Chelsea hold advantage over rival suitors in race for "phenomenal" striker

Chelsea have now entered the race to sign a “phenomenal” striker in the summer, and they hold an advantage over the rival suitors, according to a report.

The Blues have been pursuing a top striker for quite some time, with Victor Osimhen emerging as a major target last summer. However, the move fell through, and Nicolas Jackson has been called upon to lead the line this season.

Jackson made a flying start to the campaign, but the 23-year-old has failed to score this calendar year, and it is becoming pretty clear Enzo Maresca will attempt to bring in an upgrade in the summer window.

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg recently revealed RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is a target, with Maresca’s side said to hold a concrete interest in the Slovenian, while they are also expected to enter talks to sign Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak.

Chelsea’s ability to attract strikers in Isak’s category will likely hinge upon whether they qualify for the Champions League this season, with the race very close heading into the last 10 games of the Premier League season.

However, the Blues are also starting to make contingency plans in case they miss out on their main targets, and they have now entered the race to sign Strasbourg’s Emanuel Emegha, according to a report from CaughtOffside.

Emanuel Emegha for Sturm Graz.

Emegha is viewed as an ideal alternative option, should their pursuits of their main targets be unsuccessful, and the French club would be willing to let him leave for the relatively low fee of between €22m and €25m (£18-21m).

A whole host of Premier League clubs have also shown interest in the striker, namely Everton, West Ham United, Aston Villa and Newcastle United, but Chelsea hold an advantage over the rival suitors.

As Strasbourg are also owned by BlueCo, it will be easier to facilitate a deal, should the Blues decide to make a concrete approach.

"Phenomenal" Emegha impressing in France

The Dutchman has been impressive in front of goal in Ligue 1 this season, netting 11 goals, having been in prolific form this calendar year, picking up a total of eight goals and one assist in 2025.

The 22-year-old has also received high praise from football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who lauded him as “phenomenal”, so there are plenty of indications he could be capable of making the step-up to one of the Premier League’s top clubs at some point.

That said, the Strasbourg star should remain a back-up option for the Blues, given that some of their other summer targets have a lot more experience at the top level.

Chelsea remain interested in Osimhen, despite missing out last summer, and the Nigerian has a proven track record of scoring goals, netting nine in 17 Champions League games, while also scoring 26 times for Napoli in their historic Serie A title-winning season.

Big name manager with 100% win record vs Celtic hints he'd join Rangers

One high-profile manager has hinted that he is open to managing Rangers in the future, as those at Ibrox search for Philippe Clement’s long-term successor.

Rangers manager rumours

The Gers decided to bring in former captain Barry Ferguson until the end of the season after parting ways with the Belgian.

However, in the Scottish Premiership, things didn’t go to plan for Ferguson in his first game in charge at Ibrox last weekend. Ferguson’s side lost to Motherwell, however, the ex-skipper can improve his chances of getting the Rangers job on a full-time basis with a positive result against Celtic next weekend.

It isn’t just Ferguson who has been mentioned as a target for Rangers, with likely new owners the 49ers Enterprises on the manager hunt after agreeing a deal in principle to own the Scottish giants.

Derek McInnes of Kilmarnock and former Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner were two early names mentioned with the long-term Ibrox vacancy, and recently, it has been claimed that Rangers and the 49ers have made Rafael Benitez the preferred managerial target.

The Spaniard has been out of work for 12 months now after leaving Celta Vigo but is keen to return to the dugout, and another experienced name has also hinted at a move to Scotland, but not immediately.

Mourinho hints at managing Rangers in future

Rangers are currently halfway through their Europa League last 16 tie with Fenerbahce, with Ferguson coming up against iconic manager Jose Mourinho.

During the first leg in Turkey, Ferguson got the better of Mourinho, with Rangers taking a 3-1 advantage into the second leg after an opening goal from Cyriel Dessers and a brace from Vaclav Cerny.

The former Real Madrid, Chelsea and Man Utd boss was asked about the chances of managing in Scotland in the future, and appeared to be open to a move down the line, saying ‘why not?’

Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce.

