Aston Villa have interest in signing "prolific" star who’d be Coutinho 2.0

Aston Villa have been simply exceptional this season and despite their 0-0 draw with Everton on Sunday, sit third in the top-flight.

Unai Emery has crafted a perfectly balanced unit that has earned a top-four spot in the Premier League but they won't rest on their laurels heading into the second half of the campaign.

Indeed, the Spanish the boss will still look to improve his squad in January.

Aston Villa want to sign Premier League playmaker

According to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook via GIVEMESPORT, Villa are still keen to sign Emile Smith Rowe.

Speaking to the publication, the reporter stated: "I'm keen to see what they [Arsenal] do with Smith Rowe because I think Aston Villa’s interest is still there.

"We know that Arsenal like Douglas Luiz, but Villa aren’t going to let him go at this moment in time because they’re competing for the top four themselves.”

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe.

The 6-foot star is seemingly surplus to requirements at Arsenal, and they could look to move him on to fund other deals.

A move this winter is likely, with the Gunners midfielder keen to get more minutes on the field.

ByCharlie Smith Feb 1, 2024 How Emile Smith Rowe compares to Philippe Coutinho

Philippe Coutinho’s six-month loan spell at Villa in the 2021/22 season was a success, but since moving to the Midlands permanently for £17m in the next summer, the move could be described as a disaster.

Aston Villa's PhilippeCoutinhoin action with Lazio's Felipe Anderson

The Brazilian featured 20 times last campaign, but he only scored once after a debut term where he registered eight goal involvements in 19 outings for the Villans. Fast forward to today, and he’s on loan to Al Duhail in Qatar.

The former Liverpool star's profile has yet to be replaced by Emery at Villa, however, Smith Rowe could just reignite that creative spark in the side, as coincidentally, he plays like Coutinho, as scout Jacek Kulig once referred to.

Unfortunately for Smith Rowe, he has been unable to showcase his true ability due to what seems like a never-ending injury cycle, but he could reunite with Emery at Villa, the man who handed him his Arsenal debut in 2018.

The aforementioned Kulig has labelled Smith Rowe as “prolific,” and his attacking numbers from a breakout campaign in 2021/22 where he bagged ten Premier League goals showcase that.

The England U21 star is also a creator who likes to take on responsibility in the attacking third, where he can connect the midfield to attack, using his close dribbling and ball-carrying to open up the opposition (see table below). This is extremely similar to Coutinho, who displayed those attributes during his 20-goal contribution 2016/17 Premier League campaign at Liverpool.

Signing a goal-scoring midfielder would significantly improve Villa’s ability to score by giving them an additional threat who can crash the box. This would be particularly useful when facing a low block, which Emery has struggled against this season, as shown by the narrow 1-0 win over Middlesbrough and the 1-1 draw against Sheffield United.

Smith Rowe mainly featured as the left midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 variant during his most impressive season, and due to his technical ability, he could feature as the inverted left midfielder in the Jacob Ramsey role or as the second striker behind Ollie Watkins at Villa. Due to his intelligence and incredible link-up play, the Arsenal star could form a dangerous relationship alongside the ex-Brentford man.

The reunion between Smith Rowe and Emery could be magical, and the Spaniard would provide the 23-year-old with the perfect opportunity to revive his career.

Stefano Sensi waiting to board flight as report reveals Leicester hold up

Ten points clear at the top of the Championship, Leicester City have never been in a position to panic over incomings during this month's transfer window, but with the deadline fast approaching, a concerning hold up has emerged in a race against time to land their main target.

Leicester transfer news

One name that has been consistently mentioned throughout the January transfer window regarding Leicester has been Inter Milan's Stefano Sensi. The midfielder has looked all but a guaranteed arrival at times, with previous reports suggesting that the move was set to be finalised. With under 48 hours left until the January transfer window slams shut, however, the Foxes are yet to get their man in what could be a concern for Enzo Maresca.

