Man Utd could land the next Fernandes in "unstoppable" £60m gem

While the season is merely at its mid-point, there is a semblance that the campaign is already over for Manchester United, with manager Erik ten Hag in need of a lengthy FA Cup run in what is now the club's last realistic hope of securing silverware in 2023/24.

The return of the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro from injury could well give the Red Devils the lift that they are craving, although with much of the damage having already been done – including the early exit from Europe – the focus will be beginning to shift toward possible improvements that could be made this summer.

Man Utd could replace Casemiro with “one of South America’s biggest jewels”

Erik ten Hag could look to improve his midfield this January by signing an exciting prospect.

There will no doubt be a desire to see a change in tact in the transfer window amid the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, with the INEOS chief already seemingly setting his sights on potential new recruits ahead of next season.

Man Utd transfer news

As per a report from the Standard earlier this week, Ratcliffe is believed to be eyeing a move for Crystal Palace starlet, Michael Olise, as was one of his first signings at Old Trafford, with the wing wizard potentially set to be part of a 'squad overhaul' at the club this summer.

The report suggests that the France U21 international has a release clause as part of his current deal that comes into effect this summer, although having signed a new contract back in August, that figure is likely to be beyond his prior £35m get-out clause.

As per Football Transfers, the belief is that the 22-year-old could command a fee of around £60m, albeit with the possible interest of rivals Arsenal likely to prove something of an obstacle, with the player himself said to favour a move to the Emirates.

Even so, if United can persuade the former Reading man to join Ten Hag's ranks, they could well have their next Bruno Fernandes on their hands.

How Michael Olise compares to Bruno Fernandes

Described as "one of the best wide playmakers in Europe" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Olise has enjoyed a promising campaign thus far at Selhurst Park, with five goals and one assist to his name in just nine Premier League outings.

While injuries have been an issue for the London-born talent, when he is at his best he is seemingly "unstoppable" – according to pundit Darren Bent – having formed a delightful partnership with Eberechi Eze in south London.

An undoubted "joy to watch", in the words of Kulig, the £100k-per-week sensation would certainly be a real statement addition for the Red Devils, particularly due to his stylistic and statistical similarities to Fernandes, as noted by FBref.

That likeness to the United skipper – who also has six goal involvements in the league this season – can be seen by their creative influence for their respective sides, with Olise ranking in the top 10% among his European peers for shot-creating actions and the top 16% for assists per 90, with Fernandes, meanwhile, ranking in the top 3% and the top 21% for those same two metrics, respectively.

While typically deployed on the flanks, the Palace gem can also mirror his Portuguese counterpart in operating in an attacking midfield berth, boasting the defensive prowess needed to thrive in that role as he ranks in the top 15% for tackles made per 90 – Fernandes is just ahead as he ranks in the top 11%.

Although Olise may not yet be at the levels of the former Sporting CP ace – who tops the division for chances created – he is on the right path to be able to emulate him, showcased by the fact that he has created four 'big chances' and averaged 2.2 key passes per game this term. That is not far off Fernandes' return of nine 'big chances' created and an average of 2.9 key passes per game.

The latter man remains the undoubted talisman at the Theatre of Dreams at present, although with few options to compete with or potentially replace the 29-year-old when needed, snapping up a youthful, dynamic talent like Olise may prove essential this summer.

Ange could sign a bigger talent than VDV with Spurs bid for £60m "tank"

Tottenham Hotspur supporters may be forgiven for feeling somewhat aggrieved after the events of recent weeks halted Ange Postecoglou's revolution in London.

While injuries and suspensions are simply part and parcel on the pitch, Spurs had built something special in the early weeks of the 2023/24 campaign and topped the Premier League table after ten matches, but a three-match skid has laid the squad's frailties bare.

Spurs could unleash 18 y/o "big talent" to fill Bentancur void

The stricken Lilywhites have been hit with an alarming number of injuries over recent weeks.

At this stage, it's not detrimental, with signs that Spurs could yet rekindle their verve over the winter period. That being said, the forthcoming football will need to be contested with absences to key stars: James Maddison and Micky van de Ven are ruled out until the new year, Cristian Romero is still suspended for Sunday's fixture against Manchester City, Rodrigo Bentancur is injured again and not expected back for several months.

As is clear, there's much to contend with for Postecoglou, and while his primary focus will be on navigating through the winter games to come, he will have one eye firmly fixed on the January transfer window, with defensive reinforcements paramount.

