Defeat doesn't negate Bangladesh's progress – Mushfiqur

The wicketkeeper-batsman also said that Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah struggling for form meant there was greater pressure on the remaining players

Mushfiqur Rahim said that while defeat against Sri Lanka in Bangladesh’s ongoing ODI series was disappointing, it didn’t mean that the progress Bangladesh had made in the past few years amounted to nothing. Bangladesh lost the second ODI, giving Sri Lanka an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The loss comes on the back of a World Cup campaign that fizzled out after promising much at the start, with Bangladesh eventually finishing eighth on the table.Against Sri Lanka on Monday, the visiting team were in deep strife at 117 for 6, but Mushfiqur’s unbeaten 98 steered them to a competitive 238 for 8. Mushfiqur was a study in patience as he held back his shots for a long time, ensuring there was no collapse.”It is always disappointing to lose, no matter how many runs I score individually,” Mushfiqur said. “After our World Cup campaign, this series was an opportunity to prove that we are on the right path. Maybe we haven’t been able to do in the last two matches but that doesn’t mean our progress from the last five to seven years will vanish suddenly. We are certainly going through a struggling period, so the challenge is to turn it around quickly. We are all trying our best to make it happen. We have another opportunity in the next match.”Mushfiqur didn’t regret missing out on a century, though if his final-over plan of farming the strike and going big had worked, he might well have done so.”I was trying to get the team to the 250-mark, which wouldn’t have been easy to chase,” he said. “I was trying to keep strike in the last over so that I can retain strike with twos, fours or sixes. Ultimately it is not a problem [to not get to a hundred]. Our focus is to win the next game, because it is a matter of pride.”Mushfiqur agreed that the senior duo of Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah being out of form – their struggles have coincided with Bangladesh losing their last four ODIs – meant greater pressure on the other players. “Tamim and Riyad bhai have been performing for years but when they are not clicking, the pressure is a little more on the other players. Big players can soak up the pressure in big games, and counter-attack,” he said. “I think we are a little behind in that regard, but they are trying heart and soul. The quicker they can come back, it will be better for the team.”

The Arsenal star who Arteta let go on a free & is now outperforming Saka

If Arsenal's statement win over Liverpool earlier this month wasn't enough to convince fans and pundits that they were back in the Premier League title race, their emphatic 6-0 drubbing of West Ham United on Sunday must have.

Mikel Arteta's side knew that rivals would be watching and hoping they would slip up after the exuberant celebrations of the previous match, but a first half that saw them score four goals put to bed any danger of that happening.

The second half brought two more goals – including a sensational Declan Rice strike – and rounded off the club's biggest Premier League away win ever.

As he was against the Reds, Bukayo Saka once again ended the game on the scoresheet and looked to be on his way back to his best.

However, another attacker in Europe, once a fan favourite in N5, is outscoring the Hale End gem this season.

How Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fared at Arsenal

The player in question is none other than former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who, in his four years at the club, made a massive impact for both the right and sometimes the wrong reasons.

The Gabon international signed for the Gunners in January 2018 from Borussia Dortmund for a then-club record fee of around £60m and hit the ground running, scoring against Everton on his Premier League debut.

He ended that season with ten goals and four assists for the Gunners, and while that was impressive, his return of 31 goals and eight assists in 51 appearances the following campaign was simply unbelievable.

The following year saw the arrival of Arteta, but that didn't stop the goals – at this point anyway – and the former Saint-Étienne ace found the back of the net on 29 occasions in 44 appearances, including a brace in the FA Cup Semi-Final and Final – although his dropping of the trophy now reads as an omen of what was to come.

At this point in his Arsenal career, the then-31-year-old was an unequivocal success, and so, somewhat understandably, the club offered him a bumper new contract worth around £250,000k-a-week, which many see as the beginning of the end for his time at the Emirates.

