The series is already in the bag but a confident Ricky Ponting has reminded everyone that there is a game to go and that Australia intend to win it. After regaining their No. 1 ranking in style – they beat England 6-1 and retained the Champions Trophy – Ponting felt the current series win proved his side was on the right track again.”We want to finish the tour on a very positive note,” he said after Australia’s training in Mumbai. “We’ve played some excellent cricket over the past few weeks and, while the series has been decided, it’s certainly not over as far as we’re concerned. To me 5-2 sounds a lot better than 4-3 does, so we’re going to go ahead full steam.””I said to the players before this series that I didn’t care who it was – even if we had 11 players – but if we all contributed in each game, we would be very hard to beat,” he said. “If you look back at our performances, we’ve had a few guys who have contributed more than the Indians have. That’s been a big reason for our success.”Ponting had already compared the series win to Australia’s Champions Trophy and World Cup wins but still found time to praise a “special” success.”There are a lot of other teams at full strength who come to India and struggle to win, but we’ve come here with nine guys out the team injured and still managed to win,” he said. “It is a great achievement and everyone in the team and support staff should be very proud.”Australia’s campaign in India was ravaged by injury even before it started with four first-choice players – Nathan Bracken, Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin and Callum Ferguson – unavailable for selection. Their troubles grew more severe during the tour as Brett Lee, James Hopes, Tim Paine, Peter Siddle and Moises Henriques also picked up injuries and had to be flown home. But that did not deter them from playing as a unit and winning consecutive games to clinch the series.”Every injury creates another positive in that you get a young guy out there exposed to the international level,” said Ponting. “We’ve had a lot of guys who have that experience now. Cameron White’s got a lot of experience under his belt, Ben Hilfenhaus and Doug Bollinger have got a few games, [Clint] McKay got a game, Nathan Hauritz is really coming of age as a spinner, Shaun Marsh is back at the top, Shane Watson’s got a lot of cricket under his belt.”All of a sudden we had a side that looked very inexperienced but now we’re starting to take shape like an Australian side that’s been looking as recognised over the past few years. There’s a World Cup 12 months away that we’re starting to build towards and this squad we’ve used over the recent past should keep us in really good shape.”

Sussex target Monty Panesar

Sussex have expressed interest in signing Monty Panesar, whose career is now at a crossroads after a barren season

Cricinfo staff06-Nov-2009Sussex have expressed interest in signing Monty Panesar , whose career is now at a crossroads after a barren season. Panesar’s county of birth, Northamptonshire, have told him he is free to leave.”When there are players of Monty’s proven ability available I would expect [coach] Mark Robinson to be banging on my door to see what chances there are of us signing them,” Sussex chief executive Dave Brooks told the . “We are trying to improve our squad and he would definitely do that.”Panesar, 27, was dropped from the England Test team after the first Ashes Test at Cardiff, despite his match-saving effort with the bat on a tense final evening, and lost his central contract. His spot as England’s No.1 spinner has gone to Graeme Swann and in 13 County Championship matches this season Panesar took just 18 wickets at an expensive 59.44.

Tottenham offered Georginio Wijnaldum

Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum on loan in January, according to 90min.

The Lowdown: Wijnaldum at PSG

Wijnaldum, labelled as ‘incredible’ by journalist Connor Dunn, left Anfield over the summer to sign for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

The 85-cap Netherlands international is thought to be on over £300,000-a-week in France but has started just 10 games in all competitions under Mauricio Pochettino.

His representatives are thought to be working on a January exit as a result of his lack of game time, and a return to England could well be on the cards.

The Latest: Spurs offered Wijnaldum’s services

90min shared a story on Thursday regarding Wijnaldum’s future and the chances of a possible exit.

Within their report, they claimed that the 31-year-old representatives have contacted several Premier League clubs over the possibility of a loan move.

Tottenham are one of those who have been approached, with Fabio Paratici and co not yet dismissing the idea of a January transfer.

The Verdict: Avoid?

It seems as if Spurs are still to decide whether or not to move for Wijnaldum, however, they could be better off looking at the bigger picture and snubbing the chance to take the Dutch international on a temporary basis.