As the January transfer window closes, FFC has you covered for every in and out involving your club in the EFL Championship.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

Maresca was asked about Sensi earlier this month, saying via BBC Sport: "I always said the same – when you are strong and can get stronger, it’s better. The only thing I can say about Sensi is that I know him and he’s a player I really like. We are not allowed to do something. We have to sell to do something."

Of course, since then Leicester have once again got Luke Thomas off their books and, whilst the deal is only a loan rather than a permanent switch to Middlesbrough, it could have at least made some room in Maresca's squad. However, it remains to be seen whether Sensi will be the man to take that place.

According to Gazzetta, Leicester are yet to sign the documents to complete a deal for Sensi, in a twist which has put the transfer on standby. Sensi is reportedly ready and waiting to travel to England to complete a medical and put pen to paper on a deal, but without the documents not signed at the Foxes end, he's currently going nowhere with time running out in the window.

If the Foxes were to get as far as reportedly agreeing a deal worth €2m and then fail to welcome Sensi, then it may be seen as a major failure from all involved at The King Power this month.

Leicester must complete Sensi deal

Whilst the deal is only on standby, Leicester are now facing a race against the clock. There's still an inevitability to the deal, given how close things are, but any further delays could yet see Sensi remain an Inter Milan player for the rest of the season. Sensi's stats when at his best show just how important it is that the Foxes get a deal over the line.

Looking ahead to Leicester's potential place in the Premier League next season, Sensi could quickly prove to be quite the long-term investment for Maresca and co. The midfielder has plenty of top-flight experience in Italy and could translate that into the Premier League, as the Foxes look to survive at the first time of asking and more.

Ibrahim Osman to West Ham update: Moyes hit with immediate stumbling block

West Ham United completed their first signing of the January transfer window last week as they unveiled England international Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City, but their next move has now taken a hit.

West Ham's transfer plans

The Sun reveal that Hammers boss David Moyes now has his eyes set on the signing of a winger to bolster his attacking options before the deadline passes. He wants another wide forward to compete with the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen at the top end of the pitch during the second half of the season.

This report states that the club will not pursue a deal to sign English centre-forward Callum Wilson from Premier League rivals Newcastle United, as they are prioritising a swoop for a wide player.

Ibrahim Osman transfer update

The Sun add that West Ham are keen on a deal to sign FC Nordsjaelland forward Ibrahim Osman and have already made their first offer to secure his services. They swooped in with a bid of £16m to sign the talented young attacker, but it has already been turned down by the Danish side, who are looking for a fee of £18m.

The Hammers have failed in their initial approach to snap up the 19-year-old whiz, who is valued at £18m plus bonuses and a sell-on clause by his current club.

However, West Ham have not been deterred as the report claims that they will still try to land Osman before the window slams shut on Thursday. It also states that fellow Premier League sides Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford are also interested in the teenage dynamo, which means that Moyes could face late competition for the exciting gem.

There is no mention of whether or not the Hammers are now prepared to up their offer to the £18m that Nordsjaelland want for their prized asset, though there are reports of alternative targets, with the Hammers also eyeing former Celtic forward Jota.

On paper, it appears to be a signing that would firmly be for the future as the young magician has not been outstanding in the Danish top-flight so far this season.

As you can see from the table above, Osman has been solid, if unspectacular, with his return in front of goal as he has not provided impressively consistent quality as a scorer or a creator of goals. Six West Ham players have scored more than one goal and three Hammers stars have produced more than four assists in the Premier League so far this season.

This suggests that the promising talent would not be an outstanding option for the Scottish manager for goals or assists even if he could translate his current form over to the English top-flight, of which there is no guarantee.

However, at the age of 19, Osman, who was dubbed "electric" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has plenty of time on his hands to develop and improve over the years to come and Moyes could look at this potential deal as one that has long-term benefits for West Ham.

He may not make a huge impact on the pitch in the short-term but could grow into an important player for the club further down the line if he can build on his current promising displays, which is why this could be an exciting addition for the Hammers.

Jurgen Klopp: Net worth, salary, wife, teeth, age, news, updates & more

Jurgen Klopp shocked the world of football when he announced that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season after almost a decade in charge at Anfield. The German has done it all on Merseyside and leaves as the Reds' most successful manager in their Premier League history.

