Godleman's hundred soothes Derbyshire amid mystery of two Ben Slaters

Sussex claimed late wickets to keep themselves in the hunt for a first innings lead on a day where Ben Slater needed to be in two places at once

David Hopps20-Aug-20181:43

Moeen and Mitchell leave Yorkshire feeling Toxic

ScorecardIt can confidently be stated by all present at Hove that Ben Slater is still a Derbyshire cricketer. For a couple more days at least. The two electronic scoreboards displayed his name in block capitals. Mike Charman, who doubles up as Sussex’s scorer and PA announcer, introduced him to the crease with a characteristic flourish and when a dodgy drive at a wide one saw him fall at third slip, his 24 was duly added to his Derbyshire career record.Odd therefore that Nottinghamshire’s website should already be proudly announcing the completion of his transfer. Apparently, he was available for selection for the current Championship match against Hampshire, only he wasn’t really because he was batting for Derbyshire at Hove. There was a wonderfully ironic quote about how he couldn’t wait to get started at Trent Bridge; that much was abundantly clear. How had Notts jumped the gun? Had they been hacked? Could they somehow blame it on the Russians? Nobody could be sure, but roughly the time that the story was removed, and showed up as Error 404, Slater was committing Error 24. County cricket is in a state of change, but to find two Ben Slaters operating in parallel worlds was a little disturbing.More pertinently for Notts, whose record of signing top-order batsmen in the past 10 years has hardly been one of unbroken success, the signing of Slater would be a gamble. Two of his three Championship hundreds for Derbyshire came in a single match when they thrashed a pitiful Leicestershire by 408 runs. That leaves one other Championship hundred in four years. On such days, to be captain of Derbyshire can feel a thankless task. But Billy Godleman, who has had a good white-ball season but who was only averaging 13 in the Championship, responded with 122 from 196 balls before he was bowled by a legspinner from Luke Wells – Wells’ second ball – which turned through the gate.Godleman is hardly the most elegant batsman around, prospering by a series of shovelled cuts – two in the first over after lunch off Jofra Archer, flipping Danny Briggs for six over the short boundary on the scoreboard side, and hacking Chris Jordan through point to reach his first Championship hundred of the season. He responded by crossing himself, probably praying that there wasn’t another one of him playing for Nottinghamshire. The most stylish knock was played, as so often, by Wayne Madsen, who is another batsman who might be on his way and who fell for 72 to the first ball after tea trying to cut Jordan, a fair-enough shot, badly executed. Faced by Sussex’s 440, Derbyshire were 285 for 2 before Godleman fell, but they lost three wickets in a final session where Archer and Jordan set the tone in the first hour with Sussex’s most disciplined phase of the day.Sean Ervine, on loan from Hampshire, was run out for 2 by Ollie Robinson from mid-on (a good but marginal call by the umpire), and nightwatchman Hardus Viljoen pushed forward with consummate sobriety to the last ball of the day but was bowled as Briggs turned one past his outside edge.At 315 for 5, Derbyshire trailed at the close by 125 and Sussex, second in the table, had come out even from a demanding day. Alex Hughes, 60 not out overnight, only his second fifty of the season, carries many of Derbyshire’s hopes on a slow surface which neutered Sussex’s seam attack but which is offering some turn for the spinners.

Faster than Salah: Liverpool eyeing move to sign "interesting" player

Liverpool could have to replace Mohamed Salah in the near future, and they are interested in signing someone even faster than him, according to a fresh transfer update.

Could Salah leave Liverpool in 2024?

The time will come when the Reds have to find a successor for Salah, who is out of contract at Anfield in the summer of 2025. There was a huge amount of interest in him during the summer transfer window, with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad seeing a £150m bid rejected, but there is every chance that they could be back in for him in 2024.

At that point, the 31-year-old will only have a year remaining on his deal, so Liverpool will know that it may well be the last opportunity to earn enormous money for him, while a move away could even appeal to the player himself. Replacing Salah may prove to be an almost impossible task for FSG and Jurgen Klopp, should he move on at the end of the season, but it looks as though one new attacker is being lined up at Anfield.

Liverpool line-up speedster to replace Salah

Speaking to Caught Offside [via Empire of the Kop], journalist Christian Falk claimed that young Hoffenheim winger Maximilian Beier is seen as a potential signing by Liverpool, labelling the player as "interesting".

"Another name on Liverpool’s list is Maximilian Beier of Hoffenheim – I heard he’s definitely on the list, as he brings something that’s very interesting for Liverpool! His high speed this season was 35.45kmph.

