Kevin Pietersen has been offered an unlikely route back into English cricket after an audacious bid from Leicestershire.ESPNcricinfo understands the club has offered Pietersen the chance to represent them in the NatWest Blast T20 competition. While Leicestershire are one of the most financially challenged clubs in the county game and are without a win in first-class cricket since September 2012, they have recently appointed a new chief executive in Wasim Khan who has ambitious plans for the future. While Pietersen’s camp initially declined the offer citing his lack of availability – he had been expected to play a full season of IPL and Caribbean Premier League – there is a possibility of a rethink. He is currently without a county after leaving Surrey by mutual agreement at the end of last season, although there have been stirrings of interest from several counties other than Leicestershire.”I approached his agent about his T20 availability,” Wasim said. “But he said it was unlikely he would play any T20 due to his full CPL commitments.”With his England career seemingly over, Pietersen had originally planned to maximise his opportunities in T20 leagues. But with Colin Graves having raised the possibility of an England recall Pietersen impresses in county cricket, it remains possible that he could revise his plans and spend more time in England. Aged 34, it is probably a case of now or never.Such a decision will depend on the outcome of talks between Pietersen and the key figures in England cricket as he seeks clarification on his position. If Paul Downton, the managing director of England cricket, and James Whitaker, the head selector, are as encouraging as Graves, it would be no surprise if Pietersen plays far more county cricket than had been envisaged.Pietersen later tweeted: “I’ve had quite a few offers over the last few days…lots of interest! Wait & see…”He has never disguised his desire to return to the England side, but it would be entirely understandable if he took some convincing that this latest carrot is genuine. If he does return, it remains unlikely that Leicestershire would become his new home. While Surrey have – publically, at least – played down the chances of re-signing Pietersen, the relationship between the club and the player remains good.He was not sacked at the end of last year, as has been claimed elsewhere, but had his registration cancelled in a mutually agreed deal that allowed both parties freedom at a time when his outspoken autobiography was about to be published.Surrey have subsequently signed Kumar Sangakkara, which has taken them close to the salary cap limit, but conversations with Pietersen continue. It would certainly send a strong statement of Pietersen’s intent if he gave up part or all of his deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL or St Lucia Zouks in the CPL.Substantial obstacles would remain to an England return – there were sections of his book that would make for some awkward dressing room situations – but it remains just about possible that there could be another chapter in Pietersen’s international story to come.

Batsmen Soumya Sarkar and Litton Das, and fast bowler Mohammad Shahid have earned maiden Test call-ups after they were picked for the first Test against Pakistan, from April 28 in Khulna. The national selectors also kept faith in Imrul Kayes, Shuvagata Hom and Shahadat Hossain, who had played in Bangladesh’s last Test series, against Zimbabwe last November.Rubel Hossain, who was rested for the lone T20, was part of the squad. However, there was no place for opening batsman Shamsur Rahman, as well as seamers Shafiul Islam and Al-Amin Hossain.Soumya was a shoe-in after making 175 runs in six World Cup games and 164, including an unbeaten 127, in the Pakistan ODI series. Litton, who was earlier picked in the T20 side but did not play, was rewarded for topping the National Cricket League batting charts with 1024 runs in seven matches at an average of 85.33, including five centuries and three fifties. He also finished as the second-highest run-getter in the Dhaka Premier Division with 686 runs in 16 matches. Shahid is a right-arm seamer who has taken 56 first-class wickets at an average of 32.19. He was the fourth-highest wicket taker among all pace bowlers, taking 18 wickets at an average of 36.11.BCB chief selector Faruque Ahmed said that Shahid’s ability to bowl long spells was what had won him a place in the Test squad. He also said that that Litton’s strong domestic form and Soumya’s recent form in ODIs had helped them seal their spots.”The newcomers are deserving of their spots through performances in domestic and international cricket,” Faruque said. “Mohammad Shahid is a strong lad capable of bowling long spells and he has been a consistent performer in first class games. Litton has scored heavily in the last couple of seasons while Soumya [Sarkar] has started strongly in ODIs.”With Imrul Kayes having struck 130 in the first innings in final Test against Zimbabwe in Chittagong, Faruque hinted that Soumya may not open if he gets selected in the XI.”He [Soumya] may not bat in the same position if he gets picked but he can give us a lot of depth in the batting order.”The selectors also showed faith in allrounder Shuvagata Hom despite his returns of 117 in six innings at an average of 23.40. He did not fare better with the ball either, managing only two wickets at an average of 47.Shahadat Hossain, who played the first Test against Zimbabwe, is currently Bangladesh’s highest wicket-taker in Tests among the available pace bowlers. He has taken only 13 first-class wickets this season but by bowling regularly in the Bangladesh nets, he kept himself on the selectors’ radar.Faruque, who didn’t speak directly to the media but was quoted by the BCB, said that the selectors preferred to give the players a decent run in the team.”We prefer to give players a reasonable run in the team and Imrul Kayes keeps his place by virtue of his performance in the last Test series. Shahadat Hossain has bowled very well in the National Cricket League and he has the experience.”Farque also credited spinners Taijul Islam and Jubair Hossain, who shared 28 wickets between them in the Zimbabwe Tests.”We consider Taijul as one of the best left-arm spin options for us in Tests and Jubair Hossain’s leg-spin is a valuable addition to our attack,” he said.Test squad: Mushfiqur Rahim (captain), Tamim Iqbal (vice-captain), Imrul Kayes, Litton Das, Mominul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah, Shuvagata Hom, Soumya Sarkar, Taijul Islam, Jubair Hossain, Rubel Hossain, Shahadat Hossain, Mohammad Shahid

