Spurs wanted to sign £55m star for Ange but ended up with Brennan Johnson

It’s been a hectic start to the season for Tottenham Hotspur this year.

Ange Postecoglou’s side didn’t get off to the best of starts with a draw against Leicester City and losses to Newcastle United and Arsenal, but in the last couple of weeks, things have turned around.

Following their dramatic victory over Coventry City in the League Cup, the North Londoners are now on a four-game win streak, with their most impressive coming on Sunday afternoon as they dismantled a sorry Manchester United team at Old Trafford.

There were several stand-out performers on the day, but one of them, Brennan Johnson, has become the face of the club’s impressive turnaround this month, and interestingly, the club almost signed someone else before they picked him up last summer.

Brennan Johnson's Spurs career

After a stellar campaign with Nottingham Forest in the 22/23 season, in which he scored ten goals and provided three assists in 44 appearances, Spurs spent around £47.5m on Johnson in an exciting deadline day deal last summer.

Brennan Johnson for Tottenham

However, he didn’t get off to the best of starts in North London, and by the time Christmas Day rolled around, the Welshman had a rather paltry haul of three assists and a single goal in 12 league appearances.

Fortunately, things quickly turned around for the Nottingham-born ace, as with more game time came a better level of output, and by the season’s end, he had racked up a reasonable tally of five goals and ten assists in 34 appearances, equating to a goal involvement on average every 2.26 games.

This season has already been full of ups and downs for the 23-year-old. Even though it’s just early October, he endured a slump in form, during which he deactivated his Instagram account, but has now come out the other side as one of the most in-form wingers in the country.

In the last four games, Johnson has found the back of the net in each one and now looks like a real threat every time he has the ball at his feet, which isn’t something that can be said of the player they almost signed before him last summer.

Spurs almost signed Jeremy Doku

Yes, before he made his way to Manchester City, Spurs were one of several English clubs chasing Belgian winger Jeremy Doku last summer.

According to a report from the Independent in mid-August 2023, the Lilywhites were named as one of the Premier League sides very keen on landing the then-21-year-old’s signature, who had just come off a reasonably impressive season for Ligue 1 outfit Stade Rennais, in which he scored seven goals and provided four assists in 35 games.

However, just a week later, City paid a whopping £55.4m for the youngster’s signature, and while he admitted that it was the chance to work under Pep Guardiola that led him to the Etihad, we’d be willing to bet that the inflated price is one of the reasons Daniel Levy and Co stepped away from the deal.

Jeremy Doku

Now, that is not to say that the dynamic “diamond”, as dubbed by Kevin de Bruyne, isn’t a talented player; he obviously is, but considering the £7.9m difference between his price and Johnson’s, it could be argued that the North Londoners got the better deal.

For example, while he had one simply sensational league game against Bournemouth in which he scored once and provided four assists, the Borgerhout-born gem ended his first campaign in England with a haul of six goals and 11 assists in 43 appearances, which equates to an average of a goal involvement every 2.52 games, which is slightly worse than what the Spurs ace could muster.

Moreover, so far this season, there hasn’t been any competition at all, as the 29-capped Belgian has one goal in eight games compared to the Welsh international’s four in eight.

Ultimately, we are sure that Postecoglou would love to have a player like Doku in his squad, but based on Johnson’s form towards the backend of last season and over the last few weeks, we reckon Spurs signed the correct winger.

'I would want to make sure the players' families can get to Australia' – Strauss

“I think it is unrealistic to expect players to go over there for months on end without their family seeing them”

Andrew Miller10-Aug-202118:29

‘It’s a warning shot to sport to take mental health seriously’

