Wolves must banish fringe player who earns more than Hwang and Cunha

It has been an impressive season for Wolverhampton Wanderers so far in 2023/24. Gary O’Neil’s side were tipped by many to get relegated this season, but have defied all expectations and could well finish in the top half of the Premier League table.

Indeed, it has not been an easy ride for Wolves at times. Firstly, they lost two crucial midfield players during the summer transfer window. Ruben Neves left the club to join Al-Hilal, a then club-record sale of £47m. That departure was followed by Matheus Nunes joining Manchester City on deadline day, who left the club for £53m, breaking the club-record sale set weeks before by Neves.

Former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.

Not only that, O’Neil has to combat injuries to some of his star players. Portuguese winger Pedro Neto is currently sidelined with a hamstring issue, with his second case of injury he has had this season, so far missing 21 games. Matheus Cunha also missed 12 weeks due to a hamstring injury but is now back playing again.

With all that considered, Wolves have done well this season. However, as the transfer window draws nearer, it does leave O’Neil and his side with a big decision regarding a player currently out on loan, set to return to the club in the summer.

Fabio Silva's season in numbers

The player in question here is Portuguese striker Fabio Silva, who is currently on loan at Scottish club Rangers. It has been a tough season at Ibrox for the youngster, who is on his third loan in just two seasons.

The 21-year-old has scored just five goals in 22 appearances for the 55-time winners of the Scottish League. He has only been on loan since January, having played the first half of the season for Wolves, yet has not really had a major impact during his time north of the border.

He is clearly a capable goalscorer, scoring ten goals in just 19 caps for Portugal U21s, although he is yet to bring that form over to his club football, at either Wolves or Rangers.

Fabio Silva

Silva has previously been on two other loan deals, at Anderlecht and PSV last season. In the first half of the season, he scored 11 goals and registered four assists in 32 games in Belgium, whilst his spell in the Netherlands yielded five goals and two assists in 19 games.

Fabio Silva's salary in 2024

With Silva’s current deal at Ibrox set to expire soon, it certainly leaves the Old Gold with a decision about his future this summer. Indeed, given his goalscoring form during both his time at Molineux and on his various moves away, it may well make sense to move him on.

Not only that, he earns a lot of money, more than a lot of players in the Wolves squad. Silva is currently on £80k-per-week, according to FBref. That is more than the likes of Hwang Hee-chan, who earns £70k-per-week, and both Cunha and Neto, who earn £50k-per-week, according to Capology.

In fact, only Pablo Sarabia earns more than the 21-year-old. The Spaniard is the top earner at Wolves, with £90k-per-week, with Nelson Semedo the only player matching his earnings.

Wolves striker Fabio Silva.

Given the large amount of weekly wages spent on Silva, plus his lack of form in front of goal, it could well be the right thing to sell him this summer. However, Wolves will be lucky to recoup much of the £35.6m they spent on the striker. He was, at the time, the club's record signing.

With that being said, it will still be important money off the wage books, and extra funds for O’Neil to spend this summer, as he looks to build on an impressive first season at the helm at Molineux.

Newcastle set to ignore Howe choice with first move for "fantastic" player

As the summer transfer window approaches, Newcastle United have turned their attention towards reinforcements for Eddie Howe, even if it means looking past their manager's reported preference.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies look set to get off to a strong start this summer, with a deal to sign Lloyd Kelly reportedly agreed and a similar deal for fellow free agent Tosin Adarabioyo hopefully lined up. The defensive duo would help put an end to Newcastle's depth problems within their backline, with both Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman out injured.

Their injuries aren't the only ones that Howe has been left to deal with, however, with Nick Pope missing the majority of the season. Forced to fall back on 35-year-old Martin Dubravka, there has been an undeniable drop off in quality despite the goalkeeper's best efforts at times. It is a drop-off that those at St James' Park must put an end to, especially now that Pope is now 32 years old himself.

Howe could ease striker woes by relocating Newcastle's "phenomenal" ace

In need of a long-term solution, reports suggest that Howe wants to bring Aaron Ramsdale to the club to put an end to his Arsenal nightmare and eventually replace Pope. But PIF have another idea.

According to Nacho Sanchis via Sport Witness, PIF and Newcastle have made contact to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia this summer, having sent scouts to watch the goalkeeper as he kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against Rayo Vallecano last weekend.

Whilst going over Howe's head is an interesting decision, Mamardashvili has shown more than enough potential to eventually prove Newcastle chiefs right and hand their manager the long-term solution he needs.

