Ajax reach €25m Brian Brobbey agreement as striker nears Ligue 1 transfer

Ajax look set to lose homegrown striker Brian Brobbey after on the verge of reaching a €25 million agreement with Ligue 1 side Rennes.

  • Ajax have set a €25m price tag for Brobbey
  • 23-year-old yet to decide his future
  • Sale would give Dutch club funds to sign new midfielder

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to , Ajax are demanding €25m (£21 m/$27m) from Rennes for Brobbey, with the deal including bonuses and a resale percentage. An agreement between the two clubs is said to be close. However, the ball is now in the striker’s court, as he must decide if he wants to move to France. The 23-year-old forward has also attracted interest from Bundesliga and Serie A clubs and may wait until later in the transfer window before making a decision.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ajax re-signed Brobbey from RB Leipzig in 2022 for €16m after a short and unsuccessful spell in Germany. He is under contract with the Amsterdam club until 2027 and last season made 44 appearances across all competitions, scoring seven goals and adding six assists. Selling Brobbey would give Ajax some much-needed breathing space in the market. The club had been chasing a holding midfielder and looked at options like Chema Andres and Mario Martin from Real Madrid and Tyler Morton from Liverpool. But with money tight earlier in the window, Ajax couldn’t move fast enough, and all three players have already gone elsewhere. There was even a brief discussion about a possible return for Edson Alvarez, who is now at West Ham, but his Premier League salary made such a move impossible.

  • TELL ME MORE

Ajax’s plan is still to buy a replacement if Brobbey leaves, though a loan move has not been ruled out with the transfer deadline approaching. The club’s preference has always been a permanent signing, but the club's desperation might force them to reconsider.

    WHAT NEXT FOR BRIAN BROBBEY?

If Brobbey agrees on personal terms, the deal with Rennes will go through, and Ajax will have fresh resources to strengthen their midfield. The French club is confident of completing the signing, but Bundesliga and Serie A clubs could still come in late to swoop the striker.

‘Don't kick me’ – Patrick Dorgu reveals the frosty warning new Manchester United signing Matheus Cunha gave him in training after first fiery Premier League encounter

Patrick Dorgu has revealed new Manchester United team-mate Matheus Cunha gave him a frosty warning following his move from Wolves.

United's Dorgu came up against Cunha when the latter was still playing for Wolves last season, with the Denmark defender fouling the Brazilian forward in that meeting. When he signed for the Red Devils, the former Atletico Madrid man warned the wing-back "not to kick him in training". Now, however, they appear to be on good terms.

    WHAT DORGU SAID

He told BBC Sport: "I played against him [Cunha] and he had me once, when I got a yellow card. When he came he was like 'don't kick me in training'. He is a really public guy. He talks a lot and he's really funny – he's trying to engage with everyone so it's easier to talk with him because he has a lot of energy. He's really good at driving with the ball and getting past players. I feel my runs will help him to get more space to play. Obviously, it's not only on the left side, we need to attack on both, but we do need to connect well."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

United will need to get the very best out of Cunha and Dorgu this season as Ruben Amorim's team try to banish the demons of the 2024-25 campaign. But after a relatively slow start which has yielded one point from a possible six so far this term, there is work to do.

Newcastle name their price! Magpies to 'seriously consider' Alexander Isak exit if Liverpool submit £130m bid for unsettled striker on deadline day

Newcastle United are prepared to sell striker Alexander Isak if Premier League rivals Liverpool submit an offer of £130 million on Monday.

  • Newcastle ready to sell Isak to Liverpool
  • Have set a final price tag of £130m
  • Magpies to cash in even if they can't sign a new striker

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to a report from , Newcastle's Saudi-based owners Public Investment Fund (PIF) have decided to let their guard down and are prepared to facilitate Isak's departure if Liverpool can table a £130 million (€150m/$175m) bid for the striker. Reports earlier this week mentioned that the defending league champions would return with an offer worth £130m, which would break the British transfer record set by Liverpool after capturing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £116m.

  • Getty/GOAL

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The report explains Newcastle will not stand in Isak's way if Liverpool make an offer worth considering, despite having insisted on a £150m (€173m/$203m) fee all summer. The Magpies have tried hard to sign two forwards and recently completed a club-record move for Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart. Newcastle have made big efforts to land Brentford's Yoane Wissa and Wolves' Jorgen Strand Larsen, but approaches for both players have been rebuffed. However, it is understood that Isak's potential exit will not hinge on Newcastle's success in signing another player for the attack.