Andrew Strauss believes that a compromise can still be reached whereby England’s cricketers will be allowed to bring their families with them on this winter’s Ashes tour of Australia, but says it would be “unrealistic” to expect the players to embark on such an arduous campaign without being able to see their loved ones for months on end.Strauss, who captained England’s last victorious tour of Australia in 2010-11, stopped short of echoing the sentiments of his fellow Ashes-winning captains, Michael Vaughan and Alastair Cook, both of whom have questioned whether the tour can take place in the current circumstances, and instead insisted the onus was on the English and Australian boards to work out a solution with the Australian government.”No, I wouldn’t want a postponement, I would want to make sure that the players’ families can get there,” Strauss said during an event to promote the forthcoming #RedForRuth day at Lord’s. “The last thing anyone wants is players having to make that choice between ‘my family can’t come and therefore I’m not going to go’ or ‘I’m going to go’.”The solution to this is to find some sort of middle ground between the Australian Government, Cricket Australia, and the ECB, to make it as easy as possible for families to get out there and to have as few restrictions as possible when they are over there.”The ECB last week issued a joint statement with the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA), saying it is committed to “putting player and staff welfare as the main priority”, amid concerns about the burden on multi-format players such as Ben Stokes, Mark Wood and Jos Buttler – all of whom are likely to have to travel directly to Australia from the T20 World Cup in the UAE.Related

Pietersen: Four-month Ashes tour without families is "utter madness"

Dom Bess 'would never turn Ashes down'

Australia’s Covid-19 entry and quarantine rules are among the strictest in the world, and when the IPL was postponed earlier this year, Australia’s own players were required to make a stopover in the Maldives rather than fly directly home. Last year a number of English players pulled out of the Big Bash due to concerns around bubble fatigue, and while Dom Bess is one potential tourist to have insisted he would “never, ever turn down” an Ashes call-up, Kevin Pietersen recently expressed the view that the winter’s proposed circumstances were “utter madness”.”Of course we all understand, having been through the pandemic here for the last 18 months, that this stuff isn’t easy,” Strauss added. “[It requires] setting precedent and all that sort of stuff, but I do think it is unrealistic to expect players to go over there for months on end without their family seeing them, especially with what’s gone on over the last 18 months and all the time they’ve had spend away from their families in bubbles.”I think that’s going to be asking them to go one step too far, and some sort of compromise needs to be reached. That’s what everyone should be working towards at the moment, rather than worrying about something that may or may not happen.”More immediately, however, Strauss has less sympathy for the shortcomings of England’s batters in their recent performances against New Zealand and India, in particularly his successors at the top of the order – Dom Sibley, Rory Burns and Zak Crawley – all of whom have struggled for consistent runs of late.”It is a case of ‘must do better’,” Strauss said. “It’s been very tough. You’ve got to go back a long time to see conditions that have been as challenging for opening batsmen. But ultimately, that’s what they’re in the job to do and someone at some stage will grab that opportunity with both hands”We’ve seen instances where Burns, Sibley and Crawley – all three of them – have been able to do it, but as we know, the key to having a long England career is doing it consistently. We haven’t seen that, so that’s a challenge for them.”They’re no different to myself and Alastair Cook and Mike Atherton and Graham Gooch when we started, it’s a huge challenge and you either pass that challenge, or you don’t and someone else gets a go.”Andrew Strauss leads the teams out to mark Ruth Strauss Foundation Day•Getty Images

That someone could yet be Haseeb Hameed, who has been part of England’s Test squad since the New Zealand tour, and could be in line for his first Test appearance since the tour of India in 2016-17, where he impressed as a 19-year-old in three Tests before suffering a broken hand and a subsequent dip in form.”The selectors have always got that challenge around when’s the right time to take someone out of the action,” Strauss added. “That’s often dependent on a hunch or an opinion that the coach might have, around where they are psychologically and how well they’re playing off the pitch, in the nets etc.”I’ve always felt generally it’s better to give one more Test than one too few Tests,” he added. “But I was up [at Trent Bridge] last week and I was looking at Haseeb Hameed in the nets and he looked very impressive. Not that that means anything, as we know, but I’m sure he’ll be chomping at the bit to get an opportunity and if they don’t make the change this week, then I think that top order will know that they’re in the last-chance saloon.”The second day of the Lord’s Test will once again be dedicated to the Ruth Strauss Foundation, which was set up in memory of Strauss’s wife, and mother to his two sons Sam and Luca, who died in December 2018 from a rare form of lung cancer. The ground will turn red to raise awareness of the charity which provides much-needed support for other families faced with the impending loss of a parent, and Strauss said the circumstances of the Covid pandemic was likely to have made their work all the more important.”We were blown away last year by how engaged everyone got with the day virtually,” he said, after the pandemic caused England’s home summer to be played behind closed doors. “But it’s not quite the same when you’re in an empty stadium and the voices are echoing around the ground, so it’s going to be an incredible spectacle this year. We’re just hoping that people remain engaged with the day itself, by wearing red and showing their support for what we’re doing.”We know that this is relevant in so many people’s lives, and maybe even more relevant given what’s been going on over the last 18 months or so,” he added. “We feel like we’re a little bit closer to death, in a way, which is not a nice thing to say but perhaps we are.”Strauss, who stepped down from his role as England Men’s director of cricket in 2018 to focus on his family, has since made a return to the sport, both as a commentator on Sky Sports and as chair of the ECB’s Cricket Committee. However, due to his immersion in the Foundation’s activities, he says he doesn’t envisage himself making a full-time return to cricket administration any time soon.”One of the big learnings I’ve had, without getting too deep, is how important purpose is in life,” Strauss said. “We are all on this earth only a certain period of time and, certainly, as a retired ex-cricketer, where your purpose was very apparent when you’re playing cricket, it’s not necessarily quite so apparent when you finish. The Foundation has given me a real motivation and desire and drive to make that a success, and that helps me every single day, to be honest.”For more information on the Ruth Strauss Foundation, and for details of #RedForRuth day, click here

