Spurs let ‘genius’ talent who was better than Bale leave for £0

2023 spelt the year in which Tottenham Hotspur legend Gareth Bale called time on his illustrious and glittering playing career, with the Welshman bowing out following a short stint with MLS side LAFC after leaving Real Madrid last year.

For many, it seems like only yesterday that the wing wizard announced himself to the wider world with that display away to Inter Milan in the Champions League, with the former Southampton man ripping a helpless Maicon to shreds as an indication of his devastating physical prowess.

While the forward's latter years were somewhat plagued by injury amid what proved to be an ultimately toxic time in the Spanish capital, in north London there is nothing but love for a player who scored 71 goals in 231 games in all competitions for the club across two spells.

For all the brilliance of Bale's time at N17, however, it could be argued that the Lilywhites once had a player on their books who was perhaps an even bigger talent than the 34-year-old in his pomp in the form of footballing icon, David Beckham – only to have let the Englishman slip through their fingers.

Why did Tottenham let David Beckham go?

There may well be some parallel universe where the former England captain rose up through the youth ranks and became a leading figure at White Hart Lane, rather than going on to enjoy stunning success for Premier League rivals, Manchester United.

While it may be difficult to imagine such is Beckham's close ties to the Red Devils' academy ranks – having been a part of the famed 'Class of '92' alongside the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes – the now-retired hero did begin life at Spurs, having been part of the club's school of excellence.

As a London-born asset with a grandfather who was a die-hard Tottenham fan, it looked as if the promising winger was destined to be a fixture of the club for years to come, only for the temptation of joining his own boyhood club – United – to prove too great.

The creative ace was snapped up by Alex Ferguson and co during his mid-teens after four years with the Lilywhites, with it likely set to sting that the club will have received nothing for a player that went on to become such a global superstar before too long.

How many goals did David Beckham score for Manchester United?

After joining the Old Trafford outfit in the summer of 1991, Beckham was then part of the side that claimed FA Youth Cup glory a year later, setting the tone for the success that he would ultimately enjoy as part of the first-team ranks in Manchester.

Following a brief stint out on loan at Preston North End in 1995, the Englishman went on to make his Premier League debut later that same year – with that senior bow coming just four years on from his departure from White Hart Lane.

With 'Fergie' putting his faith in Beckham, Scholes and the like for the following campaign – as senior pros Paul Ince, Andrei Kanchelskis and Mark Hughes were shown the door – United remarkably went on to win the league, the first of six that the wideman would win during his time at the club.

Much like Bale, it was one game in particular that appeared to propel the dazzling talent into the spotlight as he netted from the halfway line against Wimbledon in 1996, with that part of an overall tally of 85 goals in 394 games across all fronts for the Red Devils.

How good was David Beckham?

Despite all the achievements and accolades that he achieved during his stellar career, it is perhaps somewhat overlooked just how much of a sensation Beckham – who did train with Spurs in 2011 amid talk of a short-term deal – was on the pitch, as well as being one off of it.

Lauded as a "genius" by ex-Leeds United boss Sam Allardyce, the 48-year-old was particularly integral to United's treble success during the 1998/99 season, with that coming off the back of a disastrous tournament at the World Cup in which the midfielder sparked fury across the nation following his red card in the round of 16 defeat to Argentina.

That rash kick-out at Diego Simeone saw Beckham become public enemy number one, although he showcased his courageous mental resilience to bounce back with a remarkable season both on an individual and collective basis, as Ferguson's men swept all before them.

As The Independent's Lawrence Ostlere noted, 'the recurring image of United’s 98-99 season is David Beckham’s right foot literally bending the ball to his will', as he regularly stepped up as the man for the big occasion with nine goals and 20 assists in 55 games in all competitions.

Of course, Bale enjoyed his own standout moments in a Tottenham shirt – including his hat-trick away at San Siro – although he was never able to help drag the club to major silverware – aside from the 2008 League Cup – even in a side that contained the likes of Luka Modric and Rafael Van der Vaart.

