Ollie Robinson in line for recall as England weigh up bowling balance

England are considering turning back to their one specialist quick approach for the must-win fourth Test in Ranchi, with Ollie Robinson set to make his first appearance of the tour. And they could also be boosted by Ben Stokes returning to his role as a seam-bowling allrounder. The tourists are yet to make a concrete decision on the exact make-up of their bowling line-up, but are leaning heavily towards the balance they struck in the first two Tests, where Mark Wood, then James Anderson, operated independently alongside three spinners, and Joe Root. Anderson and Wood then lined up alongside one another for the third Test, which India won by 434 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the series. After the pair sent down 76 overs between them and fielded on each of the four days in Ranchi, Robinson is expected to return to offer some fresh legs, with Wood likely to be rested. It then leaves Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum with a decision to make on whether to recall offspinner Shoaib Bashir for Anderson or stick with the veteran seamer, who has six wickets at 35.83 in his two appearances to date. A further option could be to reinforce the batting, if England anticipate the conditions offering extreme spin, with Dan Lawrence – a useful offspinner himself – a outside bet for a first start of the Stokes-McCullum era.Robinson’s previous Test appearance came against Australia at Headingley in July, which was also his last competitive match. Despite underwhelming in the Ashes, he still has 76 wickets at 22.21 in 19 caps, and can lean on his experience in Pakistan last winter when he managed nine dismissals at 21.22, with an economy rate of 2.47 on broadly unhelpful surfaces. The shift back to a spin-dominant attack has come after a first sight of the pitch at the JSCA International Stadium. Two days out from the start of the Test. England were surprised by the extent of the cracks already, and anticipate plenty of turn from the start of the match, with variable bounce to come into play sooner rather than later.”There’s a lot of cracks,” Ollie Pope, England’s vice-captain, said. “It’s very platey, and they’ve just wetted it as well, which generally dries it up. It doesn’t necessarily look like a belting wicket at the moment. It kind of looks like one half is good, and then there are a lot of platey cracks. That’s how we see it at the minute. I think we will see what happens tomorrow after the Indian team has looked at the wicket, then make a decision from there.””At the minute, it looks like batting from the far end, it’s outside the right-hander’s off stump and then from this end, the left-hander’s off-stump. It just looks like it’s down the wicket, it’s kind of plated on one side and then the other side looks like a pretty good wicket.Should Stokes be available to bowl, he could operate as a second seamer. Thus making England’s decision to recall Bashir that much easier, giving them the best of both worlds. After opening up the possibility of bowling again in the remainder of the series, the England captain used Wednesday’s first training session in Ranchi to bowl at batters for the first time since his left knee surgery in November. His session was a long stint, and was almost exclusively against Jonny Bairstow, with the help of England men’s selector Luke Wright standing as the umpire to keep an eye on his front foot. He looked strong throughout and, once finished, had a debrief with England team physician Glen Rae.Related

Stokes, with 197 wickets at 32.07, last bowled competitively in June, during the second Ashes Test at Lord’s. Having made a “pinky-promise” to team physio Ben Davies that he would not bowl in India, he could be about to break that.”There’s definitely a chance,” Pope said on the prospect of Stokes bowling this week. “He’s not confirmed it even in the changing-room, so we will see. He bowled at the batters today. We’ll see how he pulls up, and if that’s good hopefully we will see him with the ball in hand in the game.”Speaking on Monday, McCullum said it would be his job to hold Stokes back if he felt he was trying to progress too quickly. Similarly, Pope, as Stokes’ deputy, appreciates he will have the unenviable task of keeping Stokes in check while on the field.”I think when he’s going it’s pretty tough to get the ball out of his hand, to be honest. But I’ll chat to him before the game, see if he wants anything like that from me. If he’s got full confidence in his knee, I guess you’ve got to trust the medical advice and trust his opinions as well. That’s the main thing and if he needs a bit of guidance on the pitch, then I can be someone to lean on.”

“We’re going to have to look deep and have a bit of an analyse and learn; see what we’re doing and see what the best are doing,” NSW captain Moises Henriques said. “They’re the age-old cricket questions but unfortunately we’re just not doing it very well at the moment.”The result brought sweet relief for Victoria after they started the season with thumping defeats to Western Australia and Queensland. They were in some trouble at 131 for 6 in their second innings, but led by Peter Handscomb’s 90 they added 153 for the final four wickets to take complete control of the match.Tailender Fergus O’Neill was dangerous on his way to an unbeaten 70 as he combined in a 58-run final-wicket stand with Scott Boland.”[Handscomb] might have got a little clip from the coach after [how he was out in] the first innings,” Victoria captain Will Sutherland said. “The way he responded, they were incredibly valuable runs.”We knew it was going to be pretty much impossible for them to chase that total down thanks to him, which takes a big burden off the bowlers’ shoulders.”Victoria will be back in action next Saturday when they host Tasmania at the Junction Oval in Melbourne, while NSW face the ultimate test against reigning champions WA at the SCG.

