Ameen, Sandhu, Baig give Pakistan women historic series win

Sidra Ameen’s half-century and three-fors from Diana Baig and Nashra Sandhu led Pakistan to a four-wicket win against West Indies in the third ODI, giving the home team a historic 2-1 series victory – their first against West Indies. The win gave Pakistan two points, lifting them above West Indies to fourth place in the ICC Women’s Championship table. Pakistan now have 12 points, the same as India, but with a much inferior net run rate. West Indies remain on 11 points. The Pakistan bowlers continued their fine show from the second ODI, in which they had bowled out West Indies for 206. This time, the visitors managed only 159. Captain Stafanie Taylor opted to bat, scored 52, and even took 2 for 17, but her all-round show wasn’t enough to take West Indies through.Taylor had to walk out in the first over, Kycia Knight having been bowled by Baig off the third ball of the innings, and she stayed till the 37th over as wickets fell around her. West Indies were in a good position early on till Taylor and Deandra Dottin were batting together but Dottin’s aggressive 28 off 20 came to an end when she was run-out by Nida Dar in the eighth over.Shemaine Campbelle then joined Taylor for a 52-run stand as West Indies consolidated, but once Campbelle was caught behind off Sandhu, the innings stuttered. They slipped from 87 for 2 in the 20th over to 159 all out, losing their last eight wickets for only 72 runs. Only one other batsman – Afy Fletcher – reached double figures after that and she remained unbeaten on 21. The 21-year-old Sandhu built a stranglehold in the middle overs, taking 3 for 21 in ten overs. Baig returned to end Taylor’s 95-ball stay with a return catch, before adding one more wicket to end with 3 for 42 in eight overs. The trio of Sana Mir, Dar, and Kainat Imtiaz were also parsimonious, conceding at less than three runs per over each.Pakistan’s reply was steady, with opener Ameen’s second straight half-century guiding the chase early on. She shared useful stands with fellow opener Nahida Khan, Javeria Khan, and Dar, before falling for 52 off 107 in the 39th over. Ameen’s wicket induced a mini-wobble, as Pakistan went from 128 for 3 to 139 for 6 in the space of 22 balls, but the experienced Mir came in at No. 8 and guided the team home, hitting a boundary with the scores level to seal victory in 47.2 overs.Shakera Selman took 2 for 24 in ten overs while Taylor had a fruitful seven-over stint too. But the other bowlers couldn’t sustain the pressure as much to defend the sub-par total.

"Convinced" – Goalkeeper says Spurs have a "great talent" who’ll be a star

Italian goalkeeper Marco Silvestri has praised a "great talent" at Tottenham, and he suggests the youngster is just destined for the top.

Spurs surprise everybody with Premier League form

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has been a rip-roaring success since joining the club from Celtic in June, guiding them to top of the Premier League table at one point. Before their recent injury and suspension crisis, the north Londoners went on a very impressive 10-game unbeaten run, winning eight of them, with Postecoglou making the best start ever by a new boss in the division's history.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

All eyes are now on how they'll fare without key duo James Maddison and Micky van de Ven, who are both expected to be out until 2024. Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie are also out through suspension, dealing an almighty task for Postecoglou to get the very best out of Spurs with limited quality over the next few games.

The Lilywhites take on Aston Villa in four days, a tough encounter given the form of Unai Emery's side, while they couldn't ask for a more intimidating contest afterwards as league champions Man City await them at the Etihad.

The importance of Udogie

Missing Udogie is a real blow for Spurs alongside the other aforementioned stars, as his pace and dynamism down the left-hand side has proven to a major asset. Before his suspension, the Italy international had started 10 league matches, providing two assists whilst proving to be one of the success stories of Postecoglou's early tenure.

Destiny Udogie

“Udogie, I’m really staggered by how good he’s been," said The Athletic journalist James Maw in September ( View From The Lane as transcribed by TBR).

"To me, this is going to sound mad after four games, but he already looks like one of the better players in the Premier League.