Yes, he has plenty of Premier League, Champions League and international experience, however, he is on mega-money and is now the wrong side of 30.

Antonio Conte may want to add to his midfield ranks with Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Winks linked with exits, but moving for someone like Franck Kessie on a permanent cut-price deal could be the smarter option.

He’s seven years Wijnaldum’s junior and a winter window move could well be on the cards according to a Spurs insider, so prioritising the Ivorian over the PSG man could be a smart decision in the long run.

Newcastle transfer news on Felix

Joao Felix is reportedly now ‘tempted’ by a potential transfer to Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: The boy wonder…

Just a couple of years ago, Felix was one of if not the hottest youngsters on the planet, winning the Golden Boy award back in 2019.

It was the same year that he left Benfica for Atletico Madrid in a whopping £113m move, but so far the Portuguese international has struggled to really live up to that price tag.

At Atletico, he has only managed to score 20 goals in 88 games in total over all competitions across the last three seasons (Transfermarkt), and so could seek a move away in order to reignite his career.

The Latest: Newcastle temptation

As per AS (via Sport Witness), Felix is now ‘tempted by Newcastle’, who will be looking to strike a relationship with agent Jorge Mendes in order to seal a deal.

Money is not thought to be an issue for the new mega-rich owners, while Leeds United are another team mentioned that could use their riches if a takeover ends up going through at Elland Road.

The Verdict: Impossible?

Of course, the St. James’ Park faithful will have to make sure that they avoid relegation from the Premier League down to the Championship before they can start even thinking about trying to sign a player like Felix.

Sure, he has struggled to live up to expectations in Madrid, but at 22 years of age, he can still fulfil his big potential.

Former top-flight player Don Hutchinson believes that he ‘could be one of the best in the world’, and he certainly showed signs with his goals at youth level and with the first team at Benfica.

Not just his ability in front of goal, Felix is a player that can be so dangerous on the pitch when he gets going, as his manager Diego Simeone has cited his speed and explosiveness.

Nonetheless, it will still be very difficult for the Tyneside outfit to sign him, especially if he is put up for sale by Atletico, as a whole host of top European clubs will surely then be queuing up.

Ambati Rayudu shines in dull draw

A match heading for a dull draw and crying out for cricketing euthanasia finished amid the farcical scene of all nine Mumbai fielders forming a slip cordon in the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium

Siddarth Ravindran in Hyderabad04-Dec-2009
Scorecard
A match heading for a dull draw and crying out for cricketing euthanasia finished amid the farcical scene of all nine Mumbai fielders forming a slip cordon in the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. By the time the mandatory overs started (103rd over onwards, when the match can be called off), Hyderabad had lost only four wickets and Mumbai didn’t fancy playing on, happy with the three points for a first-innings lead. Ambati Rayudu was on 65 at that time, and perhaps in expectation of his century, Hyderabad wanted to continue on a still benign track. At that stage, Rayudu and Abhinav Kumar were well on their way to Hyderabad’s first century stand of the season and both batsmen were collecting runs with ease. Mumbai were clearly irritated by having to spend extra time on the field, and when Abhinav was bowled for 49 in the 106th over, he was given a warm send-off by the bowler Abhishek Nayar and wicketkeeper Vinayak Samant. The field was pushed well back to cut off the boundaries whenever Rayudu was on strike after that, but he had calmly progressed to 75 when left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla started the 111th over. Abdulla gave the ball plenty of flight each delivery in the short duel with Rayudu; the first waslashed back at the bowler who grassed a tough catch, on the next Rayudu charged out and unleashed a lofted on-drive for four, but he perished on the third miscuing a catch to midwicket. Cue over-the-top celebrations from Mumbai, with Abdulla making it a point to run the length of the pitch and joyously race across the batsman as he was trudging back to the pavilion.Mumbai’s annoyance increased as Hyderabad continued to bat, and their mood didn’t improve when a short ball was smashed into substitute Omkar Khanvilkar’s back at forward short leg. For the final two overs from Nayar (the 116th and 118th), Mumbai decided to have an umbrella field, and every dot ball – even ones that harmlessly sailed to the keeper – was boisterously cheered. After the final over of the match (119th) the Hyderabad side came out to shake hands with the opposition, but the Mumbai camp was not interested, sauntering off to their dressing room, much to the chagrin of Hyderabad coach Venkatapathy Raju.Raju was happier though with the dogged effort from his batsmen, who played out more than four sessions to ensure the home side continued their trend this season of conceding the first-innings lead but clinging on for a draw.Mumbai looked at their most threatening early in the day. In the morning’s fifth over, Dhawal Kulkarni had a big lbw appeal turned down and an edge off Amol Shinde flew past a diving second slip. Only nine runs had been added on the final day, when birthday boy Ajit Agarkar induced a nick off Shashank Nag which was spilled by Sahil Kukreja at second slip. The chances became scarcer as the day progressed, and though Mumbai produced a couple of breakthroughs before lunch, there was no final day collapse. The highlight of the morning was a superb catch from Aavishkar Salvi at long-on to dismiss Nag; the fielder initially misjudged it andran in but recovered well to run back and complete the catch. That brought in Rayudu, who was initially circumspect, taking 22 deliveries to get off the mark. When Mumbai pressed with four fielders crouching around the bat, Rayudu started to play his strokes: a backfoot slash for four was followed by a down-the-track drive to the long-onboundary in one Ramesh Powar over. Just as the odds on a draw started shortening Mumbai dismissed Anirudh Singh to leave Hyderabad at 144 for 4, with more than 40 overs remaining. Rayudu and Abhinav, however, ended Mumbai’s hopes of taking five (or six points) with a defiant partnership.Mumbai were disappointed at not being able to deliver the knockout blow after keeping Hyderabad on the ropes for the first three days of the match. Their captain Wasim Jaffer laid the blame on the pitch. “The wicket was really dead, we gave ourselves nearly 120 overs, but nothinghappened,” Jaffer said. “Everybody tried their best, it wasn’t due to lack of effort or anything, you couldn’t do more than that, the wicket wasn’t helping the spinners or the fast bowlers, the odd ball was keeping low but that was not good enough.”The first-innings lead was enough, though, to give Mumbai a five-point cushion over fourth-placed Railways; their chance of making the quarter-finals remains healthy.

Wolves must avoid Ait-Nouri disaster

So far this season, in Bruno Lage’s first campaign in charge of Wolves, the Old Gold have picked up an incredibly mixed bag of results with seven wins, seven defeats and four draws.

One figure that has played a big part for Lage in the team, particularly since mid-October is 20-year-old full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, who has made nine appearances in the Premier League this season for the Midlands club and has previously been labelled as “phenomenal” by Wolves journalist Tim Spiers.

Despite only signing the Frenchman on a permanent basis back in July after spending the previous season on loan from SCO Angers, Wolves could be heading for a potential disaster with a number of clubs across Europe such as Paris Saint Germain and Barcelona interested in Ait-Nouri as well as fellow Premier League clubs Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham reportedly monitoring his progress at Molineux.

With WhoScored listing the Frenchman as Wolves’ highest-rated player based on his performances in the Premier League this season, this shows not only why these clubs reportedly have their eyes on him but also why it would be a big blow for Wolves and Lage if they let him leave.

Having racked up an average of 3.9 tackles per game, more than any other Wolves player in the league this season, as well as 1.1 clearances per game and one interception per game, it’s safe to say that he has been a big part of why Lage’s side have only conceded 14 goals so far in the campaign, leaving only Manchester City (9) and Chelsea (12) having conceded fewer.

Looking ahead to the future, with Ait-Nouri’s current contract at Wolves not set to expire until the summer of 2026, this could work in Wolves’ favour with the defender not expected to be going anywhere anytime soon. At least if a club does come in to sign him, it would take a substantial transfer fee to take the £33k-per-week earner away from Molineux.

Moving forward, if Wolves can secure a European place in the Premier League table by the end of the season, this would be a good step in getting Ait-Nouri to stay at the club and convince him to see out his contract there.