"It’s also really good for Germany; he’s the second-fastest German player behind Leroy Sane. His contract at Hoffenheim runs until 2025 and I heard he has a release clause; he’ll be a little bit more expensive for English clubs but for German clubs he’ll only cost €20m. So you see, Liverpool are looking around at the Bundesliga again.

"He’s a player you can educate, fast, can play as a striker as well as on the wings, which would be beneficial for Liverpool’s rotations in the forward line. I think he’s interesting. He could be the next German national player, perhaps not in the coming matches, but he’ll be in the national team.

"He’s not very expensive, which would fit into Liverpool’s business model. Keep in mind, though, that Brentford and Everton’s interest in the player is concrete."

In truth, the hope is that Salah remains at Liverpool beyond this season and also 2025, considering the Egyptian King is still a world-class player who could be at the top well into his 30s. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but Beier could certainly be an intriguing option as a long-term successor.

The 20-year-old has been hailed for the "dynamism" that he possesses by Hoffenheim head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo recently, and he is actually even faster than Salah, having clocked a speed of 35.45km/h, as Falk mentioned, compared to the Egyptian's tally of 33.9mk/h.

Granted, Beier is still a raw player who is learning his trade at the top level, but he looks to have the right qualities to be a great fit at Liverpool, already scoring six goals in 18 appearances for Hoffenheim, and once in two caps for Germany's Under-21s, making this one to watch.

Liverpool: Reds hit the jackpot by selling bargain £3m signing for 533% profit

Liverpool's transfer activity has been nothing short of exemplary under Jurgen Klopp's stewardship, proving to be a far cry from the mess that the club was in prior to the German manager's arrival in 2015.

Premier League rivals such as Manchester United and Everton have watched from afar, painted with dejection, as a sleeping giant awoke from an almighty slumber, rising to glean silverware across a multitude of fronts to re-establish Liverpool as one of the powerhouses in European football.

The Reds have endured several bouts of turbulence along the way, but there is no questioning the profound triumph that has restored a club and cemented a lasting spot at the forefront of the game.

One of the pillars of the dynasty is born from the pinpoint precision in the transfer market, with Klopp and his team continually plucking exciting talents and developing them into first-class stars riding towards triumph of the highest order – winning the Premier League and Champions League both.

One shrewd signing who did not prove to be a success is Dominic Solanke, but the Englishman's sale produced a most valuable recuperation after arriving on the cheap.

When did Liverpool sign Dominic Solanke?

In July 2017, Liverpool completed the transfer of a 19-year-old Solanke from Chelsea, expected to pay a tribunal fee of £3m for the teenage talent.

Making 27 appearances across the 2017/18 campaign – his sole season in Liverpool red – the starlet would only post one goal and assist apiece, actually scoring on the final day of the Premier League season in a 4-0 rout over Brighton & Hove Albion.

That goalscoring game would prove to be his last, and while he did not enjoy the most prolific campaign, his qualities had been displayed and the suitors came calling.

How much did Liverpool sell Dominic Solanke for?

Liverpool sold Solanke for a fee of £19m plus add-ons, which the Liverpool Echo recently confirmed had been realised to take the cost up to roughly £24m.

This means that Klopp sealed a bargain move for a talented youngster and, once realising it likely wouldn't work out as hoped, cashed in for a big reward.

As is delineated, there is a clear trend regarding how Klopp conducts his transfer business at Liverpool, selling players for large fees after securing their services for peanuts.

It is quite telling how Liverpool are loathe to cash in on Klopp-signed talents, with the 56-year-old instead opting for maximisation of quality before shipping them on when felt that they have proved their worth and served their duty on Merseyside, as evidenced by transfers of Sadio Mane and Fabinho over the past few years, both leaving for around the same figure used to sign them.

Solanke was quickly determined to not offer the kind of skill set that would allow him license to disrupt the prodigious attacking triumvirate of Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, instead sold for a lucrative fee despite scoring just once.

Of course, he is now the impressive arrowhead at Bournemouth, and while the Cherries are struggling, his influence has been integral to their efforts to return to the Premier League, then preserve their top-flight status despite overarching expectation that they would not avoid the drop.

What is Dominic Solanke's market value now?

According to Football Transfers, the 26-year-old is now worth £25.5m, but given the intrigue in his services this year, it's clear that Premier League outfits are willing to surpass such a figure.

Indeed, according to Football Insider, West Ham United were considering a £40m swoop in the summer to replace Gianluca Scamacca, while Fulham were also admirers but were not willing to bid more than £25m-£30m.