Everton may appoint interim 4-2-3-1 manager as Friedkin waits for Mourinho

Dan Friedkin is reportedly eyeing a 4-2-3-1 manager to bring in on an interim basis before hiring Jose Mourinho, should Sean Dyche be sacked by Everton.

Everton manager latest

The Blues’ current boss is still battling to save his job at Goodison Park, although four points from the last two Premier League matches at home to Crystal Palace and Newcastle United have undoubtedly eased the pressure on him.

Despite this, constant names continue to emerge as a potential replacement for Dyche, with Mourinho arguably the most high-profile manager mentioned in recent weeks. The Portuguese is currently in charge at Fenerbahce, but the fact that The Friedkin Group had him as boss at Roma means they already know him extremely well.

AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho.

Meanwhile, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has also emerged as a rumoured option for Everton, with the Dutchman currently the manager of Besiktas up against Mourinho in Turkey.

A sensational return for David Moyes has been mooted for the Blues, too, with former Manchester United, Tottenham, Aston Villa and West Ham scout Mick Brown saying the Scot would be “interested” in taking the job. Now, a fresh managerial update has dropped – one that could be intriguing to supporters.

Friedkin eyeing interim manager at Everton

According to The Boot Room, Moyes is now “in line” to become interim manager at Everton, should they decide to part ways with Dyche in the near future. It is said by journalist Graeme Bailey Moyes “would be targeted if Dyche loses his job before the end of the current campaign.”

It is stated that Friedkin is “keen to bring Mourinho back to the Premier League”, but will have to wait to bring him in, meaning Moyes could arrive on a temporary basis to fill in before he arrives.

West Ham United manager David Moyes

Whether Moyes would be happy to take an interim role remains to be seen – he may only want the job permanently or not at all – but it could be a shrewd move by Friedkin.

The 61-year-old did such a fantastic job during his first spell at Goodison, even finishing fourth in the Premier League back in 2004/05, and he has gone on to impress elsewhere, not least winning the UEFA Europa Conference League with West Ham in 2022/23.

The 4-2-3-1-playing Moyes has the know-how to steer Everton away from the relegation zone, and if he knew that he was only in charge until the end of the season, he would be a perfect stop-gap between Dyche and Mourinho.

The latter would be such an eye-catching appointment, given his league title and Champions League triumphs throughout his career, and his aforementioned relationship with The Friedkin Group means that it would also make perfect sense.

This is all assuming that Dyche is relieved of his duties at some point, of course, but there is still a chance that the Englishman will turn things around, especially given the last couple of games. Should results continue to be poor after the international break, however, a short-term Moyes deal would be clever thinking.

