Arsenal's title chances took a hit on Sunday as they were beaten 2-0 by Aston Villa at The Emirates in the Premier League, when they had the chance to move to the top of the division.

They are now two points behind reigning champions Manchester City, with six games left to play, and are now in danger of another season without any silverware to show for their domestic efforts.

Despite there being plenty of football left in both the Premier League and the Champions League, Edu and Mikel Arteta are already looking at transfer targets to bolster the squad.

The upcoming summer transfer window provides them with another opportunity to add more quality to the group, and they reportedly have their eye on a current top-flight star.

Arsenal's interest in Premier League attacking midfielder

According to The Mirror, Arsenal are one of the teams interested in a possible swoop to sign Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The report claims that the Gunners admire the England U21 international and will have to battle it out with Premier League rivals Newcastle United to secure his signature. Eddie Howe's side have made the attacking midfielder, who is said to be valued at £50m, one of their main transfer targets for the summer as they prepare to potentially lose Brazil international Bruno Guimaraes.

The outlet states, however, that Arsenal number ten Emile Smith-Rowe is also on Newcastle's radar, alongside Leicester City's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

This means that the Gunners could, in theory, sell Smith-Rowe to the Magpies in order to clear the path for them to swoop in for Gibbs-White, should they decide that they want to go down that particular route.

Why Arsenal should sign Morgan Gibbs-White

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers starlet has been in impressive form in the Premier League so far this season, despite playing for a Forest team battling against relegation from the division.

He has stood out with his performances in the middle of the park, after a return of five goals and eight assists in 37 league games last season, as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

As you can see in the table above, Gibbs-White has provided more assists than Martin Odegaard in the Premier League this season, although the Norway international has created two more 'big chances'. The Forest star's numbers, in terms of both goals and assists, are not too dissimilar from the Gunners captain's, which speaks to how impressive the Englishman has been.

Gibbs-White, who has been described as "underrated" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, could be a fantastic alternative to rotate with the skipper when needed. This could help Arsenal to compete on all fronts next season, in order to have more success in domestic and European competitions, without overplaying Odegaard and causing fatigue towards the end of the campaign.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is planning to stick with Ten Hag until at least the end of the season, however, the new co-owner appears to have his eyes on a new long-term boss after the way United surrendered a three-goal lead in Sunday’s narrow FA Cup semi-final victory over Championship side Coventry City.

Since then, reliable reporter Christian Falk has added that Tuchel would be “very interested” in taking over in Manchester, looking for a new challenge ahead of the 2024/25 season.

It looks as if he’ll be leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season after failing to win the Bundesliga title, however, these claims over a move to Old Trafford may be slightly premature.

Romano makes Tuchel to Man Utd claim

However, despite numerous claims of Tuchel possibly moving to Man Utd, Romano, writing in his CaughtOffside column, relayed by Football Talk, said that there is nothing with Tuchel and the Red Devils at this moment in time.

“We’re waiting for Manchester United to decide the future of Erik ten Hag at the end of the season – this is going to be one to watch for sure. Still, despite rumours about Ten Hag’s future and about Thomas Tuchel possibly being the club’s preferred replacement, I’m not aware of anything else with other managers now.

“There’s nothing with Tuchel yet, so far. There have also not been any contacts between Tuchel and Bayern to continue at the club and change his mind about leaving this summer; what happens in the next weeks I don’t know, but so far they haven’t discussed the possibility to change his mind and keep him.”

Tuchel will currently have his mind on aiming to win his second Champions League title, with Bayern Munich set to take on Real Madrid in the semi-finals after missing out on the league title to Bayer Leverkusen.

The teams were set to play three ODIs and three T20Is during the tour, with results from the former counting towards points in the ICC’s new one-day league.”It is very sad that we have been forced to take this step and we will re-schedule the tour as soon as cricket returns to a sense of normality and our international fixture list allows,” Cricket South Africa acting chief executive Jacques Faul said in a statement.”Our Proteas would not have been able to prepare properly taking our own lockdown situation into account and, more importantly, health considerations for our players, which are always paramount, were the over-riding factor.”Graeme Smith, CSA’s director of cricket, had also earlier indicated that players would need six weeks of preparation time before embarking on a tour, given the ongoing global lockdowns.South Africa’s next assignment is a two-Test, five T20I tour to West Indies in July-August. A decision on that tour is expected mid-May.The inaugural ODI league was due to run from May 2020 to March 2022, featuring the 12 Test-playing teams and Netherlands – the 13th ranked ODI side, which qualified for the league from the World Cricket League Championship.