Dominic Solanke scores in Bournemouth's away victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

Clearly, Solanke has bloomed into a vibrant striker capable of leading the line at an outfit striving for safety in the top flight, proving his worth and then some.

Why is Dominic Solanke worth that much?

Last season, Solanke's erstwhile Cherries manager, Gary O'Neill, hailed him a "dream" forward, having clinched seven goals and assists apiece during the 2022/23 campaign.

This season, under new boss Andoni Iraola, he is plying his trade admirably, scoring four goals and providing one assist despite his side having yet to win in the Premier League.

As per FBref, the 6 foot 1 talisman ranks among the top 24% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 18% for progressive carries, the top 19% for successful take-ons and the top 7% for clearances per 90, highlighting his energy and aptitude as a tenacious presence for his side.

Now on £50k-per-week, Solanke is a proven striker on the Premier League scene and has successfully navigated around the pathos of failing to make his mark at both Chelsea and Liverpool and cemented a starting berth at the Vitality Stadium.

And while the recent transfer window linked him with a move to outfits such as West Ham for figures such as £40m, Solanke's sale very much came at the appropriate time for Liverpool, who risked a depreciation had they kept him on the books and shelved him on the sidelines.

There is no maudlin sentiment here, all parties secured positive position and in fact one of great prudence; and Solanke's sale is but one of many under Klopp's leadership to illustrate the incredible impact he has had in turning the entire ship around, planting lasting success than will surpass even his time at the helm.

Aston Villa: Dean Smith let Jack Grealish 2.0 slip through their grasp

Aston Villa have been a team inspired by the arrival of Unai Emery, with the Spaniard installing a new level of aspiration to the squad at Villa Park.

The former Arsenal manager took the reins from Steven Gerrard in October 2022, transforming the outlook in the Midlands by guiding the club from 16th to 7th in less than a year in charge.

The squad, the staff and the fans seem to have adapted as well as possible to the four-time Europa League winners’ style, with only Pep Guardiola as of the end of August winning more points in the Premier League this year than Emery.

Along with making vast improvements on the pitch, the Spaniard orchestrated a successful summer transfer window, securing the signatures of five new faces welcomed in order to bolster the squad.

Emery, joined by his former Sevilla colleague Monchi, broke the club’s transfer record fee to obtain Moussa Diaby, confirming the signing of their number one target in a deal worth £51.9m.

This summer, Villa were able to deliver their primary target, however, this hasn’t always been the case, with one of Dean Smith’s wanted men failing to make the move to Villa Park as hoped.

Looking back, the signing of Emile Smith Rowe could have been an integral addition to the squad as it is today, but Smith learned the hard way that things aren’t always possible in the transfer market.

Did Aston Villa nearly sign Emile Smith Rowe?

Rewind to the summer of 2021, and Arsenal starlet Smith-Rowe was the playmaker wanted at Villa Park when the team was led by Dean Smith.

It was reported at the time that the Midlands side had two bids rejected for the midfielder, who was a 20-year-old at the time, with the highest offer being in the region of £30m.

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe.

This summer, it was deja vu at Villa Park, with Emery speculated to be eyeing a reunion with SmithRowe, as talkSPORT claimed that Villa were back on the Englishman’s tail.

Why didn’t Aston Villa sign Smith Rowe?

As well as Villa, Chelsea were linked to the 23-year-old, however, the outcome has remained the same as it did in 2021, with the Hale End graduate remaining in north London.

Arsenal were adamant on both occasions that their number 10 was not for sale, with him being a favoured member of the squad having been at the club since the age of just 10 years old.

It wasn’t a case of the Gunners wanting more funds, but more the case that the attacker was not permitted to leave the club due to how highly he is regarded in north London.

What is Smith-Rowe doing now?

It was understandable why Smith was eyeing the Arsenal youngster in 2021, as the midfielder contributed to 14 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions in the 2020/21 campaign, scoring seven and assisting seven.

The interest in the Englishman seemed to inspire his place in the squad at the Emirates, as the season after, he became a regular squad member for his boyhood club.

In 33 Premier League appearances, the Londoner scored ten league goals, as well as registering two assists to showcase just the level he could operate at if given the chance.

The 2021/22 campaign marked a high point in his career, and unfortunately, the youngster has been unable to reach such levels since then due to a lack of game time and opportunity in the squad.

While it’s celebrated for those associated with Arsenal that Mikel Arteta has discovered his best XI, Smith Rowe is an outsider to the favoured line-up, having made just 15 appearances since his impressive 2021/22 season.

This term so far, the 23-year-old has been an unused substitute in all five of the Gunners’ Premier League games, making his unavailability in the transfer window all the more frustrating.

