Leeds’ Ouasim Bouy posts cryptic video

Leeds United fans have probably never heard or Ouasim Bouy – or at least won’t believe he’s still under contract at Elland Road.

He was one of the first signings of the Andrea Radrizzani era in 2017 but has never made a senior appearance for the club, and to this day, is still dining out on his contract, which is believed to be a “respectable first-team salary”. That’s a lot of money from the chairman’s pocket gone to waste in nearly three years.

In the summer, Marcelo Bielsa sent him away from Thorp Arch as he clearly wasn’t going to be part of his plans and having not been able to secure a loan for him, he’s been without a club and not been playing.

This week, he posted a cryptic video and message to

/B_kpMJUFEa9/” data-lasso->Instagram that suggested he was preparing for something…

When the Championship season resumes, Buoy certainly won’t be involved so it leaves question marks over what he’s training for.

The 26-year-old joined the club on a free transfer from Juventus and was once touted as the biggest European talent born post-1993 – yes, really.

Bouy could well see out his contract with another year still to run. That would be the definition of stealing a living.

Is this Everton’s new Ross Barkley?

When Tim Cahill hails someone at Everton, Toffees supporters must know they are onto a winner.

The outspoken Australian hasn’t been seen at Goodison Park for a while now but when questioned back in 2011 who the most talented player he’d worked with was, two words were spoken; Ross Barkley.

Cahill then described the attacking midfielder as a “special talent” before Martin Keown predicted further down the line that he’d be one of the best players we’ve seen in England.

You could understand that assumption. After all, just seven years prior, Wayne Rooney was making a splash in the royal blue at Goodison Park.

Yet, while Rooney went on to become England’s record goalscorer, Barkley’s career has sadly petered out.

He joined Chelsea and after not receiving the game time he desired, joined Aston Villa on loan last term.

Frustratingly, he couldn’t find form in the Midlands either, scoring four goals and registering a solitary assist.

The plan, so Barkley says, was to play him as a box to box midfielder at Villa Park. It was Dean Smith’s grand plan to link him up with the dynamic Jack Grealish and the effervescent John McGinn.

Though, while those two thrived, Barkley merely watched on and marvelled at someone like Grealish. Only a few years ago, similar words were being muttered about his career instead.

But why is Barkley’s name relevant to Everton in 2021? Well, he still serves as a benchmark for those making the breakthrough from academy football to the senior team.

One man hoping to do that this season is 17-year-old Isaac Price.

The midfielder hasn’t been seen in the first-team yet but he did train alongside the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and James Rodriguez last term.

That will have served as a valuable experience for a teenager who’s cut from a similar cloth as Barkley.

Sources have told The Athletic that he is “too good” not to make the step up eventually and words from U23 boss David Unsworth supplement that theory.

Speaking to the Echo, he said of Price back in April: “Isaac is a box-to-box midfielder. He is a great passer, he’s got a bit of everything.

“He still has to develop physically, as you can see, he’s not the finished article physically, but that will come.”

Possessing the ability to join the attack late and bring his team forward with the ball, there are plenty of parallels between Barkley and Price.

However, it’s their passing that’s arguably most similar. For instance, the former once produced 16 assists in two seasons for the Toffees as he really started to make impressive strides at Goodison.

At such a young age, Price has plenty of work to do before he is considered for the first team. Though, with such an exciting array of talent in his locker, it surely won’t be long before he’s unleashed by Rafa Benitez.

Sunderland fans unhappy with Jack Ross after four draws in six games

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Sunderland fans have been reflecting on yet another 1-1 draw, this time with Blackpool, and let’s just say more than a few are starting to lose patience with Jack Ross.

Sunderland are still the only side in England’s top four divisions to score in every league game this season, but they have managed more than one goal just once in the last six games, with four of those games ending 1-1.

That was exactly the case again on Tuesday night, as the Black Cats were forced to come from behind to rescue a point against Blackpool.

The visitors took the lead through Armand Gnanduillet, and if truth be told they were more than good value for their lead.

As has so often been the case in recent weeks, Ross’ side struggled to break the visitors down and rarely threatened Mark Howard’s goal.

The late equaliser came from a Jack Baldwin header, but Sunderland are now four points behind second-place Barnsley with only one game in hand on the Yorkshire outfit, meaning the Black Cats’ fate is no longer in their own hands.

You can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below, where fans are slamming Ross for what was a really underwhelming performance…

Reid admits to regrets over time at Forest

[ad_pod ]Andy Reid has admitted to talkSPORT that he regrets the way he behaved during his spell at Nottingham Forest under Stuart Pearce.

Reid spent five years at Forest between 2011 and 2016, making 262 appearances for the club.

What’s the word?

Pearce spent under a year at the City Ground, between July 2014 and February 2015.

Reid started the first six games of the season under Pearce but sustained a serious groin injury against Derby County in September and missed the remainder of the season.

The former Republic of Ireland winger made his return in August 2015, with Pearce having already been long since sacked.

And Reid admits that he was not in the right frame of mind to support Pearce through his reign.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “I really struggled after I got injured, you know. I didn’t feel that I was probably going to make it back and I was struggling mentally at the time.