But who is Jurgen Klopp? How many trophies has he won? And could he return to management next season? We at Football FanCast have gathered everything you need to know about the Reds boss is right here.

Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

With Liverpool top of the Premier League and still in all three cup competitions, you'd be forgiven for thinking that when Klopp revealed that he had an announcement, it would be centred around a possible contract extension. That proved anything but the case, however, as he instead revealed his forthcoming exit.

Speaking to Liverpool's official media channels, Klopp detailed the reason behind his decision: "It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again."

Jurgen Klopp news & rumours

Julian Nagelsmann managing Bayern Munich

Whilst Klopp was quick to rule out a return to management, saying "if you ask me, ‘Will you ever work as a manager again?’ I would say now no," the rumours have still arrived.

Julian Nagelsmann's contract with the German national team is up after this summer's Euros, creating the need for another candidate to step into the hot seat. And given that Klopp has been linked with the Germany position before, only to turn it down due to his Liverpool commitments, they could return with another attempt – this time without the obstacle of his Anfield role.

Nagelsmann, of course, has been a name mentioned as a possible candidate to replace Klopp at Liverpool in what would be a convenient swap for all parties. That said, as of right now, it is Reds legend and Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso who reportedly tops FSG's shortlist, having already made contact.

Jurgen Klopp's salary and net worth

Jurgen Klopp with John Henry.

FSG got a return on their investment throughout Klopp's time at the club, winning every major honour available. Klopp's wages reportedly sit at a whopping £15m a year, which is ironically only second to Manchester City's Pep Guardiola in what will feel all too frustratingly familiar for the 56-year-old.

Klopp's net worth, meanwhile, has unsurprisingly gone up and up since arriving at Anfield – and reportedly now stands at around £39m, according to Essentially Sports.

Jurgen Klopp's net spend

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

The fact that Liverpool have kept up with Manchester City throughout Klopp's tenure speaks volumes about the impact that the Anfield legend has had on the club. That is then made even more impressive by Liverpool's net spend compared to the rest of the Premier League's 'big six' since Klopp's arrival in 2015.

Manchester United

£888m

Chelsea

£835m

Arsenal

£696m

Manchester City

£692m

Tottenham Hotspur

£484m

Liverpool

£254m

Astonishingly, it is Manchester United who top the list, with a net spend of over double Liverpool's in the last nine years. Compare silverware during that time, and it says a lot about just how poorly the Red Devils have spent their money compared to Klopp at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp's age and height

Now 56 years old, it's no surprise that Klopp doesn't have the energy that he once did to coach his 'heavy metal' football. Although it seems unlikely that we'll see the German in a dugout anytime soon, he could yet make his return to management and follow in the footsteps of the likes of Arsene Wenger, who left Arsenal at 68 years old.

Standing at 6 foot 3, the former Dortmund man could have perhaps made for an emergency centre-back option amid Liverpool's infamous shortage in the 2020/21 campaign, which saw the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho form makeshift partnerships at times.

Jurgen Klopp's wife

Ulla Klopp at Liverpool.

An underrated member of Klopp's backroom team is, of course, his wife – Ulla Sandrock. Liverpool fans reportedly have her to thank for keeping hold of their legendary boss for what could prove to be a historic season. According to Jonathan Northcroft of The Times, Klopp came close to quitting midway through last season, before being convinced by his wife to stay put.

Back at the summit, the Liverpool boss may well be glad to have listened ahead of what could be the perfect ending.

Jurgen Klopp's teeth

Jurgen Klopp

Everyone is used to seeing Jurgen Klopp's pearly whites by now, but that's not how it has always been.

The German did indeed have his teeth fixed and, reportedly, veneers implanted.

Interestingly, it was Roberto Firmino who inspired Klopp to get them done, as the Liverpool boss went to Dr Robbie Hughes of Dental Excellence, who also did the Brazilian's.

