Will Porterfield took 26 off an over from Chris Ashling while guiding Gloucestershire to an eight-wicket Friends Provident t20 victory over Glamorgan at Bristol. The Ireland captain smashed 65, his best Twenty20 score, as the Gladiators chased down a target of 154 with 4.2 overs to spare. He hit five fours and a six off the sixth over sent down by Ashling.Glamorgan’s innings of 153 for 7 was built around the contributions of Mark Wallace (34), Tom Maynard (36) and Jamie Dalrymple (38). Steve Kirby claimed 3 for 17 from his four overs. It never looked likely to be enough once Porterfield and Aaron Redmond (33) had launched Gloucestershire’s reply with a glut of boundaries, scoring 78 off the six powerplay overs.Redmond was content to play second fiddle as Porterfield cut loose to score his runs off just 27 balls, with seven fours and three sixes. When they were out James Franklin (29 not out) and Hamish Marshall (16 not out) kept the momentum going and there was never any doubt about the outcome.Glamorgan had begun their innings poorly after winning the toss as Jim Allenby was caught behind off Anthony Ireland in the second over and opening partner Mark Cosgrove followed with the total on 28.The burly Australian called for a quick single as Kirby appealed unsuccessfully for lbw against Wallace and was run out by some nifty footwork from wicketkeeper Steve Snell, who kicked the ball onto the stumps from close range.Wallace and Maynard added 57 in six overs, taking the Dragons to 42 for 2 off the first six and then to 85 before Wallace was brilliantly caught two-handed by the diving Snell off Kirby. He had faced 27 balls and hit three fours and a six.Maynard hit sixes off Richard Dawson and Redmond before hitting a full-toss from Dawson straight to Redmond at deep midwicket. His 23-ball innings also featured three fours.Dalrymple smacked two sixes off the same Ireland over putting Glamorgan in sight of a 160-plus total. But Kirby removed him and Gareth Rees and the Dragons could score only five off their last two overs.

Newcastle: Wood was Howe’s unsung hero

Newcastle won for the third time in succession in the Premier League as they beat Aston Villa 1-0 at St. James’ Park on Sunday.

Kieran Trippier scored the only goal of the game as his free-kick deflected in off Emi Buendia to fly past Emi Martinez and into the back of the net.

The defence will get credit for keeping a clean sheet, but the attacking players put the pressure on Aston Villa early on to help the Magpies get in front. Ryan Fraser looked to test Lucas Digne quickly down the flank and never stopped running in the first half, whether that was in behind to make runs or defensively to close players down.

Better than Fraser

One player who was better than Fraser in attack, however, was striker Chris Wood. He may still be looking for his first goal in Newcastle colours but he certainly made his presence felt with an impressive performance against Steven Gerrard’s side.

The former Burnley man offered the Magpies a focal point at the top end of the pitch that they sometimes lack with Callum Wilson in the team. In the Premier League this season, the ex-Bournemouth striker has won 27 aerial battles, with a success rate of 38%, in 18 matches.

Wood, meanwhile, won 13 in just 90 minutes against Villa on Sunday. He won 13 of his 15 aerial duels – a success rate of 86.6% – and this shows how strong the machine is in the air, particularly given that he was up against 6ft 4 Tyrone Mings and Calum Chambers.

Fraser lost three of his four duels in total and only completed 50% of his attempted long passes and crosses, which shows that – whilst he was still key to the win – Wood had the edge on him in the front three.

The New Zealand international did lose his three ground duels, meaning that he won 72% of his battles in total, but his quality in the air made up for any deficiencies on the deck. As per SofaScore, he completed his one long pass attempt and registered a key pass, which shows that he was able to produce some quality in possession to go along with the physical prowess he provided the team with.

Therefore, he was Howe’s unsung hero in the match as he puts in the hard graft against the centre-backs to make himself a reliable outlet for the team. This was pivotal for Newcastle as they held on to their lead at the end of the game as it allowed them to play the ball long for him to alleviate pressure from constant Villa attacks, with his headers/flick-ons pushing the team up the pitch.

