'He wasn't the only one who struggled' – Stephen Fleming on MS Dhoni's sluggish batting

Coach says CSK’s slowdown was due to the challenging conditions, “not lack of intent”

Chopra: ‘Dhoni could’ve showed a bit more intent’

Chennai Super Kings, in their three-wicket defeat to Delhi Capitals, got to 48 for 2 by the end of the powerplay, but then slowed down so much towards the middle that they did not score a single boundary for the next five overs. Ambati Rayudu eventually broke free at the death to end with an unbeaten 55 off 43 balls, but MS Dhoni could not make up for lost time: he dawdled to 18 off 27 balls before edging behind, having hit zero boundaries. This slowdown was not down to lack of intent, coach Stephen Fleming said after the game, pointing out that Dhoni wasn’t the only batter who struggled to get the ball away on a challenging Dubai pitch.”Well, he [Dhoni] wasn’t the only one who struggled,” Fleming said. “It was a difficult day for strokeplay. When 137 [136] is almost enough, I think it was a tough wicket to score big on in terms of the big shots. So both teams struggled with that towards the end of the innings. Sometimes you set your sights too high, [want] too many, and probably we were only 10-15 runs short of having a match-winning score.Watch the IPL on ESPN+

“So, the difficulty at the moment is to assess what the conditions are in all three different grounds and, batting first, getting a score that is par or just above. It was no lack of intent, it was just we had to stabilise after a couple of mistakes and then we were reasonably well-placed for 150. The other thing was their attack bowled very well in the last five overs. They were very smart, so it was tough going. The result might still have gone Super Kings’ way had substitute K Gowtham hung on to a fairly straightforward chance offered by Shimron Hetmyer at long-on, in the 18th over bowled by Dwayne Bravo. The ball burst through Gowtham’s hands and rolled to the boundary, leaving Capitals needing 18 off 15 balls. Hetmyer went on to usher Capitals home – and to the top spot on the table. Fleming rued his team’s “clumsy mistakes”, but said he would rather face these setbacks now than during the playoffs.”I’d rather have two defeats [Super Kings lost their previous game as well, to Rajasthan Royals] now than in the two semi-finals, if I ever had a wish list,” he said. “Today was good, today was scrappy and I think there were a lot of mistakes on both sides. Sometimes, when you’ve qualified, I know there are one or two [things] that we were trying hard for… and things do change a little bit.”We try to work very hard on keeping the intensity. We’re on the back of three games in five days and a bit of travel, so there were probably clumsy mistakes from us, which was the most disappointing aspect, but in terms of the competition one of the key things is rebounding. Second on the table [with] a chance to get to the top two is still a positive position, but we need to just maintain our intensity or get the flow and rhythm that we had before these two games.”Related

Report – Axar, Hetmyer key drivers in tight win for Capitals

In the previous game he played, against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Bravo came into the attack as early as the seventh over and took 2 for 17 in his four overs, including the prized scalp of Kane Williamson. However, on Monday, that 18th over turned out to be Bravo’s first. Fleming reasoned that Bravo’s particular strengths and the two-paced Dubai track prompted this late introduction.”The pitch was very difficult when the taller fast bowlers hit the back of a length hard,” Fleming said. “There was inconsistency there. Dwayne Bravo is not really a player who bangs the ball into the pitch. His death yorkers and changes of pace are his key weapons. When there are other resources that are making in-ways and creating opportunity, brought us back into the game… Dwayne’s death [bowling] is very effective. I thought the tactics were spot on. Throughout the game the faster bowlers banging it on a back of a length had a good day out. That was our tactic and we did we did it really well.”

"Terrible", "Fatal" – Pundits slam £195k-a-week Man Utd star on int’l duty

The international break was an opportunity for Manchester United players to turn their form around, and some of them have, although one came in for criticism.

It has been a frustrating start to the new season for the Red Devils and Erik ten Hag, as the club got off to a winning start against Fulham, but since then have suffered two defeats, putting pressure on them on the eve of the league returning.

Man Utd players on international duty

Like many Premier League clubs, Manchester United have had a lot of players away representing their countries during these last two weeks. It has been an opportunity for them to get away from club football and get back into form with their countries.

The Red Devils have seen four of their five summer signings go away on international duty, with Joshua Zirkzee impressing with the Netherlands as he netted in their 5-2 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte has also impressed once again while playing for Uruguay, as he completed 78 minutes and 90 minutes in the two outings. As well as these two players impressing, Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes also done well while on duty with Portugal, as the pair both got on the scoresheet, as it was two wins from two.

Man United have seen many of their other international players excel while on duty, even seeing academy player James Scanlon, who is yet to make his debut for the club, score for Gibraltar and now is just five goals away from their all-time leading goalscorer. But it wasn’t all plain sailing for United’s international players, as one in particular didn't have a great time.

Pundits slam Man United defender De Ligt after Netherlands error

Netherlands and Manchester United defender Matthijs De Ligt was slammed for his performance on Tuesday night against Germany, with the international making a mistake that cost his country the win.

De Ligt started in the Netherlands’ game against Bosnia & Herzegovina, and despite them winning 5-2, the Dutch centre-back did make an unfortunate mistake to make the game a nervy ending. He retained his place in the starting XI against Germany on Tuesday, but once again he made a mistake and was pulled off at half-time, and now there is speculation that his international career may be in jeopardy for the time being.

Pundit Pierre van Hooijdonk for NOS said on De Ligt’s performance: “He had a similar moment in the beginning, where he actually loses the ball in a simple way by means of a pass. And then it happens a second time. That is terrible for De Ligt.

