The twists and turns in the Championship show no signs of stopping in what is turning out to be a season for the ages in England’s second tier.

Sheffield United were, at one point, about to go four points clear of Leeds United on Saturday but instead found themselves being leapfrogged by their promotion rivals after their defeat to Bristol City at Bramall Lane.

Chris Wilder’s side may have been downed by a superb hat-trick by Andreas Weimann at the weekend but their promotion hopes are nowhere near over but could depend on whether they decide to call time on Kieran Dowell’s time in the starting eleven.

The Everton loanee has failed to produce on a consistent basis and at the age of 21, he does not have the necessary experience needed to lead the side to their return to the top-flight. In contrast, a recall by Wilder for Paul Coutts could prove to be a masterstroke.

The Scottish midfielder, who is valued at £360k (by Transfermarkt), has played a role in two promotions during his career, the first being with Peterborough United in 2009 and the second occurring in the 2016/17 season with the Blades. Whereas he was a regular in both of these campaigns, Coutts has only been handed sporadic appearances by his manager this season which has seen United place themselves in a superb position in the Championship.

In order to completely secure a return to the top flight in May, it is paramount that Wilder involves the 30-year-old over the coming weeks starting with his side’s trip to Preston North End on April 6th.

If the former Oxford United continues to ignore Coutts in favour of Dowell, he could pay the price at the end of the season by missing out on promotion after what has been an incredibly impressive campaign in charge of United.

If Arsenal’s dominant win on Monday night proved anything, it’s that with the correct squad, Unai Emery can work absolute wonders.

Indeed, the Gunners have already picked up their attacking game under the Spaniard, becoming a joy to watch with their fast-paced, creative style and it’s starting to look more and more obvious as to why the club appointed him as Arsene Wenger’s successor as a relative shock.

However, as ever, it’s their defence which has held them back. While Emery’s experimented with many defensive combinations, none of them succeeded amid a spate of injuries seriously undermining his attempts to build a real base. Worryingly, even in comfortable positions, the North London giants have surrendered points and could’ve been in a much better position had their defending been stronger.

So, the former Sevilla coach is looking to improve upon this and according to reports from the Daily Mail, he’s aiming to sign Michael Keane from Everton to solidify his defence. Undoubtedly, the England international’s put in some commendable performances recently, being especially commanding against Liverpool and West Ham United amid a topsy-turvy season under Marco Silva, Keane’s starting to look like the player who was linked with Manchester United during his time at Burnley.

In 29 appearances, he’s helped them keep 10 clean-sheets, putting in strong performances against some big guns. He boasts a 64% tackling success, has made 163 clearances and won 209 duels (stats via Premier League) this season and the assertive defender’s been at the right place at the right time, clearing danger, thwarting strikers and commanding his side’s defence with authority.

At his best, he looks like he’d be one of the best defenders the Gunners have had in years.

Arsenal need a leader like him to marshal their defence. In desperate need of replacing the error-prone Shkodran Mustafi, Keane – who only has a Transfermarkt rating of £22.5m – could be the perfect antidote to the frustrating German.

Calciomercato are claiming that Jordan Veretout’s agent, Mario Giuffredi, was in the stands on Thursday night.

It is suggested that he could have been there to discuss the possibility of a deal for his client, who is currently excelling for Fiorentina after a rather nightmarish campaign with Aston Villa earlier in his career.

However, Arsenal do not seem to be the only side thought to be interested in the midfielder, with Napoli also believed to be keen on the 26-year-old.

The Verdict:

News that Guiffredi was in the stands on Thursday night when both clubs were in action against each other could easily appear to suggest that a move to either of the sides could be on the cards in the summer.

And, Emery and Arsenal must look to beat Napoli to his signature. Veretout has shown how good of a footballer he can be and his nightmare spell in England with Aston Villa should only be put down as a blip.

With Aaron Ramsey set to depart in the summer, the Frenchman, who is valued at £22.5million (Transfermarkt) could be an ideal replacement and could make life after the Wales international rather comfortable for the Gunners.

The 26-year-old has shown that he is more than capable in front of goal, with five strikes to his name, whilst he has also proved he has the vision and creativity that has been desperately lacking for Arsenal in the middle of the field as he has provided his team-mates with three assists in Serie A.

A threat from set-pieces, he is also hugely versatile and could offer Emery plenty of different options in the midfield, whether that be more defensively or in the attacking third of the pitch.

ريان انضم إلى أكاديمية ليون، قبل عامين عندما كان يبلغ من العمر 15 عامًا، ثم تم تصعيده للفريق الأول في يناير من العام الجاري.

وقال شرقي في تصريحات نقلتها شبكة “جول” العالمية في نسختها الإنجليزية: “اكتشافي؟ ذلك تم في موقف سيارات”.

Departures are surely inevitable at Celtic after this season.

Before they can brace for some potentially big outgoing moves, they need to offload the unnecessary stock from the squad as the club look to move on from the Brendan Rodgers era. Indeed, there are a few who must be surplus to requirement, earning big wages for doing absolutely nothing.

At the top of such a list is outcast goalkeeper Dorus de Vries, who’s yet to make an appearance this season. The 38-year-old goalkeeper, signed by Brendan Rodgers from Swansea City, is in the final few months of his Celtic contract and the club will ship him off after the campaign, according to Football Insider.

Thanks to Scott Bain’s commendable work and fitness, there’s no real need for someone else. At long last, Craig Gordon has some real competition between the sticks and there’s also the small matter of young Conor Hazard waiting in the wings.

Amazingly, the experienced de Vries (who the Daily Star claimed on slide 5/27 earns £7.5kp/w) has made the matchday squad in the past five encounters but hasn’t been used a single time. Experience only goes so far in prolonging one’s career.

Indeed, the Hoops are paying him for nothing right now and can benefit from cutting his wages from their financial structure.

Going forward, Celtic will be able to use that freed up salary in their budget to possibly add it to a new signing’s wages instead.

Regardless, it’s a smart move from those behind the scenes to remove the unnecessary talents from the squad. The goalkeeper position is in safe hands thanks to Bain’s fantastic work, as the Hoops can now save some finances by removing the ineffective de Vries from their wage bill.