Somerset seal semi-final spot

Somerset assured themselves of a spot in the semi-finals of the Clydesdale Bank 40 when they beat Surrey by 64 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method at Taunton

Somerset assured themselves of a spot in the semi-finals of the Clydesdale Bank 40 when theybeat Surrey by 64 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method, with more than four overs to spare, at Taunton. The hosts produced a powerful batting display in a rain-affected match that wasreduced to 36 overs a side.Having been put in Somerset openers Marcus Trescothick and Craig Kieswetter raced on to 32 before Trescothick was out for 8, caught at midwicket by Matthew Spriegel off Chris Tremlett from the final ball of the third over.Kieswetter flayed 18, including a six and three consecutive fours, off the fifth over, bowled by Tremlett to take Somerset on to 55 and continued the plunder to bring up his half-century with a cover drive off Jade Dernbach in the 11th over. His fifty came from only 29 balls and included seven fours and two sixes. The keeper brought up the Somerset hundred in style, lofting legspinner Chris Schofield over midwicket in the 12th over. During the partnership between Kieswetter and Zander de Bruyn the players left the field twice for heavy rain as a result of which the game was reduced to 36over per side.De Bruyn went to his own 50 in the 19th over and off the first ball of the next over he brought up the 150 with a straight drive off Schofield. The bowler exacted revenge with his very next ball, however, having him caught at midwicket. Between them the third wicket pair had added 87 in 12 overs.Kieswetter was next to perish with the total on 156, stumped by Steve Davies off Schofield for 79. But James Hildreth was then joined by Jos Buttler, who continued his rich vein of one-day form. With an array of explosive and innovative shots, including a huge six over long-on off Dernbach, Buttler raced to his 50, off just 31 balls. The 19-year-old cracked successive sixes high over cover when Spriegel was introduced into the attack for the penultimate over. Though he was bowled off the next ball for 87, which came off 46 balls and included nine fours and four, he had already added 123 in just over 13 overs with Hildreth. Somerset eventually reached 290 for 6, Hildreth bowled for 38 by Tremlett offthe last ball of the innings, having played his part in helping to add 105 off the last 10 overs.Chasing a revised target of 292 for victory off 36 overs, Surrey lost their captain Rory Hamilton-Brown, caught by Pete Trego off Alfonso Thomas’ third ball of the innings. With the score on 23, Thomas also had a hand in the second wicket when he ran Steve Davies out in the fifth over.Mark Ramprakash came in to join Stewart Walters and the pair took control of the situation and brought up the 50 in the ninth over. Ramprakash was in fine form and hit the first six of the Surrey innings when he lofted Trego high over the midwicket boundary in the 13th over. Walters had moved on to 45 when he was bowled by Murali Kartik in the 16th over with the score on 91. Kartik then accounted for Jason Roy in the same over, stumped by Kieswetter.New batsman Spreigel brought up the hundred with an off-driven boundary from Trego in the 17th and after 20 overs Surrey had moved on to 125 for 4. Ramprakash looked threatening and had moved on to 73 when he hoisted the first ball of the 26th over, bowled by Trego, high to deep extra cover where Buttler took the chance. The England Lion struck again in the same over when he accounted for Schofield leg before wicket and going into the final 10 overs Surrey still needed 121 for victory. When Thomas gratefully received a caught-and-bowled chance from new batsman Gareth Batty and Tremlett was run out the visitors chances looked even slimmer.Spriegel and Dernbach added 44 for the ninth wicket before Dernbach was caught by Buttler for 31 and two balls later De Bruyn bowled Cheetham to wrap things up, Surrey all out for 227 in the 32nd over.

Arsenal will make Calvert-Lewin push

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been the subject of interest from Arsenal for ‘years’ and the Gunners will ‘push’ to sign him this summer.

That’s according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown, who was speaking to GiveMeSport.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The lowdown

The Athletic revealed in January that Calvert-Lewin is one of Arsenal’s primary targets in the striker position.

The club’s coaching staff are apparently strong admirers and they see his personality ‘as a good fit for Arsenal’s current squad’.

The player himself would reportedly be open to moving to The Emirates as he looks to fulfil his career ambitions, which include featuring for England at the Qatar World Cup.

But Calvert-Lewin isn’t the only Everton attacker Arsenal are monitoring. Transfer insider Dean Jones has heard that they could make a move for Richarlison too.

The latest

Brown is confident that Calvert-Lewin will be a bigger priority than his team-mate given that Arsenal have tracked him for such a lengthy period.

“I know for a fact that Arsenal like and have liked Calvert-Lewin for quite a few years, even before he was scoring regularly in the Premier League,” he said.