Salter helps Glamorgan to first victory

Glamorgan secured their first LV= County Championship win of the season with 30 overs to spare on Thursday despite a spirited effort from Essex’s batsmen in Cardiff.

Glamorgan secured their first LV= County Championship win of the season with 30 overs to spare on Thursday despite a spirited effort from Essex’s batsmen in Cardiff. After their disappointing first-innings performance, many expected the visitors to fold quickly, but to their credit they took the game into the final session and if any of the other batsman could have shared a substantial partnership with Ryan ten Doeschate they could have pulled off an unexpected win.On a pitch which helped the quicker bowlers, Glamorgan were without their fourth seamer David Lloyd for all but 4.2 overs of the game, but the others performed admirably – especially young offspinner Andrew Salter in his first Championship game of the campaign – as the hosts secured an 89-run triumph.Resuming on 51 for 2 in pursuit of a victory target of 364, Dan Lawrence and nightwatchman Jamie Porter defied the Glamorgan attack for 57 minutes before Salter had Lawrence caught at mid-wicket.Salter then then took a return catch to remove James Foster, but Porter faced 93 balls before he was finally bowled by Michael Hogan for 34. Ten Doeschate then had useful support from their younger brigade, namely Kishen Velani and Callum Taylor.Twenty-year-old Velani was unlucky to play on to Hogan before 17-year-old Taylor, who had added 44 with ten Doeschate, edged to first slip. With ten Doeschate and Graham Napier at the crease at the tea interval, Essex needed 110 more runs and Glamorgan three wickets. But as soon as Hogan and Craig Meschede took the new ball Essex lost their last three wickets for just five runs. Napier fell for 8, Adeel Malik 2, and David Masters without troubling the scorers as Essex were dismissed for 274.After drawing their first four games and winning the fifth, Glamorgan are now well placed at third position in Division Two and unbeaten in all competitions.Glamorgan coach Toby Radford said: “I’m very pleased with the all-round performance, especially today, when we were without David Lloyd, our fourth seamer.”Although there was some help for the quicker bowlers, there were times when the pitch became placid and it was hard work. It was also good to see Andrew Salter contribute so well in only his first championship game of the season.”Essex coach Paul Grayson said: “I’m disappointed overall, especially the way we collapsed in the first innings, but pleased by the character of the young lads today. If we show the same fight for the rest of the season, we will be alright.”