Chandrapaul Hemraj ton caps Warriors demolition of Royals

He made a mockery of the Royals first innings total as his 105* helped complete the 131-run chase in 14.2 overs

Guyana Amazon Warriors opening batter Chandrapaul Hemraj scored his maiden T20 ton to cap a nine-wicket demolition of the woeful Barbados Royals. Chasing a target of 131, Hemraj faced 30 of the 36 balls in the powerplay to race to 61, putting a remarkable century within a short chase firmly in the crosshairs. On 99 with the scores level, he managed to pull off the feat with an uppercut for six over backward point.Hemraj brought up his first 50 off 25 balls and made a mockery of the Royals first innings total on a pitch that had seen Faf du Plessis also score a century earlier in the day for St Lucia Kings. Unlike du Plessis and Hemraj though, Royals continued their calamitous start to the season by bumbling through their innings after choosing to bat first. After a relatively sedate start, Imran Tahir unleashed carnage in the fifth over of play by nabbing three wickets: Johnson Charles caught driving to mid-off, Smit Patel first ball lbw misreading a googly, and then capped the over getting Glenn Phillips to chip a leading edge back for a return catch. From there, Royals continued to flounder as four players crossed 20 without passing 30.But Warriors, or more specifically Hemraj, batted as if on a different wicket during the chase. Hemraj and Brandon King plundered 71 from the powerplay and eventually 103 in their opening stand before King fell two balls after drinks playing across the line to Nyeem Young. At that stage, Hemraj needed to score 20 of the final 28 runs required to reach his personal milestone and the only person who threatened to spoil the moment looked to be his teammate at No. 3, Shoaib Malik. When Malik pulled over wide mid-on for a boundary in the 13th, it left Hemraj needing to score 12 of the final 14 runs to get to three figures before the target would be achieved. After another Malik single, the drama intensified when Hemraj struck a boundary to end the over, leaving the former on strike to begin the next frame. Another run Shoaib subtracted from the target got Hemraj back on strike during the 14th. Despite there being no margin for error, Hemraj struck a boundary and a single to end the over on 99. It ensured he’d be on strike at the start of the 15th over as tension continued to build in the smaller scale drama between the wickets after all life had been sucked out of the wider contest much earlier.Hemraj sliced a full toss to short third man off Young to begin the 15th over and set off for a panicky single before being rightly sent back by Shoaib. But all the nervous energy dissipated moments later when Young served up a short ball well outside off that Hemraj leapt off his toes to dispatch over the off side rope, cementing a thrilling individual achievement as well as putting the final nail in the coffin of a lopsided match.

'He wasn't the only one who struggled' – Stephen Fleming on MS Dhoni's sluggish batting

Coach says CSK’s slowdown was due to the challenging conditions, “not lack of intent”

Deivarayan Muthu04-Oct-20213:35

Chopra: ‘Dhoni could’ve showed a bit more intent’

Chennai Super Kings, in their three-wicket defeat to Delhi Capitals, got to 48 for 2 by the end of the powerplay, but then slowed down so much towards the middle that they did not score a single boundary for the next five overs. Ambati Rayudu eventually broke free at the death to end with an unbeaten 55 off 43 balls, but MS Dhoni could not make up for lost time: he dawdled to 18 off 27 balls before edging behind, having hit zero boundaries. This slowdown was not down to lack of intent, coach Stephen Fleming said after the game, pointing out that Dhoni wasn’t the only batter who struggled to get the ball away on a challenging Dubai pitch.”Well, he [Dhoni] wasn’t the only one who struggled,” Fleming said. “It was a difficult day for strokeplay. When 137 [136] is almost enough, I think it was a tough wicket to score big on in terms of the big shots. So both teams struggled with that towards the end of the innings. Sometimes you set your sights too high, [want] too many, and probably we were only 10-15 runs short of having a match-winning score.Watch the IPL on ESPN+

Sign up for ESPN+ and catch all the action from the IPL live in the US. Match highlights of Delhi Capitals vs Chennai Super Kings is available here in English, and here in Hindi (US only).