He stated: "Working with Jurgen Klopp came about because he saw Roberto's new teeth and decided he wanted to do something. When Jurgen came to see us, he basically just said he liked Roberto's teeth, that he wouldn't want to go quite as white, but he liked his teeth."

Although, Klopp came out and denied this claim and stated that he did not want to copy Firmino but was forced to have them fixed after an initial medical problem that required antibiotics.

Clubs Jurgen Klopp played for

Jurgen Klopp for Liverpool.

Klopp the manager will go down in history, but Klopp the player will likely go down as something to forget. Not exactly famous for his technical ability on the pitch, the Liverpool legend played for Tus Ergenzingen, Eintracht Frankfurt II, Vik. Sindlingen, Rot-Weiss Frankfurt and most famously Mainz 05, who he would go on to manage. He does, at least, have one famous moment to look back on in his playing career:

Though, it must be said, Klopp will still be remembered for the heavy metal football that he orchestrated rather than the one that he played as a right-back.

Clubs managed by Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp managing Liverpool against Borussia Dortmund.

Those who will best remember both Klopp's managerial ability and his heartfelt connection with the people are the fans of Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool – the three clubs that he has taken charge of in his career. Starting at Mainz, the 56-year-old helped his former club to their first-ever Bundesliga promotion back in the 2004/05 campaign.

From there, Klopp took his success to Dortmund, where he cemented himself among some of the best managers in the world, beating Bayern Munich to the title not once but twice in the Bundesliga, before stepping into the Liverpool dugout with even greater success.

Honours won by Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp lifts the Champions League trophy.

It could be easy to say that Klopp should have won more, given his four Champions League finals and close title race. But the fact is, he has won every major honour that there is to win during his career.

No Mateta and "immense" gem starts in predicted Palace XI v Everton

Aside from those in the relegation zone, Crystal Palace fans have a genuine case for being the most unfortunate supporters in the Premier League this season.

The South Londoners have lost four of their last five games by a margin of 15-5 and are in the midst of an injury crisis with the likes of Eberechi Eze, Michael Olise, and Marc Guéhi, among others, set to spend some time on the sidelines.

With everything going on at the club, it is easy to understand the fan protests at recent matches, and with news of Oliver Glasner's imminent appointment, Roy Hodgson's time at the helm looks to be coming to an end.

The former England manager did a great job keeping the side in the league last season, but with results and performances being what they've been in recent months, it felt inevitable that he'd be moved on.

That said, while he will not be at the game tonight, whilst recovering in hospital, so let's take a look at the side that could take on the Toffees, with two potential changes to a side that has been riddled with injuries in recent months.

1 GK – Dean Henderson

dean-henderson-crystal-palace

Starting between the sticks will likely still be former Manchester United prospect Dean Henderson.

The Englishman has started the last eight Premier League games on the bounce, so it would be a real surprise not to see him in goal tonight.

That said, with the 26-year-old conceding 20 goals in those eight games and the competent Sam Johnstone waiting in the wings, his place in the team might not be as secure as some think.

2 RB – Daniel Munoz

Keeping his place at right-back is January signing Daniel Munoz.

The Colombian international has had a rough introduction to the Premier League so far, as his debut saw the Eagles fall to a 4-1 defeat away to Brighton & Hove Albion, while his home debut saw them lose 3-1 against Chelsea.

However, he showed some promise against the Blues, making five clearances, three tackles, one interception, and blocking one shot while making two key passes.

3 CB – Joachim Andersen

joachim-andersen-newcastle-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

Starting at centre-back is the man who captained the side against Chelsea in the absence of Guehi and Joel Ward, Joachim Andersen.

The Danish international is one of the first names on the teamsheet for Palace and has played every minute of league football for the club this season, so he should start again tonight.

4 CB – Chris Richards

chris-richards-cpfc

Keeping his place alongside Andersen will be former Bayern Munich man Chris Richards.

The American has started most of his league games this season in a defensive midfield role, but he was moved into the backline against the Pensioners in light of recent injuries, and he looks set to start there again tonight.