“In some ways, I probably let Stuart down a little bit around the place, because I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to maybe help him and I probably should have done it a little bit more.

“So I feel like I’ve probably let him down, as did a lot of people.”

Pearce’s bed was made

After a sterling start to his tenure at Forest, Pearce struggled to keep the club’s form going.

A run of seven games unbeaten – including five wins – raised hopes of promotion to the Premier League.

However, following a 5-3 win over Fulham in September, Forest went nine games without a win, including five draws.

They never strung together more than three wins for the remainder of the season, even after Pearce’s departure, and finished the season in 14th, 19 points adrift of the play-offs.

Reid is being too hard on himself, then, to claim that he let Pearce down.

Forest’s form was largely down to the man in the dugout, not the winger on the treatment table.

Leicester fans discuss potential Puel successors

[ad_pod ]

Leicester City have parted company with manager Claude Puel, the club have confirmed on their official website.

The Foxes announced on Sunday that Puel has left the King Power Stadium. Puel joined the club in October 2017 but has struggled in the dugout this season.

Leicester are currently 12th in the Premier League but were beaten 4-1 by Crystal Palace on Saturday in what has proved to be the Frenchman’s final game in charge.

Indeed, the club have not won a game since New Year’s Day, when they defeated Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park.

Since then, Puel has seen his side beaten by Southampton, Wolves, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Palace in the Premier League, along with Newport County in the FA Cup. A surprise 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield is the last point the club picked up.

And Leicester fans are now anticipating the club’s next move, with many calling for either Brendan Rodgers or Rafael Benitez to come into the fold.

Player Zone: Ability to change perceptions more important than Almiron’s form

[ad_pod ]

Rafa Benitez fought tooth and nail to bring Atlanta United star Miguel Almiron to the Premier League in January amid ongoing doubts over the future of the club both on and off the pitch but – luckily for Newcastle supporters who were surely fearful the Spaniard would quit – the Magpies boss got his man.

Arriving on Tyneside for a club-record £20m fee, the Paraguayan crossed the Atlantic with the hope of the Toon Army on his shoulders, counting on him being the final piece in Rafa’s black and white jigsaw. The former Liverpool boss has found great success with a 5-4-1 system since the new year began but it was painfully evident that the team lacked pace on the counter – enter Almiron.

The defensive setup requires runners in behind when the ball is won back and players who can pick the right pass when breaking into the final third – both of which are rare commodities for the St James’ Park outfit.

On paper, Almiron, who chalked up 12 goals and 13 assists in the MLS last season and whose strengths include dribbling and passing, should bring both to the team; in his first few appearances in the famous black and white he has showed that eventually he will do exactly that.

But the speedster is striving to become the most successful of a number of arrivals from the States – Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan and Almiron’s new teammate DeAndre Yedlin have all made the enormous step up in the past with varying success – while also managing both the pressure of being a record-buy, as well as the player who should fire the Magpies to safety.

That’s a lot of expectation for one player.

In his four appearances for Newcastle so far, Almiron has yet to net or tee up a teammate but, particularly in victories over Huddersfield and Burnley, he showed real promise. Right now, though, the Magpies don’t need glimpses, they need goals and assists if they are to survive the drop.

The dynamic playmaker failed to build on those fantastic showings against the Terriers and Clarets as he was silenced by West Ham in the 2-0 loss on Saturday, with Hammers Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini stealing the show instead.

For any of the Toon Army who had expected the maestro to solve their on-pitch struggles with a snap of the fingers, that lacklustre showing should serve as a reminder of the huge challenges facing Almiron if he is to eventually transform the side.

Perhaps in terms of on-pitch impact, there may have been better options for Newcastle to make in January with half of the season to go. The 13-cap international has surely, however, somewhat restored the Newcastle fans’ faith in Mike Ashley, or at the very least lifted the mood of a club that felt trapped under a dark cloud.

In fact, since reports of an agree fee emerged on the 29th of January, Newcastle have won three out of six Premier League games. Before that, they’d won three in their previous eleven. Even the 29th itself is significant; that evening, they beat Manchester City.

Prior to Almiron’s arrival, Michael Owen had been Newcastle’s record transfer – a £17m signing that they made almost 14 years ago – so the much-anticipated passing of that mantle was of huge relief to the Toon Army.

The risk attached to the move is extremely enticing, too; rather than splashing eight figures on a likely-overpriced Premier League player, shelling out a club-record fee for someone who is completely the opposite but could prove to be an absolute bargain in years to come is a gutsy move, and one that appeared to catch the imagination of the fans.

Matty from The Magpie Channel recalls the greatest match in Newcastle’s recent history in the video below and admits he “misses” Sunderland…

Encompassing all that, though, is the fact that just over three months ago, the Toon Army were surely fearful that everything good about their club was slowly sliding down the drain and the mood was at a real low.

The signing of Almiron has seen the Newcastle faithful’s feelings of defeat and dismay morph to those of optimism and anticipation. Regardless of whether the 5-foot-10 ace can justify his £20m price tag on the pitch this season, he has, without a doubt, gone a long way to repaying that fee off of it already.
