"Big" Daniel Farke contract update emerges at Leeds amid Championship surge

Leeds United are absolutely flying right now. A resounding 4-0 win over Swansea City on Tuesday night was their seventh in a row in the Championship, and they've kept four consecutive clean sheets too.

After Southampton's 25-game unbeaten streak came to an end with a 3-1 defeat at Bristol City, the Whites have now climbed into the Championship promotion places, albeit having played a game more. When previously they had looked destined for the playoffs, they now have a real chance of avoiding that jeopardy.

Leeds could soon bin £45k-p/w outcast who earns more than Ampadu

Leeds United will have to be eventually cut-throat when it comes to this high earner’s future.

ByKelan Sarson Feb 15, 2024

It's shaping up to be a dream start to a new era at Elland Road following the takeover by 49ers Enterprises last summer and the appointment of Daniel Farke as permanent manager.

49ers prepared to give Farke a pay rise

Now, according to Football Insider, Leeds, and by extension the 49ers, are ready to offer Farke a new contract if they achieve promotion this season, even though he still has more than three years to run on his existing deal. The 49ers have clearly been very impressed by what they've seen from the German so far.

Daniel Farke.

Farke could be in line to get a "big" pay rise in West Yorkshire as part of the potential extension, which would be a significant show of faith in his ability to keep them in the Premier League.

"Aggressive" Farke has been a real hit at Leeds

While some would say that relegated sides are bound to be among the favourites to get promoted, Farke still walked into a difficult situation at Leeds. The 2022/23 season had descended into a mess, with three different managers – Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce – taking turns in the hot seat. What's more, while the Whites posted the third-highest outlay in the division during the transfer window, they also lost 16 players, including Tyler Adams, Rodrigo, Robin Koch, Max Wober, Luis Sinisterra, Marc Roca, Rasmus Kristensen and Brenden Aaronson. In the end, they virtually broke even with a net spend of just £2m.

Farke, though, has gone from strength to strength as the Leeds boss, winning two of the last three Manager of the Month awards. He's done so while implementing a desirable and exciting style of play too, with Leeds inside the top three for possession (57.3%), expected goals per 90 (1.79), expected goals against per 90 (0.8) and tackles in the attacking third (90). It is, in the words of journalist Josh Bunting, an "aggressive" approach that's "full of energy".

The 47-year-old is something of a promotion specialist after taking Norwich up to the top flight on two occasions, but his record in the Premier League may be a slight cause for concern. In his first season (19/20), the Canaries posted the sixth-lowest points tally in the league's history (21), and in his second (21/22), he only lasted until November before he was sacked, with just five points on the board from 11 games. Clearly, there's confidence that he's learned from his previous mistakes and can succeed at the third time of asking, providing things go well over the coming months.

West Brom could forget Sarmiento by loaning in “outstanding” star

West Bromwich Albion's squad situation at this point in time is less than ideal, with injuries mounting up, a number of first-team players leaving for the African Cup of Nations soon and now the development of Jeremy Sarmiento being recalled hitting the Baggies square in the face.

The news of Sarmiento returning to Brighton would have stung even more knowing that the Seagulls were just preparing to offload their South American winger out again to Ipswich Town, the Tractor Boys benefiting from West Brom's dire predicament.

Carlos Corberan won't move away from utilising the loan market completely this January however, with the West Midlands side interested in securing another loan move according to reports to attempt to soften the blow of Sarmiento exiting.

West Brom transfer latest – another loan deal

TEAMtalk have recently reported that the promotion-chasing Baggies are going after Dexter Lembikisa in January, the current Rotherham United man excelling with the Millers away from parent club Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan.

Yet, West Brom could come in this month and offer Lembikisa a better loan move where he could help Corberan's men clinch promotion to the Premier League instead of playing his part in Rotherham staving off relegation.

The Championship playoff hopefuls aren't the only interested party though, with TEAMTalk further elaborating that Middlesbrough and Ipswich are also keen whilst the Tractor Boys' arch nemesis Norwich City have joined the queue too for his services.

West Brom will hope they can land Lembikisa to get a tetchy Baggies fanbase back on side, the masses at the Hawthorns growing increasingly worried at the threadbare nature of the squad before them.