“So, the difficulty at the moment is to assess what the conditions are in all three different grounds and, batting first, getting a score that is par or just above. It was no lack of intent, it was just we had to stabilise after a couple of mistakes and then we were reasonably well-placed for 150. The other thing was their attack bowled very well in the last five overs. They were very smart, so it was tough going. The result might still have gone Super Kings’ way had substitute K Gowtham hung on to a fairly straightforward chance offered by Shimron Hetmyer at long-on, in the 18th over bowled by Dwayne Bravo. The ball burst through Gowtham’s hands and rolled to the boundary, leaving Capitals needing 18 off 15 balls. Hetmyer went on to usher Capitals home – and to the top spot on the table. Fleming rued his team’s “clumsy mistakes”, but said he would rather face these setbacks now than during the playoffs.”I’d rather have two defeats [Super Kings lost their previous game as well, to Rajasthan Royals] now than in the two semi-finals, if I ever had a wish list,” he said. “Today was good, today was scrappy and I think there were a lot of mistakes on both sides. Sometimes, when you’ve qualified, I know there are one or two [things] that we were trying hard for… and things do change a little bit.”We try to work very hard on keeping the intensity. We’re on the back of three games in five days and a bit of travel, so there were probably clumsy mistakes from us, which was the most disappointing aspect, but in terms of the competition one of the key things is rebounding. Second on the table [with] a chance to get to the top two is still a positive position, but we need to just maintain our intensity or get the flow and rhythm that we had before these two games.”Related

Report – Axar, Hetmyer key drivers in tight win for Capitals

In the previous game he played, against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Bravo came into the attack as early as the seventh over and took 2 for 17 in his four overs, including the prized scalp of Kane Williamson. However, on Monday, that 18th over turned out to be Bravo’s first. Fleming reasoned that Bravo’s particular strengths and the two-paced Dubai track prompted this late introduction.”The pitch was very difficult when the taller fast bowlers hit the back of a length hard,” Fleming said. “There was inconsistency there. Dwayne Bravo is not really a player who bangs the ball into the pitch. His death yorkers and changes of pace are his key weapons. When there are other resources that are making in-ways and creating opportunity, brought us back into the game… Dwayne’s death [bowling] is very effective. I thought the tactics were spot on. Throughout the game the faster bowlers banging it on a back of a length had a good day out. That was our tactic and we did we did it really well.”

91% passing, 6/10 rating: The Wolves star who was even better than Larsen

Wolverhampton Wanderers will consider themselves extremely unfortunate to not at least get one point against Manchester City, after the Citezens scored in the 95th minute to steal all three points, winning the game 2-1.

Jorgen Strand Larsen gave Wolves the lead after just seven minutes, before Josko Gvardiol fired one in from outside the box, to make it 1-1 in the 33rd minute.

City then scored in the last minutes of the game, with John Stones scoring to secure all three points for the away side, as they remain second in the division.

Gary O’Neil’s side have now lost six games in a row in all competitions, five of them being in the Premier League, and the manager could find himself in trouble, with Brighton up next, as Wolves sit rock bottom on one point.

Larsen's performance against Man City

The 24-year-old was the Wolves goalscorer, putting them 1-0 up after just seven minutes. Larsen has now made nine appearances for Wolves this season in all competitions, scoring three goals, and providing two assists.

Larsen scored with his only shot of the game, having just 19 touches, making 4/8 accurate passes (50%), losing all seven of his duels (ground and aerial), and losing possession seven times.

He took his goal well, arriving in the right place, at the right time, to tap it home. However, one of Wolves’ other forwards was more impressive, despite only getting a 6/10 match rating from MolineuxNews.

Matheus Cunha's performance against Man City

Matheus Cunha only played 67 minutes, completing 1/2 successful dribbles, 1/1 crosses, 1/1 long balls, making one key pass, creating one big chance, and winning 4/8 of his ground duels.

The 25-year-old, who was described as “phenomenal” by Max Kilman in January this year, has made nine appearances for Wolves so far this season, scoring three goals in his 637 minutes played so far. This is coming off the back of an impressive 2023/24 campaign, where he made 36 appearances, scoring 14 goals, providing eight assists, and totaling 2,772 minutes played.

It is important to note these players had different roles in the game, Larsen being 6ft 4, his job was to pin the City defenders, look to be a threat in the box, contest aerial duels, and be an outlet.

Cunha, on the other hand, is more involved in all round play, dropping in to help Wolves get out, carrying it forward, looking to create for himself and others, as well as putting in a shift defensively.

Perhaps the decision from O’Neil to take Cunha off after 67 minutes was the wrong one, as he was clearly putting himself about in midfield, winning a fair number of his duels, and then helping the team to get out whether that was with his carrying or passing qualities.