Tottenham transfer news – Marc Guehi

According to a report from 90min, Spurs are among the Premier League heavyweights to be tracking Crystal Palace's star centre-back Marc Guehi, with Chelsea Manchester United and Newcastle United all interested.

While it's understood that Chelsea are leading the race right now and keen on a reunion after selling him to the Eagles for £18m in 2020, Spurs' desperation in pursuit of new options could make for a compelling transfer battle.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

On their part, Palace are determined to reject any winter proposals for the England international – who would be happy to remain in south London as he fights for a place in Gareth Southgate's 2024 European Championship squad – and have slapped a £60m price tag on his signature.

Marc Guehi's style of play

It's probably fair to say that Spurs supporters won't be overly fussed with who's brought in to bolster the ranks so long as their style aligns and buttresses Postecoglou's lofty ambitions.

But in Guehi, the Lilywhites would land a truly remarkable talent and one who could improve the squad as it looks to return to European competition under Postecoglou's wing, fighting to end the lengthy trophy drought.

A composed and intelligent player, Guehi has started 12 times in the Premier League this season, completing 89% of his passes, averaging 1.2 tackles, one interception, 4.8 clearances and 5.3 ball recoveries per game, also completing 100% of his dribbles and 67% of his ground duels, as per Sofascore.

He also ranks among the top 14% of central defenders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref,

The nine-cap England star occupies the left slot in the central defence, which only strengthens the notion that Tottenham would be wise to secure his services, with the left-footed Van de Ven indeed sidelined indefinitely.

How Guehi would fit in at Tottenham

The £50k-per-week titan will have no regrets regarding his transfer to Selhurst Park several years ago, having now chalked up 96 appearances for Palace, scoring five goals.

He's been hailed as an "absolute tank" by former England under-21 teammate Josef Bursik and has earned the vested attention of some of England's top outfits after his sustained showings – with 90min's piece also noting Bayern Munich's interest.

While Palace have endured a mediocre campaign in the Premier League so far, Guehi has kept four clean sheets from 12 matches and there is a sense that he would take an exciting step in his development with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The table portrays Guehi's style with a notable semblance to the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle United's defenders, which is interesting and underscores Guehi's formidable presence in the Premier League, boasting the tough, technical qualities to allow him to thrive in his homeland for many years to come.

When fully fit, Tottenham boast one of the division's meanest partnerships in Van de Ven and Romero, but with the untrusted Eric Dier out of contract at the end of the season, Guehi would be an excellent acquisition.

The 5 foot 11 ace could even surpass Van de Ven, with the Dutchman signing for Spurs from German side Wolfsburg for £43m in the summer and revolutionising the backline, having been described as "out of this world" by pundit Jamie Carragher.

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven

One of Europe's most athletic and energetic centre-halfs, Van de Ven ranks among the top 11% of positional peers for pass completion, the top 8% for progressive carries and the top 3% for successful take-ons per 90, showcasing such faculties.

But with Guehi performing at such an impressive level with Palace, he could even be eclipsed by the Englishman, who is wanted by all of the league's big guns.

In fairness, Van de Ven has been extraordinary since his summer introduction and has completed 95% of his passes, won 61% of his duels and averaged 1.6 tackles, 2.9 clearances and 5.4 ball recoveries per match.

Described as a “beast" at the back by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Palace's goal-stopping specialist really does fit the bill, offering a foil to serve on the left side of the defence in Van de Ven's absence while providing the more traditional style of defending, which would complement Spurs well given Romero's aggressive, tough-tackling proclivities.

Likened to phenom's such as Sven Botman, the sky is the limit for the 23-year-old, and Postecoglou must ensure that Chelsea and Manchester United do not get their mitts on his signature; adding him to the fold, Tottenham's resurgence would only gain steam.