James Whitaker will have gleaned little that he did not already know from his visit to New Road. Ian Bell made a century, the 50th of his career in first-class cricket, and Worcestershire collapsed miserably to an innings defeat, which is sadly not a rarity either. What the national selector wanted to see, you supposed, was a little more of Moeen Ali bowling, given that the purpose of the England offspinner’s return to red-ball county duty was to get in some overs. Yet Moeen’s ration, curiously, in a Warwickshire first innings spanning almost 92 overs was limited to six. This might look like an odd state of affairs, although Daryl Mitchell, the Worcestershire captain, should be cut some slack. He had Saaed Ajmal back for his first Championship match of the season, and having reaped the benefits of the Pakistan offspinner’s 63 wickets in nine matches last year he was hardly likely to ask him to play second fiddle to Moeen. In the event, Ajmal bowled 17 overs and conceded 82 runs without taking a wicket, which raised immediate questions over whether the powers he could summon up before his action was deemed illegal have gone. The remodelled version appeared to hold no mysteries for anyone.Moeen might have been given another chance in the second innings but none was required after Worcestershire were bowled out inside 33 overs for 80, the lowest all out total for the county since the match against Warwickshire in 2012 when they were dismissed for 60 and Warwickshire clinched the title.Bell, who made 111 before he was leg before to Jack Shantry as one of five wickets for the left-arm seamer, looked in good order. To say he has been dropped by England is not really accurate. His omission from the one-day series is more a case of allowing him a break from the treadmill after a relatively lean run of form in the Test side and to suggest he is fighting for a place in the Ashes series is an exaggeration. In any event, this was an impressive statement of his wellbeing. The way this match concluded may give the impression of a one-sided contest but Warwickshire had been 35 for 4 on Sunday evening before Bell had settled in and on the second morning a difficult opening session had to be negotiated.Bell was hit on the hand by one that jumped off a length from Shantry, who had Tim Ambrose caught behind by Ben Cox, standing up, and should have seen off Rikki Clarke by the same method when the allrounder was on 9, only for the wicketkeeper to let the ball slip through his hands. Clarke had a second escape before lunch, dropped at second slip off Charlie Morris. But Bell, a model of concentration and exemplary footwork, completed his hundred from 181 balls with three to midwicket off Ajmal in the fourth over after lunch. The evidence is that returning to county cricket usually brings Bell back into form. In his last nine appearances for Warwickshire, he has not failed to make at least a half-century in one innings and four times gone on to make a hundred, something he acknowledged afterwards.”Yes it has been a tricky few Tests but it is not that long ago that I made my last hundred for England and I hope to be part of that for a while to come,” he said. “I have been through highs and lows with England and you go in and out of form and it is nice sometimes to step away from the spotlight, work hard in the nets and hopefully with a bit of form I can get into the Ashes and hit the ground running.”Bell shared partnerships of 71 with Ambrose and 135 with Clarke, as Worcestershire’s optimism of Sunday evening began to dissolve. After Bell and Clarke had ensured that Warwickshire would have a lead, Keith Barker stretched it to 97 with an unbeaten 50 off 54 balls. It was a good lead on a pitch that you felt was likely to help Jeetan Patel as the sun grew in intensity but Worcestershire must have felt they could make a game of it, at least. Instead, they were abject and most of the damage was done even before the New Zealand offspinner became involved. Chris Wright, later to hold a very good catch from a steepler put up by Shantry, removed Mitchell and Richard Oliver in his second over. Moeen pulled him for six but was the bowled pushing at one from Barker and a sense of impending doom seemed to descend in that moment.Resistance was almost non-existent as Boyd Rankin bowled Tom Fell and then Alex Gidman, gaining a third success when Joe Clarke prodded at one outside off stump that Bell caught at third slip. Barker added a couple more to give him seven in the match and Patel wrapped things up, the match ending in the 33rd over of the innings when Charlie Morris hit Patel tamely to mid-off.Warwickshire, for the moment, climb to second in the table. Worcestershire, who have lost eight times in a row now to their nearest neighbours, have been competitive in several matches so far and have that win over Somerset in the bank. but they will need to shake this out of their system quickly.
