Ntini relishes prospect of 100th cap

At Centurion on Wednesday, an African icon will reach a very special milestone

Andrew McGlashan in Potchefstroom13-Dec-2009At Centurion on Wednesday, an African icon will reach a very special milestone. When, back in March 1998, Makhaya Ntini became the first black South African to represent his country, few could have predicted that he would still be going strong more than a decade later. And yet, he now stands on the cusp of 100 Test caps, an achievement matched by only six out-and-out fast bowlers.”It’s something you can only dream about,” Ntini told Cricinfo during South Africa’s training camp in Potchefstroom. “You look at most fast bowlers and they never pass 100 caps. For me, being a fast bowler, it’s something that you start thinking about once you reach 70-odd games. Every player wants to achieve it.”For me, playing 100 times for my country – from a time when you thought, as a black cricketer, it wouldn’t be possible to penetrate and be successful among a white-dominated sport, it gives a lot of inspiration to younger people. If I can do it, so can they.”These days, Ntini is among the most prominent role-models in his country. Only last week, he was in Cape Town, taking part in the draw for the 2010 Football World Cup. But a decade ago, when he launched his career, he himself had role-models to look up to – and in most cases, to play alongside.”Allan Donald, Shaun Pollock, Lance Klusener, Brian McMillan. Those were the main players, then I became the fifth one,” said Ntini. “I took all the advice and practised it. When one retired, my chances came along, and I knew injuries would come along. That kept me going. And to have a captain like Hansie Cronje, the person who told me I was on a learning curve. He said: ‘Stay fit, stay focused and the chance will come’.”Ntini was just 20 years old when he took the field at Newlands for his first Test against Sri Lanka, and to this day, the moment he was presented with his cap remains his proudest moment. “When you are stood out there on the field before play, the captain pulls out the cap and says: ‘Here’s your first one. Hopefully the first of many.'”In terms of onfield action, however, few memories can contend with his stunning performance at Lord’s in 2003, when he became the first South African to claim ten wickets on the most famous ground in the world, in a performance that propelled his country to a memorable innings victory.”Lord’s, obviously, was special because it was a long wait,” said Ntini. “Four years previously I spoke to Corrie van Zyl [the assistant coach] and said if I get my chance I want to leave my name on the board. Then, when I played in 2003, he reminded me of that and told me it was my chance. After the first five-wicket haul he tapped me on the shoulder and said: ‘There are only nine players who have done a ten-for.’Ntini was made to wait for his tenth of the match, as Andrew Flintoff clubbed a memorable but futile century, but eventually, with two wickets remaining Steve Harmison holed out to Andrew Hall, and Ntini had made his notch in history. “When the moment arrived I couldn’t even feel myself because everywhere I looked the crowd were standing and clapping,” he said. “I had to kiss the ground of Lord’s. It was moment I had been waiting for.”

Spurs make contact regarding de Vrij deal

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Stefan de Vrij to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian media outlet FcInterNews.it, who claim that all three of Spurs, Newcastle United and Barcelona have contacted Mino Raiola – the agent of the Inter Milan defender – regarding the possibility of a move for the centre-back.

It is claimed that, while the Serie A side are hoping to extend the 29-year-old’s current deal until the summer of 2025, the club’s current financial difficulties are proving to be a stumbling block in bumping the Netherlands international’s wages up to the proposed €4.5m-per-year (£3.8m-per-year).

The report then goes on to state any potential move by Antonio Conte’s side would not come in the January transfer window, but rather in the summer, when, with just one year remaining on his current deal, Inter may well decide to cash in on De Vrij.

Better than De Ligt

Considering just how important a part of Conte’s Scudetto-winning Inter side De Vrij was last season, it is easy to understand why the Italian manager is so eager to secure a deal that would see the centre-back follow his own path to North London.

Indeed, over his 32 Serie A appearances last term, the £40.5m-rated defender helped his side keep 11 clean sheets, scored one goal and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 0.9 tackles, 57.4 passes and winning 60% of his duels per game.

These returns saw the player who Kees Kwakman dubbed “one of the best defenders in the world” earn an extremely impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.03 – ranking him as Conte’s 10th-best player in the top flight of Italian football last time out.

Furthermore, Kwakman also stated his belief that De Vrij is “more stable” in the heart of a defence than another of Tottenham’s reported transfer targets, Matthijs de Ligt – not to mention one who, considering Inter’s reported willingness to cash in on the 29-year-old, would more than likely a much cheaper option for Fabio Paratici to pursue.

As such, it would appear as if the £116k-per-week defender would be a better fit all round for Tottenham in comparison to the Juventus youngster, although, whether or not Conte is willing to wait until next summer in order to bring in a fresh face in the position is another matter altogether.

Simmons century inaugurates first floodlit game

A round-up of the opening day’s action of the second round of the WICB Four-Day Competition 2009-10