5 LB – Tyrick Mitchell

Tyrick Mitchell

Tyrick Mitchell rounds out the defenders, as he'll almost certainly keep his place at left-back.

The 24-year-old has started 96% of the team's league games this season and played 92% of the minutes in the league, and with few other genuine left-back options, his place seems secure.

6 DM – Jefferson Lerma

Colombian international Jefferson Lerma takes his place as the most defensive of the three midfielders in the side.

The former Bournemouth man did start slightly further up the pitch against Chelsea, and while he scored, the team's last two wins – against Sheffield United and Brentford – came with him in a midfield three.

He has also started 11 of his 22 games in a deeper position this campaign.

7 CM – Adam Wharton

Starting in the centre of the park will be another January signing, Adam Wharton.

The English midfielder was fairly impressive against Chelsea last week, winning eight of his 11 ground duels, making three interceptions, and playing two key passes, so it would be a real surprise to see him dropped against the Toffees.

Will Hughes suffered an injury against the Blues and was left as a doubt for this game, which is why Wharton could start again in the middle of the park, instead of making way for the next player in this XI.

8 CM – Matheus Franca

Another player who keeps his place in the XI is youngster Matheus Franca, but he could well start as the most attacking of the side's three midfielders.

The "immense talent", as described by U23 scout Antonio Mango, started out wide against Chelsea, and while he was not terrible, he was not particularly impressive either, with just one key pass to his name.

However, with the injuries that Palace have to contend with at the moment, tonight might be the perfect opportunity to play Franca in an attacking midfield role, as that is the position he has the most experience playing, and he could have far more of an impact on proceedings from that central area.

9 RW – Jordan Ayew

Jordan Ayew

Jordan Ayew looks set to maintain his place on the right flank for tonight's game against Everton.

The vastly experienced wideman has started 88% of Palace's games this season and has returned two goals and five assists in those appearances.

10 LW – Jeffrey Schlupp

Crystal Palace's Jeffrey Schlupp in action with Arsenal's Martin Odegaard andThomasPartey

The first personnel change in the team comes out on the left wing, as Jeffrey Schlupp comes in to fill the space left by Franca, replacing Hughes in the midfield.

The Ghanaian wideman has played just 57% of Palace's league minutes this season, but with a goal and assist to his name, he might just be the club's best option at present.

Poch should drop Chelsea’s 7/10 "handful" for clinical "monster"

It's a massive day in the season for Chelsea Football Club today.

Mauricio Pochettino's men have a chance to turn their campaign around by winning the League Cup this afternoon, although there is one problem: they'll have to beat Liverpool to do it

However, after their draw away to Manchester City last weekend, there's no reason why the Blues – who lost to the Anfield outfit twice at Wembley in 2022 – can't go one better this afternoon.

It's going to be a backs-against-the-walls kind of performance yet again, and with the chances likely to be few and far between, it would make sense to make one change to the starting lineup.

Nicolas Jackson's game vs Manchester City in numbers

Yes, the starter Pochettino should look to drop from his lineup today is Senegalese international Nicolas Jackson.

Now, this might seem harsh off the back of a reasonably impressive showing from the youngster against City last week, but there is a reason – his finishing.

It was something noted by the Standard's Nizaar Kinsella, who, despite awarding him a 7/10 for his display, wrote that he 'squandered a one-on-one with Ederson,' a fact reflected in his statistics from the game.

In his 82 minutes of action, the Djibonker-born forward registered an expected goal figure of 0.40, had one shot on target, missed one big chance, succeeded in one of his four dribbles and lost the ball 14 times.

Ultimately, while he can be, as John Terry said, "a right handful" for opposition defenders, his tendency to miss chances could be a significant issue in a one-off cup game, so he might be more effective coming off the bench.

Who Pochettino should start instead of Jackon

Chelsea, like many other sides in the league, has quite an extensive injury list at present, which certainly hinders Pochettino's ability to tinker. However, there are still several options at his disposal.

He could move Cole Palmer up top, although starting him out wide or deeper in midfield means he can have more influence over the game. Likewise, Raheem Sterling could play as a false nine, although his best performances – such as the home game against City – have come when he starts out on the left.