The 2020/21 season saw a paltry return of just 15 goals and four assists from 39 appearances, which fell to just seven goals and two assists in 15 the following year before he was unceremoniously shipped off to Barcelona.

His poor form, discipline, and runs-ins with Arteta – the Spaniard stripped him of the captaincy – made his place in the squad untenable. So, a player who once looked destined to become a "legend", and was described as such by Saka, left out the back door and under a cloud of controversy.

How Aubameyang got on after Arsenal

Now, most English fans will think of his disastrous spell at Chelsea when contemplating Aubameyang post-Arsenal, but that is not entirely fair.

After all, in his short time with Barcelona, he scored 13 goals and provided one assist in just 24 appearances before he made the terrible decision to head back to London.

In his 21 games for the Blues, Auba scored just three goals and provided a single assist, and when your most memorable moments include your former teammates celebrating in your face and your former fans booing your every move, you know it's been a bad season.

However, while a lot of players in their mid-30s might have called it quits after such a cataclysmically bad season or taken the money from somewhere like the Saudi Pro League, the Laval-born poacher opted to back himself, returned to France and signed for Olympique Marseille.

So, with 30 appearances under his belt for the French giants, was it a good move?

Without a shadow of a doubt, opting to remain in Europe last summer was the right decision by Aubameyang as he racked up 14 goals, provided seven assists on the French Riviera, and saved his reputation at the same time.

In fact, his current goal output is better than every Arsenal player this season, including Saka, and he has just two fewer goal involvements than Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus combined.

Ultimately, the Gunners have an exciting young attack that will inevitably improve as the seasons pass.

Arsenal struck gold on £27m signing who's now worth more than Caicedo

The tenacious Gooner is finally getting the plaudits he deserves.

However, Arteta must sometimes wonder whether he'd currently be better off with Aubameyang still in the squad, especially with 14 goals to his name this season.

D'Arcy Short makes short work of Leicestershire in dominant win

Home side ease over the line to record their third win in five games in the competition

Durham 143 for 2 (Short 70, Clark 59*) beat Leicestershire 142 for 7 (Ackermann 52) by eight wickets. An onslaught from D’Arcy Short guided Durham to a dominant eight-wicket victory over Leicestershire Foxes in their Vitality Blast North Group clash at Emirates Riverside.Short was relentless in his innings, blasting the Foxes bowlers to all parts of the ground before he fell for a brilliant knock of 70. He and Graham Clark refused to let the visitors settle in their opening stand of 118. It allowed the home side ease over the line and record their third win in five games in the competition.Colin Ackermann had earlier made a half-century for the Foxes, but his side struggled to time the ball and their total of 142 for 7 was never going to be enough once Short found his stride. Leicestershire slumped to their fourth defeat in the Blast and will require a special effort in their remaining matches to have any hope of reaching the knockout stages. The Foxes made a bright start to their innings and were able to put the Durham seamers on the back foot. Harry Swindells displayed aggression in the powerplay, finding the boundary four times as well as dispatching Brydon Carse over the rope. Swindells was looking well set at the crease, but was run out on 29 by Peter Handscomb after setting off slowly for a single.Leicestershire began to get bogged down by the accuracy of Short and Liam Trevaskis’ left-arm spin. Mark Cosgrove attempted to pull Short to the boundary, but was caught short of the fence by Handscomb. Arron Lilly then became Short’s second victim, mis-timing a strike to the legside and was snagged by Jack Burnham for only 10. The collapse continued when Trevaskis bowled Lewis Hill on the charge to leave the visitors with work ahead them four down for 74 at the halfway stage.Ackermann provided much needed impetus to the Leicestershire innings, sweeping Short to the fence for back-to-back boundaries in the Aussie’s final over. Durham continued to make inroads when Harry Dearden chipped a Carse delivery to Graham Clark, who took a good catch over his shoulder. The Foxes skipper kept his side on course for a decent total, reaching his half-century from 39 deliveries. However, Ackermann fell in the final over to Matty Potts off a blinding catch from Handscomb diving to his left in the deep. The wicket prevented Leicestershire reaching the 150-run mark, posting a total of 142 from their 20 overs.Durham’s reply began with a solid start from Short and Clark, with the latter being dropped on six by Lilley at deep backward square leg. Short then took the lead in the partnership, freeing his arms by blasting Will Davis over the top for the first six of the innings. The Aussie upped the ante, dispatching Gavin Griffiths for four consecutive boundaries to push the run rate beyond 11 runs per over. Short reached his half-century from 26 deliveries, with his tenth boundary of the innings, leaving Durham in a dominant position at the end of the powerplay.Clark maintained the pressure on the Leicestershire bowlers, supporting his partner at the other end, with a six of his own over the head of Davis into the stand. Short fell going for big strike to many, missing a straight delivery from Callum Parkinson. Clark kept the momentum going and scored his first Blast fifty of the term. Although Ben Raine was dismissed cheaply, Durham cantered over the line with 32 balls remaining.

