Celtic: Rogic costing Postecoglou dearly

Celtic’s worst start to a season for 23 years continued on Sunday afternoon as the Hoops dropped yet more points in their quest to regain the league title.

The Bhoys have shown some promising signs under Ange Postecoglou but ultimately, his team are struggling to adapt to a number of injury problems.

The absence of top scorer Kyogo Furuhashi has clearly hampered their progress, as too has a fitness problem for skipper Callum McGregor.

However, you can’t keep making excuses for poor performances; they did score three goals away at Real Betis with a range of injuries.

Since that match, though, Postecoglou’s side have only scored once in two outings.

They lost to Livingston and then their 1-1 draw with Dundee United at Parkhead was hardly any better.

Albian Ajeti was isolated in attack and despite the best efforts of Liel Abada and Jota, two players who brought flair to the encounter, they couldn’t get over the line.

One player who was disappointing for a third successive outing was James McCarthy. The Irishman was poor in the middle of the park and was substituted at half time having won just 33.3% of his defensive duels.

However, it’s hard to ignore the performance of Tom Rogic either.

The Australian started well under the stewardship of Postecoglou by scoring in the 6-0 rout of Dundee but against the club’s rivals, Dundee United, he was extremely poor.

It caps a run of poor form for the attacking midfielder who hasn’t been at the races over the last few weeks.

As they laboured to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon, the 28-year-old gave away the ball on a relentless basis, surrendering possession on 20 occasions.

That led to a mediocre pass success rate of 71% as Rogic struggled to link defence to attack.

What made the Australia international’s afternoon even worse was the fact he missed a glorious opportunity to score.

He latched onto Jota’s knockdown but rattled the frame of the goal. That was just one of three times that Celtic hit either the post or bar.

Ultimately, Rogic’s creativity and end product deserted him at Parkhead this weekend. Sadly, that has been a regular occurrence for the Celtic man in recent weeks. He needs to improve.

ICC, BCCI and ICL talks fail

The ICC, ICL and BCCI failed to reach a resolution after a three-hour meeting in Johannesburg today on the unauthorised league’s request for official recognition. No further discussions are scheduled and the ICL’s application will be now be considered once again by the ICC executive board in April.David Morgan, the ICC president, described the failure of the discussions as unfortunate but said that the meeting was held in a friendly manner. “I am grateful to all parties for coming together with the best of intentions and the discussions took place in a friendly and cordial manner but, unfortunately, we were not able to come to a successful conclusion in our discussions,” said Morgan. The ICC board had previously discussed the ICL issue and mandated the BCCI to resolve it internally. However, talks between the BCCI and ICL failed last year, prompting the ICC to push for a resolution in the “best interests of the game”.While the ICC has made it clear that the matter has to be sorted out by the home board – the BCCI, in this case – Indian officials have stuck to their hardline stance on the unofficial league and banned all ICL cricketers from all forms of official cricket. The ICL has maintained that it would take the legal route if its application, under an ICC rule that allows ‘authorised unofficial cricket’, is rejected by the governing body. The ICL’s hopes for a legal resolution received a boost recently with the Sindh High Court in Pakistan ruling that Pakistani cricketers associated with ICL be allowed to play domestic cricket in that country.Over 150 cricketers from India, England, West Indies, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Bangladesh have been signed up by ICL, which is now in its second year. However, the private league decided to cancel its World Series Twenty20 event for March due to the deepening economic recession and non-availability of Pakistan players following rising cross-border tensions.Apart from Morgan, today’s meeting was attended by Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, Subhash Chandra, the ICL owner, and Himanshu Mody, the private league’s business head.

Quase aliviado!

Dorival Júnior mudou o jogo no intervalo.