That leaves summer signing Christopher Nkunku as the most suitable option, and based on his goals record in Germany – 70 goals and 56 assists in 172 games – and his underlying numbers in England, he's also the best option.

Now, the French "monster", as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, is not an out-and-out striker, but he has played the position before, and while he also missed a chance to score at the Etihad, he has overperformed his expected league goals figure across his entire career – something Jackson has not done.

Moreover, when adding up this season, last season and the previous season, the dynamic forward scored 38 league goals from an expected figure of 33.57.

In contrast, Jackson has scored 19 league goals from an expected figure of 21.64, and this season alone, he is underperforming by 5.27 compared to Nknku's overperformance of 0.31.

Finally, the former RB Leipzig star also has experience of scoring against Liverpool, as he was the only Chelsea player to lay a glove on the Reds in their 4-1 mauling at Anfield last month.

Ultimately, Jackson is starting to show signs that he can hack it at the top level, but in a one-off final, Pochettino is better off starting a clinical player with more experience and a better track record of putting the ball in the back of the net.

Newcastle "taking notes" as auction for "elite" ace "promises to heat up"

Newcastle United officials are believed to be "taking notes" on an "elite" young defender, ahead of a potential move to St James' Park in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle planning Schar & Lascelles successors

The Magpies signed Sven Botman in 2022 and the Dutchman has been a fantastic signing, becoming the leader of their defence when he is fit and available. His absence through injury for a chunk of this season has played a part in Eddie Howe's side struggling to repeat last year's excellence in the Premier League, with only 14 starts coming his way in the competition.

The likes of Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles have done their best to cover for Botman when he has been out, but both are now in their 30s and don't represent the long-term future for Newcastle, despite the skipper's new contract extension. For that reason, younger defensive reinforcements need to come in at the end of the campaign, and reports have linked the club with numerous central defenders.

jean-clair-todibo-goncalo-inacio-liverpool-opinion

Two Sporting CP stars have emerged as option to come in this summer, with Ousmane Diomande and Goncalo Inacio both seen as a target for the Magpies. The former is just 20 years of age, but has already become a key start for the Portuguese giants, while the latter is a huge talent who is also reportedly wanted by Liverpool.

Crystal Palace and England centre-back Marc Guehi was also linked with a move to Newcastle late last year, and he could be keen for a fresh challenge soon, feeling like he has come as far as he can with the Eagles.

Newcastle scouts "taking notes" on elite young talent

According to O Jogo [via Sport Witness], Newcastle officials are "taking notes" on Diomande regularly, keeping consistent checks on his performances. There is set to be an intense battle to sign the defender once the summer transfer window arrives, with the report claiming that the fight to acquire his signature "promises to heat up".

Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

Liverpool and Juventus are also credited with interest in Diomande, who has shone for Sporting throughout this season, completing 91.2% of his passes across 17 Primeira Liga appearances. Meanwhile, football talent scout Jacek Kulig has waxed lyrical over him, saying: "You rarely see a player with such high ball-playing and pure defender skills. There are some tactical improvements but I'm quite sure this kid will play for the best teams in the world. The signs of elite talent."

Diomande is a player who Newcastle should be willing to break the bank for, considering his vast long-term potential, not to mention the fact that he could arguably go straight in as Botman's central defensive partner, proving to be an upgrade on both Schar and Lascelles.

If he continues on his current trajectory, there is no reason why the Ivorian can't become one of the best in Europe in his position – the fact that Sporting valued him at £69m when he was still a teenager speaks volumes – and the Magpies beating other huge clubs to his signature would feel significant.

Chelsea "baller" sold by Tuchel is now starring in Europa League

Chelsea's Cobham academy has been the home for many talented youngsters to progress, before having a successful career at Stamford Bridge.

