Man United chiefs think £42m West Ham player is perfect for Ruben Amorim

Manchester United officials have set their sights on signing a player from West Ham United this summer, with Red Devils officials under the impression that he’d suit Ruben Amorim down to the ground.

Players tipped to leave West Ham this summer

Aaron Cresswell, Vladimir Coufal, Danny Ings and Michail Antonio are all out of contract at the London Stadium this summer, meaning Graham Potter, co-chair David Sullivan and Hammers transfer chiefs could be forced to orchestrate a serious summer rebuild.

Carlos Soler is also set to return to PSG after his east London loan, as things stand, with no official decision made on whether West Ham will trigger the £17 million option to buy in his temporary deal, while there are some reports that Jean-Clair Todibo could be sold right after his obligation to buy from Nice gets activated.

Lukasz Fabianski will leave on a free at the end of this season if West Ham don’t activate the one-year extension clause in his contract as well, which would put an end to the Pole’s seven-year stay at the club.

Lucas Paqueta’s future remains uncertain, amid rumours that clubs in Brazil are interested in poaching the midfielder as he battles spot-fixing allegations off the field.

Mohammed Kudus has been linked with Arsenal and Liverpool ahead of the next transfer window, and there are suggestions that the Ghanaian’s contract includes an £85 million release clause which will become active this summer.

Kudus has apparently shown frustration behind-the-scenes at West Ham, and was unsettled during Julen Lopetegui’s brief tenure in charge. However, it is very debatable whether clubs will be prepared to pay £85 million for his services later this year.

Meanwhile, amid his excellent loan spell at Real Sociedad, defender Nayef Aguerd is believed to be attracting attention from elite clubs.

West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd attracting Man United interest

Real Madrid have already expressed interest in Aguerd, with the Morocco international standing out as Sociedad’s best performer by average match rating over 19 La Liga starts this campaign, according to WhoScored.

The 28-year-old is making a real success of his stint in La Liga, and Sociedad are believed to be attempting a permanent deal for the centre-back before next season.

Nayef Aguerd for Real Sociedad.

However, as per a Spanish media source, Imanol Alguacil’s side will face stiff competition from Old Trafford.

Indeed, Man United are plotting a move to sign Aguerd from West Ham this summer, and the club are said to be convinced that the African would slot into Amorim’s system perfectly.

However, as per other reports, Aguerd won’t come cheap to suitors following his brilliant 2024/2025 campaign. West Ham will apparently demand around £42 million to sell Aguerd, which would give Potter’s side a £12 million net profit on the player after they paid £30 million to bring him in from Rennes on a five-year contract in 2022.

Misbah on PCB rehiring Arthur: 'Slap on Pakistan cricket'

Former head coach blames “our own system” for disrespecting and discrediting “our own people” and local coaches

Former Pakistan captain and coach Misbah-ul-Haq sees the likely rehiring of Mickey Arthur by the PCB as “a slap on Pakistan cricket”. Arthur is likely to come on board as the Pakistan men’s team director. Misbah blamed former Pakistan players for damaging the credibility of the system and forcing the PCB, led at the moment by Najam Sethi, to look outside the country for top coaching roles. The PCB’s talks with Arthur, who had coached Pakistan from 2016 to 2019, had stalled three weeks ago but have picked up considerable pace again. So much so that the board is believed to be close to agreeing a deal with him as team director and not, as in his previous stint, as head coach. The Pakistan job, should Arthur accept it, will run concurrently to his long-term deal with Derbyshire. Arthur does not want to leave the Derby job and both parties have worked out an agreement and schedule allowing him to fulfill both roles. It will be an unusual arrangement for international cricket, in which Arthur will not be with the Pakistan team on every tour but will have a handpicked group of support staff running operations.Related