“Ultimately, top sport is very tough, and then it’s over. We all think De Ligt is a great player, but how often has this happened to the Dutch national team? And at almost all crucial moments. At some point, it stops, especially when you have competitors who are of a high level.”

Meanwhile, Rafael van de Vaart’s three-word response to the analyst was: “This is fatal.”

De Light, who is said to be on a weekly wage of £195,000 at Old Trafford, has been capped 46 times by the Netherlands, and he will be hoping he can come back to United and play as best he can between now and the next international break, so he can retain his place in the squad.

Tottenham now offered club’s £25 million Player of the Year with Solanke

Tottenham Hotspur have been offered the chance to sign one club's 2024 Player of the Year, amid their advanced talks over a deal for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

Tottenham now in advanced talks to sign Solanke from Bournemouth

This morning, a flurry of reports from reliable media sources shared news that Spurs are now in advanced talks to sign Solanke, with manager Ange Postecoglou now closing in on his desired striker signing.

Alasdair Gold of football.london claims the 26-year-old, who scored 21 goals in all competitions for Bournemouth last season, has shown a "big desire" to play for the club and this will be a real plus-point for Postecoglou.

David Ornstein, meanwhile, echoes Gold's claim by stating that Solanke is "desperate" to finalise a move to north London, with talks ongoing as Bournemouth agree to sell their talisman for a club-record fee.

Solanke's contract contains a £65 million release clause which is only valid for the Premier League top six, and according to GiveMeSport reporter Ben Jacobs, the Cherries are determined to hold for a fee as close to that figure as possible.

If talks fall through for the Englishman, it is believed Brentford striker Ivan Toney is seen as a concrete alternative Spurs option to Solanke.

"Tottenham now in advanced talks with Bournemouth over a club-record move for Dominic Solanke," wrote Jacobs on X.

"Solanke has a £65m release clause in his contract and Bournemouth determined to hold out for as close to that figure as possible. Spurs hopeful of coming to an agreement with negotiations ongoing. As @talkSPORT reported on Thursday, Tottenham also have a concrete interest in Brentford's Ivan Toney should a deal for Solanke not be finalised."

With Solanke very keen on the move, it will be totally down to the clubs to find middle ground in negotiations. Meanwhile, reliable Tottenham insider Paul O'Keefe has claimed that the Lilywhites have been approached about signing another player amid these talks.

Tottenham offered Celtic's 2024 Player of the Year Matt O'Riley

Celtic star Matt O'Riley, who scored 18 goals and registered 13 assists in 37 SPFL starts for the eventual Scottish champions last season, also bagged their 2024 Player of the Year award.

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

The Hoops value him at around £25 million, according to reports, and it is believed his camp are trying to get him a move down south. O'Keefe writes this week that Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign O'Riley from Celtic by intermediaries, but as things stand, they're unlikely to take the bait.

Called "top-class" and a joy to watch by Rangers legend Kris Boyd, the Denmark international is attracting serious interest from Brighton, who have apparently opened talks (Daily Mail), so there could be an alternative Premier League landing spot for O'Riley.

Reliable journalist: Newcastle preparing near £30m bid for "brilliant" ace

Newcastle United are ready to make a new and improved offer for a "brilliant" transfer target, according to a key update from reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

Newcastle transfer news

Eddie Howe continues to eye up fresh faces in the summer transfer window, with Mainz attacking midfielder Brajan Gruda seen as a key target. He is a player who could dovetail beautifully with Anthony Gordon next season, assuming the Magpies are able to stave off interest in the England winger from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

Newcastle are also believed to have made contact with Torino and Italy centre-back Alessandro Buongiorno over a summer switch to St James' Park, with the 25-year-old having the same agent as Sandro Tonali, although he looks to be nearing a move to Napoli instead.

Alessandro Buongiorno

Exciting young Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva is seen as a standout option to bolster the defensive depth at Howe's disposal, too, as he looks to fill the void left by long-term injury victims Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles. The Portugal international appeared twice for his country at Euro 2024, prior to their exit at the hands of France, and could cost as much as £85m.

Barcelona ace Ronald Araujo has also emerged as an option at the heart of the defence, with the Uruguayan demanding a higher salary than the £114,000-a-week wages he is currently receiving at the Camp Nou. Newcastle and Manchester City are considered two clubs who could improve his earnings.

Newcastle to make new offer for "brilliant" player

According to Nixon on Patreon [via Give Me Sport], Newcastle are willing to make an improved offer for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, bidding closer to the £30m that the Clarets want for the 21-year-old's signature.

It could arrive in the coming weeks after an initial £16m effort was rebuffed, with the Magpies looking to sort out a long-term replacement for Nick Pope between the sticks, following an injury-plagued 2023/24 season for the 32-year-old.

Trafford really does seem to be Newcastle's priority choice in goal this summer, and it does now feel like a case of simply reaching an agreement that suits all parties. The Englishman may have had a tricky 2023/24 season at times, suffering relegation from the Premier League, but he is a player with such a high ceiling.

Ian Wright is one of many who have spoken of his admiration for him in the past: "He was brilliant, I was delighted for him. Coming into the Burnley side after a £19m move, Vincent Kompany has shown a lot of faith in him and he made some very, very good saves.

"A lot of the Burnley fans weren’t quite sure simply because of [Arijanet] Muric and how well he had done to come up, but he made some fantastic saves."

Newcastle hit gold on titan who's worth more than Gibbs-White & Madueke

The talent has excelled since his move to St James’ Park.

ByEthan Lamb Jul 6, 2024

Trafford arguably stands out as the most likely player to be England's long-term No.1 after Jordan Pickford, assuming he continues to grow as a player – he confidently believes that will be the case, too – and he could learn so much training alongside Pope every day, possibly usurping him in no time in the process.
