The Catalan giants have remained financially crippled for the past few seasons and are more than €1 billion in debt. They have been forced to activate 'financial levers' in the past that included selling off some of the club's assets.

Under such immense financial distress, the Blaugrana manager Xavi has asked for more time to bring success to the club and urged the fans to remain patient. After winning La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup in the 2022/23 season, the Catalan side will go trophyless in the current campaign.

WHAT XAVI SAID

Speaking to reporters, the 44-year-old said, "The Culé must understand that the situation is very complicated to compete economically. It has nothing to do with what we had 25 years ago when the coach would come and say ‘I want this one, this one, and this one’. It doesn’t work like that anymore.

"I understand that and that’s how we’re going to adjust to it. That doesn’t mean we’re not going to compete. We need stability and time. There are good things to compete for. The situation we are in is the situation we are in in terms of results. Last year we were solvent without playing the football we would like to play and this year, we have played better, but with worse results."

He added, "We are living the situation that the club has at an economic level to compete. We need to compete better. The season has slipped away from us because of details."

Arsenal could look to "magnificent" new target after he spoke with Arteta

Journalist Ryan Taylor suggested that Arsenal could look to a "magnificent" new target for midfield, coming after he was spotted in conversation with manager Mikel Arteta.

The midfielders already linked with Arsenal

Thomas Partey's injury problems have become a real concern for the Gunners who are chasing their first Premier League title in nearly 20 years, and it's now been widely reported that they want another body in the middle of the park.

The Ghanaian, when he returns to fitness, will also be off the represent his country at AFCON soon after the start of 2024 – so Arteta looks set to be short of bodies in midfield during a crucial period.

Arteta and Edu now identify "dangerous" star as "major" Arsenal target

He could replace two players in one important position.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 7, 2023

Mohamed Elneny and Jorginho's contracts also expire at the end of this season, making the need for another option all the more prevalent for Arsenal. Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz is rumoured to be a top target for Edu, the club's sporting director, but the Brazilian is a key player for Unai Emery and it could take a big bid to convince them to sell next month (Fabrizio Romano).

joao-palhinha-douglas-luiz-liverpool-opinion

Meanwhile, it has also been reported that Arsenal really admire Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha, but they'll face a similar problem to Luiz with his price tag. The Portuguese could cost as much as £80 million, and given he turns 29-years-old this year, there isn't much longevity on offer (Fabrizio Romano).

Therefore, Arsenal may be primed to look at other options, with Taylor of The Mirror now saying a new name could come into the fold.

Arsenal could target Fofana

According to his information, Arsenal could look to Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana as they seek to shore up their midfield. Sources close to the France international apparently indicate that his club would be prepared to sell in January, and partly because of this, Arsenal may end up targeting Fofana.

Arteta is also understood to be a big fan of the 24-year-old, and the pair have already been spotted in conversation after Arsenal played Monaco in an Emirates Cup clash earlier this year.

Fofana represents a viable, affordable and realistic option in the winter window, according to Taylor, so it will be interesting to see if the north Londoners opt for him. Called "magnificent" by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, Fofana has started 12 Ligue 1 matches this season and registered three assists – standing out as one of their top performers.

Former Monaco turned Rangers boss Philippe Clement, once speaking to beIN Sports (via Ligue 1), also praised the player's attitude and "very nice" personality.

"He's very nice! To annoy him, you have to do something really bad," said Clement.

"Even when things go badly, he always looks at the positives. Having the trust of a coach is always important for a player. When he arrived, he came to me and said: 'I don't want a player-coach relationship with you'. I think that was the case with a lot of players who had lost a bit of confidence."

Man Utd's Maya Le Tissier should be the heir to Lucy Bronze's right-back throne for the Lionesses – so why was she dropped from the England squad?

Sarina Wiegman's side are lacking depth in a few positions, and this particular problem was apparent in games with Sweden and Ireland in April

Lucy Bronze has been a stalwart for the Lionesses for over 10 years now. She's been the star of some of England's most memorable moments and a key component in the team's most successful era, which has resulted in a European Championship title and a World Cup final. But criticism of her performances is undoubtedly growing, and there is no obvious replacement for Sarina Wiegman to turn to.

