Leeds express interest to sign 31-cap international who would cost 49ers £0

Leeds United have been linked with a late move to sign a new defender this summer as they look to bolster their ranks this summer.

Farke wants four new faces

With just 11 days until the transfer window slams shut, there is still plenty for Daniel Farke and co to do at Elland Road. Yet to win a game this season despite a sparkling pre-season, they sit 16th in the Championship and have already been knocked out of the EFL Cup at the first hurdle.

They are also losing Georginio Rutter to Brighton after the Seagulls triggered his £40m release clause, with the Frenchman becoming the third high-profile exit from the Yorkshire side this summer following the departures of Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville to Tottenham and West Ham United respectively.

It means that there is something of a sour mood around Elland Road even early in the season, and Farke has already outlined the amount of work his side still have to do in the transfer window.

"We would need cover at full-back, in midfield and two offensive positions. Cannot guarantee we will get all of these, but four is roughly what I would like to see," he explained after his side struggled to a goalless draw with West Brom at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

The club have been linked with both Jack Clarke and Jonathan Rowe this summer, and it remains unclear whether either the Sunderland or Norwich stars will end up at Elland Road to fill one of those attacking positions targeted.

Now, reports suggest that Leeds have identified a potential new addition to solve another one of those issues.

Leeds United express interest in free-agent

That comes with The Daily Mail, relayed by MOT Leeds News, reporting that Leeds and the 49ers Enterprises are eyeing up a move for veteran defender Michael Lang and have expressed their interest.

The Swiss fullback has appeared 31 times for his national side and has racked up over 200 appearances for Basel across two separate spells. Now a free agent, the 33-year-old could be an option to provide cover at right back to Jayden Bogle, who joined the Elland Road outfit this summer.

Given he would cost nothing in terms of a transfer fee, Lang could well be a savvy option to add more depth to the squad, with Bogle currently one of two recognised right-backs among Farke's ranks following the departure of Connor Roberts and Gray this summer.

Having failed to make an appearance for Basel in the last 12 months of his contract though, there will be serious reservations over his ability should he arrive, with the veteran arguably well past his peak, though having scored a Champions League winner against Manchester United back in 2017 might lend him some credit with the Leeds supporters.

As it happened: Queensland vs New South Wales, Sheffield Shield final, 2nd day

Recap how the second day of the final in Brisbane unfolded

All times are local.4.30pm: Full houseThey had to shut the gates on the second day as the ground reached its Covid-19 limit. Great to see.Getty Images

4.00pm: Bonus point standingsDoesn’t look like it will need to be the deciding factor given the time remaining, but we’ve now had 100 overs from both sides so have the bonus points confirmed:Queensland: 1.48
New South Wales 0.3So if it was a draw, Queensland would take the title. Their leading has now extended beyond a hundred. They aren’t in any rush yet. The forecast says a chance of a shower tomorrow but Sunday and Monday look fine.3.00pm: Starc takes one, but more neededMitchell Starc struck shortly after tea when he had Usman Khawaja caught down the leg side, much to the Queensland captain’s frustration. The ball was still new and it was a small opening for New South Wales but, as yet, they have not been able to claim another. Marnus Labuschagne remains rock solid and there is plenty of batting left for Queensland.2.10pm: Tea – Queensland 2 for 211Marnus Labuschagne’s century – his fourth of the Shield season and third against New South Wales – has consolidated Queensland’s position on the second day and they already have a healthy lead with plenty of power to add. It has been another masterful display from Labuschage who has dealt with everything the New South Wales attack has tried. Captain Usman Khawaja has played confidently since arriving at the fall of Bryce Street’s wicket with runs coming at a brisker rate during the afternoon. The new ball became available shortly before the break and it could already be New South Wales’ last chance of staying in the game.”One of the best Shield hundreds you’ll see,” Darren Lehmann says of Labuschagne’s innings on Fox CricketAnd in case you needed it, here’s a reminder of Labuschagne’s Shield season:ESPNcricinfo Ltd

1.15pm: Finally, a breakthroughBryce Street again showed his ability to bat a long time•Getty Images