Akila Dananjaya found to have illegal bowling action

The offspinner stands suspended from bowling in international cricket, but, with the consent of SLC, he can still bowl in Sri Lanka’s domestic competitions

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Dec-2018Sri Lanka spinner Akila Dananjaya has been suspended from bowling in international cricket after failing an independent biomechanics assessment in Brisbane. He may, however, bowl in Sri Lanka’s domestic competitions, with SLC’s consent. The news is a major blow to Sri Lanka ahead of next year’s World Cup. Dananjaya had been the most consistent bowler in Sri Lanka’s ODI ranks over the past year, and had begun to have success in the Test format as well. Dananjaya is likely to undergo remedial work over the next few months, but it is as yet unclear when he may be able to undergo the biomechanics test again, with a view to being cleared for international cricket. As such, the Sri Lanka selectors and coach Chandika Hathurusingha may have to begin looking at other options for a lead spinner.Dananjaya had been reported for a suspect action following Sri Lanka’s first Test against England in Galle last month. Of the three main deliveries he bowls, it is understood to be his offbreak – the stock ball – that was found to be breaching the 15-degree limit for elbow flexion.Even if Dananjaya does undergo remedial work and gets himself cleared to bowl at the top level, there is no guarantee he will be as effective a bowler. Sri Lanka offspinner Sachithra Senanayake had returned to the international fold with a re-worked action late in 2014, after earlier failing a biomechanics test, and was unable to replicate the success of his early career. Tharindu Kaushal, another Sri Lanka offspinner, also had his doosra banned in 2015, and has since been unable to flourish in top flight cricket.Dananjaya has 28 ODI wickets at an average of 23 this year. In Tests, he has 27 wickets at 24.25.

The "special" Liverpool star who should start over Szoboszlai

Liverpool can go one step closer to reaching the knockout stages of the Europa League this evening with victory over LASK.

As it stands, the Reds need four points from their remaining two matches to guarantee their passage into the round of 16, however, if Union Saint-Galloise manage to grab all three points against Toulouse, their qualification will be confirmed on matchday five.

Whilst the Thursday night jaunts to rogue destinations have supplied Jurgen Klopp with a busy fixture schedule, it has allowed him to heavily rotate his squad and keep competition for places strong.

The German tactician is expected to make wholesale changes once more to the side that salvaged a draw against Manchester City with Harvey Elliott looking poised to replace Dominik Szoboszlai, who has featured off the bench in all three appearances in the competition.

Dominik Szoboszlai's season in numbers

Liverpool's midfield needed an overhaul after looking devoid of energy and dynamism last term, but since Szoboszlai arrived at the club, he's provided Klopp with those attributes and more.

The Hungarian superstar has impressed across so many aspects, from his ball retention to his press resistance and ability to drive forward, possessing every ingredient in his locker to become a world-class midfielder.

Hailed as "incredible" by Liverpool legend John Barnes while drawing comparisons to Steven Gerrard, such praise has been directed towards the youngster because he can do everything on the pitch and that has been reflected across an array of his attacking and defensive metrics this term.

Szoboszlai's importance to the squad shouldn't be understated, as showcased by the table above, with the 22-year-old supplying the third most key passes in the Liverpool squad (2.2), second most big chances created (5) and the most fouls drawn in the box.

Much like Mohamed Salah, however, his minutes are restricted in this competition and that is a blessing to Elliott, who should get his chance to impress Klopp once more this evening.

Why Elliott should start against LASK

If competition for places in Liverpool's midfield wasn't so high, Elliott would be starting every week and that is a testament to how good he is.

At 20 years old, Elliott is maturing into a sensational footballer and although his performances warrant more first-team action in the Premier League, he's used the Europa League as an opportunity to showcase his talents.

Dubbed by Jamie Carragher as "special", the fleet-footed midfielder has thrived in the pocket of space in the right channel, slaloming in between defenders with his exceptional ball control and low centre of gravity.

Harvey Elliott.

Across four matches in the competition, he's completed a whopping 75% of his dribbles, which underscores how difficult he is to tackle when the ball is stuck to his foot like glue.

Whilst he is adept at gliding past his opponents, Elliott is also a menace out of possession, utilising his boundless energy to make two tackles, win possession 1.5 times and recover six balls per game.

If the Europa League is a stage, the England under-21 star – who scored twice in the 3-0 victory over Northern Ireland – has certainly performed with Reds bracing themselves for another exceptional display from the talented youngster this evening.