“For a player in that position, we’ve seen Gareth Bale and this is a slightly lazy comparison given it’s based entirely on position, but we’ve seen a left-back go on to be one of the best footballers in world football over the course of like a five, six-year period. He will be a £100m player like that. Udogie, incredibly good, he’s only going to get better.”

Silvestri tips Udogie for the top

The 20-year-old youngster, upon his return, could even contend for the PFA Team of the Year if he carries on this sumptuous form. Silvestri, a former teammate of his at Udinese, explained exactly why that may be the case in an interview with Tribal Football this week. The 32-year-old goalkeeper heaped praise on Udogie and insists he's a "great talent".

Likes to dribble

Likes to play short passes

Likes to tackle

"I saw Udo make his debut when we played together in Verona. I have always considered him a great talent and a hard worker, in 4 years I have never heard him complain. I was convinced he would do very well straight away in the Premier League because he has all the characteristics but I believe he can continue to grow and become a top, top player."

Lloyd Pope embraces life changing time as Big Bash comes calling

He’s been compared to Shane Warne and has been talked up as the next big spin hope, but the 18-year old isn’t losing focus

Andrew McGlashan07-Nov-2018He’s been compared to Shane Warne and proclaimed a saviour of Australian cricket, all before his 19th birthday. But rather than being overawed by it all, legspinner Lloyd Pope is embracing his life-changing experiences as he turns heads with his leg-breaks and wrong ‘uns.Pope burst onto the global scene with his remarkable figures of 8 for 35 against England in the Under-19 World Cup quarter-final, pulling Australia back from the brink of elimination in a manner Warne would have been proud of. Then in just his second first-class match he claimed 7 for 87 against Queensland in the Sheffield Shield, becoming the youngest player to take a seven-wicket haul in the competition. On Wednesday, his first Big Bash contract was confirmed when he signed with Sydney Sixers. In the current climate of Australian cricket, where each day appears to bring another sacking, resignation or associated drama, Pope’s rapid rise has been enough for some to suggest that international cricket should come sooner rather than later. While he isn’t getting carried away, the spotlight certainly doesn’t sit uneasily for him.”It’s a different challenge, but I guess I like the media attention. Just trying to ride the wave at the moment. The attention is one thing I feel more off the field. When I’m out there I just sort of let cricket take over,” he said. “My dad’s told me that each time I take wickets ‘you’ve change your life today’ so it’s a really good feeling.”Pope’s father, Myles, has been a major influence on his early development, offering encouragement and advice while even as a young teenager coaches spotted that he may have some special – “a natural turner of the ball,” he was termed.”Think I was around 8-10 years old [when I started] and I’ve always just tried to jump in the nets and bowl as much as I can,” he said. “My dad’s been a big influence, just telling me to go out and bowl. A couple of coaches said I had natural talent, a natural turner of the ball one of them said and if I could continue with that I’d have a bright future.”Pope has had one session with Warne when he was younger – “amazing feeling to shake his hand, to know he knows who I am” – but stressed how he was keen to forge his own path, while absorbing all the advice he could. His sharply spun googly has been the delivery to really catch the eye and the aspect of his first dip into the BBL that he is excited about is the chance to have the license to go through a full range of variations.”I’ve had a bit of a red-ball focus recently with Shield cricket but it’s going really well, it will be nice to get the white ball back in my hands and try some more variations. There are different challenges, in red-ball cricket it’s a lot about consistency and in white-ball cricket it’s about a lot more variations and being able to out-think batters a lot more quickly.”And while talk of international honours will follow Pope around, especially if the wickets continue to come, he is keeping his feet on the ground. “I’ve only played three matches so I’m more worried about keeping my place in the Redbacks team, if I can do that I’ll be a very happy man.”

Albert has been criticised after it was noted that she allegedly liked and shared several anti-LGBTQ posts on social media. Ex-USWNT star Megan Rapinoe made a social media post aimed at Albert urging her to "wake up", and the 20-year-old ended up apologising, sharing a message that read: "I’m really disappointed in myself and am deeply sorry for the hurt that I have caused to my teammates."