"Fantastic" Mamardashvili is a better option than Ramsdale

Not only is Mamardashvili three years younger than Ramsdale, but after spending the season as Valencia's number one, he is far more primed to step into the starting role at Newcastle. Ramsdale, meanwhile, finds himself at a crossroads that the Magpies may be best served avoiding in this summer's transfer window.

The Valencia shot-stopper has certainly earned plenty of fans this season too, including Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, who described Mamardashvili's season as "fantastic" on X.

Now it is Newcastle who could benefit, as PIF look to ignore Howe's Ramsdale preference in favour of the La Liga star this summer.

England women could follow men into training within weeks

Clare Connor remains hopeful of staging series against India and South Africa behind closed doors this season

Valkerie Baynes21-May-2020England’s women’s squad could return to training within weeks in hopes of playing their international series against India and South Africa behind closed doors this season.Clare Connor, the ECB’s managing director of women’s cricket, said a planned return of elite women’s players was “hopefully just a few weeks away” following the same guidelines as the England men’s squad, which has a group of 18 bowlers returning to individual training programmes at venues around the country on Thursday and Friday, with the batsmen returning to nets on June 1.”The men are back to action in that individualised training environment this week,” Connor told ESPNcricinfo. “They are obviously likely to play international cricket before England women this summer and that’s why they’re up and running first. We’re aiming for in a few weeks’ time, then we’re hopeful of being able to deliver those same sort of protocols in terms of England women’s return.”ALSO READ: England bowlers set to resume training this weekSpeaking during the launch of the ECB’s “Together Through This Test” campaign, highlighting initiatives within the cricket community aimed at helping the nation through the Covid-19 public health crisis, Connor said she was hopeful England women could fulfill their international schedule behind closed doors.Earlier this month, Connor conceded that men’s international fixtures may need to be prioritised ahead of the women’s this season as a result of the pandemic, with the ECB striving to avoid a projected £380 million deficit by meeting broadcast commitments on the more lucrative men’s game. Addressing those demands means trying to cram as many international men’s fixtures as possible into a condensed behind-closed-doors schedule at a finite number of grounds deemed ‘bio-secure’.Natalie Sciver lines up a reverse sweep•Getty Images

“We are making progress all the time in terms of the whole schedule around England men and women and the whole behind-closed-doors project is going really well, working with government and other sports,” Connor said on Thursday. “We’re still hopeful of being able to deliver both England women’s series against India and South Africa later on in the summer.”India women’s tour of England, due to begin on June 25, has already been postponed, but two T20Is and four ODIs against South Africa remain on the calender for September, as planned. That raises the possibility of matches against India being added to those fixtures as part of a tri-series, which would help avert a situation whereby men’s international fixtures are played and the women’s are not.”It’s something we really, really are working very hard to avoid because of the momentum behind the women’s game that we’ve created, the most recent example of that being nearly 90,000 people at the MCG for the T20 World Cup final back in March,” Connor said. “We’re desperately committed to being able to stage international women’s cricket this summer.”ECB managing director of women’s cricket Clare Connor•Getty Images

Similarly, talks are continuing on whether a new regional women’s domestic 50-over competition will go ahead as planned in September after the ECB earlier this week announced that 24 players would be paid a retainer while the awarding of 40 full-time domestic contracts was put on hold for now. The competition and contracts form part of a £20 million investment in women’s and girls cricket by the ECB over the next two years.Connor reiterated that those funds had not been ringfenced, given the dire financial circumstances the sport could find itself in, but she remained optimistic that the investment would be protected.”I don’t think that any organisation right now can absolutely ringfence anything,” she said. “As a sport we are going to lose between £100m and £400m this year. Of all of the investments that we’re making across cricket, I’m getting nothing but assurance that the women’s and girls’ strategy is at the very top of those lists of what needs protecting and that’s really heartening.”The “Together Through This Test” campaign focuses on initiatives in areas such as physical and mental health, children and education, and connecting communities.”We’re acknowledging that in this period, or even in times of normality, sport is so important for the mental health of the nation and in keeping moral high,” Connor said. “The role that sport can play in people’s physical and mental wellbeing must never be underestimated.”For people who are used to being very attached to their community cricket club, it’s probably desperate for some of those people who may be more lonely than others and who aren’t able to benefit from the camaraderie and the team spirit that cricket provides in the community.”

No.1 target: Arsenal eyeing exciting 22-goal Isak & Jesus alternative

After an incredibly intense ten months of football that have seen Arsenal stage last-second comebacks, demolish their nearest rivals, and rack up the most wins they have ever had in the Premier League, it's another second-place finish for the north Londoners.