Within the current first-team setup in 2024, players such as Reece James, Levi Colwill, and Conor Gallagher are just three who came through the club's academy before excelling under boss Mauricio Pochettino.

ronald-araujo-levi-colwill-liverpool-opinion

Many players have enjoyed spells with the Blues before leaving the club for hefty fees. Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Callum Hudson-Odoi were all products of the academy, making over 100 appearances before leaving the club.

The club also invested in a youngster back in 2017, before rapidly developing at the club, and progressing into the first team. However, the club sold him back in 2022, with the club potentially living to regret his departure after his recent form.

Billy Gilmour's stats at Chelsea

After signing a professional deal following his move from Rangers, midfielder Billy Gilmour joined Chelsea's U18 side with the youngster swapping Glasgow for London.

The Blues paid a rumoured £500k for the midfielder, with the club keeping one eye on the future with his signing.

He quickly became a regular for the U18 side, making 16 appearances in the U18 Premier League, scoring six times as a central midfielder – with Gilmour quickly showing his talent.

The young gem's good form saw him progress into the U21 side, featuring 30 times over the next two campaigns, with the Scotsman still standing out despite his tender age.

His impressive performance did not go unnoticed, with Frank Lampard handing Gilmour his Premier League debut for Chelsea as an 84th-minute substitute against Sheffield United in August 2019, before making his full league debut against Everton in March 2020.

The midfielder went on to play 11 times in all competitions for the Blues that campaign, before leaving the club to join Norwich City on loan for the 2021/22 season. The move was beneficial for the youngster, with it allowing him to gain valuable top-flight minutes.

He ended up making 24 appearances throughout the campaign, playing for 1,858 minutes, with manager Daniel Farke dubbing the midfielder as a "baller". However, Gilmour couldn't prevent the Canaries from relegation as Norwich ended the season bottom of the league.

Gilmour's loan stint in East Anglia wasn't enough to break into Chelsea's first team, with the former Rangers man permanently moving away from Stamford Bridge after being sold by Thomas Tuchel in the summer of 2022.

Billy Gilmour's stats since leaving Chelsea

Gilmour joined Brighton and Hove Albion for a deal in the region of £7.5m, on a four-year contract. He made 14 league appearances during his first season on the South Coast, before becoming a more regular starter under Roberto De Zerbi this season.

The Scottish international has featured 25 times in the league, along with seven appearances for the Seagulls in the Europa League – with a 91% pass accuracy in the European competition as he has starred on the continental stage as a metronome in midfield.

His performances have seen his market value rise to £15m – with the midfielder's valuation increasing by 100% in the space of 18 months since his departure from Chelsea.

With Gilmour only being 22 years old, he could still have a huge future ahead of him, with the Blues potentially living to regret selling the midfielder given his recent form in the Premier League and Europa League, as they had a blunder with his exit.

Dusan Tadic praises Chelsea talent after what he’s seen of him training

Fenerbache forward Dusan Tadic has raved over a "great talent" who he says is the "future of Chelsea".

Chelsea's policy of buying younger players

A reoccurring theme of Chelsea's transfer policy since Clearlake Capital's takeover in 2022 has been the acquisition of younger players.

Chelsea have done a tonne of leg work to convince star to join them

The Blues have been working behind-closed-doors.

According to recent reports, chairman Todd Boehly and co are planning to sign two players in each position under the age of 23 over the next few years, with Chelsea already bringing in a plethora of young stars.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino, however, has previously suggested this could be a problem – as he doesn't want to end up picking the youngest team in England.

“I am not picking the team because they are young,” said Pochettino.

“I don’t want to be the coach that picks the youngest team in England. We are a young team, but we have a good balance. We have players like Thiago Silva, 39, Raheem Sterling, [Christopher] Nkunku, 26, or [Axel] Disasi.

“The problem is not that the players are so young. The problem is that the team is young. With 16 or 17 players that have arrived new from the beginning of the season, you need to build a team. At the moment, maybe it’s not so good. If not, we could be in another position. It’s obvious.”

Of the many young Chelsea crop to join in the last 12 months, 24-year-old goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic has been regularly called upon this season after making the move to Stamford Bridge from New England Revolution last summer.