Regardless of whether or not that scrutiny is justified, it has certainly highlighted the lack of competition England have for Bronze in her right-back role. For a long time, Maya Le Tissier has looked to be the heir to her throne. The versatile defender broke through as a teenager at Brighton and has been one of Manchester United's most impressive performers since making that step up the Women's Super League hierarchy back in 2022.

But despite her continued improvements, Le Tissier wasn't even in the squad this week to provide depth to yet another position – alongside left-back and, following Rachel Daly's retirement, centre-forward – that the Lionesses seriously lack options in.

  • Errors creeping in

The latest criticism of Bronze was sparked by a costly error at Wembley last Friday night, when she failed to check her shoulder and Barcelona team-mate Fridolina Rolfo was able to sneak in, undetected, to net a goal that gave Sweden a point in the opening round of 2025 Women's Euro qualifiers.

But the questions around her level have been lingering for at least the last 12 months. Part of that is because of the incredibly high standards she has set, with her having laid claim to being the best full-back in the game for a long time, but defensive lapses have started to creep in, most notably in last year's World Cup final but also in the Champions League final with Barcelona.

Of course, that's not to say Bronze is suddenly a terrible player. As well as providing huge experience and top level know-how, she can still be an asset for the Lionesses and the positives she brings to the table are why Wiegman continues to select her. But it is also because if the coach did want to take her out of the firing line, she is very limited when it comes to replacements.

  • Lack of options

In England's April squad, Wiegman's other options at right-back were Esme Morgan, Niamh Charles and Jess Carter. Morgan can play any position in the back line, but hasn't started a game for Manchester City since November, while her most recent start for England was actually in the heart of defence. Charles, naturally a winger or an attacking midfielder, has become the go-to left-back for Chelsea and, in turn, England, while Carter has primarily played as a centre-back for the Blues in recent times. None are obvious right-back options, then.

Meanwhile, Le Tissier, who can play on the right or in the centre, wasn't included in the 23 at all. "The competition in the back is really high, with Leah [Williamson] coming back and finding balance with players who can play as a full-back as well as players who can play centre-back, or to see what's necessary,” Wiegman explained. “What do we need maybe in a scenario when we want to sub? And then we came out that Maya lost the competition on her position."

  • Versatility: Blessing and a curse

The overriding issue for Wiegman appears to be that Le Tissier is a right-back in her thinking, but is exclusively playing as a centre-back at United. She revealed as much last May when explaining the 21-year-old's shock absence from her World Cup squad. “We see her more as a right-back," the coach said. "At club, she plays as a centre-back. She has had a very good season, but this is the choice we made."

Le Tissier came through as a central option but moved out to the right at Brighton during her third season at the club. "Her athleticism, her levels of fitness, I think really suit that role," manager Hope Powell explained, and she was right.

"Maya, as an 18-year-old, I don't feel like I'm playing with a kid,” Brighton defender Victoria Williams noted at the time. “I think she's kind of advanced beyond her years in terms of her positional awareness [and] the professional attitude she has. I think Brighton are very fortunate to have her and I personally believe she has a very promising career ahead of her at club and England level."

  • Standard bearer

It was a switch that went down well with Le Tissier, too. "I can see myself playing right-back," she told . "I've got the strength that a right-back needs and the manager has seen the strength that I can bring and can transfer well into that position, so she's trusted me and I've been playing there and I think I've been doing quite well."

She even noted Bronze as someone for her to learn from and actually surpass. "You need to look at the best players that play in those positions and try to use bits of their game and put it into your game. You always want to be better than them, so I want to be better than Lucy Bronze. I don't just want to be as good as Lucy Bronze."

Man Utd: Ten Hag’s "mystifying" dud was as bad as Amrabat vs Copenhagen

Manchester United breathed a collective sigh of relief after yesterday's Champions League result, the Red Devils finally getting their first win of Group A courtesy of a Harry Maguire header to overcome FC Copenhagen by a solitary goal in a 1-0 victory.

It ended up being a nervy and nail-biting finale at Old Trafford, especially when the Danish visitors were awarded a last-minute penalty kick.