Mikel Arteta's side have been pretty much perfect for most of the season, but pretty much is not nearly enough when coming up against Pep Guardiola's freakishly resilient Manchester City, and while Arsenal took them to the final day, it's back to the drawing board over the summer.

However, with the Spaniard's team boasting the best defence in the league by five goals, it's clear that the attack must be the focus, and based on recent reports, the Gunners could be about to sign a forward who could replace Gabriel Jesus and make them forget about Alexander Isak.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from the Independent, Arsenal are intent on signing a new striker before the start of pre-season, and there are two names at the top of their list: Isak and Brian Brobbey.

brian-brobbey-ajax-premier-league-everton-transfers

The former has been a target for some time and remains their top choice over the latter, but according to the report, the Gunners believe the chance of Newcastle United selling the Swede this summer is low and, as they do not want to get drawn into a protracted saga, they have earmarked the Ajax ace as their secondary top choice.

A reliable price for the 22-year-old has not been reported at this point, but Football Transfers' Player Valuation Model has claimed he could be worth around €24m, or £21m, which, if true, would represent an absolute bargain, and one the Gunners' should jump on.

The Dutchman may not be a household name like Isak, but he has been in red-hot form this year and could be the perfect Jesus upgrade to boot, and if the price is anywhere close to £21m, Arsenal can't afford to miss out.

How Brobbey compares to Isak and Jesus

So, if Arteta and Edu Gaspar are looking to sign a striker who is going to help them bridge the gap to City next season, the most critical factor is their pure output.

In his 43 games this season, Brobbey has scored a whopping 22 goals and provided 12 assists to boot, giving him an average of a goal involvement every 1.2 games, which would be impressive for any player, let alone for one who turned 22 in February.

In comparison, Jesus has returned eight goals and eight assists in 36 games, giving him an average of 2.2 goal involvements per game, while Isak's 25 goals and two assists in 40 games mean he averaged 1.48 goal involvements per game last season.

So, with it clear that the Amsterdam-born "powerhouse", as described by U23 scout Antonio Mango, comes out ahead for output, how do the trio's underlying numbers compare?

Well, it is once again advantage to the Dutchman as in almost every striker-relevant metric, he comes out on top, including non-penalty expected goals and assists, non-penalty goals, shots on target, goals per shot on target, goal-creating actions and especially aerial duels won, all per 90.

However, he does come out second best to the Gunners' number nine for shot-creating actions and passing accuracy while producing the same number of assists as the 27-year-old per 90.

Interestingly, Newcastle's star striker fails to come out ahead in any of the comparisons, suggesting that while Brobbrey is currently Arsenal's second choice, he should perhaps be their first.

Ultimately, Jesus and Isak are both incredibly talented strikers and the number of goals the latter scores would surely improve Arteta's side.

However, considering the potential price, output, and underlying numbers, the Spaniard should look to Ajax's star striker first this summer.

Graeme Hick among 40 job losses amid Cricket Australia restructuring

The major domestic competitions have escaped cuts but there will be no Australia A tours in the next financial year