USMNT legend and former Manchester City midfielder Mewis and NJ/NY Gotham FC forward Williams discussed the controversy on the Good Vibes FC podcast and have reiterated that there is no room for such discrimination in the game and said Albert still has much to do.

WHAT WILLIAMS & MEWIS SAID

Williams said: “I feel like if I’ve learned anything, it’s that there are some things that are just bigger than soccer. And one of them is human rights, and making sure that people feel safe in their body and just safe in this world. So I think it is a moment for us to say you know what, this topic is bigger than soccer.

“At the same time, women’s soccer has been a safe space for the LGBT community. And I think that it does affect the locker room a little bit. But again, I think this is bigger than the locker room.”

Mewis added: “Zooming out, making an apology is a solid first step. And I think you and I in many cases want to leave room for there to be growth and a change in behavior. But first and foremost, I don’t accept intolerance or the exclusion of people on a human level.”

Ben Stokes felt "under threat of immediate attack" moments before brawl

In a written statement read out in court, Stokes said he believed others involved in the fight had “demonstrated a willingness to use weapons in attacking people”

Ben Stokes felt “under threat of immediate attack” moments before he became involved in a brawl in Bristol, the jury at Bristol Crown Court has been told.Stokes, the England cricketer who is standing trial for affray alongside Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale, was also described as feeling “vulnerable and frightened” as the incident unfolded and claimed that, having seen at least one bottle used in the brawl, feared his opponents had “demonstrated a willingness to use weapons in attacking people.” As a result, he claims he “had a reasonable belief they may be carrying more weapons, perhaps of a more serious type.”In statements provided to the police in the aftermath of the incident and read to the court on the third day of the trial – the first time since the incident that Stokes’ version of events has been made public – he also claimed that two men (Kai Barry and William O’Connor), who he claims had been subjected to “nasty homophobic abuse” from Ali and Hale, thanked him for protecting them.Stokes claims that, not long after leaving the Mbargo nightclub in the early hours of the morning on September 25, a group of four men came to his attention as they appeared to be engaged in an argument.”As the group came to my attention, I heard some of what was being said,” Stokes said in the written statement. “Although I can’t remember anything specific now, I do recall that the language being used was homophobic in nature and was being directed at Kai and William by Ryan Hale and Ryan Ali.”Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale were taller and broader than Kai and William. I noticed that they both had glass bottles in their hands. Despite the difference in their respective sizes and the fact Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale seemed to be in the mood for conflict, the pair on the receiving end of the abuse were verbally combative and sticking up for themselves.”They weren’t shying away from it but they were obviously offended by the abuse being levelled towards them.”What Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale were saying was far from harmless banter, it was nasty homophobic abuse.”I decided to intervene and asked Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale to stop abusing Kai and William. I said something like ‘leave it out – you shouldn’t be taking the piss because they’re gay.'”In response one of the guys said ‘Shut the f*** up and f**** off or I’ll bottle you.’ At the time he was holding a bottle in his right hand.”I decided at this point matters had become too serious to ignore and that I had to intervene to stop Ryan Ali. I struck Ryan Ali with my right hand just after he had delivered the blow on Kai and as he came at me with the bottle and had it raised.”At this point, I felt vulnerable and frightened. I was concerned for myself and others. We knew that they were prepared to use weapons that could do serious injury and I feared they could have other weapons with them.”The force I used in defending us was reasonable and entirely justified when the circumstances are viewed objectively. Amongst other things, Ryan Ali attacked Alex and Kai, with a weapon, when asked simply to stop using the homophobic abuse he was giving to Kai and William. This was an extreme act of aggression in the circumstances and informed my assessment of the situation.”I did not know Ryan Hale or Ryan Ali and I was forced to make a decision as to how far they would be prepared to go and what they might do if they got the upper hand. They had shown a willingness to use weapons in attacking people and were willing to gang up such that at points, the pair of them were attacking me on my own.”I knew they were prepared to use weapons and so had a reasonable belief they might be carrying more weapons, perhaps of a more serious type.”As the footage shows, when initially repelled, each of the men attacked and advanced towards me again. I needed to ensure that the incident was over and believed that I and those that I was with remained under threat at all material times.”Both Kai and William thanked me for preventing them from being beaten up.”The police interview given by Ryan Ali was also read to the jury on the third day of the trial. In it, Ali denied saying anything offensive to either Barry or O’Connor, but accepted that “one of the guys” became “quite irate” after “banter” between the men.”He raised his voice fairly loudly,” Ali said. “I know he wasn’t happy. I don’t know why he became irate.”Ali also claimed he didn’t recall where the bottle came from or holding it but accepted, having watched CCTV footage, that he brandished one in self-defence.”I believe I felt threatened,” he said. “I’ve a bottle up saying ‘move back’ I’m not trying to attack anyone. I can only guess I thought I was going to be attacked.”Ali also described how, as he lay “in the gutter” having allegedly been punched by Stokes, he made a phone call to the council’s CCTV office to ensure they had footage of the incident. He was subsequently taken to hospital by ambulance and diagnosed with a fractured eye socket.Earlier in the day, the jury were shown body-camera footage from the police officer (PC Stacey Allway) who arrested Stokes and heard from an off-duty police and community support officer who suggested Stokes was “the main aggressor” during the part of the fight he witnessed.Stokes is expected to take the witness stand on Thursday at about the time his England colleagues are due to start play in the Test against India at Lord’s.The trial continues.