The Express reports that Arsenal are contniuing informal discussions over a deal for Rogers, with sporting director Andrea Berta collecting intel on left-wing options for the Gunners. Higher profile targets including Nico Williams, Rodrygo and Anthony Gordon have been ruled out, as their transfer fee or expected wages would be too high for the club's budget.

Villa would likely demand a fee of at least £70m for Rogers, who has emerged as a key player for the Villans under Unai Emery. The Birmingham club are under PSR pressure, but are believed to be exploring a sale of their women's team or other first-team players in Emi Martinez or Jacob Ramsey, rather than facilitating a deal for Rogers.

Arsenal are also rumoured to be tracking the future of Eberechi Eze, who had previously been linked with arch-rivals Tottenham, as they look for options to compete with, or possibly replace incumbent starter Gabriel Martinelli. Recent reports suggest the Gunners could be ready to move on from the 24-year-old.

Arsenal are certainly expected to strengthen their attacking options this window, with repeated questions over their centre forward position proving to be something of a distraction to the Gunners. They have been linked with moves for Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko. If Martinelli does move on, the need at left-wing will become just as urgent, fuelling further speculation of a move for Rogers.

Farke has unearthed Leeds' modern-day Kewell in "exceptional" star

Whilst Leeds United’s recent history has often seen them flirt with promotion up to the Premier League, there was once a time at Elland Road where the Whites were top-flight regulars and succeeding at that.

The 1999/2000 season would see then Leeds boss David O’Leary guide his team to an unbelievable third place finish in England’s elite division, with multiple finishes in and around this position becoming commonplace soon after courtesy of Mark Viduka and Co regularly terrorising defences.

Viduka wasn’t the only Australian menace during this top period in Leeds’ Premier League stay, however, with Harry Kewell also regularly popping up with strikes down the left wing to complement the magic of the clinical centre-forward.

Harry Kewell's heroics at Leeds

The Sydney-born winger and the Melbourne-based striker would cause top-flight defenders all sorts of bother when donning Leeds white together, with Viduka going on to boast a sensational 72 goals and 17 assists from 166 appearances.

Kewell would go on to make a heftier 240 appearances for the West Yorkshire Titans, and whilst his goal haul sat at a lower total of 68, his bumper record of 28 assists from down the left flank would make him a firm fan’s favourite whenever he strutted his stuff.

That made his subsequent move to Liverpool in 2003 sting, considering Kewell was beloved at Elland Road for electric goals like this one hammered home versus Aston Villa, with the 58-time Australia international often utilising his sublime left foot.

Whilst Farke’s current crop will want to make a name for themselves away from the club’s illustrious past, it could be said regardless that the German has his own version of Kewell in 2025.

Leeds' modern-day Harry Kewell is driving them to promotion

Much like Kewell before him, this Whites superstar is a regular for his international side too, with a goal even coming his way during the recent break from Championship action.

Indeed, Daniel James fired home Wales’ opener against Kazakhstan to gift Craig Bellamy a 3-1 win in the Red Dragons hot seat, continuing his fine campaign for both club and country.

The ex-Manchester United forward has collected a sizeable ten goals and nine assists for himself in the second tier this season, with the Welshman – much like Kewell – becoming known for his entertaining, speedy displays down his trusty right flank.

Off the back of his ability to open up a defence in a moment’s notice either through devastating pace or via a decisive goal, the 27-year-old has managed to cement himself as a regular, with 27 goals and 21 assists now next to his name from 119 total clashes.

To be considered in a similar bracket to Kewell even more, it will be up to James to confidently provide goals and assists for his side if they make the leap up to the Premier League, having struggled at the higher level before.

The Whites number seven has been burnt by the allure of the top-flight in the past with a switch to Manchester United early into his playing days not working, despite former Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer once heralding James as “exceptional.”

He will want to live up to Solskjaer’s glowing appraisal by finally proving himself as a worthy Premier League talent, with the Welshman undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with in the second tier.

Kewell was also a joy to watch before souring his long-term Leeds legacy when Anfield came calling, with James unlikely to want to move away anytime soon, knowing the grass is greener for him situated at Elland Road.

