Mark Robinson, the former head coach of England women, could be set for a return to cricket, after emerging as a strong candidate for the vacant role of Warwickshire head coach.ESPNcricinfo understands that Robinson, who was head coach when England Women won the World Cup in 2017, has a second interview with the club this week.Mark Ramprakash, Graeme Welch and Donovan Miller, who were among those shortlisted for the role, were not invited back for a second interview. As well as his success with England Women, Robinson was head coach when Sussex won the County Championship in 2005 and 2007, the Friends Provident Trophy in 2006, the T20 competition in 2009 and the Pro 40 League in 2008 and 2009.During this period, he gained a strong reputation, not just for his ability to coax performances from his players but for signing players of previously untapped potential. Jofra Archer and Ollie Robinson (no relation) both joined the club on his watch. He also gained admiration at Sussex and with England for the manner in which he helped Michael Yardy and Sarah Taylor through tough periods in their personal lives.Robinson’s England side also reached the final of the World T20 in November 2018 but, less than a year later, he was sacked after his side were overwhelmed by Australia in the Ashes. He has not held a high-profile role in the game since. The Warwickshire job became available after Jim Troughton was sacked at the end of the 2020 season. The positions of the remainder of the coaching staff – Tony Frost (batting), Welch (bowling) and Ian Westwood (second XI) – are understood to be safe. Paul Farbrace remains as director of cricket. An appointment is expected before Christmas.

Arsenal chiefs believe "sensational" £200,000-per-week ace will quit soon

Arsenal chiefs believe a £200,000-per-week player will quit the north London club this summer, with further departures on the horizon as sporting director Edu Gaspar continues to reshape the squad.

Players who could still leave Arsenal before deadline day

Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares, who both sealed loan moves away from the Emirates Stadium, are two of Arsenal's latest confirmed exits – but many more could follow the duo out.

Tavares sealed an initial loan to Lazio, which will become permanent next summer for around £7.5 million, while Lokonga put pen to paper on a temporary deal at Sevilla – which includes a buy-option set at around £10 million.

Both men join young striker Mika Biereth, who sealed a permanent switch to Sturm Graz for around £4 million. Mohamed Elneny and Cedric Soares also left north London when their contracts expired on June 30, with a few more interesting names tipped to leave as well.

Aaron Ramsdale, Kieran Tierney, Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nkeitah and Emile Smith Rowe have all been linked with high-profile exits too. Nelson is said to have agreed a move to West Ham on personal terms, and the Hammers are pushing to do a deal for him soon.

Meanwhile, reports claim that Arsenal have set a £40 million price tag for Nketiah, amid interest from Marseille in Ligue 1. Tierney is not in Arteta's plans at Arsenal moving forward, and the club are prepared to accept offers for the Scotsman.

There is also the matter of midfielder Thomas Partey. The 31-year-old made just 14 Premier League appearances under Arteta last season, which was largely down to fitness issues, but he's also entered the final year of his contract.

Arsenal risk losing Partey for nothing next summer, which could be something they're willing to do, given just how important he's been in recent years. An experienced figurehead and proven back-up option like the Ghanaian could be invaluable for Arteta, yet Emirates Stadium chiefs could also be tempted to sell if a reasonable bid comes in.

Arsenal expect Thomas Partey to leave this summer

It's been a while since we've had any definitive update on his future at London Colney, but The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey have now provided some clarity on the situation.

The outlet claims Arsenal chiefs expect Partey to leave and are confident he will go, amid rumoured interest from Saudi Arabian and Turkish sides. However, if the club are unable to find a buyer for the £200,000-per-week African, then they would also be happy to keep him in the squad for another season ahead of another Premier League title race with Man City.

Partey has made 115 appearances for the club since joining for £45 million from Atletico Madrid in 2020, with La Liga expert Gerry Armstrong calling him "sensational".