“In this moment, no, because I have a job. It’s a job that motivates me and demands loyalty. But why not in the future? People can say the Scottish league is a league of two teams, but it is a league of passion. Passion in football is everything.

“To play in empty stadiums and competitions where there is not that fire of the passion does not make any sense.

“Celtic and Rangers are two big clubs with incredible history also in Europe. I have lots of respect. They are big clubs with big fan bases, expectations. Celtic has a fantastic coach in Brendan [Rodgers]. Rangers has Ferguson now and I am not searching for a new job.”

Mourinho, who plays a 3-5-2 system and has been called “outstanding”, currently has Fenerbahce second in the Super Lig, four points behind Galatasaray. He also has a 100% record against Rangers’ rivals, Celtic, beating them in the 2003 UEFA Cup final with FC Porto to win his first European trophy.

The two-time Champions League winner was only appointed last summer and has a contract until 2026, but a move down the line to Glasgow could be one to watch.

Bad news for Arsenal and Chelsea as Xabi Alonso rules out Rodrygo transfer despite reports Brazilian forward wants to leave La Liga giants

Speaking in his first press conference as Madrid head coach, Alonso made it clear the Brazilian winger remains a crucial part of his plans despite reports his agent is sounding out Premier League interest.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The 24-year-old is said to be unhappy with his current role at Madrid following the arrival of Kylian Mbappe and it was recently revealed that Arsenal and Chelsea are both keeping tabs on him.

The Brazilian camp has apparently contacted clubs in England to assess the market, and the price being floated is between €80 million (£67m/$91m) and €100m (£84m/$114m). However, despite all the speculation, Rodrygo has never publicly said he wants to leave.

WHAT XABI ALONSO SAID

Alonso says he has no desire to let the 24-year-old leave in the next transfer window, though, telling reporters: "Rodrygo is a Real Madrid player, and I will speak to everyone at Real Madrid. They deserve it, and we need him. Rodrygo is an amazing player; we will need him."

Alonso’s stance puts Madrid in a strong position to keep Rodrygo at the Bernabeu, at least for the upcoming season. But as the transfer window heats up, the winger’s future may still hinge on how the club balances incoming signings with existing talent, especially as Premier League giants continue to circle.

Newcastle chasing 3 summer signings alongside Trafford after scout meeting

Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell appears to be a busy man, following a new update regarding the club’s upcoming summer transfer business.

Cordero and Diao head Newcastle target list

Malaga teenager Antonio Cordero has been heavily linked with a summer move to the Magpies and now another youngster, Assane Diao, has also been mentioned as a target. The 19-year-old winger is currently plying his trade at Serie A side Como, but could soon head to Tyneside as Mitchell and Co. build for the future.

Juventus attacker Kenan Yildiz has also been backed to seal a switch to Newcastle at the end of the season, but it may have to be part of a swap deal involving key midfielder Sandro Tonali, which will not appeal to the fans in St James’.

Meanwhile, Atalanta ace Ademola Lookman could leave the reigning Europa League holders this summer, having fallen out with manager Gian Peiro Gasperini. The Magpies are ready to swoop, but face competition from the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal.

Newcastle could also reportedly be offered the chance to sign Manchester City winger Jack Grealish, with the England international falling out of favour under Pep Guardiola this season, as well as struggling with injuries. He could come in and provide competition for Anthony Gordon on the left flank.

Newcastle want to sign CB, winger and attacking midfielder

According to The Daily Mail‘s Craig Hope, Newcastle are looking at signing three players in different areas of the pitch this summer alongside James Trafford, who is expected to join from Burnley.

As well as the Clarets goalkeeper, a “right-sided centre back, right winger and versatile midfielder/forward will also be sought”, as Mitchell works his magic after leading a “scouting summit at Gateshead’s Hilton Hotel last weekend”.

Paul Mitchell at Newcastle United.

This is such an exciting transfer update for Newcastle fans, following a relatively disappointing summer window last time around. PIF have reportedly given the green light to spend this year, however, so a busier time of things is expected.