Cricinfo staff16-Jan-2010Lendl Simmons lit up the first ever day-night first-class fixture in the West Indies with an entertaining century to take Trinidad and Tobago to 302 for 7 against Guyana at the Vivian Richards Stadium. Simmons made 104 while Jason Mohammed fell 13 short of his century. The pair came together with the score on 39 for 2 and added 143. They took T&T to 133 for 2 at lunch but after resumption, when on 61, Mohammed retired after complaining of cramps. However, the pink ball started to assist the spinners and seamers and in this period, Simmons managed to reach his century, off 135 balls. He went for 104, caught by Assad Fudadin and soon after, T&T lost another wicket. Mohammed returned, added another 26 to his score before he was caught in the deep. T&T suddenly lost their way and were at 264 for 6, before Denesh Ramdin and Rayad Emrit added some stability with a stand of 48 for the seventh wicket. Ramdin, who ended on an unbeaten 43, was lucky to be dropped on 35 by Derwin Christian. It was a funny old scorecard for Leeward Islands with only three double-digit scores in their disappointing score of 188 against Jamaica at Warner Park. David Bernard and Nikita Miller shared most of the spoils to bundle out Leewards. The home team was in trouble in the morning session when they were reduced to 52 for 4. Runako Morton and Omari Banks started a recovery with a stand of 51 for the fourth wicket. Morton hit nine fours and a six in his 60 before he was dismissed, caught at first slip off Odean Brown. Devon Thomas joined Banks in another recovery stand of 69. Banks hit four fours and a six off 112 balls before he nicked Bernard with the score on 172. But that was followed by another collapse as Leewards lost their last four wickets for 16 runs. Bernard finished with 4 for 38. Jamaica had a jittery start to their innings as well when they lost Shawn Findlay – caught brilliantly at square leg by Anthony Martin – and Xavier Marshall. They ended the day trailing by 139.Barbados took control on the opening day in Charlestown, restricting Combined Campuses and Colleges to 213. The spinners Nikolai Charles and Ryan Hinds shared seven wickets between them to run through the line-up. CCC chose to bat first but never really took control. They went to lunch at 67 for 2, before Barbados dominated. The CCC innings was built around Nekoli Parris’ solid 47 and a patient 45 by Romel Currency. Charles struck in quick succession and CCC suddenly lost three wickets for nine runs. Parris, who hit six fours, was caught at forward short-leg, captain Floyd Reifer was caught in the same position off Kemar Roach. Currency was dropped on 29 by Hinds and went on to resist for close to four hours. He added 48 for the seventh wicket with Ryan Austin before Hinds broke the stand, having Austin caught at slip. Hinds took 3 for 41 while Charles took 4 for 46. Barbados lost the wicket of Dale Richards early and ended a satisfying day at 33 for 1.

Jaques blasts 171 in tight New South Wales win

Phil Jaques blasted his way out of a lean patch with the second highest score in Australia’s domestic one-day history to help New South Wales to a six-run win over Queensland

Phil Jaques blasted his way out of a lean patch with the second highest score in Australia’s domestic one-day history to help New South Wales to a six-run win over Queensland. Jaques batted throughout the innings for an unbeaten 171 before Craig Philipson’s maiden hundred gave the Bulls the chance of an upset win.It was fitting that Philipson guided the chase after he dropped Jaques on 79 and 120 and although he fell for an even 100 near the end, the Bulls got to the final over requiring 17. A six from Ben Cutting, whose 42 from 18 balls sparked Queensland, brought the target within reach but the debutant Trent Copeland held his nerve to bowl full and straight and get the Blues home. The star of the day was unquestionably Jaques, who 18 months ago was a member of the Test team but has battled to regain his best touch since having back surgery in late 2008. He started cautiously but began to find the gaps with ease and struck 20 fours and two sixes in his 143-ball stay, which was second only to Jimmy Maher’s 187 on the list of domestic 50-over innings and gave him three entries in the top ten of all time.It was the sort of dominant performance that will remind the Australian selectors of his presence, as well as pushing the Blues into third place on the competition table and giving them a good chance of pressing for a spot in the final. Cutting was the only Queensland bowler who proved a real danger for New South Wales and he collected 3 for 45 in the innings of 4 for 293.In reply, the Bulls were wobbling at 4 for 58 when Philipson and Nathan Reardon started the fightback. Their 83-run stand kept the run-rate at an acceptable level before a pair of strikes from Nathan Bracken, who is gradually gaining momentum after having a knee operation, pegged Queensland back.Cutting completed his excellent all-round game with a tail-end blitz but he didn’t have enough support at the end, when the Bulls needed 34 from the final two overs. Queensland remain on the top of the table, one game clear of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, with two rounds left.

Tottenham make Kessie proposal

According to a report by Italian source SportMediaset, via TUTTOmercatoWEB, Tottenham Hotspur have now made an early proposal to sign AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie in January.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye Kessie…

As per recent reports, Tottenham are firm contenders to sign Milan’s star player as his contract continues to wind down at the San Siro.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As things stand, he is able to negotiate pre-contract summer moves for later in 2022 and the Lilywhites have been linked to signing him as a free agent.

However, sources have also suggested that Tottenham could try and seal Kessie before that with a permanent January move this month not entirely ruled out.

Italian reporter Sandro Sabatini, speaking on Radio Radio earlier this week (via Calciomercato.it), claimed that Milan could green light his mid-season sale for just €10 million (£8.3m) as name drops Spurs as suitors specifically.

The Latest: Spurs make proposal…

In an update, SportMediaSet (via TMW) say that Paratici and Tottenham would ‘like to take him already’ this month rather than as a free agent in the summer.

According to their information, the Lilywhites have already made a proposal – offering club record signing Tanguy Ndombele in a player-swap deal.

However, the Rossoneri have apparently rejected this offer from Spurs due to the Frenchman’s wages – said to be around €10 million (£8.3m) a season.

The Verdict: Blow for Spurs…

As Ndombele looks out-of-favour under Conte, with reports suggesting he may even be allowed to move on this month for the right offer, Tottenham could have killed two birds with one stone by exchanging the 25-year-old.

As such, Milan’s rejection comes as a slight blow given Paratici’s serious interest in their £43.2 million-valued man and it’s safe to say Spurs could seriously do with Kessie’s signing before January 31.

He has racked up a noteworthy 19 goals and seven assists since the start of last campaign, thriving further forward under Stefano Piolo in that time.

Tottenham arguably need an injection of midfield threat going through the middle and it’s been a point of contention they haven’t managed to replace former star Christian Eriksen.