What is Smith-Rowe’s market value?

Villa bid £30m for the midfielder in 2021, which was a fair offer considering that the England U21 star had an expected transfer value (xTV) of €21m (£18m) and was in the process of signing a contract extension with his club, via Football Transfers.

Emile Smith Rowe of Arsenal

The academy graduate’s value hit a high the following summer, as it soared to €39.8m (£34m), however with his game time restricted due to competition in the current squad, his expected value has decreased dramatically.

At present, Smith-Rowe is valued at just €13.6m (£11.7m), telling of how disused his services are in north London of late.

What are Emile Smith Rowe's best qualities?

The summer that Smith was pushing to sign Smith-Rowe, Villa replenished their creative talents and the loss of Jack Grealish with Emiliano Buendia instead, who posed as an alternative to the Englishman positionally.

While it was evident that Villa would’ve preferred to have equipped both players to their squad, the Argentine was the only player out of the two to be delivered to the Midlands, making the £38m move from Norwich.

Former Norwich attacker Emi Buendia.

In hindsight, signing the Englishman may have been the better choice with the knowledge of how the former Canaries ace’s Villa career has gone so far, with Smith Rowe having the capability to thrive to a higher level in the top-flight.

The season after the interest, Smith-Rowe had a hand in 12 goals for Arsenal, while Buendia contributed towards ten for Villa, scoring four to the Gunners star’s ten that campaign.

Away from goal contributions, the England U21 international put in some more assured performances on the pitch compared to Buendia, as highlighted by his averages that campaign.

As per FBref, Smith-Rowe registered a pass completion rate of 82.9% per 90 as well as recording an average of 3.05 progressive carries per 90 for his boyhood club, showcasing his strengths in ball carrying and distribution.

Such traits saw him lauded and notably compared to a former Villan. Indeed, talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino said in 2021 that the Gunners starlet has "got that Jack Grealish about him."

Buendia happened to fall short in both decimals during his debut season at Villa Park, maintaining a pass completion rate of only 78.8% and making an average of 1.90 progressive carries per 90; hardly a talent worthy of replacing Grealish.

Lauded as “incredibly prolific” by talent scout Jacek Kulig for his scoring rate of 0.47 non-penalty goals per 90 in the 2021/22 campaign, Smith Rowe showed Villa just what they were missing, with the Villans’ new arrival averaging just 0.19 per 90.

Following his four goals in his debut season, Buendia has only added five more to his tally in the Premier League, with his level of performance in the Championship not yet translated to the top flight.

Smith was unfortunate not to have obtained Smith Rowe, who was simply not for sale at the time of his interest, however, with hindsight in mind, the Midlands side will look back wishing that the situation had been different at the time.

Arsenal Could Sign "Magic" £50m Ansu Fati Alternative Before Deadline

Arsenal may have seemingly tied up all of their transfer business for the summer, but with deadline day fast approaching, Mikel Arteta could be swept up in the late drama to push for a few late acquisitions…

Is Ansu Fati leaving Barcelona?

Having welcomed Kai Havertz to the Emirates as their first signing of the window, Jurrien Timber, Declan Rice and David Raya all followed suit by joining the north London revolution which has ambitions of claiming the Premier League title this season.

However, their stuttering start to the campaign has immediately drawn questions regarding their capability to achieve such a feat, with a real lack of creativity and cutting edge leading to three unconvincing results against far weaker opposition.

Therefore, perhaps there might be one final move to be made, adding another attack-minded winger to round off a squad suitably bolstered.

Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…

Although their mooted interest in Barcelona's Ansu Fati clearly came to nothing, given his move to Brighton and Hove Albion is now imminent, perhaps they could instead seek to reignite another rumour by plucking Kaoru Mitoma from the side who snagged the Spaniard from them.

After all, the blow would be softened by their brand new signing and would be sufficiently renumerated given his reported £50m price tag.

How good is Kauro Mitoma?

Whilst the 20-year-old dynamo boasts immense potential, with a wealth of experience far beyond many within his age category, there remain a few key factors that could suggest Fati might not have been the right fit for what Arteta is trying to build.

After all, his move is a straight loan deal, meaning after one year he will depart the Emirates, offering now long-term value to a project that is nearly four years in the making.

Not only that, but the injury history of the Spain international is highly questionable, and should those issues flare up once again, it could turn into a very expensive headache for the 41-year-old head coach, who already has spent big this summer.

Meanwhile, Mitoma has more than earned his status as one of the Premier League's most dangerous wingers, racking up 36 appearances in the competition after a stellar last season that has caught the eye.