Several fresh faces have to arrive at the end of the campaign this time around in order to bring a freshness to the squad, and all the positions mentioned are key areas to improve in. At least one centre-back addition is imperative, considering Sven Botman is the only player in that position in his 20s, with Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Jamaal Lascelles all arguably past their absolute peak.

A right-sided attacker is also vital, even though Jacob Murphy is enjoying an excellent season, with Miguel Almiron’s departure affecting the depth there, and an elite option is needed to be a regular starter, such as Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo.

ByBrett Worthington Feb 27, 2025

The hope is that Newcastle avoid having to sell star player Alexander Isak, holding firm and rejecting possible huge bids, but even if he stays put, another striker is also needed. Callum Wilson’s best days are behind him, and he will likely leave on a free when his contract expires, so a younger successor must be found.

Rangers must regret selling "firework" who’s now outperforming Bajrami

Glasgow Rangers’ failed to really improve their first-team squad during the winter window, as Philippe Clement made just one signing.

Rafael Fernandes arrived on a six-month loan deal, although there is an option to buy inserted into the agreement.

The young centre-back was given his first start against Queen’s Park last weekend in the Scottish Cup clash at Ibrox.

Rangers managerPhilippeClementbefore the match

It was the perfect game for Fernandes to get accustomed to life in Glasgow, yet it soon turned into a nightmare.

While he didn’t do anything particularly wrong throughout the game, the 1-0 defeat ranks as the club’s worst defeat in their recent history, perhaps of all time.

In truth, the entire starting XI were way off the required levels during the shock defeat and a massive improvement is needed ahead of the match against Hearts on Sunday afternoon in the Premiership.

One notable disappointment was the performance of Nedim Bajrami, who has stagnated over the previous few months.

Nedim Bajrami has struggled at Rangers of late

The game against the Championship side was expected to give the likes of Bajrami and Ianis Hagi an ideal chance to notch a goal or two, thus bolstering their confidence in what was meant to be a fairly routine victory.

Where Are They Now

Instead, what followed was a dismal performance, especially by the Albanian, who couldn’t find a way through the Queen’s Park defence.

Indeed, he was even subbed off after the first half, proving how dreadful he had been during the opening 45 minutes at Ibrox.

Following the game, journalist Ben Banks of Glasgow World gave Bajrami a match rating of 2/10 while stating that the attacking midfielder was ‘found seriously wanting and not for the first time. Subbed at half-time after no impact’.

After a promising start in Glasgow, the former Sassuolo star hasn’t quite lived up to his £3.4m transfer fee, that’s for sure.

Since the turn of the year, Bajrami has registered just three assists in all competitions for the Light Blues, although two of those came against non-league side Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup.

In 20 Premiership games, the 25-year-old has scored just once, created four big chances, averaged 1.3 key passes and succeeded with 1.2 dribbles per game.

Furthermore, Bajrami can be often found wanting defensively, winning just 2.1 total duels per game in the top flight since he made his debut in September.

His performances drew criticism from Stevie Clifford, founder of popular fan media outlet Four Lads Had a Dream, who said:

Unless he improves, quickly, Bajrami could find himself on the way out of Rangers after just a solitary season at the club.

Over the years, the Gers have sold players who have shone since leaving. One notable example is Fashion Sakala, who is enjoying life in the Middle East and is even outperforming Bajrami this season.

Fashion Sakala’s Rangers stats

Sakala made the move to Ibrox ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, costing Steven Gerrard nothing as he was secured on a pre-contract agreement.

It took a while for him to settle in Scotland, but over time, he gave the supporters glimpses of what he was capable of.

Fashion Sakala

He featured 50 times during his maiden season, scoring 12 goals and registering seven assists. His unpredictable nature was often an advantage, as the opposition often didn’t quite know how to handle the African star.

Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton lauded the player midway through his first season, saying:

His second season didn’t start too well, as he found himself down the pecking order under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who preferred other options.

Under Michael Beale, however, the Zambian demonstrated his true talents. Between December 2022 and May 2023, Sakala netted 11 goals and grabbed seven assists, proving that he could have a solid future at the club under Beale.

