It has not been a particularly encouraging day for cricket’s minnows. First Bangladesh were routed by an innings-and-129 runs in Bloemfontein while, in Harare, Zimbabwe capitulated to their fourth-lowest ODI score of 67 against a clinical Sri Lanka who, with depressing inevitability, are heading for a 5-0 series win.It was Zimbabwe’s second collapse in three days. They lost their last seven wickets for three runs in the first ODI, and showed no sign of improving today as Ajantha Mendis took 4 for 15, taking his series-tally to seven.Farveez Maharoof’s three early wickets helped reduce Zimbabwe to 34 for 4, a position from which they were ill-equipped to recover, particularly with Muttiah Muralitharan and Mendis yet to bowl. Tatenda Taibu, playing in his 100th ODI, dropped anchor in an attempt to stabilise a listing ship, but he became Mendis’s first victim when he misread a straighter delivery which shot through his defence. That he top-scored with 12 tells the sorriest of tales.Elton Chigumbura lasted 27 balls before he too was beaten by Mendis’s clever arm-ball. At 48 for 6, Zimbabwe were sliding fast, and Thilan Thushara grabbed two wickets to ensure there were no tail-end frolics. Mendis wrapped things up with his fourth wicket, that of Sean Williams, the returning allrounder, as Zimbabwe crashed to their fourth-lowest total in one-dayers.Sri Lanka took their time chasing 68, and Zimbabwe’s bowlers did their best to gloss an otherwise dismal performance. After eight overs they had Sri Lanka 20 for 1 – Mahela Udawatte drove loosely at a fine outswinger from the economical Tawanda Mupariwa – but, that small blemish aside, Sri Lanka cruised home. Kumar Sangakkara carved five crunching fours in his unbeaten 28 – three in one over off Chigumbura – and was well supported by Upal Tharanga’s 29.To compound Zimbabwe’s depression, an ICC fact-finding delegation are currently in Harare to assess their suitability for returning to Test cricket. On the evidence of the first two matches, they are barely fit to play ODIs.

Ronaldo available for Newcastle clash

Manchester United will be able to call upon the services of new signing Cristiano Ronaldo when they take on Newcastle United next weekend.

The Red Devils will be hoping to maintain their unbeaten start to the new campaign when Steve Bruce’s charges visit Old Trafford next Saturday, and Ronaldo’s availability should certainly aid them in their mission to do just that.

What’s the word?

After picking up a yellow card for removing his shirt while celebrating his record-breaking winner in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over the Republic of Ireland in midweek, the 36-year-old is suspended for his nation’s encounter with Azerbaijan on Tuesday.

As a result, Portugal head coach Fernando Santos released the player on Thursday in order to help him accelerate his move to United, freeing him up to return to England earlier than initially expected.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side applied for an “elite sport exemption” on Ronaldo’s behalf but the government rejected it, according to The Times, so he will have to isolate for five days and return a negative virus test before being allowed out of quarantine.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was greeted by former team-mate turned technical director Darren Fletcher at Manchester Airport on Friday, allowing him plenty of time to train with his new team-mates before their next fixture.

Solskjaer will be absolutely delighted

News that Ronaldo should be available to face Newcastle for his second Old Trafford debut will leave Solskjaer feeling absolutely delighted.

Despite United picking up seven points from a possible nine in the opening weeks of the new Premier League season, the addition of a legendary striker who has scored 674 clubs goals in 895 appearances will always be welcomed.

Solskjaer’s biggest decision may be who partners Ronaldo in attack. Mason Greenwood has done a fabulous job leading the line so far, scoring three goals in as many top-flight games, so he’s likely to keep his place in the starting XI.

That could see Jadon Sancho sacrificed after his underwhelming performance against Wolves last time out, although he’ll be hoping to bounce back with a positive display next time out.