Dexter Lembikisa's style of play

Lembikisa would push the likes of Darnell Furlong and Conor Townsend all the way on his arrival to the West Midlands to stake a claim for a first-team spot, equally adept at playing down both flanks as an adaptable full-back presence.

The current Millers man is also more than capable of venturing forward and playing further up the field if needed, scoring once so far this campaign for Rotherham under the previous tenure of Matt Taylor by confidently firing home on the volley against Norwich City.

Lembikisa's form has taken somewhat of a nosedive in recent weeks, as his Rotherham side continue to struggle to beat the drop, but Taylor showered the explosive 20-year-old with praise after that stunning strike – the ex-Millers boss describing Lembikisa as 'outstanding' when speaking to BirminghamLive.

Wolves pathways manager Steve Davis also described the Jamaican full-back as a 'confident boy' via the Premier League club's website when Lembikisa joined the Millers, the young defender hoping he can excel with a team higher up the Championship if rumours are correct and justify the confidence he possesses in his own ability too.

West Brom need all the bodies they can get into the building at this moment in time – and in Lembikisa – the Baggies would get a raw, exciting talent that could see the second-tier side go from being passive in games to suddenly upping the tempo and terrifying teams.

Losing Sarmiento will hurt those at the Hawthorns for the time being, but by signing this exciting 20-year-old defender this month, could get the ball rolling with many more purchases coming in after to breathe life back into a depleted West Brom group.

Tom Blundell called up for Christchurch Test as cover

Injured players BJ Watling and Kane Williamson will have to prove fitness by Friday for the third Test

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Mar-2019Wellington wicketkeeper Tom Blundell has been called up to the New Zealand squad as cover for BJ Watling for the third Test against Bangladesh at Hagley Oval. Watling and captain Kane Williamson, who have sustained injuries, will have to prove their fitness by Friday to be available for selection as the match starts on Thursday.Blundell, who had made a century on debut in the first Test against West Indies in December 2017, is set to join the squad in Christchurch on Wednesday as back-up for Watling, who had strained his hamstring before play on the final day of the second Test in Wellington. It was Watling’s injury that made way for Blundell’s debut back in the 2017 series against West Indies, which was also the latter’s last Test appearance.Blundell is coming on the back of an unbeaten century and 52 against Otago in the latest round of the Plunket Shield. He has scored 240 runs in four matches at an average of 48 this season. Overall, Blundell has played two Tests and three T20Is so far, having last played for New Zealand in February 2018 against Australia in Sydney. On the fifth day of the Wellington Test, substitute Peter Bocock had kept wickets for the side as the management did not want to risk fielding the injured Watling or move back-up Tom Latham from the slip cordon.Coach Gary Stead had earlier hinted that uncapped Will Young, who is in the Test squad, could replace Williamson, who has sustained a grade one tear to his left pectoral minor muscle. Tim Southee stood in at Basin Reserve when Williamson had briefly left the field for medical attention. Stead also said the captain has sustained a rare – albeit minor – injury.”It’s a pretty rare injury – they’ve only seen I think five in the world before,” Stead said. “I know that the physio staff were saying ‘We’ll make this a case study’ because it is so rare.”

Stuart Broad deserves credit for putting in 'hard yards', says James Anderson

After consulting Anderson and Richard Hadlee, Broad has shortened his run-up by five yards in a bid to improve his rhythm and bowl with a higher action