  • TELL ME MORE

Isak's relationship with Newcastle and their fans is at an all-time low. Having joined the club in 2022, the Sweden international became one of the best strikers in the world after scoring 54 goals in just 86 Premier League games. In the last two seasons, he has registered tallies of 21 and 23 goals in the top-flight, which earned Isak a demigod status among Newcastle fans. However, he has been training away from the squad and hasn't made a single appearance this season after publicly expressing his desire to leave. Since then, fans' love for Isak has turned to borderline hatred, with shirts reading the words "Isak is a rat" put on sale outside St James' Park.

    WHAT NEXT?

Earlier this week, Newcastle's owners met with Isak at the player's house to reach a resolution regarding his future. However, the 25-year-old has stood firm on his decision to seek pastures new this summer. Newcastle's hierarchy is believed to have offered Isak a new contract in an attempt to keep him at the club for another season. The new contract would reportedly include an exit clause which would allow Isak to leave next summer for a fixed price. Liverpool sending a formal proposal for the ex-Real Sociedad marksman is not set in stone as things stand, however. They signed Hugo Ekitike in a big-money move from Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this summer and the Frenchman has started his life at Anfield with a bang, scoring thrice in his first four games.

  • WHAT ARTETA SAID

Questions have been asked of Arsenal’s tactics against potential Premier League title rivals, but Arteta told reporters of his approach: “We didn’t do our game plan to frustrate them, we did it to win it. I think we elevated the game and the dominance to a point that they have to raise it, they did, especially from the 60th to 78th minute, when then you could see that there were no margins in the game.

“And then when that happens, the game is going to be decided in two ways. One, with an individual error and two, with a magic moment. So they created a moment that was incredible, that has won the game and that was the difference, nothing else.”

Arteta added on starting with a supposedly conservative midfield trio of Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino, with Eberechi Eze, Ethan Nwaneri and Martin Odegaard left on the bench: “Well, that’s what we had. After the game, I think it’s too easy to say that.”

    WHAT HAPPENED?

América and Cruz Azul are set to clash for a third consecutive time in the Liga MX Liguilla, with recent history favoring Las Águilas. However, it was Cruz Azul who claimed the most recent maatch between the two, eliminating América in the quarterfinals of the CONCACF Champions Cup under the direction of Vicente Sánchez.

At a news conference ahead of the first leg of the Clausura 2025 semifinal – set to be played at Estadio Olímpico Universitario – América head coach André Jardine made it clear that his side isn’t motivated by revenge.

"They’re a team we respect. We want to win every match, fight for our greatness, and for our goals," he said. "I don’t know if revenge is more important than that. Whatever the challenge, we must overcome it. Our desire to achieve our objectives is greater than any sense of payback, It’s not a feeling of revenge, it’s a feeling of achieving our goals."

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

América are on the verge of making history, poised to become the first club to reach seven consecutive Liga MX finals. Jardine has a remarkable track record, having won all 11 knockout-round series he has coached with América during the "Fiesta Grande."

Out of 21 Liguilla matches, he has lost just once – the second leg of the Apertura 2023 semifinal against Atlético de San Luis. However, América had already sealed the series with a dominant 5-0 win in the first leg. Since then, Jardine has gone 17 straight knockout matches without a defeat.

"The numbers show that Club América is on the right path in every aspect," he said. "It’s the result of hard work by many people. These aren’t just my accomplishments; a lot of good things were already in place before I arrived. There’s a front office that knows where it’s headed, focused on building a strong squad and maintaining a well-structured club.

"You can feel that seriousness and professionalism in every contract and every player. It fills us with pride, but also responsibility, because expectations keep growing. To meet them, we have to keep improving, because our opponents are also evolving. It’s a constant race – if you don’t want to fall behind, you must keep developing."

Jardine also shared updates on the squad. Midfielder Jonathan dos Santos has fully recovered from a knee injury and will be available for the semifinal. Brian Rodríguez could feature in the second leg, while Alejandro Zendejas, who came off injured in the second leg against Pachuca, is not a major concern.

Jardine said a final decision on whether Zendejas will start will be made closer to kickoff.

    WHAT ANDRÉ JARDINE SAID

The Brazilian coach also spoke about the growing rivalry between América and Cruz Azul, with the two clubs set to face each other in the Liguilla for a third straight tournament.

"I believe all teams evolve. There are details that change – some big, some small – that apply to both us and Cruz Azul," Jardine explained. "Even when a club keeps the same coach, it’s not the same team as in past tournaments. You grow as a group. Clubs understand that change is necessary, and Cruz Azul has found a way to maintain continuity while improving. They’ve made roster changes, and that naturally affects the way they attack and defend.