It has taken a long time, but New South Wales their second wicket with Nathan Lyon ended Bryce Street’s long innings when the left hander edged low to slip having faced 203 balls for his 46. With the new ball due in 10 overs it could give the visitors the lift their desperately need to stay in the game although they have to get past Marnus Labuschagne as he approaches another century. On the atmosphere: “This is the first major crowd I’ve played in front of in a Shield game so walking off to that kind of ovation was pretty cool, pretty awesome, bit annoyed it was only for 46. Even how the crowd were yesterday when we were bowling, walking off at tea, walking off after we bowled them out, it’s goosebumps stuff. On his battle with Starc and Lyon: “We’ve had a running battled, played each other three times and he’s managed to hit me every single game. He’s always good for one and he badged me last game as well. This wicket is really slow so it’s a bit harder for him but he still managed to get it done.”Gaz [Lyon] has always tried to make me talk. There’s nothing I’d love more than to talk to a guy with 400 Test wickets but I don’t want to be dragged out of my comfort zone, stay in my own little bubble, so tried to keep quiet and he got even angrier. Why he laughed when hit from Starc: “The three blows, all in the same spot, was almost like a funny moment and also, I guess, trying not to show you are intimidated a little bit. He was bowling far pace at one moment, and I was like ‘don’t back out, don’t give him an inch, don’t show you are scared.’ “11.30am: Lunch – Queensland 1 for 119Marnus Labuschagne sweeps•Getty Images

Queensland are looking very strong. They have got through the morning session without losing a wicket, although New South Wales will bowl worse and get more rewards. There has been less assistance for the quicks than the first morning but some significant turn for Nathan Lyon. The paltry first-innings total looks like it will be very costly, because batting last on this surface with the spin likely on offer could be very tricky.Bryce Street, given a life on 27, has gone about his business in his own style – he made just 20 runs during the sessions but rate of scoring is now issue for Queensland. They can wear the bowlers down and look to cash in later, something Street is ideal at setting up. Marnus Labuschagne, meanwhile, looks in the mood to go big again. It’s a long way back for New South Wales from here10.30am: Wicketless hourIt hasn’t been without a few alarms, but Queensland have got through the first hour without losing a wicket. Marnus Labuschagne has continued his fine season against New South Wales (well, in fact, most teams) with a 93-ball fifty to follow centuries in the previous two meetings. Bryce Street was dropped on 27 by Kurtis Patterson at second slip off the luckless Nathan Lyon who has bowled beautifully without reward. You still sense that wickets could fall in a cluster, but New South Wales need that to happen sooner rather than later.

10.00am: Labuschagne v LyonIt is proving a terrific contest between two of Australia’s best. Marnus Labuschagne is settling into his work but Nathan Lyon is trying to work him over. Against one delivery Labuschagne opted to pad the ball which brought a loud lbw shout with Lyon then suggesting Labuschagne was one of the best batsmen in the world so should use his bat. He then followed up with a reverse sweep and a conventional sweep. At the other end Josh Hazlewood has been good as well. In the first over the day he found the edge of Bryce Street with a very full delivery but somehow it flew between the keeper and first slip. New South Wales need every chance to go to hand.

9.30am: New South Wales must strike earlyWelcome back to coverage of the Sheffield Shield final. It was all Queensland on the opening day and they are in a very strong position. There is some help in the surface for pace and spin – the turn Nathan Lyon got yesterday evening suggested a chase could be tricky – but New South Wales have to keep any deficit manageable. Bryce Street, who had a lively contest with Mitchell Starc, and Marnus Labuschagne did a very good job to get through to the close and Queensland will have visions of only batting once. That, though, is still a long way off against a strong NSW attack. You can catch up with how the first day played out here.

Luke Fletcher bags six wickets as Essex are bowled out for 99

Steven Mullaney’s unbeaten fifty has Nottinghamshire 89 in front at 188 for 4 in reply

David Hopps06-May-2021

Luke Fletcher claimed six wickets•Getty Images

If you had to nominate a player who exemplifies the beating heart of county cricket, Luke Fletcher would be high up the list. That heart has rarely pumped as merrily as it did against the champions, Essex, as he turned in the most successful shift of his career. It was a grand day for Fletcher, a day when this stalwart Nottinghamshire servant got a bit of a sweat on. Presented by a cloudy day and a green Trent Bridge surface, he bowled with exemplary accuracy and skill, moved the ball both ways in the air and off the pitch and collected six for 24, the first six-for of his career.Conditions were in his favour. According to a “colour expert”, Sage Green harnesses the calming energy inherent in green, but anchors it with earthiness and depth. Not when Fletcher is bowling on it, it doesn’t. By the end of Essex’s innings, Sage Green was not remotely calming. What’s more, it had been combined with Desire, one of the pinker, and lesser-known red tints, but suitably conveying not just Fletcher’s colour as the overs totted up, but his wholehearted commitment to the cause. He rounded things off with a triple-wicket maiden – and came close to a hat-trick in a four-wicket maiden, only to stifle his appeal against the last man, Jamie Porter. As Porter took a while to appear, the Essex dressing room presumably a chaotic picture of discarded pads, Fletcher had chatted contentedly to the umpires, a convivial guy in a largely convivial competition. It is too early to predict a shock result with confidence, but Nottinghamshire, who ended a winless Championship run of 1,043 days last week by thrashing their East Midlands rivals, Derbyshire, are perfectly positioned to follow it up with an even more startling win. They will begin the second day on 188 for 4, a lead of 89, and threaten to throw Group One wide open.Related