Short smashes 257 with record 23 sixes in WA's fourth straight win

Short came within 11 runs of the highest individual List A score, scoring 198 runs only in boundaries in Western Australia’s fourth straight win

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Sep-20181:08

D’Arcy Short registers third-highest List A score

D’Arcy Short came within 11 runs of the highest individual List A score, plundering 257 off 148 balls aided by a record 23 sixes, the most in an innings. His knock, the highest one-day score by an Australian, led Western Australia to a 116-run win against Queensland in the JLT One-Day Cup at the Hurstville Oval in Sydney. Short overtook Shikhar Dhawan to register the third-highest List A score, behind Ali Brown’s 268 and Rohit Sharma’s 264.Queensland had a flying start in their chase and needed 143 runs in the last 15 overs with seven wickets in hand, but the middle and lower order could not build on opener Sam Heazlett’s century (107).Once Queensland opted to bowl, Short was the only Western Australia batsman to cross 30, as wickets tumbled at the other end. He walked out to bat at 1 for 19, which was soon 2 for 23, before he stitched fifty partnerships with captain Ashton Turner, Marcus Stoinis and Hilton Cartwright. The biggest stand of the match was for the seventh wicket, of 109 runs between Short and Mathew Kelly, that catapulted them to 338 in the 43 over. Short was in such flow, he reached all his milestones of 100, 150, 200 and 250 with sixes, and 200 and 250 with three consecutive sixes against Charlie Hemphrey and Luke Feldman respectively. His knock was only the fourth score of 200 or more by an Australian, in addition to Ben Dunk’s unbeaten 229, Phillip Hughes’ unbeaten 202 and Travid Head’s 202 – incidentally all left-handers.He was particularly severe on legspinner Mitchell Swepson, who conceded 97 runs in eight overs. A shattered window on the ground epitomised the impact of Short’s unbridled assault, which only included four fours and a six till the 20th over. But by the time he was stumped in the 46th over, he had racked up 15 fours and 23 sixes – equalling Colin Munro’s sixes total in a first-class match – in all, for a combined 198 runs.Western Australia lasted only 10 more deliveries once he was dismissed, for 387, the sixth-highest total in Australia’s domestic one-day competitions. Feldman was the only bowler to end with an economy rate of under six per over, taking 2 for 59 in his 10 overs.Queensland’s chase was also helped by Chris Lynn’s 48-ball 58 till the 21st over. But once Lynn, Hemphrey (46) and Heazlett were dismissed by the 34th over, Queensland were wrapped up in another 56 deliveries for only 33 runs. Andrew Tye ran through the line-up, first removing Lynn and then the last five wickets, finishing with career-best figures of 6 for 46. The win was Western Australia’s fourth on the bounce this season to continue their unbeaten run.

    WHAT GRESSEL SAID

Messi sat out Inter Miami’s latest MLS fixture through injury, but they were still able to claim a 3-1 victory away at D.C. United. USMNT star Gressel told reporters after that game: “This was a big one. Short rest, tough week, tough two weeks. Not an easy game, obviously, midweek and then to have to travel on a short rest in this league is not easy. And to come here after going down 1-0 as well, and being able to fight back and ultimately play really well, I thought, after the first 15-20 minutes, to come away with the win and get the three points without Leo is something that I think we can take a lot from.

"There's going to be stretches where there’s guys at national teams, where we play through those moments, where Olympics are coming up, Copa America – those types of things where we know or we've known that we have to rely on the whole squad.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Campana, who was on target in the win over D.C. United that also saw Luis Suarez bag a brace, added on the need for others to step up in Messi’s absence: “We know how important Leo is to the team, what he is and what he represents within us. We probably really can't count on him all the time and we will have to take charge. Lucho [Suarez] is obviously a high-ranking player, as seen in the games he’s started in the league – scoring goals, enjoying what he knew how to do best. It makes me happy to see him score and enjoy himself here with Messi, with his friends and to know that he is happy.”

WHAT NEXT FOR MESSI & INTER MIAMI?

Inter Miami sit top of the MLS Eastern Conference, with 10 points taken from five games, and will be hoping to nurse Messi back to full health ahead of back-to-back meetings with rivals from New York – with the South American superstar not expected to link up with his country for international duty.

Aston Villa news: Emery now wants to reignite pursuit for "top defender"

Aston Villa are continuing to be proactive in the transfer market looking ahead to 2024, and boss Unai Emery is now keen to reignite his interest in an experienced defender he failed to sign this summer, according to reports.

Aston Villa international break news…

In conversation with GIVEMESPORT, journalist Dean Jones believes that Youri Tielemans will be frustrated with his lack of game time at Villa Park this campaign, stating: "Villa are having a good season so far, and it's impacting him personally. It's frustrating for him, with the Euros coming up at the end of this season. If you were looking from an outside point of view, and you look at what's happened to Tielemans’ career over the past couple of seasons, you might say it's going backwards because of his game time and the influence he's having over games."