Thankfully for Erik Ten Hag's men, Andre Onana's previous woes in goal for United didn't impact the former Ajax shot-stopper in this instance who confidently saved Jordan Larsson's spot-kick to silence his harshest critics and give the hosts a crucial three points.

Andre Onana

Maguire and Onana might have managed to pull off a night of redemption by playing pivotal roles in the narrow victory at the Theatre of Dreams, but one Red Devils player continues to have a nightmarish spell in a United strip – Antony having 38 touches all night for Ten Hag's men but continuing to be largely ineffective for his side when it matters.

How did Antony perform against Copenhagen?

Antony could well have stepped up to the mark in this one and spearheaded his side to a comprehensive victory instead of settling for his side hanging on, in the end, to get over the line via Onana's heroics, but the Brazilian was somewhat anonymous in yesterday evening's clash.

From the 63 minutes he was on the Old Trafford turf – replaced by Alejandro Garnacho who is pushing for a spot in Ten Hag's starting eleven more regularly – Antony only registered one shot all evening, an off-target attempt too that didn't threaten the Copenhagen goalkeeper with the game still in the balance at 0-0.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaks toAntony

The 23-year-old managed zero key passes from his hour or so on the pitch too, a passenger all evening when United needed their top talents to come into their own to easily fend off their Danish opponents and pick up a confidence-boosting win in Group A.

Compare that to Garnacho's contributions when he was substituted on for the underperforming dud, and Antony will be sweating about his immediate first-team future – the highly regarded Argentine winger hitting his only shot of the evening on target, saved brilliantly by Kamil Grabara in the visitors' net to the dismay of the 19-year-old.

It even led to Samuel Luckhurst, chief Man United writer for the Manchester Evening News, calling the £200k-per-week winger's individual game out.

He noted that it was "mystifying" that the Brazilian had even started this contest and he should be dropped for the Red Devils' next encounter in the Manchester Derby this coming Sunday, leaving Ten Hag with a selection dilemma.

The Dutch head coach could also look to ditch his Moroccan defensive midfielder, Sofyan Amrabat, for this crunch match against their arch-rivals and neighbours, with the on-loan maestro also poor alongside Antony.

How did Amrabat perform against Copenhagen?

Substituted off the pitch at half-time – Antony at least survived longer before being hauled off – the 27-year-old Fiorentina midfielder had a torrid 45 minutes.

Registering an impressive 7.40 Sofascore rating from his four Premier League games to date in a Man United shirt, he didn't play to those same standards against Copenhagen – leaving the pitch with a 6.7 rating overall.

Sofyan Amrabat

Much like Antony, he was a bystander to the action and didn't take the game by the scruff of the neck whatsoever – bailed out by a late Maguire header saving the contest.

Having lost possession five times, the Moroccan – who 'moved the ball around slowly and sloppily' according to GOAL's Richard Martin – failed to provide a brick wall-like cover to the defenders behind him.

Ten Hag therefore could freshen up his starting lineup when Man City make the short visit to Old Trafford for the contested Derby match this weekend, with both Antony and Amrabat underserving of another inclusion from the off.

Man Utd: Ten Hag could bench Rashford by starting £50k-p/w "game-changer"

Manchester United left it late to secure just their fourth Premier League victory of the season, scoring twice during injury time to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win.

Scott McTominay was the hero on the day at Old Trafford and Erik ten Hag certainly needed the three points in order to ease the pressure that has grown substantially in the previous few weeks.

The international break arrives at precisely the right time for the Dutchman to regroup his players and with their next fixture against Sheffield United, it represents a chance at securing another win.

It's safe to say there were a few underperformers against Brentford while some players haven’t quite replicated their form from last season, with Marcus Rashford being the prime example.

How has Marcus Rashford performed this season?

The Englishman emerged as United’s talisman during Ten Hag’s maiden campaign, registering 41 goal contributions – 30 goals and 11 assists – across all competitions as the Red Devils finished third in the Premier League and won the EFL Cup.

This form suggested he was ready to kick on and become United’s main source of goals this term, yet he hasn’t quite found the blistering form which saw him shine last season.

Marcus Rashford

Indeed, over ten matches so far, Rashford has scored just once while grabbing three assists and against Brentford he failed to score, register an assist or make a key pass during his time on the pitch.