As for his Madrid career, Bale did memorably net twice in the Champions League final in 2018 and once in the 2014 European showpiece prior to that, although it is arguably Beckham who is more fondly remembered by those of a Los Blancos persuasion.

One major benefit that the latter man possessed over the Welshman was his creative flair as he racked up 80 assists in 265 Premier League games in total, while Bale, by contrast, racked up just 22 assists from his 166 outings in the competition.

Beckham also boasts a superior goal tally (65 v 53) in England's top-flight – albeit from far more appearances – while his majestic 'genius' was also evident as he still leads the way for the most free-kick goals scored in the competition with 18, 15 more than the Cardiff native.

While judging players from different eras is a difficult task, Beckham's glittering haul of honours and impact on the game as a whole could ensure that he may have proven an even bigger success than Bale at Spurs, had the club not seen him move on elsewhere.

Australia, England, New Zealand tri-series in television split

The tournament is split across free-to-air and pay television broadcasters, highlighting Australian cricket’s wide open broadcast rights future

Australian cricket’s wide open broadcast rights future will be underlined when the Twenty20 triangular series is split across free-to-air and pay television broadcasters because its conception took place after the soon-to-expire current deals were inked in 2013.While Channel Nine will air the first three matches of the tournament between Australia, England and New Zealand in Sydney, Hobart and Melbourne, Fox Sports will be the only network airing the remaining matches on the other side of the Tasman, including the tournament final at Eden Park in Auckland on February 21.Viewers in Britain will also face a somewhat disjointed broadcast arrangement, with BT Sport to air the matches in Australia and Sky Sports to take over for the New Zealand leg. This reflects the deal struck by BT last year to air all televised cricket played in Australia, whereas Sky retain the rights to matches played in New Zealand.Fox Sports’ broadcast of the pointy end of the series beginning in Australia may be part of a pre-existing deal, but it is a harbinger of the future, as the subscription television carrier is likely to be a key player in the next round of broadcast deals as both Nine and Ten look to retain cricket’s popular place on their networks while also trying to find ways to balance the growing cost of the rights. Official meetings with interested parties are set to begin this week after plenty of less formal discussions in the corporate hospitality areas of Ashes and Big Bash League venues over the past two months.Five years ago Cricket Australia, led by their general manager for media rights Stephanie Beltrame, was able to generate genuine competition for the rights to the game for the first time since Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket breakaway. Ten, then desperate for high rating content after a string of failed shows, put in a A$500 million bid for the rights, forcing Nine to match that figure including a commitment to fund CA’s nascent digital arm to the tune of A$40 million.Ten then took the rights to the then unknown quantity of the Big Bash League for A$20 million a season over five years, a figure that is now seen as a huge win for the network, which was recently refinanced by the American broadcasting giant CBS. Conservative estimates for the BBL and WBBL have the tournament doubling in season-by-season value, with the prospect of more games being added to the calendar and more made of the finals series.Getty Images

However, both networks are thought to be looking for ways to balance the value of the rights with their mounting cost, with Fox Sports looming as a likely option to add financial heft to the deals. At the same time the pay TV operator is eager for cricket, having lost a significant part of its summer programming when CA awarded the BBL to Ten without giving Fox Sports the opportunity to bid – so important did the governing body deem the goal of free-to-air audiences for the tournament.Though some analysts have suggested that Fox Sports would require a significant exclusive component of cricket to sign on, the network would also find the ability to sell any simulcast matches on an “ads free” basis, as it does for events such as Australia’s home rugby union internationals and major AFL fixtures. At the same time CA would be hesitant to place too much of the game behind a paywall, mindful of how cricket’s English audience has shrunk over the past 13 seasons, irrespective of the rich bounty paid for the UK domestic cricket rights by Sky.James Sutherland, the CA chief executive, has said that any future deal with Fox Sports would have to suit the wider interests of the game. “They’ve always been heavily involved in cricket, but they’ve invested in overseas cricket more so than domestic cricket,” Sutherland had said earlier this month. “They started the BBL the first two years, they’ve supported our domestic one day competition and did a very good job when they were partners there.”The question mark now is how much do they want, what do they want and what are they interested in. While we understand they may be interested, it is then a matter of how that fits with everything else. Clearly the observation I’d make right now is that cricket’s blessed to have all of our valuable content on free-to-air television and two partners in Nine and Ten who do it in their own special way and both attract huge audiences and are extremely professional and care a lot about their production of cricket.”We’re in a really good position, hopefully the product is still sought after by them and others as well.”