Forty staff have been made redundant by Cricket Australia as part of a A$40 million package of savings to reshape the organisation after its leadership admitted the need to reduce costs for greater sustainability in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. While some departments, notably community cricket and commercial, have avoided major staff losses, high performance programs at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane and coaching staff for the national teams have been pared back significantly. The most high-profile casualty is Graeme Hick, the national team batting coach since 2016, a period in which he has hurled down countless balls at Steven Smith, among others. On a painful day for the governing body, just 24 hours after Kevin Roberts was removed as CEO to be replaced by interim Nick Hockley, the CA chairman Earl Eddings confirmed that the major domestic competitions – Sheffield Shield, Marsh Cup, Women’s National Cricket League, BBL and WBBL – will retain their current formats after they had been threatened by cuts.ALSO READ: Kevin Roberts exit as Cricket Australia CEO won’t heal all woundsHowever, the 2nd XI competition and pathway programmes at U-15 and U-17 level have been paused for the next financial year while there will be no Australia A tours or Cricket Australia XI fixtures. It is not clear yet whether other executives will be jettisoned in the wake of Roberts’ resignation, or if any further changes to the management team will be made by the next long-term chief executive.”Where we were maybe three months ago we were looking at more drastic cuts,” Eddings said. “But given the fact we had stood people down allowed us the flexibility to maintain more roles. Certainly in the last couple of weeks we’ve been able to really protect that core part of our business.”Hockley added that while some of the changes made are temporary in relation to the pandemic, others will be permanent as CA adjusts its costs so it can cope with the fluctuations of the four-year cycle of funding that can swing by as much as A$100 million depending on the schedule.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Eddings said that in future, greater cash reserves may need to be held by all sporting organisations in order to prepare for similar sorts of shocks – a pointer to how CA’s cost-base had grown to the point that the 2018-19 summer, including a tour by India, raised a surplus of only A$18 million for the governing body. Similarly, Eddings defended the board’s extremely conservative forecasting to the states and the Australian Cricketers Association, an issue still being haggled over.”I think across all organisations, the risk management scene is critical and who would have predicted a global pandemic like this would hit,” he said. “It will certainly make all organisations go back and look at their assumptions about risk management, including reserves policies. I think over time we’re going to have to reassess that as all good organisations do.ALSO READ: Malcolm Speed: States should hold off Cricket Australia board change for now”I think like any forecast we made three or four months ago that’s subject to review and the review we’ve made to our cost-base has certainly changed, our forecasts back to the states and territories and the ACA are always being upgraded and…I’ve got no doubt we’re optimistic that could be another area we work with the ACA.”In a nod to how the game will be restructured, states and territories will be given “greater autonomy to develop players”, a statement essentially meaning drastic cuts to the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane and there was also reference to “prudently resourced” national men’s and women’s teams. The 40 redundancies at CA take the total job losses across the game since the pandemic struck towards 200 although there are fewer losses at headquarters than had been expected earlier in the crisis due to the improving situation around Covid-19 – it is understood that more than 80 staff may have been departing as recently as two weeks ago.”We’ve been through a number of challenges, but when you lose really good staff like today, it’s really gut-wrenching, and through no fault of their own, there’s a crisis that’s hit everybody,” Eddings said. “To lose 40 really good people is really soul-destroying. So this has been really tough, and saying goodbye to those people is incredibly difficult.”By making these changes it allows us to recommit to community cricket and our high-performance programs. It’s been very important for us to maintain what I call our core products of Sheffield Shield and final, WBBL, the one-day cup.”We had to make some difficult decisions, we had to prioritise some of the programs and pause some, hopefully for no more than 12 months. I really want to apologise to those people, who may be impacted this year. We know how much it means to represent your state and country, and we’ll try to do everything we can to get these programs back online in the foreseeable future.”

O Corinthians quer o Roger Guedes? Sim, o Corinthians quer o Roger Guedes. Qual é a situação hoje?

Caso fique livre no mercado, o atacante deve vestir a camisa alvinegra.

£2.6 million-per-year ace admits he’ll leave Arsenal after internal talks

Arsenal contact club for "exciting" £30 million signing and will open talks

He’s garnering a very good reputation right now.

The likes of Nuno Tavares, Kieran Tierney and Albert Sambi Lokonga, who all spent last season on loan deals away from Arsenal, are the likeliest departees – while both Mohamed Elneny and Cedric Soares are set to leave when their contracts expire on June 30.

The aforementioned don't appear to have a future under manager Mikel Arteta, who is also reportedly very likely to green-light a summer exit for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale after he fell behind David Raya in the goalkeeping pecking order.

"It’s a matter of when Ramsdale leaves, not if," said journalist Charles Watts to CaughtOffside recently.

“The key thing for Arsenal is getting value for money. I saw an initial fee of £15 million mentioned in reports last week and that is quite frankly ridiculous. Arsenal signed Ramsdale for nearly £30m two years ago and he has developed into a far better keeper since then.

Alongside the aforementioned, Thomas Partey, Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira, Reiss Nelson, Emile Smith Rowe and Eddie Nketiah stand out as the other players who could be sold by Arsenal this summer – with rumours suggesting the Gunners are open to offers for them.

Lokonga admits he'll leave Arsenal this summer after talks

Lokonga has now admitted to media he'll leave Arsenal this summer after internal talks with the club. The 24-year-old, on a rumoured £2.6 million-per-year, spent last season on loan at Luton Town – making 17 top flight appearances and bagging three assists.

"Albert is a very intelligent player who has shown great maturity," said the Arsenal manager (via The Mirror).

"He has been coached well by Vincent Kompany and his team at Anderlecht. I know Vincent very well and he talks so highly about Albert and the positive impact he had to Anderlecht in recent seasons.

"We're confident Albert's ready for the next stage in his development and we're looking forward to welcoming a new member to our squad with his quality and presence."