The winger also lost possession 11 times and completed just 17 passes before being substituted for Alejandro Garnacho. Perhaps it is time to give the young Argentinian a decent run in the team to inspire some confidence, as he played well against the Bees during his short cameo.

How did Alejandro Garnacho perform vs Brentford?

The teenager has started only three matches this term but has registered one assist when unleashed in the starting XI and Ten Hag must now give him a proper chance following the international break.

The youngster was lauded as a “game-changer” by journalist Samuel Luckhurst at the start of the year, and he could certainly fulfil that role should he be unleashed against Sheffield United next week.

Alejandro Garnacho

The £50k-per-week gem managed to squeeze in one successful dribble, three key passes and one shot during his 27 minutes on the pitch after replacing Rashford, clearing showing an eagerness to create chances for others.

Garnacho managed to draw three fouls while also showcasing his physicality by winning four out of his six ground duels, indicating that he isn’t lightweight and is strong in one-on-one battles.

It was a promising display and one which could perhaps give Ten Hag a slight selection headache. The Blades are currently bottom of the table with just one point to their name this season, conceding 22 goals in the process.

Unleashing a talent like Garnacho against such a leaky backline could give him the freedom to utilise his attacking ability while giving Rashford somewhat of a breather. It would be incredibly bold to drop the 25-year-old but he's certainly in need of some competition in order to return to the kind of performances he displayed last season.

Leeds: "Powerful" Thorp Arch graduate could be Farke’s Rodon 2.0

Leeds United were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season and made the move to appoint Daniel Farke as their new head coach.

The German boss has been brought in to win promotion back to the big time at the first time of asking and has a proven track record of being able to get out of the Championship, with two title wins during his spell with Norwich City.

Farke's Championship title-winning seasons with Norwich (via Sky Sports):

He knows what it takes to make it up to the top-flight and has made a strong start to the current campaign with the club sitting fifth and in the play-off places after 11 matches.

One of the ex-Canaries coach's biggest strengths is his development and use of youth, as the 46-year-old tactician once stated that he likes to improve young players.

Charlie Cresswell is a player who could be the next ace to benefit from Farke's coaching as the talented youngster is a promising defender who could develop into being Joe Rodon 2.0 for the German boss.

Where did Cresswell start his career?

The centre-back has been with Leeds since the age of 11 in 2013 and has progressed his way through the ranks at Thorp Arch before making his way into the first-team squad.

He emerged as an option at U18 level during the 2018/19 campaign and played four FA Youth Cup matches in that term and the subsequent season combined, in which time the towering ace contributed with an impressive two goals and one assist.

Cresswell played his first game against a first-team outfit in the 2020/21 season as he lined up at centre-back for Leeds' U21 side against Blackpool in the EFL Trophy.

His team lost the game 3-0 but that did not stop him from producing an outstanding defensive display. As per Sofascore, the young ace made six clearances, seven tackles, and one block. He also won 14 of his 17 physical duels throughout the match as the English titan proved himself to be ready to deal with the physicality of the professional game.

Cresswell made 21 Premier League 2 appearances throughout the rest of that campaign and then went on to make his first-team debut the following year.

The Thorp Arch graduate played five Premier League matches during the 2021/22 season, with four of them coming under Marcelo Bielsa, and that included his debut as a starter against West Ham United.

His exposure to first-team football that term then led to his maiden loan away from Elland Road as the England U21 international completed a temporary switch to Millwall during the summer transfer window in 2022.

How did Cresswell perform for Millwall?

The £2.1k-per-week gem hit the ground running at the Den and enjoyed a terrific season as he proved himself to be capable of delivering quality performances on a consistent basis at Championship level.

Cresswell went on to play 28 league matches for Gary Rowett's side and caught the eye with his attacking impact and superb defensive contributions.

He made himself a huge threat from set-plays for Millwall and ended the campaign with four goals and two assists from a centre-back position.

Former Millwall loanee Charlie Cresswell.

As per FBRef, the Leeds loanee ranked within the top 7% of players in his position at Championship level for non-penalty goals per 90 and placed in the top 7% for xAG (Expected Assisted Goals) per 90.