Mickey Arthur set to be appointed Pakistan team director

“It’s a slap on our cricket system that we are not able to find a high-profile full-time coach,” Misbah told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s a shame that the best ones do not want to come and we insist on having someone who is looking at Pakistan as a second option.”I blame our own system, which is vulnerable enough with so many weak lines for anyone to exploit it. We are to be blamed ourselves that we have disrespected and discredited our own people to make a bad image. The present and former lot don’t respect each other, with media and former players using their own YouTube channels for ratings, damaging the credibility and value of our cricket which, as as result, gives an impression that we are not capable.”The Pakistan cricket fan is always disgruntled; he is picking up things from the media and is under the wrong impression. Players speaking against each other with grudges and talking openly with disdain just devalues our community, and that becomes the common perception. The game is hardly a subject of objective and constructive discussion.”Cricket is the most popular sport in the country but sadly never hits the headlines in the right way. It’s chaos; former cricketers ridiculing their fellow cricketers on national channels with fans getting the wrong sense. There is no empathy, no respect, and no conducive environment in the cricketing quarter of our country.”Mickey Arthur is set to join PCB as team director for the men’s team•AFP

Misbah’s comments on Arthur come with their own context, of course. Misbah was part of the committee that recommended the discontinuation of Arthur’s tenure after the 2019 World Cup. And he then replaced Arthur in the head coach position, with unprecedented influence by also becoming – uniquely – the chief selector. Misbah then resigned with a year left in the role, in September 2021.There has always been plenty of debate in Pakistan about foreign and local coaches, and Misbah said that the handling of each individual has been inconsistent by the PCB administration, with local coaches facing more scrutiny.”PCB is always ready to back foreign coaches but never supports the local ones,” Misbah said. “They are fond of having overseas coaches because they think locals can easily be politicised and are incapable. But do we know it’s the PCB bureaucracy who politicised the structure? They throw the local ones under the bus when they come under pressure and there has never been accountability of this bureaucracy in PCB. It’s the mismanagement and the consistent changes at the helm that is a problem and we are never able to find one solid line for our cricket.”Now there is a common narrative that Pakistan cricket does not even have a single capable guy and they are forced to look outside. Successful teams like India have completely shifted to homegrown coaches but sadly the policies here are so inconsistent and vague that we are never able to reach a consensus on what we want to do. We have some very good people in our system who can contribute well like Haji (Mohammad Akram), Aaqib Javed, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Waqar Younis, etc. but their reputation has been tarnished so badly and people think they are not right for the job.”During Ehsan Mani’s tenure, the PCB tried to rope in younger former cricketers but several former players were reluctant to join because of the board’s inherent instability and internal working culture. Wasim Akram is a prime example, having always distanced himself from taking up a PCB job and has preferred to work on a short-term role away from public scrutiny. Inzamam joined as chief selector and decided not to take a long-term role either, after completing his original tenure.Under Mani, the PCB had formed a blueprint for developing home-grown coaches and revamped the National Cricket Academy by turning it into a high performance centre for player and coach development, and recruited a large number of coaches in the system. But Ramiz Raja, after becoming PCB chairman, brought in overseas coaches at the grassroots and domestic level and reset the entire structure.

Arsenal set to offer contract to Bayern star ahead of cheap Emirates move

Arsenal have plans on making the summer window an exciting one under Mikel Arteta and could now swoop for an exciting star who is available on a free transfer, per reports.

Arsenal's main transfer priorities this summer

While the Gunners’ Premier League title challenge has fizzled out, they still have hope that a famous Champions League triumph could be on the cards if they can navigate past Real Madrid at the quarter-final stage.

Admittedly, that is easier said than done, but Arteta’s men haven’t given up hope of winning Europe’s famous prize. Regardless, the upcoming window is set to see some major transfer priorities addressed at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal manager MikelArteta

Bringing in competition to bolster the forward line is at the top of the agenda, with Juventus star Kenan Yildiz now of interest to Arsenal despite potentially costing £75.7 million to prize away from Serie A.

Centrally, Alexander Isak is the Gunners’ dream attacking target. His form at Newcastle has been nothing short of spectacular, so it is no surprise that £150 million has been quoted as the fee needed to take him off the hands of Eddie Howe.

