the pressure felt by the team management often gets transferred down to the players.