James Anderson vs Marnus Labuschagne ends in early knockout blow for the bowler

Until Steven Mullaney (63 not out from 69 balls) and Lyndon James took the initiative for Notts late in the day with an assertive, unbroken partnership of 104, only two batters had played with any authority,Nick Browne’s excellent 53 for Essex, full of solid drives and purposeful shorts of his legs, will gain little attention. Haseeb Hameed’s excellent 49 at the top of Notts’ order brought purrs of pleasure and rightly so because after a horrendous few years, his moving parts appeared to be well oiled again. His chin-length haircut might owe much to lockdown but it feels like a symbol of his move into adulthood. But this is three good weeks after three traumatic years, he is enjoying his cricket and vice captaincy and England should have the resolve to leave him to it for the summer. But back to Fletcher because it is rightly his story. If Notts are the Outlaws then he is surely the epitome of Little John, a formidable figure – 6ft 6ins tall, born in the county, and as loyal to the cause as they come. His great champion, the BBC radio commentator, Dave Bracegirdle, told that nobody has taken more red-ball wickets for Notts this century. Lissom he is not (Fletcher, not Bracegirdle), but he has rarely looked fitter and his stamina is proven; he is one of the county game’s great character cricketers. His first wicket, and the only one he took all morning, was that of the Essex captain, Tom Westley, who was unhinged by a superb delivery that left him to hit off stump. “A dream ball,” Fletcher said – his definition of a dream ball simply being an occasional and deserved reward for doing good things. In the afternoon, Essex lost six wickets for 28 and Fletcher’s share of that was five for 11 in seven overs. He began with Ryan ten Doeschate, swinging one back to have him lbw, and Adam Wheater, strangled down the legside as Fletcher lost control of the swing. Then came three in an over: Browne, who until then had been unperturbed, well caught at deepish backward point as he was drawn into a drive at a swinging delivery; Shane Snater, bowled by another ripper which pitched and left him; and the Australian, Peter Siddle, who nodded that he was ready to receive his first ball then mentally nodded again as he missed it and fell lbw.Fletcher braved the drizzle and falling temperatures, hoodie obscuring his face, to consider his great day. He does not crow on such occasions, has no great ambitions, so he shared that the he had taken confidence from the team win at Derbyshire and had been in good rhythm all season.Far more revealing was the feedback from the outer. The disappointment of Fletcher’s six-for was that it came in an empty stadium, because he is a Fan’s Cricketer. But social media can assuage that to some degree.Chris Nash, a former teammate, messaged in to say that Fletcher was fast becoming his 27th favourite cricketer. “That’s good from him – he played with Bradman,” Fletcher said. Another onlooker suggested that he should be given the Freedom of Nottingham. “That could be dangerous,” he ventured, imagining a beer or two, and ensuring that a day of serious endeavour ended with bursts of laughter.

After Mangala: Everton offered deal to land Garner & Onana hybrid

Today could be a huge day in Everton’s season as they attempt to pull further clear of the relegation zone after their excellent end to last season.

However, they’ve endured a torrid start to the new campaign, with Sean Dyche’s side losing both their opening Premier League outings, failing to score a single goal whilst conceding seven in the process.

Deadline day is always a frantic spectacle, with incomings and outgoings expected across the board, but it’s pivotal that the Toffees make additions that would allow for the club to turn around their woeful start to the new campaign.

The club are targeting various players in numerous positions to provide added quality and depth to Dyche’s squad – with Orel Mangala set to be the latest addition, as he undergoes his medical ahead of a proposed loan move.

He could be joined by one player on Merseyside, with his current side looking to offload the star before tonight’s 11pm deadline.

Everton offered deal to sign Championship star

According to GIVEMESPORT, Everton have been offered the opportunity to sign Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill at a cut-price on deadline day.

Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.

The 28-year-old, who’s also been offered to fellow Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham, could leave Turf Moor, with the Toffees able to sign the ace for just £5m.

Brownhill has enjoyed an excellent start to the 2024/25 campaign under Scott Parker, scoring two goals in his first three Championship games – with his qualities evidently too good for England’s second tier.

He would be a superb addition to Dyche’s squad, potentially reuniting himself with the talented midfielder – allowing the club to land a star who’s a mixture of two talents who have captured the hearts of many at Goodison.

Why Brownhill would be a hybrid of Garner and Onana

Amadou Onana was a fan-favourite during his two-year stint at Everton, excelling with his ball-winning ability at the heart of the club’s midfield.

However, after their recent troubles with PSR, the Belgian had to be sold, joining Aston Villa for £50m – leaving a huge hole in Dyche’s side.

James Garner could therefore be handed the opportunity to stake his claim to be a replacement for the 23-year-old, with the Englishman a fantastic box-to-box option for the Toffees, as demonstrated by his stats last season.

