The 15 Most Memorable Matches Between Arsenal and Newcastle United

Arsenal and Newcastle United have produced many exciting encounters over the years, but what have been the most memorable in history?

Whether the Magpies were facing ‘Woolwich Arsenal’ or the Gunners as we know them today, there were scintillating performances from both sides – high-scoring matches not overly difficult to come across.

The first clash between these two teams dates back to 1893 where they played out a 2-2 draw in front of 6,000 spectators at Manor Ground – Arsenal’s former home.

Arsenal edge Newcastle in the overall head-to-head record with 77 wins, while the Magpies have won 67 of the 182 meetings.

But what are the most memorable of meetings between the two teams? Here’s a selection of the very best…

Newcastle 6-0 Woolwich Arsenal, September 1893

The second ever meeting between the two clubs was dominated by Newcastle. Both teams were in ‘Division Two’ at the time and it was the Magpies who impressed.

Joe Wallace and Bill Thompson both scored hat-tricks as the hosts annihilated the Gunners in front of just 2,000 fans at St James’ Park.

Arsenal 2-1 Newcastle, April 1932

An FA Cup Final clash between these two in 1932 was an eventful one at Wembley Stadium.

It was Arsenal who struck first after Bob John scored fifteen minutes in, but a resilient comeback from Newcastle saw them draw level in the 38th minute courtesy of Jack Allen.

Allen then became the match-winner with 18 minutes to play and the Magpies lifted the FA Cup for the third time in 22 years.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal, May 1952

In a period where substitutes were not allowed, this FA Cup Final was incredible. In front of 100,000 spectators, Arsenal suffered multiple injuries and finished the match with just seven players on the pitch.

Newcastle took full advantage of their numerical superiority and George Robledo wrote himself into the history books with an 84th minute winner.

Arsenal 5-3 Newcastle, December 1976

Alan Ball, a member of the 1966 World Cup winners squad, made his final appearance for Arsenal in this meeting before moving to Southampton and it was certainly one to remember.

The game was a close contest but was separated by one man – Malcolm Macdonald. His hat-trick gave Arsenal all three points and ensured Ball finished his spell in London on a high.

Newcastle 4-2 Arsenal, May 2000

On the final day of the season, Newcastle produced a magnificent performance under the guidance of Sir Bobby Robson and it was a sign of things to come.

Alan Shearer scored his 300th career goal to help the Magpies and he was delighted. He said: “I’m a very proud man tonight. When I set out on that road to Southampton at 15, I never dreamt that I’d score 300.”

Arsenal 5-0 Newcastle, December 2000

Despite losing 4-2 in the previous encounter, Arsenal turned up for revenge and that is exactly what they got.

Thierry Henry and Nwankwo Kanu scored for the hosts but it was Ray Parlour who stole the show – an excellent hat-trick completed the 5-0 demolition of Newcastle.

Arsenal 1-3 Newcastle, December 2001

An outstanding victory at Highbury in December put Newcastle top of the Premier League at Christmas.

Both Parlour and Craig Bellamy were sent off for each side and the 10-men of Newcastle proved to be tougher; late goals from Shearer and Laurent Robert sealed the win for the Magpies.

Celtic fans aren’t happy with Neil Lennon after his comments on CL exit

Neil Lennon has shifted the blame for Celtic’s Champions League exit away from his team selection, and the Hoops supporters are furious.

Tuesday night’s 4-3 defeat at Parkhead to Romanian champions CFR Cluj meant that Celtic were dumped out of the Champions League qualifiers, and the fans were livid at such a defeat.

Just as people might’ve been calming down however, Lennon has put his foot in it and failed to take responsibility for the crushing defeat.

The Celts manager has done himself no favours by failing to lay some blame on Tuesday’s team selection. One real bone of contention was playing star midfielder Callum McGregor at left-back, a move that didn’t go down well with the fans and failed on the night.

C’mon the Hoops throwback to one of the greatest Celtic goalkeepers of all time in the video below…

Another issue the fans have with Lennon’s line-up is the talent on the bench. New signings Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo and Christopher Jullien were stuck waiting in reserve as they watched their new side concede four goals in a crucial tie on home turf.