"Cruz Azul has a deep squad with many options, which makes them a flexible team. They can play with two holding midfielders, three in midfield, or even a back line of five. They adapt frequently – it’s a team with structure and identity, regardless of who’s coaching them."

And the frequent matchups mean both clubs know each other well.

"We’ve faced Cruz Azul enough to know what to expect," he said. "Even if they change 10 percent of their lineup or tactics, we know how we have to defend. It’s a well-studied matchup for both sides. Execution and strategy will make the difference."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bamford will command attention from clubs in the second tier, including Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's Wrexham. The Red Dragons were linked with the player in January, as they look to elevate their squad with proven entities at the Championship level.

  • WHAT FARKE SAID

Farke said: "With Patrick, I had a really open and honest conversation,” he said. “I would have preferred a completely fit Patrick Bamford in the last two seasons.

“He knows how much I rate him as a person. It was the second day of pre-season when I told him in my office he wasn’t part of my plans for the upcoming Premier League season, due to the fact he’s had really difficult years over the past years.

"For me, Patrick is someone who needs to be the main man. If he gets this, he will score goals at every level because he’s a top player, but after the last few seasons, I wasn’t willing to do this and say he was our main man at Premier League level.

“With the CV he’s had at Leeds United, he shouldn’t be a back-up option. This is not what you should be when you are the main man for so many years.

“He has trained really professionally and his reaction was top class, as expected. He liked the openness and honesty."

'Making this change is seismic'- Takeaways from Don Garber's 'MLS 3.0' initiative, including calendar shift, streaming insights, All-Star format and roster rules revamp

The MLS Commissioner discussed several topics, including roster rules, viewership and a potential fall-to-spring schedule

AUSTIN, Texas – Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber arrived about 10 to 15 minutes late to his annual midseason All-Star address, looked around the room and smiled as he blamed traffic for his delay.

"I can remember the days when there was no traffic on the way to a game, but it's great to be here," he said

While there was plenty of attention on Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi's decision to skip MLS's midsummer classic, Garber largely focused on growth and change – especially to current roster rules, the calendar and the All-Star format. He revealed more than he has previously about Apple TV consumption and also touched on the recent protests around MLS regarding a lack of a statement about immigration enforcement.

"We have focused on what we're calling MLS 3.0," he said. "MLS in the next 30 years, a comprehensive strategy to drive our next era of growth, of innovation, global competitiveness, which we think is very important."

    MOMENTUM BUILDING ON SCHEDULE CHANGE

Reports emerged this week that MLS could vote again on a schedule shift to better align with FIFA's international calendar. While Garber did not divulge specifics, he did appear to indicate that there is increasing momentum. The league had previously said no change would take affect until at least 2027.

"If it's going to happen, it's going to happen after the 2026 World Cup," Garber said. "So making this change is seismic. It's not something we should do lightly. We obviously have teams across multiple climate zones, multiple time zones, unlike any other league in the world. And if we do make the change, we're not going to go back on that decision.

"There are a number of key benefits to it. Aligning with the world standard, we think, is important for our brand as we try to continue to engage as one of the important, influential leagues in the world. We want to align with on the calendar to be able to be even more engaged on the player transfer market."

Garber pointed to the league's growth in transfers, saying MLS could reach $150 million in player sales. He also mentioned that shifting the calendar would mean the MLS postseason would be played earlier – and not go head-to-head with NFL or college football.

"Imagine what that will be when we're aligned on the international calendar," Garber said. "We also have our most important big games in the busiest part of the calendar, right? And I think where we are today in the fall might be very or winter might be very different than when the league was founded. The league continues to have its [MLS] Cup later and later in December, and that is a challenge that has to be addressed."

Garber said that logistics are the biggest barrier.

"How do we ensure that when we make that decision, our facilities are ready for it, our fans are ready for it, and our corporate partners are ready for it? So I would rather get it right, and take our time [then] get it wrong and do it quick."

    NEW ROSTER RULES AHEAD?

Inter Miami was the only MLS team among three competing in the recent Club World Cup to advance out of the group stage – a fact Garber touted. He also said the league wants to achieve more in future tournaments – Miami had the only win in the CWC among MLS teams, as both LAFC and Seattle Sounders fell short.