George Dobell in Barbados20-Jan-2019James Anderson has “not seen anyone work as hard on their game” as Stuart Broad over the last couple of years.Anderson and Broad go into the Barbados Test with 998 Test wickets between them over the course of their careers. But while Broad, at 32, is four years younger than Anderson, it is his form that has caused more concern over the last couple of years. While Anderson has gone from strength to strength, compensating for his somewhat diminished pace with his control and range of skills, Broad has, at times, looked as if he were in gradual decline. He has only taken one five-for since January 2016 and, in both the 2017 and the 2017-18 seasons, had a bowling average a fraction above 33.Neither the decline in pace nor movement were dramatic but, somewhere along the way, the remarkable hot streaks of wickets that characterise Broad’s career disappeared. He was left out of the side for the first two Tests in Sri Lanka and is no longer guaranteed to take the new ball alongside Anderson.ALSO READ: Seamers to the fore as WI put up their DukesSuch is his desire to extend his career, however, Broad has recognised the signs and resolved to improve. After consulting Anderson and Richard Hadlee – a Nottinghamshire team-mate of his father, Chris – Broad has shortened his run-up by five yards in a bid to improve his rhythm and bowl with a higher action. Writing in the recently, he explained that “standing taller in delivery… should provide me with extra bounce”.Alongside some alterations he had made to his wrist position, Broad hopes the changes will both make him more potent and extend his career by several years. The early signs are promising. Despite not taking any wickets in the final Test of the Sri Lanka series in Colombo, Broad bowled with impressive pace and saw two chances put down off him in the slips. Both in Colombo and in the warm-up games in Barbados, he appeared to gain a little of the away swing that has been largely absent in recent times. He warns that the changes may not completely bed in for a few months – the Ashes remain his main target – but it will be intriguing to see how he fares in the Caribbean, where he has a Test bowling average of 31.22.Certainly Anderson is impressed. “Probably since Australia, I’ve not seen anyone work as hard as he has on their game,” Anderson said. “It’s a credit to him. He’s put so many hard yards in, not just on his run-up but on his action and trying to swing the ball away again.”I do think the run-up has looked really good here. He still has the same snap, the same momentum going through the crease. For me, it’s all about the last six yards, building that momentum up to the crease. He can definitely have the same oomph.”And it might just get another couple of years out of him. I think part of him is thinking ‘why have I not done this sooner?'”

Both Broad and Anderson are likely to be offered more encouragement in the Caribbean than was the case in Sri Lanka. Anderson admitted he felt “like a spare part” in that series, struggling to extract any movement from the ball or life from the surfaces. He claimed just one wicket in the two Tests in which he appeared. But, with a specially-designed Dukes ball and the prospect of pitches offering at least a little more assistance, Anderson feels the seamers should be “excited to bowl”.”I think the bowlers have really enjoyed their first week here,” Anderson said. “The Dukes ball has been moving around a bit and swung for quite a considerable amount of time. So that’s encouragement.”The wickets in Sri Lanka were flat and the wickets here could be flat, but at least there’s a glimmer of hope for us seam bowlers. There might be a little bit of swing through the air and that just keeps you interested. It feels you can actually make an impact on the game. It just makes you excited to bowl and really look forward to playing.”There should be no danger of England underestimating West Indies, though. Having won only one series in the Caribbean in 50-years – the 2004 series in which Anderson was a non-playing squad member – they are under no illusions about the task in front of them; a factor Anderson believes is made clear in the eyes of the West Indies team once the games begin.”Whenever we come here you get the feeling that West Indies really want to beat England,” Anderson said. “It’s something that’s been ingrained in them, especially in the past when England have suffered heavy defeats.”You can see it in the players’ eyes when you play against them. And that means we’ve got to be on top form to be able to try and challenge them.”

Henry Davids lifts Paarl Rocks off the bottom

Opener smashes 25-ball 46 in a rain-shortened game to set the tone for the bowlers in a nine-over shootout

The Report by Shashank Kishore28-Nov-2018LatinContent/Getty Images

A frustrating rain-filled evening in Durban eventually turned joyful for Paarl Rocks as they lifted themselves off the bottom of the points table.Paarl were denied their regular complement of overs, thanks to as many as three interruptions. The third break that lasted close to an hour reduced the contest to nine-overs-a-side.Progressing serenely at 47 without loss in 5.4 overs before the third rain interval, opener Henry Davids teed off in style to hit two fours and a six off the first four deliveries upon resumption. Paarl smashed 51 off the remaining 3.2 overs to finish on 98 for 2, with the target then re-calibrated to 113. This proved 32 too many for the home team.Durban Heat lost Hashim Amla off the first delivery in their chase, Temba Bavuma off the fifth and Heinrich Klaasen off the fifteenth. That, right there, was game over.Bjorn Fortuin, the left-arm spinner, was the hero with the ball. He removed Amla with a slider that drifted in to trap him in front of middle and leg as he played all around it. Bavuma toe-ended a slap to Faf du Plessis at cover, while Klaasen mistimed a heave to midwicket off David Wiese.David Miller blasted 22, but it looked like he was just one mishit away from doom and gloom. When he fell, it soon soon became a question of reducing the margin of defeat to ensure the net-run-rate didn’t take a massive dent.Durban managed just four boundaries in the first four overs. On the night, this simply wasn’t good enough.Among the positives they’ll want to look forward with hope was the return of designated captain Albie Morkel. Initially unsure of playing because of a niggle, Morkel returned after scans on his right wrist allayed fears of an injury. In his previous outing prior to the rain-off fixture, Morkel copped a blow at the non-striker’s end when Vernon Philander smacked the ball back ferociously to hit him while taking evasive action. This forced him to retire hurt. On Wednesday, the second ball he faced was a fierce front-of-square pull that showed the injury wasn’t as serious as initially perceived to be.However, on the face of an ever-escalating run rate, Morkel managed just the one six in his nine-ball stay, eventually caught behind trying to cut Tabraiz Shamsi, who brought out the ‘telephone’ celebration by removing his right boot, dusting the sole off before bringing it to his hear as if to say ‘hello’ to the dressing room.It was that kind of night for Paarl, there was little or no pressure for the bowlers halfway into the innings. Philander briefly thrilled with his big hits, but the result seemed a foregone conclusion.