Leeds are brewing a mini Raphinha at Thorp Arch who could replace Solomon

Leeds United’s sole focus rests on winning promotion up to the Premier League come the end of the gruelling 2024/25 Championship campaign, knowing full well the crushing low of missing out on a return to the top-flight.

Last season, Daniel Farke’s Whites slipped up in the second-tier playoff final to Southampton by a single goal, despite boasting some absurd talents for the level in the form of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter among other standout performers.

Leeds United manager DanielFarkeapplauds fans

Now, automatic promotion is the desired goal, with Leeds managing to lick their wounds at a lightning quick speed courtesy of a new breed of star emerging, as Tottenham Hotspur loanee Manor Solomon continues to stick out as a fresh, blistering attacker.

Manor Solomon's heroics at Leeds this season

Solomon had previously proven his class back at parent employers Spurs, with the 25-year-old winger picking up a promising two assists from six first-team appearances after bagging five goals from 25 games playing for Fulham.

Unfortunately for Solomon, injury difficulties sustained in North London has resulted in him being chucked out on loan to Elland Road, but he has managed to cause second tier defences all sorts of bother from minute one of his arrival.

In total, the slick number 14 has picked up a sizeable seven goals and seven assists from 31 league encounters, with only Daniel James and Joel Piroe bettering that amount in Farke’s entire camp.

If promotion was to be sealed, it wouldn’t be implausible to suggest that Leeds go in for Solomon on a permanent deal, with talk floating about already that the Whites could land his services for around the £20m mark.

Everton are also allegedly keen to snap up the skilful 5 foot 7 attacker, with Leeds presumably keeping their options wide open as to whether they could be able to strike up this deal, or whether they’d look in alternative places to replace Solomon’s firepower.

One other option might see the West Yorkshire outfit bump up a talented youth product to the senior side.

Leeds could replace Solomon with homegrown star

Like a permanent swoop for Solomon wouldn’t be out of the realms of possibility here, neither would the potential of Leeds deciding to uncover their next homegrown gem as his immediate replacement.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Lucas Thomas might well be the lucky 20-year-old starlet to benefit if the ex-Shakhtar Donetsk man does just return to Spurs at the end of the campaign, with the academy prodigy capable of playing all across the forward positions if called into action.

Thomas will now return to his boyhood employers at the end of the season having been exposed to the tough demands of men’s football, but the exciting attacker hasn’t receded into his shell out on loan at York City and FC Halifax Town, with the Crewe-born forward picking up a promising four strikes and two assists from 20 total appearances.

Coupled with his electric six strikes this campaign in Premier League 2 action with the Leeds U21s, he could soon be ready to bang down Farke’s door for some senior opportunities, especially with his versatility in the forward areas seeing him line up as a striker, on top of also coming into the side down the flanks.

It’s those qualities, coupled with praise from York boss Adam Hinshelwood, that generate excitement the most. “He has got a lovely left foot and definitely knows where the back of the net is,” Hinshelwood stated. Versatility? Check. Lovely left foot? Check. Can score goals? Check. This could be a mini Raphinha in waiting for Leeds.

Looking at the table above, it would not be a huge surprise if Farke chooses to unleash Thomas into his lineups as a second-in-command presence to Piroe.

Confident UP Warriorz, well-rounded Delhi Capitals meet in playoff rehearsal

Big Picture

UP Warriorz have Sophie Ecclestone to thank for bailing them out of troubled waters for two games in a row now. Wins that seemed tough – first in a low-scorer against Mumbai Indians, and then in a tall chase against Gujarat Giants – have catapulted them into the top three.Even if third-placed Warriorz lose against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday, they are certain to play the Eliminator, thus giving them a shot at the final; but if they beat Capitals, it will force a three-way race for the top spot if Mumbai happen to lose their final match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, Warriorz are so far behind both Mumbai and Capitals on net run rate that it is near impossible to catch up in just one game. That said, they would have probably settled for third if you had asked them last week, which saw them suffer their third loss in four games despite starting the season with a win.Over to their opponents. Capitals have come storming back to steal the top spot that seemed destined to be Mumbai’s when they had raced to five straight wins. But two losses in a row for Mumbai have opened the door ajar. In sending Mumbai on a tailspin by chasing down 110 in just nine overs last night, Capitals are in a position where a win in their final group game could vault them straight into the final provided Mumbai either lose their final match, or win it but don’t cross Capitals on net run rate. But Capitals could finish atop with a loss too, though they wouldn’t want to enter the playoffs devoid of momentum. Capitals further stand to gain if Royal Challengers bring their A game to beat Mumbai.Warriorz would dearly love for their Indian batters to turn up and strike form. Devika Vaidya, Kiran Navgire and Deepti Sharma have all struggled lately, but their lack of runs have been compensated by contributions from Grace Harris and Tahlia McGrath.Capitals, though, have no such worries. Meg Lanning is the highest run-getter of the tournament so far, while Shafali Verma’s destructive game that seemed to have deserted her during the T20 World Cup has given them the turbocharge up top; her strike rate of 189 is clearly the best for any batter with at least 200 runs in the tournament. To add to that, Marizanne Kapp has been scoring runs and picking wickets for fun, Alice Capsey has lent batting muscle in the powerplay, and Jemimah Rodrigues has provided a calming influence in the middle order. Then there has been the ever-reliable Jess Jonassen who has been around to play a role similar to what Michael Bevan did for Australia all those years ago – bail the team out of trouble time and again. This is a well-rounded batting unit high on confidence.Arundhati Reddy’s bowling was applauded after the win against Mumbai Indians•BCCI