Last weekend, Aston Villa recorded a point on the road away to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux in a 1-1 stalemate, and pundit Alan Shearer has claimed on Match of the Day 2 via Birmingham Live that the Villans should've had a penalty for Matt Doherty's challenge on Ollie Watkins.

Shearer explained: "If he doesn't shove him, he's getting a clear shot at goal. Clearly he shoves him, enough for him to be off balance there. That's why he misses the target as he does. For me, that should have been a penalty."

Of course, the big recent news coming out of Aston Villa is that striker Watkins has signed a new contract at Villa Park that will tie him to the West Midlands-based side until the summer of 2028.

Speaking to the Villans' official website, Watkins signalled that he is excited to be part of future plans at the club, as he said: "I’m really happy. I feel like this is the best place for me to play my football; I’ve still got a lot to achieve here. I feel like I’ve had a really good connection with the fans since I’ve come here. From day one they’ve been really good with me; we’ve had highs and lows but that’s football. You can see the direction of the club, and I want to be a part of that."

Aston Villa transfer news – Marcos Acuna

According to a recent transfer update on Sevilla's Marcos Acuna, Aston Villa are keen to reignite their pursuit of the Argentinian full-back and are inclined to try again to bring him to Villa Park in January.

The report doesn't specify the type of fee it would take to acquire Acuna; however, Aston Villa boss Emery is familiar with his presence from his time in La Liga and could now enact an ambitious swoop after coming close to securing his services in the summer transfer window, with Sevilla willing to part ways with the veteran defender in the New Year.

Sevilla defender Marcos Acuna.

Acuna, who was labelled a "top defender" by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, has made 135 appearances for Sevilla across all competitions, registering five goals and 13 assists (Acuna's statistics – Transfermarkt).

Now, it seems like Aston Villa boss Emery is determined to try and tempt Acuna to swap the sunny shores of Andalusia for a shot at the English top flight.

Celtic: Reporter shares Jota transfer update

Reliable reporter Mark Hendry has shared what he’s heard out of Celtic following rumours of a potential move to bring Jota back to Parkhead.

Is Jota returning to Celtic?

The Hoops enjoyed a productive transfer window over the summer under new manager Brendan Rodgers. The club managed to bring in 10 new players at a total cost of just under £20m and still brought in a healthy profit due to Jota’s big-money move to Saudi Arabia.

The 24-year-old moved to Al Ittihad in a deal worth £25m, however, things haven’t quite gone to plan, with Jota making just five appearances so far. Al Ittihad also brought in nine overseas players but are only able to register eight, resulting in Jota being the man left out and only able to feature in AFC Champions League and Club World Cup games.

It was even claimed that Jota requested for his contract to be terminated but saw that rejected, with Tottenham one club to be linked with a move. Celtic have also been rumoured over making a potential swoop, with pundit Frank McAvennie recently saying:

“Someone told me Jota is coming back in January.

“It would be nice to have him back because you know what you are getting with him but I do think Brendan will need to sit down with the powers that be and tell them that he needs to sign some players.”

However, Hendry shared an update for Football Scotland regarding the Hoops and Jota in the last 48 hours. The reliable reporter stated that ‘sources have confirmed’ that no movement or approach has been made to bring Jota back to Glasgow in what ‘would be a major swoop’, with the club not considering a transfer.

Celtic'sJotareacts

Who did Celtic sign this summer?

It doesn’t look as if Jota will return to Scotland, however, as mentioned, Celtic have a number of new players thanks to the Portuguese attacker’s sale.

Maik Nawrocki, Luis Palma, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Odin Thiago Holm, Hyun-jun Yang, Marco Tilio, Hyeok-kyu Kwon and Tomoki Iwata all penned permanent Parkhead deals, whereas Nat Phillips and Paulo Bernardo joined on loan from Liverpool and Benfica respectively.

Palma, Yang and Tilio are naturally wingers, so Celtic aren’t exactly short of options despite the loss of Jota, with Daizen Maeda, James Forrest, Mikey Johnston and the injured Liel Abada also on the books.

Bringing back a player of Jota’s quality could have been nice for Rodgers, especially if it was for a cut-price fee, however, the Northern Irishman will have to work with what he has until the New Year, recently hinting that he wanted one or two more additions over the summer.

"We work with the players who are here. I’m not saying that in any disrespectful way. I think every manager will tell you they maybe wish they could have done one or two more signings but the window closed, we had the players we had and we will work with the best players at our disposal to make our performance level as best as it can be."