“So, if I was to guess, I’m pretty sure they’ll make a bigger push for Calvert-Lewin than they will Richarlison in the summer.”

The verdict

How much could Everton get for the £72,000-per-week forward?

Well, the figure mooted by The Athletic in January was £60million, which would be the second largest sale in Everton’s history (behind Romelu Lukaku’s £76.2million switch to Manchester United in 2017).

Could The Toffees still command that in the summer off the back of a lean season for Calvert-Lewin, who’s scored one non-penalty goal in 13 appearances? Perhaps, given that the 25-year-old is still under contract for another three years and has shown he’s capable of far better.

Indeed, he hit a combined 29 goals across the 2019/20 and 2020/21 Premier League seasons.

Everton supporters had ‘got it in for’ the striker against Manchester United last time out after he lost a couple of aerial battles in the first half, but some may still be sad to go in light of his previous goalscoring feats.

Indeed, in the words of former Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti, he’s a striker with ‘outstanding’ gifts, while the Royal Blue podcast have labelled him a ‘monster’.

In other news, Kevin Phillips has been disappointed by one Everton star in particular.

Strauss silences the doubters

It seems absurd that Andrew Strauss’s place in England’s one-day line-up was being debated on the day he struck 126 to set-up a 2-0 series lead against Pakistan

Andrew McGlashan at Headingley12-Sep-2010

It seems absurd that Andrew Strauss’s place in England’s one-day line-up was being debated on the day he struck 126 to set-up a 2-0 series lead against Pakistan, but during the lunch interval of the second one-day international a panel of experts on TV selected their World Cup squads and Strauss wasn’t in the 15.Neither, for that matter, was Jonathan Trott, who is England’s in-form batsman of the moment in all formats and added 146 with Strauss at Headingley. But it was the absence of the current captain that provoked debate as he notched up his fifth one-day international hundred and second in three matches. The panel’s reasoning behind Strauss’s omission is his lack of runs straight down the ground and how he will adapt on the slower pitches in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.Yet since returning to the one-day side in early 2009 – at that time because there was no other choice following the messy end to Kevin Pietersen’s captaincy stint – Strauss has averaged 42.03 in 32 matches compared to a career mark of 35.06. He knows he will be the man leading England at the World Cup and the numbers back up that decision.”All I can do is do my talking with the bat and help England to win cricket matches,” he said. “Other people can talk as much as they like, it’s pretty irrelevant to me. I’ve worked very hard on trying to expand my game and it’s important I can lead by example. I’ve been in good form all summer and that helps because things tend to come a bit more naturally. I’m very happy with my game and even more happy that we are continuing to win.”However, his innings wasn’t without two moments of good fortune and Pakistan were convinced he’d been caught behind on 38 when Umar Gul nipped one back off the seam. Kamran Akmal held a fine catch but Billy Doctove turned down the appeal and a few words were exchanged between batsman and bowler. It led to Shahid Afridi calling for the introduction of the umpire review system for major one-day series.”Definitely it would be good in matches like this and in big series like this,” he said. “It is important that it’s in cricket now. I know in Twenty20 you don’t have much time but in one-dayers you would.”But on this occasion it wasn’t a clear-cut decision even on replays so the UDRS may not have even overturned the on-field call and Strauss was very content about standing his ground. “I wasn’t sure if it had hit my glove,” he said. “Nothing has changed in cricket, the umpires are there to make a decision and they did that.”Strauss was given a much more obvious life on 23 when Mohammad Irfan, the seven-foot pace bowler, couldn’t take a simple catch at short fine-leg. Irfan later limped off with cramp for the second match running and Afridi was far from impressed with his new recruit.”I’m really disappointed with this guy,” he said. “Cricket is not all about just batting and bowling, fielding is very important and maybe if he’s good in the field I will give him a chance otherwise I’m not happy.”However, Pakistan don’t have many other pace options in their squad. Wahab Riaz would be a controversial selection considering his links to the ongoing spot-betting allegations while Abdul Razzaq, who has been left out of the opening two matches, is due to undergo an MRI scan on his troublesome back in the next few days.

Carille vê melhora do Corinthians e descarta favoritismo no Dérbi

Hoje gostei do time, bem postado. teve o primeiro tempo contra o Novorizontino, Santo André.