For now, supporters need to wait until summer for confirmation of arrivals. Still, it could be their lucky day following news that Arsenal are set to escalate their window business.

Arsenal to offer contract to Bayern Munich's Leroy Sane

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal are set to offer a contract to Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane, who is on course to become a free agent this summer with his deal at Bayern Munich expiring.

Having formerly worked with him at Manchester City, Arteta is keen to seal a deal even if the German international’s wage demands require some negotiation in the coming months.

Arsenal have now done "a lot of the groundwork" to sign "prolific" £59m ace

The Gunners could have a good chance of winning the race for a top striker…

ByDominic Lund Mar 21, 2025

Labelled “special” by Pep Guardiola in 2019, Sane has registered nine goals and five assists in 35 appearances across all competitions this campaign.

Famed for his pace and end product, the former Manchester City star has also laid on 26 chances in the Bundesliga and is one of the most renowned left-wingers on the planet.

Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli may have something to say about any prospective arrival. Nevertheless, the chance to sign proven experience on a free transfer may help the Gunners move to the next level.

Complementing Sane with a premium striker to combine with appears to be the plan of action for a club desperate to get themselves in and around domestic honours on a regular basis, so let’s see if they can push an agreement over the line.

E a nossa é difícil.

Mohsin Khan: 'I had given up hope of playing cricket at one point'

The LSG fast bowler looks back at a rough year: “The doctor had said if I was late by another month they would have had to amputate my hand”

Moody: Mohsin showed great composure in the last over

Lucknow Super Giants fast bowler Mohsin Khan dedicated his match-winning performance against Mumbai Indians to his father, who was in hospital until a day before the game on Tuesday.”Sadly, my father was in the hospital, in the ICU, he just got discharged yesterday so I was playing the match for him,” Mohsin said after successfully defending 11 in the final over of the chase. “He was probably watching the game on TV. So I was playing for him. He was in the ICU for the last ten days. He must be very happy.”While speaking to the broadcaster at the end of the game, Mohsin also reflected on his tough 12 months. After taking 14 wickets in nine matches with an economy of 5.97 in his debut IPL season in 2022, Mohsin suffered a serious shoulder injury and did not play any competitive cricket for a whole year.Related

He wasn’t fit for the first half of IPL 2023, and the game against Mumbai was only the second time he was bowling this season, after returning figures of 1 for 42 in three overs against Titans.”It was a very tough time and I had given up hope of playing cricket at one point because I was not able to even lift my hand, forget bowling,” Mohsin said at the press conference after the match. “I was not able to straighten [my hand], my physio worked alongside me. It was medical related, it was quite scary, as the doctor had said if I was late by another month they would have had to amputate my hand.”Regarding my injury, I would first like to say that no cricketer should suffer this kind of condition. It was quite strange, my artery was blocked, my nerve was blocked.”Mohsin conceded 21 in his first two overs for the wicket of Nehal Wadhera and he was entrusted with bowling the final over, to Tim David and Cameron Green. Using a mix of slower balls and yorkers, Mohsin gave away only five runs to earn LSG two crucial points that took then to No. 3 in the points table.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“I was just trying to do what I do in practice. That’s my strength. I just followed that,” Mohsin said. “Krunal [Pandya] also came and asked me what I was going to do. I told him, ‘, I will do what I have been doing so far.'”I was just trying to keep myself calm and not look at the scorecard. I just thought that I have to simply bowl six balls. I wasn’t looking at the runs, whether they need 10 runs or 11 runs. I was just thinking that I have to bowl six good balls.”Because the wicket was gripping I thought I will bowl slower balls. I beat the batter with the first two balls. I was just trying to change that up with yorkers. It was also reversing a little.”Mohsin said he was thankful to the LSG team management for picking him against Mumbai, despite his poor outing in Ahmedabad”I am also very grateful for the faith shown in me by the team. My last game wasn’t good but they played me in this one,” he said. “Especially Gautam [Gambhir] sir, Vijay [Dahiya] sir and the rest of the support staff, they showed trust in me and played me.”Krunal Pandya, who has taken over as LSG’s stand-in captain after the injury to KL Rahul, said Mohsin was mentally strong.”Mohsin is someone who has a really, really big heart. And if you have a big heart in this sport, you go a long way. And that is what Mohsin is all about,” Krunal said. “Really happy for him. He has not played any cricket in the last one year. He went through a very serious surgery. And then to come here and straightaway play IPL in such a high-pressure situation, that shows how strong mentally he is. He has a big heart and when someone has a big heart, the sky is the limit.”LSG are now level with Chennai Super Kings on 15 points, behind on net run rate, and a victory in their final league game -against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on May 20 – will confirm their place in the playoffs.