Boycott determined to bat on as he recovers from major heart surgery

Geoffrey Boycott is ambitious to return to Test commentary later this summer, at the age of 79, despite undergoing major heart surgery which left him in a Leeds hospital for 10 days. The family made Boycott’s health public in an announcement by his daughter, Emma Boycott, on Twitter.Emma Boycott said: “”My father, Geoffrey Boycott, had quadruple bypass open heart surgery on Wednesday June 27. He spent 10 days in hospital in Leeds, with most of that time in the Cardiac Critical Care unit.”The surgeon says the operation was a success and has now allowed him home to recover from the invasive surgery. This will take some time so he will not be commentating at the start of the England vs India Test series but hopes to be back at work for the third Test at Nottingham.”Boycott’s ambition to be working professionally again by mid-August is unsurprising for somebody of uncompromising and determined nature whose life revolves largely around the sport that has fulfilled him for a lifetime.Whether this will turn out to be his final season, though, must now be viewed as a possibility. His uncompromising commentary style has long had admirers and detractors both inside and outside the BBC.Last September, Henry Blofeld, two years younger than Boycott at 79, chose to bow out at Lord’s, to great acclaim, and there will be some in the higher echelons of the corporation who will wish him well and dare to contemplate the possibility of retirement.

Arsenal keen on "unplayable" winger who’s been compared to Mbappe

Arsenal are now keeping close tabs on a winger who's been compared to Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe, according to a report.

Are Arsenal signing a winger?

The Gunners had a relatively busy summer transfer window, during which they strengthened in a number of key areas, but they did not bring in any back-up options for Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, despite being linked with several options.

At the very start of the summer, it was reported that Mikel Arteta had four targets in mind, namely Raphinha, Ferran Torres, Moussa Diaby and Wilfried Zaha, but the manager ultimately opted to stick with the wingers he already had at his disposal.

However, ahead of the January transfer window, it now seems likely the north London club will renew their interest in a winger, having recently made it clear they are interested in Club Brugge wonderkid Antonio Nusa, who's been compared to Neymar.

Another young option for Arsenal is Borussia Dortmund starlet Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, with Dean Jones revealing he could be on Arteta's shortlist, as the manager is on the lookout for "new alternatives out wide."

However, it has now been reported that the Gunners could move for a more established winger, with The Mirror detailing they are one of three Premier League clubs keeping a close eye on Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele.