Graham Onions has been appointed as Lancashire’s new bowling coach, after injury forced him into retirement last summer.Onions, who played nine Tests for England between 2009 and 2012, suffered a back injury ahead of the Bob Willis Trophy season and retired in early September following medical advice. He has worked in a coaching capacity with Lancashire’s age-group and academy sides since joining the club ahead of the 2018 season, and continued in that role last year following his retirement.Onions has a level four qualification from the ECB, and joins a coaching set-up that includes Glen Chapple as head coach and Mark Chilton as his assistant. The club have also regularly used Carl Crowe as a spin-bowling consultant in recent seasons.Related

Paul Allott, Lancashire’s director of cricket, said: “Graham is a universally popular and respected figure within the game, and we are delighted he will continue his association with the club. His talent on the field was undoubted, but we were all incredibly impressed with the impact he had in a coaching capacity during the shortened 2020 season, particularly when Glen Chapple was away with England in the early stages.”A number of young bowlers fitted seamlessly into first-class cricket and that is in no small part down to ‘Bunny’, who has worked with them all over the last couple of years. He also holds a level four coaching certificate, the highest level offered by the ECB, and the opportunity to bring a coach on board who can combine that with his extensive level of playing experience does not come around often.”Onions said he was “thrilled” to continue his association with the club and said that he was particularly excited to work with the young seamers breaking into the first team.”The depth of talent in the Lancashire system is immense,” he said. “Seeing players you have worked with progress, improve and ultimately perform for the first XI is as good as any feeling as I had during my playing days. I was lucky to experience that last summer with a few lads in their debut seasons and I hope I can help even more bowlers contribute to success for the Red Rose over the coming years.”

Joe Root excited by pink ball possibilities as England aim to 'exploit' conditions

Tourists hopeful that recent memories of 36 all out will play on Indian minds

George Dobell22-Feb-2021

James Anderson warms up with a pink ball•BCCI

Joe Root believes a seam-orientated third Test could prove to be to England’s advantage and leaves them in “a great position” at the halfway stage of the series. While Root, England’s captain, was adamant the pitch in Ahmedabad would provide assistance to spin bowlers at some stage, he also suggested the fact that the game is a day-night encounter involving a pink ball could prove encouraging for seam bowlers. In the only previous day-night Test played in India, in Kolkata in November 2019, seam bowlers took all but one of the wickets to fall with India’s spinners bowling only seven overs in the match. At the same time, England’s seamers have been pleasantly surprised by the assistance provided by the pink SG in training and know that, in India’s previous pink-ball Test, in Adelaide in December, they were bowled out for 36 in their second innings.Given England’s obvious struggles against spin in the second Test, when they were defeated by more than 300 runs, any suggestion that conditions will favour seam bowling is likely to be seized upon with relief. As a result, England could be persuaded to go into the Test with only one frontline spin bowler and choose to play an extra seamer, instead.Related

Root, at least, believes that while England must be prepared for a further trial by spin, they are relatively well-placed to respond should seam prove to be more effective.”We are 1-1 with a pink-ball game two days away,” Root said. “It’s a great position to be in from our perspective. It’s a very exciting prospect for the group.”Playing against India in the subcontinent you expect the ball to spin and I’m sure at some point it will. But if conditions are more seam-orientated, then the experience of growing up in English conditions should be in our favour. It’s about handling those conditions as best we can and try to exploit them with ball in hand.”If we can exploit that [events in Adelaide] then that’s something we will look to do. But you have to earn the right, make early inroads, build pressure for periods of time and put balls in good areas, challenging defences. That will be our focus; [36 all out] is more for them to worry about, for it to be in the back of their minds.”While the fortunes of the sides in both the first two Tests have appeared to be disproportionately governed by the toss, Root dismissed the idea of abandoning the toss and allowing the visiting captain, in all cricket, to decide whether to bat or bowl.”Everyone deserves home advantage, I do believe that,” Root said. “Wherever you go in the world, it’s going to be difficult and I quite like that. It’s one of the intricacies of Test cricket and makes it such a beautiful game. You’re going to have to have a well-rounded squad of players.”How different Tests in England, Australia and India can be, is what makes it very special. What makes touring the world so interesting is you have those different challenges and, if you want to be successful, you have to have an abundance of skills to manage wherever you go.”In terms of last week, I don’t think it was a brilliant pitch but I don’t think we deserved to win, either. I don’t think the toss determined it. If we’re going to become the No. 1 side in the world, we’re going to have to manage that better.”Chris Woakes bowls in the nets•ECB