Expectation had nothing to do with loss – Smith

The headwear gave them away. Ricky Ponting and Phillip Hughes sat together after Australia’s win in Durban and the most obvious sign of the generational gap that divides them was the state of their baggy green caps

Graeme Smith’s courageous decision to bat with a broken hand in theSydney Test was indicative of the spark and the willpower that his mendisplayed throughout the tour of Australia. He was in charge of a sidethat had risen to so many challenges, come back from so many seeminglyirreparable positions that nobody was prepared to write them off. When South Africa’s lower order gradually faded away on the fifthafternoon in Durban, Smith, with a broken hand yet again, remained inhis green shirt and shorts, watching on with a depressed look. Hewasn’t padding up. There were to be no heroics and nobody could blamehim. Few players would have done what he did at the SCG.But the fact that he didn’t even appear to consider batting said muchabout South Africa’s state of mind on this return tour. It was a squadthat lacked intensity and seemed to have left all its energy inAustralia. Following the Kingsmead defeat, Smith was at a loss toexplain exactly what had changed besides a diminishment in the potencyof the attack.”We’ve been outplayed in every facet of the game and I think Australiacreated pressure and have been a lot sharper and more intense,” Smithsaid. “In particular they’ve bowled really well as a unit. They’vebeen able to create that sustained pressure on our batters and that’ssomething that we haven’t really done well.”We’ve started indifferently with the ball often, which has made itvery difficult for us to come back in the games. We’ve fought hardat the back ends of both Test matches but we just haven’t done enoughup front to get ourselves into the game early on. In the two first inningsin both Test matches I think we’ve let ourselves down, we’ve just leftourselves too much to do.”Smith’s men left Australia on the back of a loss but with their firstwin in a Test series in Australia. They were also tantalisingly closeto the world No. 1 Test ranking. Any sort of victory in the series inSouth Africa would have got them there. It meant a massive build-upbut Smith said the pressure on his side from the public was not anissue.”I don’t think expectation had anything to do with it,” Smith said.”It’s been a stellar season for this team in terms of what they’veachieved over the last period of time and with the results throughEngland and playing so well in India and defeating Australia away. Ithink we never quite achieved those heights in this series. It’s assimple as that.”South Africa’s series defeat was their first in two-and-a-half years. They entered the Johannesburg and Durban Tests with the same startingXI that played all three games in Australia. That will change for CapeTown, where Smith will not play due to his injury and Neil McKenzieand Morne Morkel have been dropped. Smith said it was a shame that thegroup had been split up after the end of their successful run of 10series without a loss.”It’s naturally disappointing, this group has been together for aperiod of time now and had enormous success,” Smith said.”Unfortunately the way of life or the way of sport that if theselectors feel you haven’t played well enough then it’s a naturalprogression that things are going to change. It’s our job now to getbehind the new guys and give them as much support and make them feelwelcome and ready to play at Newlands.”

Paul Pogba edges towards Man Utd stay

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba appears to be edging closer towards signing a new contract with the club following months of negotiations.

What’s the story?

The World Cup winner’s current deal expires in the summer of 2022, meaning he would be free to negotiate with foreign clubs as early as January.

French giants Paris Saint-Germain were heavily linked with the 28-year-old in the previous window before their shock move for Lionel Messi meant Pogba’s arrival was no longer a financial possibility.

It’s believed that the Ligue 1 outfit, Juventus and Real Madrid are still interested in the creative talents signature, but according to L’Équipe (as relayed by Get French Football News), he is now set to put pen to paper on fresh terms with United.

The report states that: “L’Équipe report today that France midfielder Paul Pogba is now telling those around him that he sees himself extending his contract with Manchester United.

“His entourage is said to have a clear goal in mind, which is to make the former Juventus man the highest, or at least one of the highest-paid players in Premier League history.”

Fans will be absolutely delighted

News that Pogba reportedly sees his long-term future at Old Trafford will leave United supporters feeling absolutely delighted, given his importance to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s charges.

It’s been a frustrating five years for the France international since he returned to his boyhood club in a then world-record £89m deal back in 2016, with only a League Cup and Europa League to show for his efforts.

However, since last December, Pogba has begun to show the sort of form on a consistent basis that convinced United to spend such a hefty fee on the engine room operator.

Since the beginning of 2020/21, the 6 foot 2 dynamo has bagged six goals and an impressive 18 assists in his 51 appearances for the 20-time English champions, illustrating his truly world-class form of late.

If Pogba does eventually agree to fresh terms at the club, then it will be a huge boost to Solskjaer’s ambitions as he attempts to return United to the Premier League summit, and fans will be hoping he puts pen to paper sooner rather than later.