However, the potential signing of Brownhill could allow for the Blue half of Merseyside to sign a player who is an excellent hybrid of the pair – with FBref ranking the Burnley ace as a similar player to the duo based on their stats from last season.

The “fabulous” talent, as described by former professional footballer Lee Hendrie, managed more goals and assists than the aforementioned duo, potentially contributing to aiding the club’s attempts to increase their offensive output.

He also completed more interceptions per 90 than Onana and Garner, whilst making more tackles per 90 than his compatriot – showcasing he has the ability to make an impact at both ends of the pitch.

The rumoured £5m fee for Brownhill’s services would be a phenomenal deal, with the 29-year-old having the ability to transform the club’s midfield.

Whilst he may not provide the presence of Onana, his ability to regain possession and cause a problem in the final third could allow him to follow in the Belgian’s footsteps and be a huge hit at Goodison.

Lancastrians Arron Lilley and Callum Parkinson dealt North Group leaders Yorkshire Vikings a blow as Leicestershire Foxes won by 34 runs to chalk up a third successive Vitality Blast victory.Lilley just missed out on a maiden T20 hundred, but as the Foxes piled up 207 for 3, his 99 not out off 55 balls with four sixes was comfortably a career-best, while Parkinson took 4 for 35 with his left-arm spin.Lilley shared a stand of 90 for the third wicket with Foxes skipper Colin Ackermann (40) on a poor night for the Vikings with the ball and in the field.Chasing 208 to win, Gary Ballance and Harry Brook threatened briefly but after both fell in the 30s no other batter could pick up the pace and the Vikings were bowled out for 173 as Ben Mike took two wickets in the final over.Opting to bat, the Foxes lost Josh Inglis in making 63 for 1 in the Powerplay, the Australian out to a tame return catch off a Joe Root full toss. Soon after reaching halfway at 98 for 1, Leicestershire saw Scott Steel run out for 32 after a mix-up with Lilley, and Ackermann dropped without scoring in the same over, albeit a difficult chance in the air to bowler Dom Bess. 10x possession lost: Slot must drop 6-pass Liverpool dud after Forest loss

Liverpool fell to a shock defeat against Nottingham Forest at Anfield after Callum Hudson-Odoi’s 72nd-minute strike secured all three points for the visitors.

The defeat was the Reds’ first under Arne Slot after the Dutchman took over from Jürgen Klopp during the summer, conceding the first goal this season in the process.

It was a disappointing display for Slot’s side, having over 70% possession and 14 efforts on goal, but were unable to find a way through Nuno Espírito Santo’s side.

Within the side, numerous players failed to make an impact during the outing, failing to replicate the performances produced against the likes of Manchester United, Brentford and Ipswich.

Today was only the fourth league outing of the season, but it did highlight numerous issues that need to be addressed over the coming weeks if they are to have a successful first season during his reign.

Slot’s first test as Liverpool boss

Up to now, it’s all been positive for new boss Slot at the helm, winning all the competitive matches during his start to life at Anfield.

Today was the first time since his appointment that they conceded a goal – an example of how well he’s taken to life in charge of the Merseyside outfit – but it poses a real question for the new boss as to how his side will bounce back from the shock defeat.

His side struggled to break down Forest’s low block, often playing at the intensity needed to drag Espírito Santo’s side out of possession and exploit the spaces in behind.

The Tricky Trees certainly won’t be the last side to go to Anfield and implement such a system, with Slot’s side needing to work on their intensity in possession against such sides if they are to challenge for the title this season.

He certainly wasn’t helped by the number of poor performances produced by multiple first-team members, with one player, in particular, looking poor throughout, with the Dutchman needing to replace him ahead of the club’s next outing.

Why Slot needs to drop Liverpool ace after Forest defeat

The game against Forest was always going to be a tricky one for Liverpool, with Espírito Santo’s side willing to forfeit the ball and sit in a low block and hit them on the counter-attack.

Hudson-Odoi’s goal was an example of the system the visitors implemented, but striker Diogo Jota was unable to make his own impact as a result – struggling in possession when he found space amid the defensive line.

The Portuguese forward featured for 60 minutes during the defeat, having three shots but only placing one on target and missing one big chance in the process.

Jota was also wasteful in finding his teammates, only completing six passes – an average of one every ten minutes – whilst losing possession ten times within his 22 touches over the course of his performance.

Diogo Jota and Arne Slot

The 27-year-old also lost four of the six duels that he entered, often looking lacklustre for Slot’s side, with his performance deserving of him being replaced ahead of the club’s trip to face AC Milan on Tuesday.

Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo were also unable to make their own impact off the bench after being brought on to make a difference, but after Jota’s display, Slot could turn to either of the two aforementioned players to take his spot in midweek.
