Middlesex's marquee approach to pre-season

Several counties have been practising in sub-zero temperatures, leaving footprints in the snow on their way to nets in a marquee of transparent plastic sheeting

This is the wintry scene that Eoin Morgan left behind as he set off for the razzamatazz of the Indian Premier League. While his team-mates were enduring near-freezing temperatures in Middlesex’s bubble at Radlett, he was setting off for the more hospitable cricketing climes of the IPL.Even the counties which preferred to prepare for the new season with trips to Barbados and Dubai, are now suffering one of the coldest England Springs on record, braving early-season friendlies which are bound to test the hardiest county stalwart.Middlesex can at least claim to be acclimatised. Along with the more thrifty of the counties, they have been practising from the outset in temperatures around zero, leaving footprints in the snow on their way to nets covered by a marquee of transparent plastic sheeting.Essex started a trend in 2012 by erecting a steel-framed structure on their square at Chelmsford and practising ‘outdoors’ on grass pre-season. By happy coincidence, the weather in 2012 was blazing hot. This year, with players facing snow and wind chill temperatures of -2C, Essex have been joined in the experiment by other counties such as Middlesex, Kent, Worcestershire and Glamorgan.Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s director of cricket, said he was thinking about ways of conducting covered outdoor practice last year. “Lo and behold they did it at Essex,” he said. “We went over there to have a look and it seemed to work.”Fraser’s logic about the advantages of Radlett is persuasive. But for all that Middlesex’s marquee at Radlett Cricket Club, their training facility, has proved to be a learning process for Fraser, the head groundsman, Nick Searle, and his New Zealander assistant, Regan Sinclair.Fraser said: “We’ve obviously made an investment at Radlett and want to base ourselves here. Nick, the groundsman, is as keen as mustard to help so we said we’d go ahead with it. In a sense it has been a challenge because you learn as you go along.”For example, you forget the fact that when it rains the water goes off the roof and collects in a small area. If you are on a little slope, the water can start to roll underneath. There was a frantic day last week when I had to rush out to Costco to buy towels to stop the water coming down. But we pulled the sides out slightly and it’s okay now.”Standing inside the marquee – Kent call it their “greenhouse” at Canterbury – there is constant noise as the wind rattles rope and material against the metal framework, but the light is surprisingly clear. In fact, in sunshine the transparent plastic has produced glare, so that the sightscreen has to be moved further back to reduce the effect. The struts throw shadows across the mown strips, but the batsmen hardly noticed. The Radlett marquee was erected in early February to ensure the soil had dried by the time net practice started a month later. The use of four hired industrial heaters helped the process after the heavy winter rain, and the players were glad to have one heater on duty during practice to keep them tolerably warm. Beyond the mouth of the nets the air remained almost freezing cold. Woolly hats and multi-layers were required for the stroll over the crusty snow to the middle. The surface played true and easy-paced and not dissimilar to an early season Championship pitch, though sounds were deadened and deliveries from fast bowlers occasionally proved hard for the eye to judge in overcast conditions. Fraser and his assistants, Richard Johnson, Richard Scott and Mark Ramprakash, were hoping the side sheeting could be removed, but the persistent cold ruled out that idea.Middlesex had used Loughborough University’s indoor elite centre for the previous few years, but this time Fraser decided to take a gamble for meaningful practice, having pre-empted any possible player mutiny by arranging a few days of light training in Spain. Fraser and the players felt the adventure in the cold was worthwhile.”There are two reasons for doing it,” Fraser said. “One is financial. If you send a group of 25 people to South Africa for a week or 10 days, it costs you the thick end of £40,000 or £45,000. This net here is probably going to cost us in the region of £12,000 to £15,000. And also I question whether training in Dubai or Barbados, places like that, on dead, shirt-front pitches in 40-degree heat prepares you for the sort of conditions we’re training in today, when it’s quite cold and soft underfoot and the ball is nipping around. It’s a completely different sensation of bat on ball.”So there a cricketing aspect and a financial aspect. I think this is going to be the way forward. If we don’t go on a pre-season tour and we use this, we can almost afford another player on the staff. There’s a trade-off angle too.”We just want to get out there on the square. We’ve been practising over the winter in indoor schools where there is bounce and consistency. It’s a completely different feel to what you experience in the middle. The earlier we can get our players used to what it’s like outside the better.”Middlesex allrounder Gareth Berg reckoned the experiment at Radlett, his home club, was a “huge help”. He said: “In an ideal world we would love to have been in Barbados playing a bit of cricket and to have a few cocktails but, in terms of moving forward and being a better team, this is much more important.”When the County Championship starts on April 10, Nottinghamshire (Barbados) meet Middlesex (Radlett marquee) at Trent Bridge in Division One’s opening round, while in Division Two there is Lancashire (Dubai) versus Worcestershire (Kidderminster marquee) and Glamorgan (Cardiff marquee) versus Northamptonshire (Barbados). The die-hards will take on the sunshine boys and it will be interesting to see what happens.