Garber praised FIFA President Gianni Infantino for his conviction to push forward with revamped 32-team tournament, noting it had plenty of detractors prior to it kicking off. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, Garber said MLS is reviewing its current roster structure to allow potential growth.

He insisted the current structure is tied to data that the league constantly reviews.

"We have rules because we're looking at data," he said. "We're evaluating where we fit and how our allocation of resources can help our league move forward."

He pointed to Miami's success in recruiting global stars as a sign the league can be attractive.

"Our clubs are becoming teams of choice for top players, and as Miami was able to prove, be able to stand toe to toe with some tough clubs," he said. "Now, if the objective is to win the Club World Cup, which it is, we just have to figure out, how do we manage that within the overall economic environment that exists today?"

He added, "As our owners feel that more flexibility will drive more opportunity and more competitiveness, and we will move in that direction."

    INSIGHT INTO VIEWERSHIP

MLS and Apple TV, the league's streaming outlet, have largely been tight-lipped about viewership metrics since their partnership began in 2023. Garber on Wednesday offered some insight into key metrics for the league.

"The Apple deal has grown. We're averaging 120,000 unique viewers per match," Garber said. "That's an increase of almost 50 percent compared to last year. Distribution has helped drive a lot of that now you can get MLS season pass on Comcast or Direct TV. For the first time of any sports league, we're inviting access to fans through EAFC Mobile.

"It's clearly one of the most transformational times in the history of our sport. Obviously, we think Major League Soccer is one of the drivers of the growth of the sport here in this country."

Garber explained some of the complexities in understanding the streaming data, and drawing conclusions.

"Remember that every single game is treated exactly the same on MLS season pass," he said. "So how do you evaluate the fact that we have games going on simultaneously, way more games going on simultaneous than any other league? We're not putting one or two games on on a Saturday and then the next game on a Saturday, or a handful of games regionally on a Sunday.

"Aggregate all that, depending on what week it is, you got over a million people that are unique viewers to a match. What we're struggling with, and I think what the industry is struggling with is that there has been no system to be able to evaluate how people are in a subscription service, how they're viewing and consuming games. And what is the metric that matters most? It's an average minute audience. Is it unique viewers? Remember, we're on a subscription service."

    CHANGES TO ALL-STAR FORMAT?

All-Star games across North America's sports leagues are declining in viewership. Garber, who took part in announcing that Charlotte will host the 2026 All-Star game in an NFL stadium, said MLS should aim to be ambitious in that event, which immediately follows the World Cup.

"Well, I love the All-Star Game, most leagues probably do," Garber said. "How do you get your players to love the All-Star Game, your partners to love the All-Star Game, and for fans too? We made a decision many years ago that we didn't want an exhibition; we wanted a competitive game… We are really focused in Charlotte to make that a really big event coming right out of the World Cup, gain a ton of attention."

Garber did admit that with MLS and Liga MX continuing to engage with each other in the Leagues Cup, the league is considering how it formats its approach for the next game.

"Maybe it is time for us to evolve the format. As long as we have a competitive game that people care about, I think our All Star game will be as successful as it's been in the past, and we'll see how it plays out," he said.

Over the course of both innings in this match he showed, too, that he is a complete player, capable of scoring on both sides of the wicket. In the first innings, 31 of his runs came in the arc between backward square leg and midwicket; this time around, he clearly favoured the off side: 64% of his runs were scored on that side of the wicket, including all 12 fours. On the other hand, Kevin Pietersen was prolific on the leg side: 69 out of his 87 runs came in that region, thanks in part to Anil Kumble’s round-the-wicket, outside-leg line.Admittedly lucky to survive a couple of clear chances off him, Pietersen was quite prolific against Kumble, hitting him for 36 from 41 balls. In fact, Pietersen has had a pretty good time against legspinners: in the Ashes he took 153 off Shane Warne and was dismissed just thrice, while Danish Kaneria went for 58 from 77 balls in the Test series last year, though Kaneria claimed his wicket a couple of times. On the other hand, it wasn’t such a happy day for the Indians, especially the spinners. The potency of Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in the opposition’s second innings in a Test in India isn’t often questioned, but here they bowled 62 overs between them and bagged just a single wicket. That’s the most ineffective combined performance by them in the second innings of a match in India. Their previous worst was against Pakistan
at Kolkata in 1998-99 where they bowled 43 overs for one wicket.England have done most of the running in this Test, and India will be up against it on the last day. Out of ten Tests against England at home when India have batted in the fourth innings, they have won four, drawn four and lost two. The highest total they have chased successfully is just 86, at Madras
in 1972-73.