Wickets galore at the Kotla

The trip to the Feroz Shah Kotla would have been worth it for every bowler who has toiled for years on the Indian domestic cricket. The pampered batsmen were left out on the street and they couldn’t fend for themselves. On a lovely wintry day in Delhi, a wicket fell less than every three overs on average on a pitch that assisted swing and seam movement. Six batsmen succumbed to away movement and edged to the wicketkeeper, 12 were bowled by straighter ones and incoming deliveries, the top score of the day was only 32, and six Delhi batsmen walked out for the second time on the same day.It was easy to forget the state of the match amid the flurry of wickets. The defending champions, Delhi, were dismissed for 78 in the first session. Orissa’s medium-pace success stories, the Mohantys – Debasis and Basanth – took three wickets each, and were supported by three from Sukanta Khatua. Orissa then withered against the fury of Ishant Sharma, who took seven wickets in 8.3 overs to restrict the lead to two runs. By stumps, Delhi had stumbled to a lead of 36, losing a wicket each to the Mohantys and two to Khatua.Delhi were desperate for an outright victory to bring their title defence back on track but, by preparing a green top, they had taken a gamble against bowlers who relish these conditions. After they lost the toss, the strategy threatened to back fire in a manner similar to Australia’s victory in Kolkata on a pitch tailored for India’s spinners.Debasis struck in the first over, trapping Gambhir lbw with an outswinger, and before Delhi had recovered, Aakash Chopra attempted an uncharacteristic booming drive off Basanth and played on to his stumps. A moment of inspirational fielding helped dismiss Delhi’s big three within the first hour of the match. Virender Sehwag called for a second run, after a fumble at sweeper-cover, but was yards short when Dhiraj Singh hit the only stump visible to him.Delhi’s predicament – 39 for 3 – got worse after Basanth struck twice in two overs. Virat Kohli tickled one down the leg side while Mithun Manhas got a nasty delivery which kicked and moved away from a length.Three overs later Khatua also struck twice to remove Rajat Bhatia and Puneet Bisht, the last batsmen capable of resistance. The tail didn’t last long, Sumit Narhwal and Parvinder Awana holed out to mid-off and mid-on, and Orissa were batting shortly before lunch.Ishant Sharma gave them a reality check before the interval with an outstanding delivery. He bowled an offcutter that sent Shiv Sunder Das’ off stump cartwheeling. In his first over after lunch, Ishant bowled a straighter one that took Niranjan Behera’s edge. In his recent book, Ricky Ponting talked of Ishant’s deadly offcutter, which made his straighter one seem like a legcutter. That illusion was evident and his pace had the Orissa batsmen playing even the full-length deliveries off the back foot.Bikas Pati, Orissa’s opening batsman, took advantage of some ineffective bowling from Pradeep Sangwan, hitting three boundaries in an over, but Ishant struck once again at the other end, bowling Subit Biswal through the bat-pad gap. The bail flew to short third man, just missing Aakash Chopra at slip. Pati continued to score freely but was the first wicket in Ishant’s next double-strike. Pinninti Jayachandra, who was bowled shouldering arms, was Ishant’s fifth wicket but visions of a perfect ten faded when Sehwag gave him a break after eight overs.Halhadar Das and Pravanjan Mullick found Delhi’s back-up fast bowlers easier to face and took the total from 61 to 80 for 5, two runs past the hosts’ total. However, that was as far as Orissa got for they lost their last five wickets for no runs. Parvinder Awana bowled a lovely line outside off and kept getting away movement which brought him Halhadar’s wicket two overs before tea. After tea, the bowlers competed to send the stumps cartwheeling and Ishant won, knocking over the wickets twice, compared to Awana’s one. None of Orissa’s batsmen would have faced pace like Ishant’s and it showed in their effort. Ishant will be on a hat-trick when Orissa start their second innings. There was more shock to follow though. After facing only one delivery, Gambhir walked down the pitch to Debasis, got too far across, and lost his leg stump to complete a pair. Basanth got into the act soon, forcing a leading edge from Chopra, who closed the face of the bat too early. Towards the end of the day, Kohli shouldered arms to Khatua and was bowled and in the same over, Manhas played across to a straight delivery, leaving Delhi on 36 for 4. Their only hope was the presence of Sehwag, who hit four fours and a six in his 27. The way the two teams have batted so far, the Sehwag way seemed the only way to bat.

Grant has a shocker as West Brom slip up

Considering how impressive West Bromwich Albion had looked under the new leadership of Valerien Ismael so far this season, with the Baggies having picked up 13 points over their opening five fixtures of the 2021/22 Championship campaign, the Frenchman must have been expecting more of the same from his Albion side on Saturday.

Indeed, with the visitors to The Hawthorns, Millwall, having won one, drawn two and lost two of their first five league games, few football fans, West Brom or otherwise, would have predicted anything but a comprehensive Albion win in the fixture.

However, despite their underdog status, Gary Rowett’s side turned in a highly impressive display against the Baggies, bettering Ismael’s side in terms of total shots, shots on target and big chances created, as well as enjoying 44% of possession – a rather extraordinary feat away from home at one of the second tier’s big hitters.

As such, the Lions were well worth the 1-1 draw they left West Bromwich with, and perhaps were unfortunate they did not seal all three points in the clash.

On the flip side, perhaps unsurprisingly, a number of the West Brom players had games to forget, with Semi Ajayi, Cedric Kipre and Sam Johnstone all turning in below-par performances, however, it will undoubtedly be Karlan Grant most disappointed with his display on Saturday.

Fewer touches than Johnstone

Indeed, prior to his substitution in the 59th minute of the fixture, the £7.2m-rated man proved particularly ineffective on the left-hand side of Ismael’s attack, with his only shot – either on or off-target – in the game coming late in the first half, when Bartosz Bialkowski comfortably saved his penalty.

Aside from his spot-kick miss, the 23-year-old also won just two of his five duels, lost possession of the ball on nine separate occasions, failed with his one attempted cross and completed just 11 passes.

The £30k-per-week forward also touched the ball a grand total of 25 times, 20 times fewer than the West Brom shot-stopper Sam Johnstone.

These returns saw Grant earn an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.2, with no player from either side who featured in the game receiving a lower score than the former England U18 international.