'I am innocent' – Sreesanth

Sreesanth protested his innocence on a day when he, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were remanded to another five days in police custody

Non-bailable charges framed against Sreesanth and his two Rajasthan Royals team-mates•AFP

In his first public statement since his arrest last week, Sreesanth has denied any wrongdoing. Sreesanth and his two Rajasthan Royals team-mates, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila, who were arrested on Thursday for their alleged involvement in spot-fixing, were remanded on Tuesday by a Delhi court to a further five days in police custody. They were charged by Delhi Police under three laws of the Indian Penal Code: Section 409, which deals with criminal breach of trust and is a non-bailable offence; Section 420 which deals with deal with fraud and cheating; and Section 120B, which deals with deals with criminal conspiracy. The Delhi Police had registered cases against the players under Sections 420 and 120B when they were arrested in the early hours of May 16. The charge under 409 was added to the list following Rajasthan Royals’ complaint against the three*.”I am innocent and have done no wrong,” Sreesanth said in a statement emailed by his lawyer, Rebecca John. “I have never indulged in any spot-fixing.” He said he was confident that his name would be cleared. “As a cricketer, I have learnt to take knocks along with accolades, in my stride. I recognise that I am going through a tough period in my life. I have utmost faith in our judicial process and I am confident that with time I will be proved innocent, and my honour and dignity will be vindicated and restored.”His statement came on a day when he was first sighted since his arrest, dressed in a blue T-shirt on his way to court. At the hearing, the police told the court that they were analysing the recorded conversations of players and bookies. Voice samples of the accused had been taken to match them with the recorded conversations. Additional Public Prosecutor Rajiv Mohan told the magistrate that during the investigation several new names had cropped up and their details would be submitted to the court in a sealed cover on Wednesday.Sreesanth’s advocate John opposed the plea for police remand saying no ground was made out for seeking his further custody. She said the agency had made all recoveries and confronted all the accused with one another for the past five days. The decision to charge the cricketers under Section 409, which carries a maximum punishment of life imprisonment, is seen as unusual as the law applies to a “criminal breach of trust” by anyone considered a “public servant” or “in the way of his business as a banker, merchant, factor, broker, attorney or agent.” There were, however, two possible lines of arguments that the law could be applied to cricketers, according to Vidushpat Singhania, sports law expert and principal associate, Lakshmi Kumaran and Sridharan. The first was that, “the player is acting as an agent, in this case of Rajasthan Royals – he has been entrusted with a property under the contract with Rajasthan Royals – and he has breached that trust.”The second argument that could be made was that a player could be considered a public servant because, “he has, in Sreesanth’s case for example, represented India and he has again, breached that trust they have in him.” In February 2011, the Supreme Court had, for example, upheld a Kerala High Court decision that the state’s cricket association officials could in any case, be considered “public servants”.Singhania said should this charge carry through and be upheld by the court, the punishment would be very stringent and could set a precedent in the future for cases involving fraud on the part of athletes, even without the introduction of a new law pertaining to fixing in sport. “There are provisions of criminal law that make it possible for it to be interpreted for the larger public good against a criminal offence.”However, it would appear that the first argument is the one being employed in this case. According to a report in the , Additional Public Prosecutor Rajiv Mohan said Section 409 was invoked because Sreesanth had violated the terms of his Royals’ contract. The contract and its financial benefits, he said, were decided upon as per Sreesanth’s “past experience and his match-winning abilities and it was an exclusive contract which granted him playing rights and performing rights, and the agreement did not allow performance for individual gain”.Sreesanth’s advocate John countered that he was not entrusted with any property, or with any dominion over property, to be charged under this offence. In a separate development, Mumbai Police announced it had made three fresh arrests, including that of Virendra Dara Singh Randhawa, also known as Vindoo, the son of famous Indian wrestler Dara Singh.”The first [arrest] is that of Alpesh Patel, who was a operator connected to these bookies. We have recovered Rs 1.28 crores (US$230,000) in cash from his premises,” Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime) in Mumbai, said.”[Vindoo] has also been arrested for links with bookies who have been arrested by us (on Saturday),” Roy said. “The third is Prem Taneja. There are in remand till May 24.”Meanwhile, reports that the government-run Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd suspended Sreesanth, who was employed as an assistant manager in its marketing division and posted at Irumpanam, near Kochi.04.15GMT, May 22: This article has been updated after details on the charges against the players emerged