Wolves’ "frustrating" Nuno signing is now worth £25m less

Wolverhampton Wanderers have enjoyed a decent start to 2024 and Gary O’Neil will be aiming for a top-half finish in the Premier League.

The Old Gold have defeated Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea (twice) in the top flight this term, being spured on by the likes of Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-Chan, who have scored 22 goals between them this season.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil.

It finally looks as though the club have reliable attacking options to depend on and these performances from the duo during 2023/24 will ensure their market value increases rapidly.

One player who has decreased in value over the previous few years is Nelson Semedo, as the former Barcelona defender has failed to really shine during his spell in the Midlands.

Nelson Semedo’s market value at Wolves

The Portuguese right-back joined Wolves from the La Liga giants in 2020 for a transfer fee of £37m, and it looked like a key signing for then-boss Nuno Espirito Santo, especially as he had made over 100 appearances for Barcelona, winning two top-flight titles.

The defender has so far failed to live up to these lofty heights during his spell at Molineux, however, and according to Football Transfers, his current market value is just €13.8m (£12m), meaning he is now worth £25m less than the fee they shelled out on him three and a half years ago.

Why Nelson Semedo’s value has decreased

The former Benfica defender has made a grand total of 130 appearances for the Old Gold since 2020, but has managed to score just three goals and register five assists, poor numbers for a player who has been regularly utilised as a right-wing back and even as a midfielder on certain occasions.

Nelson Semedo

When compared to his positional peers over the previous 12 months in Europe’s top five leagues, Semedo fails to rank in the top 30% for progressive carries, progressive passes and touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 and this indicates he has been poor in an attacking sense.

He even fails to rank in the top 25% for certain defensive metrics, including interceptions, blocks, and tackles per 90, while ranking outside the top 50% for aerial duels per 90. Once again, evidence that he is failing to contribute effectively.

The £80k-per-week defender certainly looks as though he is on the decline at the highest level and with a contract that does not expire until 2025, O’Neil may be best looking to move him on this summer in an attempt to recoup a transfer fee.

Nelson Semedo for Wolves

Journalist Nathan Judah dubbed him “frustrating” during the 2022/23 season, and it is clear O’Neil needs to look for different options to operate on the right side of the defence.

Splashing £37m on a defender for a club like Wolves is always going to be a gamble, but Semedo has failed to live up to this lavish fee throughout his time in the Premier League and this could certainly be his final few months at Molineux.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

It is evident that the club – and Nuno – had a mare on the 30-year-old and there is no way they will manage to recoup anywhere near the money they spent on him.

Crystal Palace struck gold with “superb” gem who’s now worth 650% more

In recent years, Crystal Palace have developed an excellent transfer strategy that allows them to pick up bargains every window.

However, they have also proven to be successful at developing those talents into top players, which will now be the task of new boss Oliver Glasner.

Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze are two examples of their brilliant recruitment, and they are hoping Daniel Munoz and Adam Wharton will continue this run.

That said, there’s one player that stands out who has seen their market value increase since joining the club.

What Palace paid for Michael Olise

Prior to his move to Palace, Michael Olise was playing his football for Reading in the Championship, the club he made his professional debut at, which was in a 3-0 defeat to Leeds United in 2019.

However, it would be two seasons later that he really started to show his class and immense quality, as over his first two campaigns, the winger made 23 appearances in the second division, picking up just one assist.

That said, during the 2020/21 he announced himself as one of the most exciting talents in England, boasting an incredible record of seven goals and 12 assists in 37 starts, playing as both an attacking midfielder and a winger.

The following summer, Patrick Vieira decided to splash £8m on the left-footed ace, in what has proved to be one of the best steals in recent Premier League history.

Michael Olise’s market value in 2024

Since arriving at the Eagles, Olise has continued to develop as a player, and despite the step up to the Premier League often being overwhelming, the now-22-year-old wasn’t fazed one bit.

The number seven had his minutes managed in the first season, starting just 12 games but playing 26 matches in the league, with a record of two goals and five assists.

Last season, his creativity really began to flourish, as he picked up 11 assists and played in all but one game in the top flight. Unfortunately, injuries have ruined this campaign for Olise, missing 13 games, but he’s started to develop his goal-scoring ability, netting six goals and providing three assists in just eight starts.

One game this season that sums up what Olise’s all about was against Brentford at home when the Eagles won 3-1, and the table below highlights why he’s now valued 650% more than what he cost the club, with recent reports indicating that he could fetch a fee of roughly £60m this summer.

The fact that Olise has added goals to his game now makes him “superb,” as per Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, while also putting him among the elite wingers who can both create and find the back of the net themselves.

The France U21 gem can also be a threat via his dribbling or his passing, which makes him extremely unpredictable and difficult to stop. His work rate is also unbelievable, and he is willing to get stuck in for his side, which just makes him even more valuable.

Michael Olise

The signing of Olise will go down as one of the bargains of the past decade, especially if he continues to live up to his potential, and Palace will hope that they can unearth plenty more Olise-like talents in the future.

Mithali Raj makes herself available for home T20Is against South Africa

However, it is unclear whether the team still needs the senior batsman with the focus firmly on the T20 World Cup six months away

Mithali Raj drives through cover•BCCI

Mithali Raj remains committed to playing T20Is for India, making herself available for the home series against South Africa in September. However, it is unclear whether the team still has space for the 36-year-old batsman.Mithali was at the centre of a great deal of controversy at the last T20 World Cup, where she claimed she was unfairly excluded from the XI for the semi-final, which India lost. India’s coach at the time, Ramesh Powar, had said that she had gone as far as to threaten retirement if she wasn’t allowed to open the innings.Things, however, did calm down with time and she was picked for each of India’s last two T20I series, against New Zealand and England. But there is increased focus on her role now with the team looking to groom players for the next T20 World Cup, which is six months from now.”I am definitely available for the T20 series next month but, at the moment, haven’t really thought about the T20 World Cup. I usually take it series by series,” Mithali told when asked about her plans for the shortest format. The selectors are set to meet in Mumbai on September 5 to pick India’s squad to play South Africa. That series, in Surat, will be followed by three ODIs in Baroda.Harmanpreet Kaur led the team to the semi-final of the T20 World Cup last year. But since losing that game to England, India have hit a slump, losing each of their last six games.”As a team, we still have a lot to catch up on the T20 format,” Mithali said, “But we do have youngsters coming in and with the exposure of T20 leagues around the world they will get more experience and mature faster.”Genetically we can’t be like other teams [and power hit to victory] but we can be more smart in our planning and shot selection. We worked very hard on our fitness in the recent camp in Bangalore and you can see the girls are much fitter on the ground and that reflects in their drills.”