As such, should Albion have any hope of getting back to winning ways against Derby County on Tuesday evening, Grant will undoubtedly have to up his game from the Millwall clash, as the striker was simply not good enough on Saturday.

Estou à disposição para ajudar a equipe, seja onde o professor Rogério Ceni me colocar. Espero ajudar a ganhar títulos.

Agradou no Morumbi

Reformulação do elenco

Aston Villa: Talks underway with Cameron Archer

Aston Villa have opened talks with forward Cameron Archer over a new deal, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Preece’s claim

Archer burst onto the first-team scene this season with a hat-trick on his first start in a 6-0 win over Barrow in the EFL Cup.

Reliable reporter Ashley Preece claimed that the 19-year-old is under contract until 2022 and expected Villa to assess his future in January.

However, it seems as if Johan Lange and the Villa hierarchy are taking action before then when it comes to the teenager who Dean Smith described as ‘really good’ in pre-season.

The Latest: Source shares update

According to Football Insider, who were informed by a Villa source, talks are underway between Lange and co with Archer over a new contract.

Villa hold Archer in high regard and are now working on agreeing on terms with the striker over a new deal.

The report even adds that Villa turned down offers for Archer in the summer window.

The Verdict: Good move

Villa appear to be building for the future with a number of Under-23 additions over the summer, but keeping hold of exciting talents who are already at Bodymoor Heath is just as important.

Archer has impressed in recent months and took his opportunity in the Carabao Cup, so hopefully, he’ll pen improved terms before the New Year and will be able to train alongside the likes of Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings.

Villa could then reap the rewards regarding Archer in years to come, but if they fail to keep him in the Midlands, it could come back to haunt them in the long run.

In other news: ‘We’re done’, ‘Was coming’ – Villa source update has lots of fans talking.

Top ICC officials hold talks with ICL

David Morgan, Sharad Pawar and Haroon Lorgat met Subhash Chandra, the owner of the unauthorised league, in a New Delhi hotel on Monday

In what could be a significant step towards the resolution of the ICL situation, the ICC’s three top officials – David Morgan, the president, Sharad Pawar, the vice-president and Haroon Lorgat, the chief executive – met Subhash Chandra, the owner of the unauthorised league, in a New Delhi hotel on Monday. The official cricket establishment has been working for a while on resolving the problem, which affects more than a hundred banned players; one solution, it was learnt, involves accommodating the league within an exhibition framework. At the same time, in a delicate balancing act, the ICC has distributed for feedback a set of draft regulations on official and unofficial cricket to various stakeholders that contains tougher norms to prevent another ICL-like situation in the future. The ICC is clear that the ICL situation is a domestic issue for the Indian board to deal with directly; it is also keen on a “logical and common sense approach” to protect those cricketers already associated with the ICL and banned from all forms of official cricket. Against this background, the presence of Pawar, the previous BCCI president, at Monday’s meeting – first reported by the Hindustan Times newspaper – is an indication that a resolution is possible. In fact, Pawar’s presence within the ICC – the Indian minister became its vice-president this year and still has the final say over Indian cricket affairs – has provided the world body with the perfect platform for a resolution after being inundated with requests from the ICL, its cricketers, and other respected voices in international cricket to lift the ban. Incidentally, Chandra, the industrialist who heads the Zee media group, is known to have been close to Pawar, a veteran politician. The BCCI had initially adopted a hard-line approach against the ICL, barring Indian cricketers associated with the league from accessing even their local college grounds. It also used its significant influence within the ICC to ensure other national boards imposed similar bans on ICL cricketers and officials. Subsequently, two senior BCCI officials – Shashank Manohar, the president, and Lalit Modi, a vice-president and the man behind the IPL – were invited by the ICC to be part of a five-member working group to discuss new rules for official and unofficial cricket. During these discussions, the BCCI officially held talks with ICL – talks that were ended abruptly without any headway reported. Now, with the working group preparing a new set of draft regulations to prevent future unofficial leagues, it appears that Indian officials and the ICC are working to accommodate the ICL in some form and bring the curtains down on a controversy that split the cricketing world over the last year. The ICC is now expected to discuss the draft regulations and the ICL issue at its board meeting in Perth on January 31. Incidentally, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have already softened their stance on ICL and Sri Lanka cleared six ICL cricketers to play in a domestic tournament. However, there are still some knots to be untangled before a resolution is reached on both the ICL and the new draft regulations. For instance, the Federation of International Cricketers (FICA) has raised queries regarding player welfare under the new draft regulations. Tim May, the FICA chief executive, told Cricinfo the organisation had received the draft regulations and discussed them during its recent meeting in Kuala Lumpur. “We do have some queries, though I would not describe them as major,” May said. “They are basically a few clarifications we have sought.”The ICL was launched in 2007 as a private venture and officials associated with the Twenty20 league have subsequently applied for recognition from the ICC under rules that allow the world body to sanction exhibition/testimonial matches. But the request is pending with the ICC, which has pointed out it does not have the home board’s endorsement.