Clarke's influence reduced in wake of Arthur sacking

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke has insisted he had nothing to do with the summary removal of Mickey Arthur. If that is so, it confirms him as a figure of much reduced influence in Australian cricket

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke has insisted he had nothing to do with the summary removal of Mickey Arthur. If that is so, it confirms him as a figure of much reduced influence in Australian cricket, after a sharp decline in the team’s fortunes that have been overseen as much by Clarke as by the dramatically deposed coach. It was not long after his return from a nightmarish India tour that Clarke decided not to continue as a selector, reducing his power by choice as a way of committing more time to his batting, his captaincy and his increasingly fragile back. During the tour Clarke had observed that he was feeling increasingly like a coach in the absence of the retired Michael Hussey and Ricky Ponting, a remark that did not reflect well on Arthur or other players expected to take the mantle, Shane Watson among them. Now the removal of Arthur and his replacement with Darren Lehmann as a kind of surrogate leadership figure as well as coach has underlined the fact that Clarke’s skills are limited to those of a gifted batsman and agile on-field tactician. Clarke was not informed of the move against Arthur until late in the decision-making process, and from now on is likely to have less of a say in wider issues around the team.”This a decision made by Cricket Australia, it’s had nothing to do with me personally, nothing to do with the players,” Clarke said. “For us and now Darren, it’s really important we look forward to what we have ahead of us and making sure we have success on this tour.Clarke defends Birmingham absence

Michael Clarke has said his chances of taking part in the Investec Ashes series would have been jeopardised had he forsaken back treatment in London to join the Australian team in Birmingham, where another breakdown in discipline led ultimately to Mickey Arthur’s sacking as coach.
The former Test captains Ian Chappell and Mike Atherton have been among those to question Clarke for being absent from the dressing room during the first match of the Champions Trophy against England, when a marker needed to be set down for performance and also team behaviour.
“It’s always tough when you miss a game for Australia but it’s probably even tougher when you’re captain and you’re injured,” Clarke said. “I did everything in my power to stay with the team even though I wasn’t playing, but unfortunately to give myself a chance to be right for the Ashes I had to go to London and use the machine and have specialist treatment that I’ve had before.
“It was tough watching the games on TV and talking to the boys on the phone. I would have loved to have been with the group even if I couldn’t play. That was quite difficult personally. It’s nice to be back with the group now. My goal is to make sure we’re performing as well as we can on the field.”

