Danny Ings has rejected a new contract at Southampton, which leaves Ralph Hasenhuttl with a tough decision to make regarding the striker’s future at St Mary’s.

Ings rejects four-year deal

According to The Athletic, the 28-year-old striker has rejected a four-year contract offer from the South Coast club, one which would have comfortably made him the highest-paid player at St Mary’s, as he has expressed his desire to play at a higher level.

The England international made it clear earlier in the year that he wanted to play for a side competing in Europe, so after Southampton’s collapse in the second half of last season’s Premier League, it was perhaps always going to be tough for Hasenhuttl to keep him around.

Should Southampton sell Ings?

Although the Austrian has suggested in the past that Ings won’t be leaving this summer, he must now decide whether or not to cash in on the former Liverpool man while he still can, as Ings will be free to leave for nothing at the end of next season when his current contract expires.

The likes of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with the talismanic striker in recent months, which suggests that an exit could well be on the cards after this contract development, but there is a risk that Southampton could seriously struggle in his absence.

Last season saw the striker finish as the Saints’ top scorer with 12 goals, despite regular injury problems, and the season before that, he hit 22 goals in the top-flight, which emphasises just how important he is in this Southampton side.

Therefore, there is a real risk that the financial boost of selling him this summer would be outweighed by the potential threat of relegation next season without him, as there is no guarantee that the likes of Che Adams, or a new striker, would be able to step up should the “outstanding” Ings depart.

It is undoubtedly a huge blow for Hasenhuttl that one of his most influential players is clearly keen to leave and it will be interesting to see whether or not Ings remains a Southampton player by the time the Premier League season kicks off next month.

This update is likely to have Saints fans fuming as their club are pretty much in a lose-lose situation. They either sell Ings this summer to get a decent fee for him or lose him for free in a year’s time. Either way, it’s far from ideal for Southampton.

يقترب الدولي الفرنسي كليمونت لينجليت، مدافع فريق برشلونة، من الرحيل عن صفوف النادي الكتالوني في نافذة الانتقالات الصيفية.

وكان الفرنسي قد انضم إلى برشلونة صيف عام 2018 قادمًا من إشبيلية مقابل 36 مليون يورو، وفي موسمه الأول ظهر بشكل أكثر من رائع، ولكن بعد ذلك مستواه بدأ في التراجع.

لينجليت مُنذ الموسم الماضي، ورط برشلونة في أكثر من مباراة، والمدافع الفرنسي خرج كذلك من حسابات مدربه الإسباني تشافي هرنانديز، وبات الخيار الرابع في قلب الدفاع، خلف بيكيه، أروخو وإريك جارسيا.

وحسب صحيفة “سبورت” الكتالونية، فإن برشلونة لن يمانع رحيل لينجليت هذا الصيف، خاصًة أن تشافي لا يرغب في استمراره، ويريد كذلك النادي الاستفادة بشكل مادي من رحيله.

The Verdict: Not worth the money

Traore can be a devastating attacker when he is full flight – Jurgen Klopp has hailed him as ‘undefendable’ after a strong performance against the Reds in March – but his end product also leaves a huge amount to be desired.

The 25-year-old scored and assisted just twice apiece in all of last season in the league, with his powerful runs often amounting to nothing.

For that reason, Liverpool should look elsewhere to reinforce their wide attacking options, especially as they will likely have to pay a huge amount for the £27m-rated Spain international.