Meanwhile, Root underlined his sorrow at appearing to suggest, in the immediate aftermath of the second Test defeat, that Moeen Ali had “chosen” to leave the tour. While the England coach, Chris Silverwood, subsequently clarified the decision making process and the England camp had let it be known that the captain had apologised privately to Moeen, Root, in speaking publically for the first time since the incident, reiterated he considered it “completely my fault”.”I made a complete mistake,” Root said. “That was my bad, I got that completely wrong. It wasn’t a true reflection of what had happened and it left it open to interpretation, which was unfair on Moeen. I was very quick to apologise to him. He shouldn’t have been put in that position, so that’s completely my fault.”Root also confirmed that Chris Woakes, who has been an ever-present on the tour to date, will return to England at the end of the third Test. He insisted, however, this would not be relevant in selection.”It should not be factored in that he is going home,” Root said. “We have to look at how we are best going to win this Test. We will pick the side we think is best to exploit these conditions.”

£16.8 million man agrees to join Chelsea as Boehly seals another signing

A £16.8 million player has agreed to join Chelsea, and they've struck a deal with his club, with Todd Boehly now closing in on a tenth summer signing.

Chelsea undergo busy transfer window and squad overhaul

Tosin Adarabioyo (Fulham), Omari Kellyman (Aston Villa), Renato Veiga (FC Basel), Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Leicester City), Marc Guiu (Barcelona), Caleb Wiley (Atlanta United) and Filip Jorgensen (Villarreal) have been announced as new Chelsea arrivals this summer, with Brazilian teenager Estevao Willian also set to join in 2025.

Aaron Anselmino will complete a move to Chelsea from Boca Juniors as well, after completing his medical at Stamford Bridge this week, making it nine signings in total for new manager Enzo Maresca ahead of his first Premier League season in charge.

However, a lot of the aforementioned players are young and could be deemed as ones for the future, rather than immediate upgrades to Maresca's first team. Only Tosin, Dewsbury-Hall and Jorgensen look likely to go straight into the senior team, so there could still be work to do for co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley.

Most notably, Chelsea appear to be making serious moves for a new forward. The west Londoners are in ongoing talks with Napoli over striker Victor Osimhen, and Romelu Lukaku could be used as a makeweight, with the Belgian already agreeing a three-year contract and pay-cut to work under Antonio Conte again (Ben Jacobs).

Meanwhile, Chelsea have also submitted a concrete bid for Hoffenheim striker Maximilian Beier, who could be an alternative to Osimhen if a deal cannot be done for the Nigerian.

There is also the possibility of adding yet more talent to Chelsea's ever-growing pool of young players with real potential. KRC Genk shot-stopper Mike Penders, who made his Jupiler Pro League debut last weekend in a 0-0 draw with Standard Liege, is the latest gem on their radar.

Reports earlier this week claimed Chelsea were closing in on a deal for Penders, who BlueCo believe could be the next Thibaut Courtois. The 19-year-old, who stands at a lofty 6 foot 7, now appears even closer to a Stamford Bridge move.

Thibaut-Courtois-Chelsea

Penders agrees to join Chelsea as deal reached with Genk

According to HITC, Penders has agreed to join Chelsea and they've reached a deal with Genk. Indeed, the Blues will pay around £16.8 million to get him over the line, and he'll remain on loan at Genk for the 2024/2025 season to aid his development.

With both personal terms and an agreement struck between the clubs, it appears Chelsea are closing in on their tenth capture of the window, with the teenage talent appearing highly-rated by those within the club after the Courtois comparison.

In future seasons, he could well be competing with Jorgensen for the number one spot.