Their next Bale: Spurs are brewing a 17-year-old "future superstar"

They might have had a few years of dire football under previous managers, but Tottenham Hotspur have always been a team that prides itself on playing football the ‘right way.’

Fans want to see exciting, attacking and invigorating football, and while it hasn’t always brought success, that’s what the North Londoners have usually endeavoured to play.

As a result, the club have seen a whole host of incredible attackers play for them over the years, especially on the wing.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecoglou

Perhaps the most exciting of them all in modern history was the sublime Gareth Bale, and in good news, it looks like Hotspur Way may have just produced the next version of the Welsh legend.

Spurs' great wingers

Before getting to the player who could be Spurs’ next great winger, it’s worth looking at a couple of the club’s greats in that position in recent history, starting with someone who perhaps does not get the recognition he deserves from other fans: Aaron Lennon.

aaron-lennon-transfer-gossip-tottenham-hotspur-postecoglou-leeds-united-tyler-adams

The former Lilywhites ace joined the club for just £1m from Leeds United in the summer of 2005 and remained in North London for almost a decade before he moved to Everton in February 2015.

During his long stint with the club, the Englishman amassed an incredible 364 appearances, in which he scored 30 goals, provided 76 assists and was a part of the last Lilywhites side to win a trophy when he started the 2008 League Cup final against London rivals Chelsea – he scored a couple against the red lot down the road as well.

A winger who looks set to cross the decade mark at the club this summer is Son Heung-min, who put pen to paper and moved to North London in a £22m deal from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2015.

Since then, he’s played 448 games, scored 173 goals, provided 95 assists, been handed the captain’s armband, and started in the club’s only Champions League final in June 2019.

There can be no doubt over the South Korean’s status as a Spurs and Premier League icon for his incredible exploits over the years, but it would be fair to say that neither he nor Lennon could reach the levels Bale did during his peak at the club.

That peak was the 12/13 season, in which he scored 26 goals and provided ten assists in just 44 appearances, totalling 3891 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.22 games, or every 108.08 minutes.

It was a campaign that saw Real Madrid pay a world-record £85m fee for his services, and as things stand, it looks like Hotspur Way might have just produced a young talent who could one day be the club’s new Bale.

Spurs' new Bale

One of the few positives to come out of this season for Tottenham Hotspur has been the development of their youngsters, such as Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and academy star Mikey Moore.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The surface-level ones include the fact he’s a left-winger, he made his debut for the club as a teenager and is British, but the most significant is how well he has played in the academy and how those in the know are talking about him.

For example, in just 34 appearances for the Lilywhites’ various youth sides, the “future superstar,” as dubbed by respected analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored a staggering 21 goals and provided 15 assists.

That means the teenage sensation is currently averaging 1.05 goal involvements every game in the academy, which is incredibly impressive.

That’s not all, though, as even though he is still just 17 and has battled to keep fit at points this season, the Southwark-born prospect has made quite the impression in the few appearances he’s made for the first team, and was just named in GOAL.com’s top 50 wonderkids.

GOAL.com's 10 best wonderkids in world football.

Most notably, in the Europa League game against AZ Alkmaar earlier in the campaign, he was unquestionably the star of the show.