Cresswell also made 2.8 tackles and interceptions per game along with a duel success rate of 60% over the course of the campaign in London.

His aerial dominance was on full display as the 6 foot 3 titan, whose heading ability was lauded as "powerful" by journalist Josh Bunting, ranked within the top 1% of his positional peers in the Championship for aerial battles won per 90 (5.77).

These statistics show that Cresswell has already proven himself to be an outstanding performer in the second tier in certain areas of the game, which is why he could be the long-term successor to Rodon at Elland Road.

How has Rodon performed this season?

The Wales international joined on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer and has had a mixed start to his career in Yorkshire.

Rodon has played eight times in the Championship and been solid for the majority of his time on the pitch, barring a red card for two bookable offences against Hull City back in September.

Leeds defender Joe Rodon.

The 25-year-old ace has made 2.4 tackles and interceptions per game and showcased his aerial dominance with a duel success rate of 69% in the air, as per Sofascore.

As a right-footed player, Rodon has lined up on the right of the central defensive partnership, mainly next to Pascal Struijk, and that is a role that would suit Cresswell, who also prefers to play on that side.

What's next for Cresswell?

The giant enforcer should not worry too much about his lack of minutes this season, with one league start so far, as Farke and the club placed their faith in him with a new four-year contract over the summer.

This suggests that the German head coach still sees a future for Cresswell at Elland Road but Rodon has been brought in to be the first-choice in the here-and-now.

The Leeds youngster now, who was once dubbed "impressive" by the aforementioned Bunting, has more time to develop and improve in order to get to a point where he is ready to start week-in-week-out for the Whites in that right-sided centre-back position.

Rodon's loan comes to an end next summer and Cresswell has until then to prove to Farke that he can be the manager's next version of the Welsh titan and replace him for the 2024/25.

His impressive statistics for Millwall suggest that the 21-year-old ace is on the right track and he must use his current lack of game time as fuel to push him further in training and when the head coach does give him an opportunity to prove himself on the pitch.

Jurgen Klopp defends Trent Alexander-Arnold's controversial 'means more' than Man City comments as Reds boss insists Pep Guardiola is 'better' manager than him

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The stage is set for a high-stakes encounter between Liverpool and Manchester City – a match that could significantly impact the Premier League title race. With the Reds holding a narrow one-point lead over City in the league table, Sunday's showdown promises to be a pivotal moment in the season.

However, tensions escalated in the lead-up to the match when Alexander-Arnold suggested that City had acquired their success through financial muscle-flexing and hence the titles won at Merseyside hold more value than at the Etihad. He emphasised the emotional attachment and significance of winning the title for Liverpool, claiming that it "means more" to his team.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Erling Haaland responded sharply to Alexander-Arnold's comments, asserting the importance of winning the treble and implying that the Liverpool full-back may not fully comprehend the feeling of such achievement as he has yet to win one. Despite the backlash, Klopp stood firmly by Alexander-Arnold, stating that he saw nothing wrong with his player's remarks. He further highlighted one of the club's slogans, "this means more," to emphasise the emotional connection and passion associated with representing Liverpool in the defence of his player.

  • WHAT KLOPP SAID

Speaking to reporters, Klopp said: "I had a few people telling me what I should say (laughs). I am not sure how often in this club that we have to say how much we respect City. Pep is the best manager in the world. They have incredible players. At the moment they have the best No 9, Haaland, who scores when he wants. Kevin De Bruyne will go down in history with players like Steven Gerrard! Phil Foden, the best English player at the moment. We all respect that.

"Trent respects that. But he is born in Liverpool, he stood on the bins [outside Melwood to watch players train as a kid]. What would you think in that situation? One of our slogans, that I love, is 'this means more'. It means more to us. This club is special to us. So if we feel it, why shouldn't we be allowed to say it? I am not really interested [in outside opinions]. It's just how he feels. How we feel and I have absolutely no problem about that. I just got told about it. I am pretty sure he showed total respect as well. In the last decade, Man City is the most successful team in English football and maybe Europe. It's ridiculous record they have. It means a lot for their people I am sure. We're still allowed to think what we want. But nothing wrong with what Trent said in my view."