Here’s how the fans reacted on Twitter to Lennon’s abdication of responsibility…

West Brom’s exclusion of Charlie Austin is surprising, according to Darren Bent

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players, and managers…

Darren Bent has revealed his shock at Charlie Austin not featuring at the weekend, speaking to Football Insider after West Brom drew to Derby.

What’s he said?

Slaven Bilic needed another late penalty to ensure that his side’s unbeaten run continued into another Championship weekend with goalkeeper Sam Johnstone also coming to the rescue, saving a second Martyn Waghorn penalty.

Kenneth Zohore slotted home that 84th-minute spot-kick and was given the starting duties over their £4m deadline day arrival.

Austin was named on the bench but didn’t feature in the match at all.

The decision left the former Derby striker rather perplexed, speaking to Football Insider, Bent said:

“I was really surprised because I know he’s going to score goals. They had good chances and they didn’t take them.

“Slaven Bilic has spoken about game time and him not being ready yet but he needs to play games – then we’ll see the best of Charlie Austin. We’ve seen at this level, and even in the Premier League, he’s done well.”

Must play more

The 30-year-old striker is desperate for match fitness so he should be starting every game possible, or at least introduced for half an hour or so per match – especially as they are no longer in the Carabao Cup.

The Baggies are also looking rather lacklustre in front of goal, an issue we highlighted on Football FanCast this week.

Despite averaging the fourth-most shots per game in the league at 15.6, only 3.6 of those are actually on target, ranking them 13th against all the other Championship clubs, per WhoScored.

Austin may be lacking fitness but his predatory-like instincts and ability to score in the box, as shown in the xG map in this article, must be considered, especially as he wouldn’t require a lot of movement if he was simply trying to poach.

That presents another reason for why a switch to two up front could pay dividends.

It would give the 6 foot 2 forward less responsibility around the pitch meaning he won’t get overworked and tired.

The former Southampton striker has a rather impressive goal record in the Championship and it’s not as if his time in the Premier League was lacking either.

At this level, Austin has bagged 66 goals in 131 appearances whilst he has hit 34 goals since the 2014/15 season in the top-flight.

On those reasons alone, he needs to play more often for Albion.

Arsenal fans react to Juventus’ Shkodran Mustafi link

[ad_pod ]

Shkodran Mustafi is far from a popular figure at the Emirates Stadium.

The Germany international has often been criticised for his below-par performances, and many of the Arsenal supporters have called for Unai Emery to sell the 27-year-old.

The former Valencia and Sampdoria central defender has yet to feature this term and has been told by his current boss that he has no future with the Gunners. However, despite that, it seems that there are still some clubs in Europe who would be willing to sign him.

“It feels like a loss” – that was the view of a Spurs fan after this weekend’s North London Derby in the video below…

Amongst them are Serie A champions Juventus. It has been reported (Sky Germany via talkSPORT) that the Old Lady are interested in Mustafi, and want to take him to Italy before the end of the transfer window.

Unsurprisingly, these links have got the Arsenal supporters talking in numbers, and they have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts. You can see the best comments from the social media platform below.

Crystal Palace can deploy Gary Cahill, Mamadou Sakho & James Tomkins in this XI

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace enjoyed an excellent 2018/19 campaign from a defensive aspect, showcasing their organisation and positional discipline under Roy Hodgson on numerous occasions.

The formidable partnership of Mamadou Sakho and James Tomkins helped the Eagles record the sixth-best clean sheet record in the Premier League last term with 12 shutouts, although a new face has emerged who could potentially break the duo up.

Gary Cahill.

The 61-cap England international arrived at Selhurst Park on a free transfer this summer after leaving Chelsea and has quickly taken to life in the No.24 shirt at Palace.

Cahill impressed the Eagles supporters on Twitter after his match-winning debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford and followed that performance up with a clean sheet against his former side Aston Villa in a 1-0 win at Selhurst Park.

Despite his undoubted influence, leaving either Sakho or Tomkins out of the side would be a big shout, so let’s look at how Hodgson could incorporate them all into the same XI…

In this system, a 3-4-2-1 formation is being used in order to get the three centre-backs into the same side.