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)03-Jul-2002The Hampshire Cricket League is asking clubs if they want a ban on imported overseas players and professional cricketers turning out on Saturday afternoons next season.They are proposing that the 28-year old competition, which embraces 184 clubs and 314 teams, reverts to being a recreational league, primarily for English players.The League, in a forthright newsletter just issued to clubs, expresses concern at the ever increasing number of overseas players turning out every Saturday afternoon.Currently a record number of 26 foreigners are playing in the Hampshire League this summer, seven of them for teams who play in the regional divisions.However, before formulating the final details, the HCL management committee is canvassing clubs on whether they will back a "no foreign imports" policy at the next annual meeting due in February 2003.Clubs have been told that the league "does not believe it is any longer appropriate for clubs in a recreational league to be spending either their – or their sponsors – money on players who are generally being used to move a club to a position in the league its playing strength does not justify."In the HL’s opinion, this money would be better used on facilities (eg ground improvements) that benefit all club members."In many cases, clubs – mainly through generous sponsors and benefactors – fork out substantial fares to fly players in and then fix them up with jobs.Some coach team-mates and youngsters, and some prepare the pitches. But the league believes that an increasing number are brought in to score runs, take wickets … and ultimately secure quick-fix promotions.These clubs would argue that it is upto them how they spend their money and not up to the league.Some clubs argue that the presence of overseas players lifts the overall standard of HL cricket – a competition which many participants consider to be a largely enjoyable summer weekend recreational pursuit.Others disagree, claiming it creates an uneven playing field, particularly for the clubs who either cannot afford to recruit overseas or who simply don’t want one at all.Ten clubs with overseas players aboard won promotions in the Hampshire League last summer, with a host of the visiting players finishing high in the divisional averages.Acting Hampshire League chairman Chris James agreed that "There is no doubt about it, a large number of these overseas players are playing below their ability level and they are having a significant effect on games.""You only have to glance at the results in the Daily Echo each week to see that."New Zealander Daniel Barclay, who has already scored two centuries for County Division 4 club Compton & Chandler’s Ford, Hythe & Dibden’s South African ace Eugene Burzler, and Cape Town-based pace bowler Derek Manning, who has taken a hatful of wickets for Fair Oak – are among the overseas players influencing lower division matches this season.Roughly half the Hampshire League clubs backed Fareham & Crofton’s proposal at last February’s annual general meeting to place a ban on all foreign nationals, but which failed to get the necessary two-thirds majority.Concerns were expressed about school-age foreign nationals, genuine overseas visitors in the country on business and those coming to this country having lived and been born abroad."The management committee has discussed these concerns and, insofar as the youngsters are concerned, is proposing that no foreign national under the age of 17 years on August 31 of the relevant season – and possibly all those in full-time education here – should be barred from playing," Mr James explained."We’ve also examined the situation as regards the genuine overseas visitor, the individual who comes to the UK on business, for example."The management committee’s plan is to give the working visitor permission to play but only if he arrives in the country by March 1, plans to remain in the UK for a minimum of one year and has a valid work permit."We think this is a fair deal and covers the concerns some clubs expressed to us in February.Mr James added "it is important that everyone appreciates that these are only proposals and that the league wants to hear from clubs on how they want this difficult issue resolved."There are a variety of different ways of solving the problems, but finding one that suits everyone is clearly going to be difficult," he said.

Cast your minds back to 2017 and you may recall claims of a training ground argument between David Unsworth and two of Everton’s players at the times.

Kevin Mirallas and Morgan Schneiderlin were dropped from the Toffees squad to face Watford in November of that year after reportedly walking out of training.

Unsworth accused the pair of a lack of commitment and told them to go inside if they weren’t prepared to take the session seriously.

Schneiderlin battled back against those claims, commenting that it hadn’t happened but a similar sort of situation is now unravelling again.

It’s not a regular first-team player in question but Rafa Benitez could be heading towards his first Everton disaster over promising young defender Thierry Small.

The left-back has been tipped for great things but has refused a new contract at Goodison Park.

He’s also refusing to return to Finch Farm for pre-season and instead of training with the squad, he is building his fitness with his own personal trainer.

The Toffees have offered Small the opportunity to become more of a part of the senior side, even handing him a locker in the first-team changing room at the training ground.

However, it looks as though the 16-year-old is trying to engineer an exit. A host of sides have been interested in his services including Arsenal, Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Aston Villa.

Small has played once for the first team but it would be a great surprise if he ever builds on that tally. After all, with the youngster’s attitude like it is at the moment, he should have no future at the club.

Described as a “fantastic boy” by the aforementioned Unsworth, it’s safe to say the coach would not be too impressed with his attitude now.

Supporters have been left rather puzzled with the teenager’s decision making this summer. One fan said Small was a bad egg while others claimed his attitude was “embarrassing” and that it “stinks.”

Harsh words but you can understand their point of view. Everton’s desire to entice a player to stay who is so intent on departing Goodison Park is strange but with the potential he possesses, you can see both sides of the coin.

This had the potential to be a key season in Small’s development but with his character being called into question, Benitez may as well sanction an exit.
