Former England defender and now pundit Danny Mills has been reacting to a recent update regarding Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie.

According to the Daily Mail, relayed by the Daily Record last weekend, the 26-year-old’s deal actually expires in January 2022.

It was thought his contract ran until next summer, but it seems as if that is not the case.

Former boss Neil Lennon admitted Christie was open to a new challenge at some stage, with the report suggesting he could use this summer’s European Championships as a chance to impress other clubs ahead of a potential Celtic Park exit.

Mills, 43, talking to Football Insider, shared his surprise when asked about the recent news coming out of Parkhead regarding Christie, labelling it as ‘bizarre’.

“I don’t understand that.

“Normally, contracts run from the 1st of July to the 30th of June and that’s every single football contract I’ve ever seen. Unless it’s a short-term deal or a loan.

“I didn’t think that was allowed, in all honesty.

Mills added:

“It’s a bizarre situation. I’ve never heard of that before and I didn’t think it would be allowed.

“All Football League contracts all run 1st of July to 30th of June as standard and that’s how it’s always been.

“I’m not sure who’s done that deal whether it’s a stroke of genius or they’ve just put the wrong date in.”

We’re with Mills as far as the shock factor of the news, and we feel it could impact new CEO Dominic McKay over the coming months, who is going to be faced with numerous tough decisions while rebuilding a stagnant squad.

Should Christie refuse to discuss a new deal, McKay and Celtic may be placed in an awkward situation.

The midfielder regularly been criticised by several supporters during the season, but he’s actually been the club’s second-best Premiership performer with a match rating average of 7.33/10, as per WhoScored.

On that basis, McKay and the rest of the Hoops hierarchy may be torn as to what to do with Christie.

They could look to sell with six months remaining on his contract, with a number of Premier League sides keen at the turn of the year, or they could look to keep him for the first half of the 2021/22 season with the risk of losing him for nothing in January 2022.

It will definitely be a situation to keep a close eye on over the summer…

According to a report by Il Resto del Carlino, via Sport Witness, GSB and West Ham United are ‘dreaming’ of signing former striker Marko Arnautovic this summer and are ‘on his trail’ along with Crystal Palace and Bologna.

West Ham ‘dreaming’ of Arnautovic

Arnautovic, who scored 22 goals and assisted 12 others over 65 appearances for West Ham over his last spell (Transfermarkt), could now return to Europe in the summer two years after departing east London for the Chinese Super League.

Bologna have apparently already held talks with the Austrian’s representatives but this report claims they will face stern competition to sign Arnautovic from both the Irons and Palace.

It is also said that GSB are ‘dreaming’ of his return to the capital and are even preparing a salary offer of around €4 million (£3.4m) per season to convince the striker to make a return.

He was a fan favourite at the London Stadium during his last stay and manager David Moyes even called him ‘unplayable’ due to his mixture of physical strength, pace and class on the ball – but we believe the boat has sailed with Arnautovic.

Linked striking targets such as Tammy Abraham and Ivan Toney come as much better options given their age and goal returns over the last two season.

Abraham has scored 21 goals in 37 Premier League starts over the last two seasons, with Toney bagging an incredible 29 goals and 10 assists in the Championship this campaign alone (WhoScored).

Meanwhile, Arnautovic hasn’t played in a top division for two years, so bringing him back to London would undoubtedly be a gamble, especially on a big contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Marcus Bent has revealed what Duncan Ferguson has told him about working with Carlo Ancelotti.

Ferguson’s final two seasons in his playing career crossed paths with Bent’s two years spent at Goodison Park, and the latter revealed they’re still in contact.

“I speak to him now and then. Dunc’s a hard one to get hold of and a hard one to get anything out of,” he told Football FanCast.

“He’s a very humble man and strict about what he says and what he does on and off the pitch.”

Having spent 11 seasons across two spells with the Toffees, the former Scotland striker returned to Merseyside in 2014 to become part of the coaching staff.

Following the departure of Marco Silva during December 2019, Ferguson became interim manager and remained unbeaten during a four-game spell, which included a memorable victory over Chelsea.

He was rewarded by becoming Ancelotti’s assistant after his appointment as manager later that month and has been working closely with the Italian ever since.

And Bent told Football FanCast that Ferguson has a great responsibility in his role:

“What he has said to me is that he’s good to work with, he asks Duncan’s opinion a lot of the time. The training is good, he lets Dunc take a lot of training sessions, so his opinion counts.

“Dunc is a massive Evertonian and a big part of the club, and he respects Dunc’s opinion.”

Callum Wilson will miss the remainder of Newcastle United’s season with a hamstring injury.

The lowdown

The 29-year-old picked up the injury in the closing stages of Newcastle’s 4-2 win away to Leicester City on Friday night, although the £77,000-a-week striker was able to finish the game.

Wilson has been a vital player for the Magpies this season following his arrival from Bournemouth last summer for a fee of £20m.

His brace at the King Power Stadium took him to 12 goals overall for the campaign – that’s more than double the tally of Joelington, his nearest challenger in the Newcastle ranks with five. His five assists are also a squad-high.

Wilson has already missed seven matches with a hamstring issue in 2021, though, and Newcastle picked up just three points from a possible 21 in his absence.

The latest

Chronicle Live correspondent Lee Ryder has offered Newcastle fans some reassurance on the striker’s fitness, tweeting: “It’s understood Callum Wilson injury not serious and precautionary”.

Fulham’s 2-0 defeat against Burnley on Monday night confirmed both their relegation and Newcastle’s survival, so perhaps this is merely a case of ensuring the Magpies’ star man is 100 per cent fit and firing for the new campaign.

The Toon host champions-elect Manchester City on Friday before ending the campaign against Championship-bound duo Sheffield United and Fulham.

The verdict

The initial concern for Newcastle fans may have been the recurrence of the injury. Indeed, The Athletic journalist Chris Waugh said that it would be ‘understandable’ to worry that Wilson ‘could become susceptible to similar problems in the future’.

However, Ryder’s update should ease any such concerns for now, especially with the Magpies’ top-flight status for 2021/22 being confirmed and now plenty of time for Wilson to recover fully over the summer.