Godleman's hundred soothes Derbyshire amid mystery of two Ben Slaters

Sussex claimed late wickets to keep themselves in the hunt for a first innings lead on a day where Ben Slater needed to be in two places at once

David Hopps20-Aug-20181:43

Moeen and Mitchell leave Yorkshire feeling Toxic

ScorecardIt can confidently be stated by all present at Hove that Ben Slater is still a Derbyshire cricketer. For a couple more days at least. The two electronic scoreboards displayed his name in block capitals. Mike Charman, who doubles up as Sussex’s scorer and PA announcer, introduced him to the crease with a characteristic flourish and when a dodgy drive at a wide one saw him fall at third slip, his 24 was duly added to his Derbyshire career record.Odd therefore that Nottinghamshire’s website should already be proudly announcing the completion of his transfer. Apparently, he was available for selection for the current Championship match against Hampshire, only he wasn’t really because he was batting for Derbyshire at Hove. There was a wonderfully ironic quote about how he couldn’t wait to get started at Trent Bridge; that much was abundantly clear. How had Notts jumped the gun? Had they been hacked? Could they somehow blame it on the Russians? Nobody could be sure, but roughly the time that the story was removed, and showed up as Error 404, Slater was committing Error 24. County cricket is in a state of change, but to find two Ben Slaters operating in parallel worlds was a little disturbing.More pertinently for Notts, whose record of signing top-order batsmen in the past 10 years has hardly been one of unbroken success, the signing of Slater would be a gamble. Two of his three Championship hundreds for Derbyshire came in a single match when they thrashed a pitiful Leicestershire by 408 runs. That leaves one other Championship hundred in four years. On such days, to be captain of Derbyshire can feel a thankless task. But Billy Godleman, who has had a good white-ball season but who was only averaging 13 in the Championship, responded with 122 from 196 balls before he was bowled by a legspinner from Luke Wells – Wells’ second ball – which turned through the gate.Godleman is hardly the most elegant batsman around, prospering by a series of shovelled cuts – two in the first over after lunch off Jofra Archer, flipping Danny Briggs for six over the short boundary on the scoreboard side, and hacking Chris Jordan through point to reach his first Championship hundred of the season. He responded by crossing himself, probably praying that there wasn’t another one of him playing for Nottinghamshire. The most stylish knock was played, as so often, by Wayne Madsen, who is another batsman who might be on his way and who fell for 72 to the first ball after tea trying to cut Jordan, a fair-enough shot, badly executed. Faced by Sussex’s 440, Derbyshire were 285 for 2 before Godleman fell, but they lost three wickets in a final session where Archer and Jordan set the tone in the first hour with Sussex’s most disciplined phase of the day.Sean Ervine, on loan from Hampshire, was run out for 2 by Ollie Robinson from mid-on (a good but marginal call by the umpire), and nightwatchman Hardus Viljoen pushed forward with consummate sobriety to the last ball of the day but was bowled as Briggs turned one past his outside edge.At 315 for 5, Derbyshire trailed at the close by 125 and Sussex, second in the table, had come out even from a demanding day. Alex Hughes, 60 not out overnight, only his second fifty of the season, carries many of Derbyshire’s hopes on a slow surface which neutered Sussex’s seam attack but which is offering some turn for the spinners.