The Serbian has filled in for Robert Sanchez lately, with many arguably not expecting the shot-stopper to gain that much in terms of league minutes over 2023/2024.

Dusan Tadic says Petrovic is "the future of Chelsea"

Speaking to London News Online, former Southampton star Tadic has backed Petrovic for greatness in the Chelsea net – heaping praise on his compatriot.

“Dorde is a great goalkeeper and a great talent and it’s very nice to see him play for Chelsea," said Tadic.

“I saw immediately in training what a great goalkeeper he is. He’s [also] a very good guy and professional. Actually I am not surprised [to see him play at Chelsea] because in the past we were also looking at him for Ajax. And I remember they asked me about him.

“He was on the list of all the top clubs and if he’s Chelsea number one now is no coincidence. I think he can keep his place [following Sanchez’s return] because once goalkeepers take their chance they don’t give it away to nobody.

“I trust him, he’ll do that. He’s the future of Chelsea. Milinkovic-Savic did very well, we have Dorde, we have Svilar and Rajkovic, so many good goalkeepers. It’s nice for Serbia to have more and more options.”

Man Utd should regret selling Eriksen upgrade who was wanted by Man City

After such a positive season last time around, Manchester United’s 2023/24 campaign has been rather disappointing.

As of right now, the race for Champions League football next term is an uphill battle, with the Red Devils sitting sixth in the Premier League.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag before a Premier League game.

However, in fairness to Erik ten Hag, he’s struggled to name a consistent starting side due to injuries, which is a key reason as to why the side hasn’t continued to progress.

One of those who has endured somewhat of a nightmare period both on the sidelines and in the squad is Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen.

Christian Eriksen’s current worth

At the start of last season, Eriksen joined Man United on a free transfer, following an impressive stint at Brentford, where he registered five goal contributions in ten games.

During his first campaign as a Red Devil, the signing of the Dane seemed like a bargain, with the experienced midfielder proving to be an important player for Ten Hag, as highlighted by the fact that he was United’s joint-top assister last season in the Premier League.

Man United's Christian Eriksen

Despite starting 25 Premier League games in 2022/23 with only injuries preventing him from playing more, the 32-year-old has struggled to cement himself a spot this campaign, starting just nine matches.

This decrease in minutes has seen Eriksen’s estimated value drop all the way down to £8.6m as per Transfermarkt.

That's a considerable drop from the £22m he was valued at during the opening months of his time at Old Trafford. A series of underwhelming displays, coupled with injury and a dwindling value may beg the question, why did United get rid of Fred?

Fred’s transfer value in 2024

In 2018, Brazilian gem Fred joined Jose Mourinho’s United from Shakhtar Donetsk for a huge fee of £52.5m, which at the time was the club’s third-most expensive signing of all time.

The number 17 made over 200 appearances for the Red Devils, but he was a player that often split opinions, with football content creator Liam Canning labelling Fred both “outrageous” and “infuriating.”

However, last summer, the 31-year-old departed Old Trafford for a fee of £12.9m, moving to Turkish side Fenerbahce, where he has thrived in a team that’s lost just once in 30 league games.

Although the midfielder left the Premier League, he has still held his value, and he’s now estimated to be worth £16.3m according to Transfermarkt.

This would still make him one of the least valuable midfielders in the current United crop, but Ten Hag may have been better off keeping the Brazilian instead of keeping Eriksen and signing Sofyan Amrabat.

Fred is known for his ability to be an excellent squad player who has proven to step up when needed. This was particularly on display when United faced tougher opposition last season, with the tenacious tackler showing his influence against Barcelona in the Europa League, for example, when he scored and assisted across both legs.

Over the two games, Fred also made ten tackles, which highlights his defensive security; however, the aspects that Fred thrives in are where Eriksen struggles the most, in regards to energy, tackling, and out-of-possession tenacity, as shown by the former Spurs players 0.9 tackles per game in the Premier League this season.

Overall, it’s quite clear that letting Fred go in order to keep a declining Eriksen may have been a mistake, with the profile of the former missing in the United squad for Ten Hag this season.