Bell shines on gloomy day

Ian Bell has already stated how much he wants to win back his England place, but it was his bat that spoke most eloquently on the opening day of the Championship season

Ian Bell has already stated how much he wants his England place, but it was his bat that spoke most eloquently on the opening day of the Championship season as his fine, unbeaten 84 dominated the shortened first day’s play of Warwickshire’s match against Somerset at Taunton. While most of the players still looked rusty after the winter’s break, Bell was in prime form from the start. He came in after a brief opening stand of 13 when Tony Frost departed for 7, caught at the wicket while trying to withdraw his bat. Bell’s first ball, from Ben Phillips, lifted sharply, but he handled it well and then drove the next confidently past mid-on for two. While his partner Darren Maddy battled for 55 minutes to score his first five runs, Bell was keeping the score constantly on moving, playing most of his strokes with time to spare. Only the left-armer Charl Willoughby, who enjoyed no luck, made him play and miss once or twice. Some of the bowling was not particularly testing, Mark Turner in particular had two very erratic spells, and even Phillips, who took all three wickets to fall before lunch fell away afterwards. But before the interval Bell was master of all he surveyed, especially with the cover drive. Both Phillips and Peter Trego were dispatched to the boundary twice in the same over with effortless strokes. He also pulled their short deliveries impressively, and reached his 50 just before the break off 84 balls.By then he had also lost Maddy, whose dogged innings of 17 came to an abrupt end as a superb delivery from Phillips splayed his stumps, and then Jonathan Trott walked in front of the next ball to depart lbw without offering a shot. Jim Troughton saw off the hat-trick delivery and was to survive the day with 58 to his name, out of an unbroken partnership of 123.Lunch did not seeme to agree with Bell, who lost his fluency in the fifty-odd minutes possible by the rain in the afternoon session, adding just eight to his score in the short session. By way of contrast, Troughton’s touch improved leaps and bounds and when play resumed temporarily after tea he was quick out of the blocks and moved to his half-century off 102 balls.Bell never quite regained his pre-lunch form, but he didn’t throw his wicket away and finished the day within sight of a century. He did play an uppish shot for four that just evaded backward point when on 76, but otherwise the home side never really looked likely to remove him. There was a slightly bizarre ending to the day’s play, as Omari Banks was unleashed to bowl for the first time and the umpires apparently decided after a single ball that the batsmen might be in physical danger if they had to face an off-spinner in gloomy light. The day was Bell’s, although Phillips, who admits to being inconsistent, will doubtless be pleased with his performance during the morning. The weather was fairly typical for this time of year: overcast with a slight mist and the light often not very good. But there were several hundred spectators for Taunton’s first day of the new season, and they were probably quite entertained by the cricket on offer.

Wolves suffer Trincao injury blow

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been dealt a major blow regarding the fitness of Francisco Trincao ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by the Shropshire Star, the Barcelona loanee looks extremely unlikely to feature in Wolves trip to Aston Villa this Saturday, as the winger has fallen ill and, as a result, is currently completing an isolation period away from the squad.

The report continued to reveal that the 21-year-old – who was a late addition to the Portugal squad, replacing the injured Rafa Silva – returned a positive test for the global pandemic upon his arrival for international duty with Fernando Santos’ side, with his isolation period in Portugal due to end on Sunday – the day after Wolves’ clash with Villa.

Fans will be gutted

Considering just how impressive Trincao has been since joining Wolves on a temporary basis this summer, the news that the forward looks set to be unavailable for the trip to Villa Park this weekend is sure to have left fans gutted.

Indeed, while the £19.8m-rated man is yet to get himself on the scoresheet, or provide his teammates with an assist, in any of his six Premier League appearances for Bruno Lage’s side, the winger has nevertheless wowed at Molineux, taking an average of 2.5 shots, making one key pass and completing 3.2 dribbles per game.

These returns have seen the player John Ruddy dubbed an “assured” talent earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.90, ranking him as Wolves’ joint eighth-best performer in the top flight this term.

As such, with both Lage and fans of the club undoubtedly hoping for a win against their West Midlands rivals on Saturday, the absence of the £140k-per-week Trincao is sure to come as a blow to all involved with Wolves.