The 26-year-old is at a fine age to both earn success now whilst also continuing his growth, and did score ten and assist a further eight across all competitions last term, firing the Seagulls into Europe and giving their fans a trip to Wembley as they reached the FA Cup semi-final – journalist Dan George sought to outline his success from that year, noting:

"Special football player! What a season Kaoru Mitoma is having".

kaoru-mitoma-4

This form has clearly been translated into the new term too, given he already has three goal contributions in as many league matches so far.

To see writer Seb Stafford-Bloor having branded him "outrageous" and "magic" should come as no surprise, as when compared to other wingers across Europe, Mitoma sits in the top 5% for progressive carries per 90, and the top 2% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90, via FBref.

He is a consistent goal threat with the ability to score and create for his team, and although Fati already boasts 112 appearances for the Catalan giants, his seven goals and four assists in LaLiga mark a worse return than his alternative from last year, in a division ranked well below the English top flight on UEFA's coefficient list, despite being second.

Whilst Fati will likely mark a fine addition to Roberto De Zerbi's team, it does mark an opportunity for Arteta to secure an alternative by now prying Mitoma from them at the eleventh hour.

Everton: Dyche Eyeing "Special" £30m Richarlison Replacement

We find ourselves two games into the new Premier League season and Everton already look set to teeter along the perilous tightrope of relegation.

The Toffees have only spent €12.5m (£10.6m) on Youseff Chermiti, whilst also bringing in the veteran Ashley Young on free transfer, and Arnaut Danjuma and Jack Harrison on loan.

However, Sean Dyche’s men find themselves at the bottom of the table and crying out for some offensive reinforcements to reverse their ill fortune.

As a result, Everton are linked to one of France’s most exciting and promising talents…

What’s the latest Everton transfer news?

According to Le Parisien, Everton are ‘still talking’ with Paris Saint-Germain striker Hugo Ekitike and his entourage about a possible summer transfer.

It is understood that the 21-year-old has known for two weeks that he has no future at the French juggernaut and needs to find a new club before the window shuts.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

But, AC Milan, Lyon, and West Ham are all interested in Ekitike, with the latter having positioned themselves ‘more concretely’ in the last few days.

The Irons sporting director Tim Steidten has reportedly held a ‘positive’ meeting with the forward and his agents.

Earlier in the window, Fabrizio Romano revealed that the Merseysiders were in talks over a loan deal with a mandatory buy-option in the region of €35m (£30m). But, as has been reiterated, there are many clubs keen on the youngster so Everton must accelerate their attempts to conclude this transfer.

Would Hugo Ekitike be a good signing for Everton?

Ekitike, who has been described as “special” by former manager Oscar Garcia, has demonstrated across two full seasons of relatively regular Ligue 1 football that he is a useful and dangerous asset.

In 52 appearances in this division, he has scored 13 times and crafted eight assists, playing as a nimble, hard-working, and effervescent focal point.

The most eye-catching part of his short career was the 2021/22 season with Reims, where Ekitike netted ten goals in 15 league starts.

But, this didn’t come as a surprise to some, with Reims reserve team coach Franck Chalencon lauding the talent:

“Very young, we saw a huge potential, something natural, with a feeling for scoring a goal.

“His main quality? His instinct for goal. It's very rare that Hugo plays a game without creating a chance himself at any occasion. In front of the goal, his ratio is excellent. But he's not only a striker, he can play on the wing, too. Very technical.”

Last summer, the Frenchman secured a loan move to PSG with a €35m (£30m) option to turn the deal into a permanent transfer.

In his first season at the Parc des Princes, he recorded eight goal contributions in 32 matches, and despite joining permanently, he looks set to be offloaded.

hugo-ekitike-everton-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

Ekitike’s signing would finally be a replacement for Richarlison, who in four years at Goodison Park, established himself as a firm fan-favourite thanks to his dogged work rate, endless running, and eye for goal.

Similarly to Ekitike, he doesn’t possess a mind-boggling goal-scoring record, with 53 goals in 152 appearances for the Toffees, but he was massively important in the effort to avoid relegation.

Former Everton and current Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti once claimed that Richarlison is a “modern and complete forward, not very sharp on his feet but coordinated and with great synchronization in the area.”

Therefore, Ekitike could be the long-awaited heir to Richarlison’s loveable, influential, and dynamic throne.

The Merseyside outfit are desperate for this dimension in attack and Ekitike could be the one to provide this for Dyche, though time is running out in the transfer window to finally land the true heir to Richarlison's throne at Goodison Park.