“We have no excuses. The Australian public and us as players want to have success. We know what the expectations and standards are off the field as well in regards to behaviour, and we have no excuses for not upholding those values. We’ve been very disappointed with our performances so far on this tour and we have to turn that around.”No doubt we have a less experienced team after losing Michael Hussey and Ricky Ponting, but that’s not an excuse. We’re very lucky in Australia, we’re brought up with a fantastic first-class system where standards apply there as well. So we know the behaviours that are required to be an Australian cricketer, we know what performances are expected of us, and we need to improve in both areas.”The rest of the job fostering a young team will now fall largely on Lehmann’s shoulders in concert with his assistant coaches, and there may also be some guidance for Clarke from Lehmann on how to lead a team in the hours between stumps and the following morning.”I’m certainly accountable for both on-field and off-field as captain of the team,” Clarke said. “It is partly your responsibility, there’s no doubt about that. I think with a young team and in life you make some mistakes. We’ve seen a couple of guys over the past 12 months make some errors in judgement but the thing for us as the senior players and the management of this team is to make sure we are pulling guys up when they don’t meet the standards and let guys know what is expected of you as an Australian cricketer.”I’ve said before this team is like no other, it’s a very special place and there’s a lot that comes with it. [The decision is] a shock to all the players. I think we understand though that we haven’t performed as well as we’d like. Our performances in India were unacceptable, we haven’t started this tour well and we know we expect higher of ourselves. We need to be the ones to turn that around.”It was hard not to notice the political machinations around the dressing room once players were aware a selector was constantly in their midst. David Warner was one player who worked assiduously at building his relationship with Clarke, more diligently it may now be argued than he did at scoring runs. However, neither Clarke nor the Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland were prepared to admit the dual roles of captain and selector had been hurtful to the building of the team.”I had a few conversations with James Sutherland and Pat Howard when I returned from India. The decision for me to stand down was brought to their attention a while back,” Clarke said. “It was just about timing – I think it gives me an opportunity to spend that time with the team. Being a selector is a full-time job and for me I’d much prefer to be concentrating on the boys and being able to help them as much as I possibly can in preparation and performance.”I think I have a fantastic relationship with the guys, the decision I’ve made is wholly and solely something I’ve felt personally. I felt it was the right time for me to step aside and focus on giving the team as much as I possibly can.”

Davies, Dernbach deliver Surrey win

Surrey made it two wins from three Friends Life t20 South Group matches by beating Kent by 31 runs at Canterbury with a second brilliant bowling performance inside three days.As they had in victory against Sussex at Hove on Friday night, Jade Dernbach and Azhar Mahmood led the way with the ball as Kent could score only 145 for 9 in reply to a Surrey total of 176 for 3, which was based around a fine 95 not out from Steven Davies. At the halfway point Kent seemed on course at 87 for 2, with Sam Northeast and Darren Stevens rattling along in a third-wicket stand that was to bring 55 runs in seven overs. But when Stevens was lbw to Jon Lewis for 30 from just 17 balls the Kent innings fell away alarmingly, with seven wickets going down for 46 runs in eight overs.Mahmood, playing against his former county, struck a vital blow midway through the collapse by bowling opener Northeast for 61 from 53 balls, an innings which contained two sixes and five fours. He also had Sam Billings caught early on to finish with 2 for 22 from his four overs while Dernbach, who bowled James Tredwell and had Mitchell Claydon caught on the long-off boundary in the final over after having Rob Key caught at long-on for 17 in his first spell, ended up with 3 for 22.Kent’s batsmen had no answer to their accuracy and variety and Zander de Bruyn also chipped in with a useful 2 for 24, having Alex Blake caught on the deep midwicket rope and Matt Coles bowled first ball aiming a desperate swipe. Captain Gareth Batty snared Ben Harmison with his offspin, caught at long-on, and Kent have now lost their first two games in the group.Davies batted throughout the Surrey innings, swinging offspinner Adam Riley for six as the 100 came up in the 13th over and also hitting 12 fours. He shared in stands of 66 with Jason Roy, who chipped Coles’ first ball back to the bowler to fall for 16 in the eighth over, 47 with Ricky Ponting and then 57 with Glenn Maxwell.Ponting, given a generous welcome by a 4,000-strong crowd, made 19 from 17 balls before skying an attempted big hit against Coles, who did superbly to run back and get under a swirling ball to complete a diving catch. The former Australia captain did hit one six out of the ground, high over the short boundary at long-leg from a slower ball by Coles which turned into an inviting waist-high full toss, but otherwise the Kent bowlers kept him quiet during his short innings.Coles was the pick of the Kent attack, picking up 2 for 20 from a four-over spell in the middle of the innings and clearly happier not to have bowl in the Powerplay overs or at the death, as the England Lions paceman has generally been asked to do previously in domestic one-day cricket.Maxwell injected some much-needed urgency into the Surrey batting effort when he arrived at the crease in the 14th over. Warming up with a straight four off Tredwell and then a pull for six off the England offspinner, the Australia allrounder later hit Claydon wide of long-on for a massive six before mishitting to extra cover in the last over for an 18-ball 32.Mahmood swung the only ball he faced, from Claydon, for six over long-on to give Surrey 95 runs from the second half of their innings, and in the end their 20-over score proved to be more than enough.

INÍCIO DO GANSOU