Players to Watch

With scores of 12, 8 and 1 in her last three innings, Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy has hit a rough patch. But she has the reputation of being a big-match player. As the Eliminator nears, there couldn’t have been a better chance than this to roar back into form and carry the confidence of doing so against a gun bowling attack.Don’t let the raw numbers fool you. She may have just two wickets in five games, but Arundhati Reddy had a rhythm to her bowling that Lanning applauded unprompted after the win against Mumbai. Reddy also appears to have cranked up her pace, and seemed menacing with her nip-backers during her spell of 1 for 10 in three overs in that match.

Possible XIs

Delhi Capitals: 1 Meg Lanning (capt), 2 Shafali Verma, 3 Alice Capsey, 4 Jemimah Rodrigues, 5 Marizanne Kapp, 6 Jess Jonassen, 7 Taniya Bhatia (wk), 8 Shikha Pandey, 9 Arundhati Reddy, 10 Radha Yadav, 11 Tara NorrisUP Warriorz: 1 Alyssa Healy (capt, wk), 2 Devika Vaidya, 3 Tahlia McGrath, 4 Kiran Navgire, 5 Grace Harris, 6 Deepti Sharma, 7 Sophie Ecclestone, 8 Simran Shaikh, 9 Anjali Sarvani, 10 Parshavi Chopra, 11 Rajeshwari Gayakwad

Stats and Trivia

  • Among teams that have finished in the top three, Capitals’ pace bowler Shikha Pandey’s ten wickets is the most among seamers in the competition.
  • Harris’ strike rate of 170.07 is third best in the competition among batters who have made at least 200 runs, with Sophie Devine second with a strike rate of 175.
  • Ecclestone’s economy of 6.21 is the best among those who have picked up at least ten wickets this season

It didn't take long for those records to be broken, however. At the 90-minute mark, Nwaneri entered the fray. At 18 years and 39 days old, the winger added to his personal collection of records. Famously, Nwaneri played in the Premier League at just 15 years and 181 days old, making him the youngest player to ever appear in the English top flight.

WHAT NEXT FOR LEWIS-SKELLY AND NWANERI?

Both men will be a week older when they face PSG at Parc des Princes for the return leg. Both will hope to play a pivotal role in what should be a watershed moment for this young Arsenal side.

“I don’t know, it doesn’t depend only on us, so our intention is clear, but the possibilities are affected by three parties. I’m very confident with the work that the club is doing and exploring every single opportunity that we believe can have an impact on the team. That’s certainly the case, and if we can agree something, we will. If not, we won’t.”

Arsenal submitted a £60 million bid for Ollie Watkins earlier this week, which came on the eve of Aston Villa’s crucial Champions League clash at home to Celtic, and it was swiftly rejected by Unai Emery’s side.

There have been some reports that Arsenal could make a second bid for Watkins, as the boyhood Gunners supporter is keen on a move to north London (as per Graeme Bailey), but Villa selling Jhon Duran to Al-Nassr makes this deal very unlikely at best.

Arsenal offered Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface

According to a report from journalist Graeme Bailey once more, Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface is being presented to Arteta’s side as a potential Watkins alternative.

The Nigerian scored 21 goals in all competitions last campaign, helping Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga title, and he was subject to an accepted £50 million offer from Al-Nassr before they signed Duran instead.

Arsenal have been offered Boniface by intermediaries, who’ve made them aware of the 24-year-old’s availability as they seek a new club for the striker. Boniface’s injury record could be a cause for concern, but as for his quality, there is little doubt he’d provide Arteta with firepower.

“Victor’s a real problem for opposition defences,” said Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso.

“He’s powerful, quick and makes runs from deep. He has a good mentality and works for the team, not for himself.”