That summer, Sakala was surprisingly sold by the manager, joining Saudi outfit Al-Fayha for a fee believed to be around £4m, which represented a decent profit on the player.

Since then, he has been in wonderful form. Might the club regret selling him when they did?

Fashion Sakala's record this season

The 27-year-old recorded 31 goal contributions – 22 goals and nine assists – last season for his new club, shining in his new surroundings as the Light Blues struggled, having to make do with the likes of Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers.

While the 2024/25 campaign hasn’t quite been as productive, he has still scored six times and grabbed four assists, which is two more than what Bajrami has registered during the current season.

Additionally, Sakala has created six big chances domestically, averages 2.8 shots, and 1.3 key passes and succeeds with 2,5 dribbles per match in the Saudi Pro League this season.

These numbers are of course, higher than the figures Bajrami is producing across the same period. Elsewhere, Sakala also wins 4.9 total duels per game in the top flight, which is more impressive than the 2.1 duels Bajrami wins each game.

Sakala may have divided opinion at times among the Ibrox faithful, but there was no denying his usefulness in certain games. Perhaps not the most clinical in front of goal, but he always tried to make something happen, and his unpredictable nature made it difficult for defenders to mark him effectively.

Clement could certainly use a player like Sakala right now, especially given how poor Rangers have been in recent weeks.

Postecoglou really wants Tottenham to sign "versatile" £13m international

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is personally eager for the club to move for a “versatile” player who’s impressed club scouts, as the Lilywhites continue pursuing their second January signing after missing out on Randal Kolo Muani.

Juventus win race for Kolo Muani as Tottenham miss out

Over the last week and beyond, Spurs and Juventus were reliably believed to be tussling for Kolo Muani’s signature – but a winner of the race has now been confirmed by reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano.

£27m player ready to join Tottenham if clubs can agree January deal

Spurs hold a serious advantage over fellow competitors.

3 ByEmilio Galantini Jan 11, 2025

On Tuesday evening, Romano dropped his famous “here we go” as Juve pipped Spurs in the battle for Kolo Muani’s signature – dealing bad news for Postecoglou, technical director Johan Lange and chairman Daniel Levy, as they are forced to return to the drawing board.

The 26-year-old PSG outcast was deemed by Spurs one of the best attackers available for hire on the January market (David Ornstein), so this news will come as a real blow for the club as they also prepare for a tense North London Derby against Arsenal this evening.

Following their snubbed advances to sign Kolo Muani, Postecoglou’s side remain in the market for a new forward, and the Australian has pleaded for his side to bring in some “help” for striker Dominic Solanke.

Randal Kolo Muani for PSG

“If we can get him some help, yeah. Dom has just been outstanding in the way he’s carried the frontline for us during this period,” said Postecoglou on support for Solanke.

“With Dom being a new player, it probably would have been easier for him to slip in and do his job but he’s taken on the responsibility of helping the whole team. He’s been great for us. I really feel there is more to him and his game. We’ll be able to get more out of him if we can him some help.”

As well as another attacking option, reports suggest they’re in the market for another midfielder. Tottenham are targeting Inter Milan’s Davide Frattesi as one option for that role, while it is believed Palmeiras star Richard Rios is on their agenda as well.

Ange Postecoglou really wants Richard Rios at Tottenham

As per CaughtOffside, sharing an update on their links to the Colombia international, Postecoglou is personally “very keen” for Tottenham to sign Rios.

This follows reports that Spurs had an official bid rejected for Rios very recently, and while it is unclear how much they offered, he could actually be snapped up for much cheaper than his £84 million release clause.

The 24-year-old signed a new contract in October 2024, including the seismic clause, but reports in South America claimed soon afterward that Palmeiras won’t sell for any less than £13 million (Hoy Diario del Magdalena via Sport Witness).

Rios is said to have really impressed N17 scouts as well. However, Spurs face stiff competition from Everton and Nottingham Forest, who are pushing hard to land the South American.

“Richard is a versatile player who can fit into several roles in midfield,” said Palmeiras head coach Abel Ferreira. “His ability to both defend and attack makes him a valuable asset for any team. We are excited to see what he brings to our squad.”