Every time he had the ball at his feet, it felt as if he was going to make something happen, and it wasn’t just us who were left stunned, as teammate James Maddison described him as “fearless” and compared him to Neymar Jr of all people after the game. That certainly suggests he could be in the same bracket as a certain Bale as well.

Ultimately, there is a long way to go for Moore, and the pressure is only going to increase, but from what we have seen so far and with how people are talking about him, we would not be surprised to see him develop into a Bale-esque player for Spurs.

Former Cricket Scotland chair attacks 'fatally flawed' racism report

Tony Brian calls for government enquiry into process that found Scottish cricket to be institutionally racist

ESPNcricinfo staff26-May-2023

Tony Brian was chair of Cricket Scotland between 2015 and 2022•ICC/Sportsfile

The former chair of Cricket Scotland has issued a scathing criticism of last year’s investigation into racism in the sport, calling the report “fatally and irredeemably flawed” and urging the Scottish government to commission an independent enquiry into how it was put together.Tony Brian, who was Cricket Scotland chair between 2015 and 2022, has submitted a document entitled “complaints and whistleblowing disclosures” to SportScotland, the body that oversaw publication of the Changing the Boundaries report in July 2022. His findings have also been copied to Scotland’s first minister and Audit Scotland.Brian claims shortcomings in the report mean that the charge of institutional racism against Cricket Scotland, which led to the board resigning en masse, was not supportable. He has also asked that the governing body be removed from special measures.”We now know that SportScotland’s so-called ‘independent’ report was flawed from its inception and a gross waste of large amounts of public money,” Brian said. “The results of Freedom of Information requests and in-depth analysis of the report and its methodology now show clearly that it was a deeply flawed report with a pre-determined outcome conducted by ill-resourced and conflicted reviewers who failed to undertake proper forensic investigation or even to speak to many relevant individuals.”Related

Cricket Scotland chair Anjan Luthra steps down from role

Scottish cricket continues to deal with fallout from the Changing the Boundaries report, which identified 448 examples of alleged institutional racism and found Cricket Scotland had failed 29 of the 31 tests used to measure the scale of the problem. In March, Brian’s successor as chair, Anjan Luthra, resigned after just six months in the role, citing disagreements with the way SportScotland was looking to run the game. Cricket Scotland has yet to replace Luthra and is currently being run by an interim chief executive appointed last month.Brian’s dossier argues that as well as “up to £1m” in wasted public expenditure on the investigation, Cricket Scotland has missed out on “tens of millions of pounds of potential investment” through the ICC, with the report’s publication halting an application for Scotland to become a Full Member nation, thereby unlocking further funding.Central to Brian’s criticism of the report is the role of Plan4Sport, which was commissioned by SportScotland to carry out the review into Scottish cricket. Plan4Sport is described in the dossier as “a small three-person consultancy operating out of a residential address in Staffordshire”, which had previously worked for SportScotland – and therefore was not fully independent.Ten months on, the 448 instances of discrimination and 31 indicators of institutional racism have not been published. After a Freedom of Information request, SportScotland revealed that it “did not validate or oversee the methodology or findings”.Brian claims that key witnesses were not called for interview, and that evidence of “positive experiences of inclusion” was not given any weight. It is also suggested that Plan4Sport had previously worked with Cricket Scotland on its Equality, Diversity and Inclusion framework, and did not raise any concerns about discrimination. In response, SportScotland issued the following statement: “That people still refuse to accept the findings of Changing The Boundaries is a cause for concern. The denial of racism is a barrier to racial equity and is doing further damage to the sport that so many people in communities across the country love.”The findings of the Changing The Boundaries report were accepted in full by the previous Cricket Scotland Board who apologised multiple times for the racism and discrimination problems within the sport. The governing body is now fully committed to implementing all recommendations contained in the report and we will continue to support them through the rebuilding process.”We have full confidence in how the Changing The Boundaries review was carried out and will not be conducting any further reviews.”
