Darnell Furlong has impressed for West Brom

Despite a rather mixed bag of results in the Championship so far this season, West Brom are currently third in the table below league leaders Bournemouth and Fulham in second.

One player who has certainly played a significant part in the Baggies’ current campaign and has arguably been their unsung hero is Darnell Furlong.

Having played in all but one of West Brom’s league games so far this season, featuring as a right-back and in right midfield, he has shown how reliable he has been for Baggies boss Valerien Ismael.

The 26-year-old, who is currently valued at £4.5m according to Transfermarkt, has also provided three assists in the league this season, the first of which came in their 4-0 win over Sheffield United, with the other two coming in their 3-0 win over Bristol City.

Furlong has also averaged 1.4 shots at goal and 1.6 key passes per game in the league, highlighting his attacking prowess for the Baggies, which isn’t really a surprise given how the player was praised for his “dangerous” crosses by Glenn Murray last season.

From a defensive point of view, Furlong has also proven himself a solid unit for the Midlands club, averaging 1.4 tackles, 1.8 clearances and 1.1 interceptions per game and winning 61% of his duels, according to SofaScore.

Also, his average of getting dribbled past stands at 0.8 per game, which is lower than fellow Baggies defender Dara O’Shea (1.2), even though Furlong has played more games than the Irishman this season.

Taking all this into account, it’s easy to see why Ismael has started Furlong so regularly this season given how well-rounded a player he has been for the team and cementing himself as a real unsung hero.

Moving forward, if Furlong can continue playing regularly for the Baggies and keep being a useful attacking and defensive outlet for the team, he could well inspire them to a promotion place by the end of the campaign.

Watson ready to step into Hughes' shoes

However, the allrounder expects it will be the added value of his bowling that will earn him a Test return

Shane Watson will also bring a bowling option to the team, apart from batting in the top order, but he believes up to 15 overs will be his ideal workload initially•AFP

Shane Watson is ready to become a makeshift opener if Phillip Hughes’ woes continue, but the allrounder expects it will be the added value of his bowling that earns him a Test return. Watson, who has recovered from a thigh injury, is officially in the squad as a specialist batsman and has the backing of the coach Tim Nielsen to fill any spot in the order. While Hughes has struggled, particularly against Andrew Flintoff, in posting 57 runs in the opening two Tests, it would be just as big a risk to replace him because there are no other genuine openers in the squad. One of the major criticisms of the selectors is they don’t have cover for Hughes or Simon Katich, but they believe Watson is capable of doing the job. He does as well.”Definitely,” Watson said. “I’ve been working on my batting, especially the past couple of months, tightening up my technique a little more. I’ve always said I believe I have the game – and the mental game – to bat anywhere in the top order. I’ve been batting from three to four for Queensland for the last three or four years and opening the batting in one-day cricket.”Watson did have a stint at the top in the Sheffield Shield a couple of summers ago when he hoped to break into the Test team after Justin Langer’s retirement, but the experiment ended before Christmas. “That was nice and successful,” he said while smiling. Have things changed since then? “Yes.”The Australians, who are down 1-0, head to Northampton on Wednesday to prepare for Friday’s tour match, Watson’s first game of the tour. After spending two weeks on his fitness following the injury picked up during last month’s World Twenty20, he hopes to deliver between 12 and 15 overs a day to prove he is capable of adding to his eight Tests. He also dreams of the days when his body frees him of the restrictions.”[Up to 15 overs is] the ideal workload for me until I can get through some games consistently and then my ultimate goal is to have a free rein on what I bowl, but at the moment that’s a little while away,” he said. “That’s the thing that I’m aiming for and hopefully I can get some continuous cricket into my body.”Watson believes he can create greater balance in the side, offering contributions with both disciplines. However, unless Australia drop someone in the top six – Marcus North scored a century in Cardiff and Michael Hussey’s form is improving – it is unlikely he will squeeze into the XI unless Hughes continues to underwhelm.”I bring a bowling option to the team, as well as batting in the top order,” he said. “It’s always helpful for the captain to have another option.”Watson has not played since the Twenty20 loss to Sri Lanka in Nottingham last month and has gradually increased his bowling load. He has been joined in rehabilitation by Brett Lee, who has been fighting a stomach injury since before the series started and is battling to be fit for next week’s third Test. Watson knows better than anyone about injuries and said it would be a miracle if Lee was able to play in the tour game.”It normally takes at least a week of building up your bowling to be physically fit to play in a game,” he said. “I’d say it’d be a long shot for him to be fit, but miracles can happen.”The other major fear for Australia is the form of Mitchell Johnson, who was so erratic at Lord’s that his place has come under question. Johnson has spent a lot of time with Watson at Queensland, where they played before moving interstate, and is trying to find the form that made him a world-beater in South Africa four months ago.”Mitch is travelling okay,” Watson said. “He knows he’s not exactly at his best, but it wasn’t too long ago that he was at his absolute best in South Africa. At his best, he’s one of the best bowlers in the world.”Johnson’s lack of form adds to the side’s troubles and even the fringe members of the squad are feeling the stress. “There’s pressure on everyone,” Watson said. “We’ve got to be at our best – no excuses – and we have to stand up as a group. Each individual has to do everything we can to leave these shores with the Ashes in our hand.”Watson was in England four years ago when Australia lost that series, but he was playing for Hampshire instead of fighting for a Test place. He didn’t expect the explosion of interest in the contest since the host’s victory at Lord’s, but won’t blame that for his team’s under-performance at the home of cricket. They have a week to work out how to keep their opponents quiet, something they failed to do in 2005. “It can be very difficult at times when England have their tail up,” he said. “They are extremely good frontrunners: the team, the public and the media. But we can’t let other influences affect our preparation or psyche. That’s something we’ve got to be very conscious of.”