Tottenham and West Ham United are also named as potential suitors for Dembele, who has not gotten off to the start he would have liked after completing a move to the Parc des Princes from Barcelona in the summer, joining in a £50m deal.

The Frenchman is without a goal in his first five games for PSG, sparking calls for him to be dropped, although the report makes it clear it is unlikely they will consider a sale this early into his career with the club.

However, if the French champions change their stance ahead of the January transfer window, then Arsenal could be waiting in the wings, with Arteta searching for a forward player capable of taking the burden off Saka and Martinelli.

Why did Ousmane Dembele leave Barcelona?

The 26-year-old decided to leave Barca for a number of reasons, but a key factor was learning that the La Liga club had explored the option of sending him and Gavi on loan to PSG in exchange for Mbappe, indicating he was not viewed as an important player.

The former Barca man has been compared to his new teammate in the past, with Spanish football expert Terry Gibson saying: "Dembele can be just as effective as Mbappe. He can be unplayable at times"

During his time with the Spanish club, the France international went through phases of being very impressive, picking up 13 assists in 21 La Liga games in the 2021-22 season, but he did not perform at that level consistently enough.

As such, Arsenal should be wary about shelling out a huge fee on the forward, but if he is available for a cut-price amount, then it could definitely be worth pursuing a deal in the January transfer window.

Everton transfer news: Demarai Gray’s situation gets even weirder

Everton turned down a deadline day offer for Demarai Gray, as a new report reveals the latest twist in the bizarre situation unfolding around the Blues winger.

How much did Demarai Gray cost Everton?

Back in 2021, Gray arrived on Merseyside from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported €2m (£1.7m), but with his contract expiring in less than a year, he was heavily linked with an exit during the recent transfer window to ensure that he doesn’t leave as a free agent next summer.

The Jamaica international was initially in talks to join Premier League rivals Fulham, but after seeing that respective move fall through, he began to attract interest from Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas and unnamed clubs over in Saudi Arabia, as per BBC Sport.

The Toffees’ left-winger is yet to feature in any competition so far this season, with Sean Dyche detailing the reason for his absence as both fitness concerns and uncertainty surrounding his future, though having been removed from the squad list in the club’s matchday programme, the issues appear to lie deeper than what’s being let on.

Taking to social media, the 27-year-old seemingly criticised the manager for the way he is treating him behind the scenes. He said: “Everton fans have always been great with me but it's so difficult to play for someone who don't show you respect as a person.”

Is Demarai Gray leaving Everton?

According to Football Insider, the situation gets even weirder as Everton “rejected a bid” for Gray from Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq on transfer deadline day – one would assume the manager and owners would jump at the chance to make a profit on an unhappy and unwanted player.

On September 1st at 6:30pm, Steven Gerrard’s side “lodged” a £7.5m offer for the attacker, but club chiefs “rebuffed the approach” because they didn’t feel they had the sufficient amount of time to enter the market and find a suitable replacement, which is again bizarre considering he is clearly not in the boss' plans anyway.

Everton forward Demarai Gray.

How many goals has Demarai Gray scored for Everton?

During his two years at Everton, Gray has racked up 18 goal contributions (12 goals and six assists) in 75 appearances, form which has previously seen him hailed an “attacking threat” by journalist Josh Bunting, and he continued to be just that last season.

The Birmingham-born talent recorded a total of 57 shots over the course of the previous campaign which was more than any of his fellow teammates, alongside 173 crosses which was the second-highest tally, via FBRef, showing his desire to create chances for himself and his peers in the final third.

The former Leicester star is furthermore a versatile operator having been deployed in seven different positions since the start of his career, including everywhere across the frontline and even three roles in the midfield, so he is a great option for the boss to have in the building should any unexpected injuries occur.

Following Gray’s social media outburst about Dyche, it could prove extremely difficult for the two parties to rebuild their relationship and for the player to work his way back into the fold, but considering the positive impact he brings to the side, it’s important that they try to get back on track for the sake of the club’s safety moving forward.