Patrick van Aanholt, a full-back who absolutely loves to attack – the Dutchman has 17 goals in his last five Premier League seasons before 2019/20 – should suit a left wing-back role to perfection.

However, Joel Ward – who plays on the opposite side to the former Chelsea defender – is far from suited to an attacking role given his lack of pace, so we have put Andros Townsend at right wing-back – he is a strong defensive contributor, as per his WhoScored page.

Luka Milivojevic and Cheikhou Kouyate would provide the steel in midfield to cover the attacking wing-backs, while Max Meyer and Wilfried Zaha offer some attacking inventiveness behind the lone striker, Jordan Ayew.

It would definitely be a bold and unusual system for Hodgson to use, although it would arguably be the best formation to deploy in order to utilise his three best centre-backs alongside each other.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane needs to win battle against Gary Cahill on Saturday

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has made a decent enough start to the Premier League season with three goals in four appearances, although he suffered a disappointing afternoon in his side’s previous home match when he failed to score in the 1-0 defeat against Newcastle United.

The England international will be looking to get back on the score-sheet again for the visit of Crystal Palace on Saturday, following a mixed performance against Kosovo on Tuesday where he scored once but missed a penalty kick, too.

Spurs lie ninth in the top flight standings with only one win from their opening four fixtures, and that record needs to improve significantly if they are going to be anywhere near being title challengers over the remainder of 2019/20.

Even at this early stage, a win against Roy Hodgson’s men looks to be important, but Kane will need to get the better of an experienced centre-back who is in fine form himself.

Gary Cahill signed for Palace on a free transfer during the summer transfer window, but he had to wait until the third Premier League game of the campaign to be handed his debut – a 2-1 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

It was an impressive instant impact from the man who was captain of Chelsea as recently as last term, and he followed it up with a clean sheet in the 1-0 win against Aston Villa at Selhurst Park before the international break.

The former England international has already shown his strength in the air by winning an average of 2.5 aerial duels per game, as per WhoScored, while he has made 1.5 blocks and a whopping seven clearances per outing as well.

His stats in the air compared to Kane’s – the centre-forward has only won an average of 0.8 per match so far this term – suggests he is going to have to do the majority of his work on the ground if he is to get the better of his former Three Lions teammate.

Cahill will be looking to take advantage of the fact the £200,000-a-week Spurs talisman has been dispossessed an average of two times, suggesting the ball is there to be won when he is in possession.

It will certainly be an interesting battle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and manager Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping Kane can down his opponent to deliver a crucial three points.

Arsenal: Fans overjoyed after Joe Willock signs new long-term contract

Arsenal fans are overjoyed after youngster Joe Willock signed a new four-year contract at the club, keeping him until 2023.

The 20-year-old has recently broken into the Gunners’ senior squad, starting three of the club’s four Premier League games so far this season, including the trip to Anfield (via WhoScored).

The youngster has come a long way with the north London giants, first joining the club at the mere age of four (via Arsenal).

In total he has made 20 first-team Blackpool in the FA Cup third round last season.

Willock has been heaped with praise this season, with Arsenal legend Ian Wright saying he could replace the error-prone Granit Xhaka in midfield (via Goal).

Arsenal fans took to Twitter to express their delight after the young midfielder signed a new long-term contract, with one fan even calling him the next Abou Diaby, who was a huge prospect when he joined from Auxerre in 2006 and former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger even touted the midfielder as the next Patrick Vieira, but injuries let him down.

Here is a selection of tweets from the north London faithful:

Real Madrid loanee Sergio Reguilon had a brilliant game vs Deportivo Alaves

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Loan Watch series, which takes a closer look at those players who are aiming to galvanise their careers away from the spotlight of their parent club.

Real Madrid’s 2019 summer transfer window was far from perfect.

Yes, they brought in some big names like Eden Hazard and Luka Jovic but some of their decisions have been rather bizarre. One of the biggest mistakes, however, might have been their decision to loan out the 24-year-old left-back, Sergio Reguilon.

The Spaniard made a total of 22 appearances in 2018/19 for Los Blancos, registering three assists in all competitions.

Real signed Ferland Mendy in the summer but they could well have kept Reguillon around simply for squad depth purposes.

