In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Bull, who made 561 appearances for Wolves, believes Raul Jimenez will be able to come back the same player despite fracturing his skull earlier this season, but thinks we’ll have to wait until next season to see the Mexican in full flow.

Jimenez suffered a fractured skull against Arsenal in November last year but is now back doing some training with the first team as he speeds up his recovery, and potentially aiming to get some game time before the end of the season.

The Mexican’s injury has left a huge void in Wolves’ side which has been clear to see by their results and performances this season with Jimenez being the club’s talisman and a Nuno Santo favourite, having netted 47 times in 110 games for the Midlands side.

Speaking on how the £31.5m-rated Jimenez may come back after his injury and if we will see the same player which Wolves relied so heavily on before his injury, Bull told FFC exclusively:

“I think it’s going to be tough because once you’ve been hit in the head with a 10-tonne hammer and you’ve cracked your skull, you’re going to be wary.

“I’ve interviewed him a few times and he is very mentally prepared, so I think he’ll be very cautious when he first starts playing.

“I think he will come back the same player. However, I doubt it will be this season. I think it’ll be next season because I think Nuno will gradually break him in this season to get his confidence up, and then get him ready for next year.”

Despite not playing since November, Jimenez is still Wolves’ third top scorer with four, only behind Ruben Neves and Pedro Neto who both have five respectively.

In his two previous seasons with Wolves, Jimenez had reached scored 13 and 17 goals respectively. However, he also registered eight and six assists across those two campaigns highlighting how important the Mexican is for Wolves’ general game plan to work.

Carlo Ancelotti’s public façade will be masking his concerns after confirming that Everton will be without goalkeepers Jordan Pickford and Robin Olsen against Manchester City.

The Toffees host Pep Guardiola’s runaway Premier League leaders at Goodison Park on Saturday looking to secure a place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since 2016.

Everton were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United at the penultimate stage that year and will now have to rely on academy shot-stopper Joao Virginia protecting the backline in hopes of booking a trip to Wembley for next month.

Virginia entered the action as a late first half substitute as Everton lost 2-1 to Burnley last weekend to make his Premier League debut, when Pickford was unable to continue after aggravating a prior abdominal injury.

Olsen was not included in the matchday squad for the Clarets game as he continues to overcome an abdominal injury, which the AS Roma loanee had hoped to overcome in time to face Manchester City on Saturday.

However, Ancelotti has stated that neither the Swede nor Pickford will be able to guard the net against Guardiola’s side, while also being without James Rodriguez (calf), Abdoulaye Doucoure (foot) and Fabian Delph (tendon).

“The two goalkeepers are out, Robin Olsen and Jordan Pickford,” Ancelotti said on Friday.

“Jean-Philippe Gbamin is out but we have good news about him. He will start training with the team next week.

Ancelotti added that he is not concerned by his goalkeeper situation going into the weekend as, while Virginia is relatively unproven, he has many positives.

“I’m not worried because Joao is young, without experience, but he has a lot of quality. I am not worried for the absence of the two goalkeepers,” the Everton boss noted, via quotes shared by the Liverpool Echo’s Phil Kirkbride.

However, Ancelotti’s public façade will surely be masking private concerns, as Virginia is set for a baptism of fire against Guardiola’s Manchester City like he has never faced before.

Prior to making his top-flight debut against Burnley last weekend, Virginia’s only first team action for the Toffees had come in a Carabao Cup second round win over League Two side Salford City in September.

He may have kept a clean sheet as Everton secured a 3-0 win, yet left much to the imagination during an intended season-long loan deal with Reading last term which was called short in January after Virginia struggled to establish himself.

The 21-year-old opened the first two games of the Championship season but never stepped foot on the field for a league match with the Royals after that, and failed to make the bench beyond the eighth fixture of the season.

Former Reading boss Mark Bowen was upfront and honest in his assessment of why the loan did not work out, stating in quotes by Berkshire Live before Virginia was recalled:

“He came in as hopefully being a No. 1, but then it changed with Rafael [Cabral] coming in. His experience and ability has kept Virginia on the sidelines. There’s no point hiding from it – it hasn’t gone well for him.

“He trains hard every day, but in terms of his mental well-being and where he sees his future, he has decisions to make… I can’t speak highly enough of him as a professional but coming in at 19, it was a big ask to come in as a starter week in, week out. We’re aware it hasn’t gone well for him.”

Virginia now has to guard Everton’s net against a Manchester City side which has scored 101 goals in 45 games across all competitions this season, including 18 in their last six matches – a very tough task.

Pouco mais de três meses após a estreia como técnico do time profissional do Flamengo, Zé Ricardo reencontra a Ponte Preta, nesta quarta-feira, no Estádio Kleber Andrade, em Cariacica (ES), pelo Campeonato Brasileiro. O treinador tem boas lembranças daquele confronto. O Rubro-Negro venceu por 2 a 1, de virada, no Moisés Lucarelli, em Campinas (SP).

Desde aquele jogo, muita coisa mudou para Zé Ricardo e também para o Flamengo. O comandante da equipe era apenas interino e agora luta por dois títulos importantes: Brasileiro e Sul-Americana. Ele vem recebendo elogios de jogadores, torcedores e dirigentes.

– Zé Ricardo estuda muito e entende bem os nossos adversários. As informações que ele tem nos passado ajudam muito – garante o atacante Fernandinho.