Townsend has been WBA’s key figure this season

While West Brom may not have had a perfect start to their Championship campaign with 17 games played, the Baggies are still very much in the mix to secure a promotion place by the end of the season, currently sat in third place in the league table with 32 points from nine wins, five draws and three defeats under their belt.

One player that has played a big part in West Brom’s season so far is defender Conor Townsend, who has started all 17 of their league games and ultimately played more minutes than any other Baggies player, showing just how important he is for Valerien Ismael.

In addition to this, the 28-year-old has also highlighted his versatility on the pitch by playing as a centre-back, left-back and left-midfielder at times this season, which is a big sign as to why Ismael has picked him to start so many times.

Regarding his performances, from a defensive point of view, Townsend has racked up an average of 2.8 aerials won (47 in total), 1.8 tackles, 1.5 clearances and 1.4 interceptions per game in the Championship, proving himself as a vital part of West Brom’s back line.

As well as his defensive contributions, Townsend has also proven himself to be a useful attacking outlet for the team, contributing an average of 1.5 key passes per match, with the Englishman securing two assists for the team which came during their 2-2 draw against AFC Bournemouth on the opening day of the season followed by their 1-1 draw against Millwall back in September.

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to say that Townsend, who has been described as a “confident” player on the ball by Baggies journalist Steve Madeley, has been a real hero for Ismael this season given his versatility, reliability and all-round ability up and down the pitch.

Moving forward, with Dara O’Shea still out injured for the next few months and the fact that Kean Bryan has now been ruled out for the remainder of the season through injury, Ismael will undoubtedly be hoping that Townsend will be able to keep fit for the rest of the campaign.

He’ll need to keep delivering the sort of performances that he has been doing, as he could give the Baggies a great chance of securing a place back in the Premier League.

Jonathan Trott has been handed another opportunity to impress the England selectors ahead of the fifth Ashes Test a week on Thursday, after he was named in the England Lions XI to take on the Australians in the two-day warm-up match at Canterbury on Saturday.Trott, who was included in England’s fourth Test squad but missed out on the final XI, is joined by a number of fringe players looking to stake their claim ahead of the winter tours to South Africa and Bangladesh. Stephen Moore, the Worcestershire batsman who cracked 120 against the Australians in England Lions’ match at New Road, was also named. In addition, there are two young and aspiring fast bowlers – Chris Woakes, the Warwickshire seamer, and James Harris from Glamorgan.

Celtic: Hoops targeting two new midfielders

Celtic have begun work on bringing in two new midfielders during the January transfer window, according to The Scottish Daily Mail, via 67 Hail Hail.

The Lowdown: Midfielder links…

The Hoops are reportedly confident of bringing in versatile Japanese forward Daizen Maeda in the New Year, and it seems as if he may not be the only winter window arrival at Lennoxtown.

Celtic have been linked with Japanese midfielder Reo Hatate in recent weeks, whereas rumours regarding a move for Shamrock Rovers’ Danny Mandroiu emerged earlier in the week.

Talks over a move for Hatate are underway with his club Kawasaki Frontale, whereas Celtic appear to fancy their chances of signing Mandroiu, a player they have been keeping an eye on since the summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-16/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: The Scottish Daily Mail’s update

The Scottish Daily Mail state [print edition 19/11/21, p.86], relayed by 67 Hail Hail, claim that the Hoops are working on two new midfield additions.

However, the print report does not share any names specifically, but it seems as if Celtic have their sights on multiple signings.

The Verdict: Nicholson not hanging about

It appears as if interim CEO Michael Nicholson isn’t hanging about when it comes to working on January moves. Even though the recent report doesn’t name-check targets, it could be the case that Hatate and Mandroiu are the players in question.

Callum McGregor, David Turnbull and Tom Rogic have been Ange Postecoglou’s go-to options in the middle of the park, with summer signings Liam Shaw and James McCarthy failing to make the impact they may have hoped for this season.

Meanwhile, the likes of Ismaila Soro and Nir Bitton don’t seem to be fancied by Postecoglou from the off, so bringing in two midfield options in Hatate and Mandroiu, who are both versatile, could prove a wise decision as Nicholson and Postecoglou aim to build a squad capable of challenging for Scottish Premiership glory.

Chanderpaul keeps Durham on top

Shivnarine Chanderpaul stood firm with an unbeaten century, as Durham were made to battle to keep the ascendancy on a tough day’s cricket at Chester-le-Street. Having taken control of the match by bowling Somerset out for 174 on the first day, Durham were indebted to Chanderpaul who overcame a collapse of 3 for 5 in five overs to convert his overnight 49 into a vital 117. Charl Willoughby was the pick of the Somerset attack with 5 for 56, but Ben Phillips was equally impressive with 3 for 46, including his former team-mate, Ian Blackwell, for a second-ball duck. Trailing by 98 on first innings, Somerset had hauled themselves right back into the contest by the close, as Marcus Trescothick and Arul Suppiah added 41 unbroken runs for the first wicket.Warwickshire moved along to 179 for 1 against Worcestershire at Edgbaston.