Real reportedly forked out £47.1m to land Mendy from Lyon but that’s £47.1m that could’ve been saved in the first place looking at Reguilon’s performances for Sevilla.

So far, in the four games he has played for the Andalusian team, he has scored once and also registered an assist.

The 24-year-old left-back was solid at the back in the outing against Deportivo Alaves, registering one tackle, four interceptions and two aerial duels won.

Sevilla won the game 1-0.

But it was not just his defensive game that was great, either. Reguilon was brilliant going the other way as well, threatening the opposition in attack with two key passes, two dribbles and overall 83.3% passing accuracy.

By all standards, he was one of Sevilla’s best performers, leaving him with a 7.39 rating according to Whoscored, the second-highest on the team, just behind Joan Jordan’s 7.72, but the 25-year-old did net the winning goal.

It seems that Reguilon is thriving on his loan spell, so it’s difficult not to wonder what might have been had he stayed at the Bernabeu rather than the club spending big on Mendy.

These performances are bound to attract Zidane’s attention sooner rather than later and who knows, maybe the 24-year-old still has a future at the Spanish capital once his loan spell comes to an end.

Exclusive: John Hartson claims Richarlison is a "shining light" for Everton

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, John Hartson identified Richarlison as Everton’s most valuable player, but thinks too much responsibility is being placed on his shoulders.

As such, the pressure on him to perform is having an adverse effect on his game.

The Brazilian has scored three goals in eight games so far, also providing an assist in the league, but his 17 shots in six league games are an indication that he may be trying too much himself – with Gylfi Sigurdsson’s 11 shots the next highest.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, Hartson said: “Richarlison for me is a really, really good talent. He is one of the shining lights for Everton.”

The fact the 21-year-old finished as the Toffees’ joint top-scorer last season underlines his importance to the team.

His tally of 14 Premier League goals in 2018/19 shows he is progressing well and making improvements to his game, and in this campaign he seems to have added a new dynamic to his game.

Two of his goals have been a result of late runs into the box where he has powered a header past the keeper but, as Hartson alludes to, such goals are only possible if the quality has been provided by his teammates, which has too often been missing.

Everton’s last Premier League match against Sheffield United was an example of that, with only seven successful crosses out of the 40 attempted.

Watch Everton Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

It is little surprise, therefore, that the forward has attempted, on average, 6.2 dribbles per league game this season, with a success rate of only 52% – thus highlighting that he is having to create chances himself, just as the former Wales international suggests.

“I like Richarlison, he’s a player. He’s one of those players in a team where the opportunities aren’t being created for him and he’s trying to do too much on his own. You’ve got to get your best players into areas where they can affect games.”

If Marco Silva can begin to mould the team around him and play in a way which brings the best out of him, Everton might just hit a rich vein of form.

Leicester City: Fans show huge love for Ben Chilwell after community work

Many Leicester fans have shown their love for Ben Chilwell after he tweeted about being at the first Leicester City in the Community event.

The young left-back spoke of how he enjoyed meeting so many members at the launch.

According to the club website, Leicester City’s “new charitable arm” will work continuously to improve the lives of the people across Leicestershire.

Apparently, the newly-named organisation will implement a new strategy aimed to inspire and empower people from around the region, with the community’s first-ever hub being situated on Filbert Way.

Chilwell, one of Leicester’s own and one of their proudest products in recent years by going on to play for England, said he was delighted to unveil the first of several community hubs with the participants and the staff.

The 22-year-old told  LCFC TV: “I’m really enjoying coming out and getting to see the community and what they get up to because we don’t get to see a lot of it.

“We’re in our little bubble at the training ground and we’re very focused on our jobs, which is obviously the priority, but it’s nice to come down and see what the local community’s up to.

“The stuff they’re doing here is great. I was just talking to a few of the youngsters about their Young Leaders stuff they take on at school and it’s just wicked to see young people so involved.

“Just looking at the pictures around the side, it seems like a very good community and Leicester is known to be a community club, so it’s good to see that that is the case.”

Unsurprisingly, many Leicester fans only had good things to say about Chilwell and were clearly endeared at him taking the time to put effort into the project.

Here are some of the responses below…