Zé Ricardo conseguiu criar um Flamengo muito mais competitivo do que o do técnico Muricy Ramalho, que se afastou por problemas de saúde. No primeiro semestre, a equipe foi eliminada precocemente de três competições (Primeira Liga, Carioca e Copa do Brasil). Agora, o time tem uma campanha sólida nos pontos corridos e ocupa a vice-liderança do Brasileiro.

Confiante, porém cauteloso, Zé Ricardo espera um jogo complicado diante da Ponte Preta. O Flamengo chega como favorito para o duelo, mas o adversário já busca um espaço no G4.

– A equipe da Ponte Preta é uma das mais equilibradas da competição. Eles venceram o Corinthians com propriedade. O professor Eduardo Baptista é um estudioso e tem a equipe na mão. Será uma partida difícil, mas não tem jeito. Teremos de propor o jogo e fazer valer o nosso mando de campo. Nós esperamos que o estádio esteja lotado – comentou o treinador.

APROVEITAMENTO SUPERIOR AO DE MURICY

Mesmo disputando uma competição de Série A, Zé Ricardo tem números melhores do que os Muricy Ramalho no Flamengo. O antecessor deixou o clube com cerca de 58% de aproveitamento, enquanto o atual comandante tem aproximadamente 62%.

O atual treinador do Rubro-Negro acumula 12 vitórias, três empates e seis derrotas à frente do time. Antes mesmo de conseguir este rendimento, Zé Ricardo já ganhava elogios de Muricy, com quem conversou algumas vezes no Flamengo.

– Ele é um cara preparado e tem que acreditar no potencial dele. Está no caminho certo. A grande vantagem dele, que eu também tive, é que eu no início tive dirigentes que bancaram minha posição quando o Telê (Santana) não estava. Isso que está acontecendo no Flamengo é muito importante – disse o treinador à Rádio Transamérica.

Zé Ricardo foi promovido ao cargo de técnico interino quando o Flamengo oficializou a saída de Muricy. Onze jogos depois, o treinador foi efetivado com bons resultados no comando da equipe.

When then-Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood brought Jordan Veretout to the club back in the summer of 2015, he made it clear just how “delighted” he was at getting a deal done.

The ex-Blackburn midfielder said: “He has played over 140 games in Ligue 1 and is a really exciting young player. I know Veretout is very highly rated over in France, so we are delighted to get this deal over the line.”

Fast forward a year, however, and things hadn’t turned out the way either the player or the club would have wanted at Villa Park, with the team going through a roller-coaster period of managerial changes and relegation from the Premier League as well.

In the end, the Frenchman was sent out on loan, before sealing a more permanent move away from the club when he joined Serie A outfit Fiorentina for around £6m in 2017. Since then, he has been nothing short of incredible, enjoying an impressive rise which is now seeing him shine for one of Italian football’s biggest clubs in AS Roma.

This season has seen him develop into an elite goal-scoring midfielder, netting ten times in 24 games in the league alone, including a match-saving brace against Juventus in a 2-2 draw. It’s no surprise, then, that his market value has shot up considerably, with Transfermarkt now rating him at £31.5m – more than five times the amount for which Villa actually sold him.

However, there were some behind the scenes at Villa Park who did see his potential, with caretaker manager Kevin McDonald in particular saying: “Jordan is a wonderful passer of the ball. He will get better. And he is looking to impose himself in training games. Now he has to do that over a period of time. If he does that, he will be a very, very good player.

“Glenn Hoddle didn’t have to run up and down the pitch. But he was the most wonderful passer this country had in a long, long time. It’s not about being a holding midfielder or an attacking midfielder – Jordan needs to be a midfielder who gets on the ball more than anybody else in the team.”

Niggling injuries didn’t help his cause, but he didn’t even take to the pitch for any of Villa’s last seven Premier League games of the 2015/2016 season, not even making the matchday squad in four of them.

When you see the way he is shining now, though, there must surely be a sense of regret that they couldn’t keep hold of Veretout or ever get to see the best of him at Villa Park.

Aston Villa signing David Brooks this summer could spell the end of Ross Barkley’s time at the club.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Villa are interested in signing Bournemouth ace Brooks, and Lee Hendrie recently threw his backing behind a move for the 23-year-old.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I’m a big fan of David Brooks. I’ve seen a fair bit of him this season and he’s an absolute talent, he really is. He’s a young man with bags of ability and I think if he comes into Villa, I think he’d be a great addition.

“He reminds me of Jack (Grealish). He’s very slight, he’s very mobile and, again, he’s another player that could set the Prem on fire if he’s given a chance.”

Bye-bye Barkley

After enjoying a fine start to his Villa career following his season-long loan move from fellow Premier League side Chelsea – he scored in his first two top-flight games for the club – it’s all been downhill for Barkley.

The England international has since bagged just one other time in the league, while he still only has one solitary assist to his name. It’s no surprise then that reports in recent weeks have claimed that Villa are not convinced over making Barkley’s move permanent, and it’s exactly why Dean Smith’s side must surely go for Brooks this summer instead.

He has managed eight goal contributions in 24 Championship games this campaign, and quite appealingly for Smith, he is able to play anywhere behind the striker.

That versatility should be music to the ears of the Villa boss, who has seen his side hit with injuries to numerous attacking players this season including the likes of Barkley, Jack Grealish, Trezeguet and Bertrand Traore among others.

Having the £16.2m-rated Brooks in his ranks would go a long way to addressing a lack of strength in depth, and it might just be the final nail in the coffin for any chance of Villa signing Barkley permanently.