Everton transfer news: Demarai Gray’s situation gets even weirder

Everton turned down a deadline day offer for Demarai Gray, as a new report reveals the latest twist in the bizarre situation unfolding around the Blues winger.

How much did Demarai Gray cost Everton?

Back in 2021, Gray arrived on Merseyside from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported €2m (£1.7m), but with his contract expiring in less than a year, he was heavily linked with an exit during the recent transfer window to ensure that he doesn’t leave as a free agent next summer.

The Jamaica international was initially in talks to join Premier League rivals Fulham, but after seeing that respective move fall through, he began to attract interest from Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas and unnamed clubs over in Saudi Arabia, as per BBC Sport.

The Toffees’ left-winger is yet to feature in any competition so far this season, with Sean Dyche detailing the reason for his absence as both fitness concerns and uncertainty surrounding his future, though having been removed from the squad list in the club’s matchday programme, the issues appear to lie deeper than what’s being let on.

Taking to social media, the 27-year-old seemingly criticised the manager for the way he is treating him behind the scenes. He said: “Everton fans have always been great with me but it's so difficult to play for someone who don't show you respect as a person.”

Is Demarai Gray leaving Everton?

According to Football Insider, the situation gets even weirder as Everton “rejected a bid” for Gray from Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq on transfer deadline day – one would assume the manager and owners would jump at the chance to make a profit on an unhappy and unwanted player.

On September 1st at 6:30pm, Steven Gerrard’s side “lodged” a £7.5m offer for the attacker, but club chiefs “rebuffed the approach” because they didn’t feel they had the sufficient amount of time to enter the market and find a suitable replacement, which is again bizarre considering he is clearly not in the boss' plans anyway.

Everton forward Demarai Gray.

How many goals has Demarai Gray scored for Everton?

During his two years at Everton, Gray has racked up 18 goal contributions (12 goals and six assists) in 75 appearances, form which has previously seen him hailed an “attacking threat” by journalist Josh Bunting, and he continued to be just that last season.

The Birmingham-born talent recorded a total of 57 shots over the course of the previous campaign which was more than any of his fellow teammates, alongside 173 crosses which was the second-highest tally, via FBRef, showing his desire to create chances for himself and his peers in the final third.

The former Leicester star is furthermore a versatile operator having been deployed in seven different positions since the start of his career, including everywhere across the frontline and even three roles in the midfield, so he is a great option for the boss to have in the building should any unexpected injuries occur.

Following Gray’s social media outburst about Dyche, it could prove extremely difficult for the two parties to rebuild their relationship and for the player to work his way back into the fold, but considering the positive impact he brings to the side, it’s important that they try to get back on track for the sake of the club’s safety moving forward.

"Disaster" – Everton fans won’t believe what sources say about 777’s plans

Everton are in need of some good news at the moment, but unfortunately that's not what we've got in the latest update on the potential takeover by 777 Partners.

What's the latest on Everton's takeover?

It is clear that many Blues supporters have grown tired of the current ownership at Goodison Park, with both Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright finding themselves under plenty of scrutiny, and some fans even staging protests before matches this year.

It has been a turbulent period at Everton of late, with back-to-back Premier League relegation battles coming their way – a third in a row looks possible at the moment, given their start to the season – not to mention off-field issues regarding the move to a new stadium, and the issues with the owners.

A takeover is needed at the club and 777 Partners have emerged as the clear front-runners to become the new majority shareholders at Goodison, signalling the beginning of a new era at the club.

Things hadn't appeared to be going too swimmingly at the moment, with a recent report claiming that there could be a problem with legal issues with the investors and that the Premier League are currently investigating them, but a huge new update from the club confirmed that a takeover has been agreed.

Now, another new update has also dropped, but it's not exactly what Blues fans would have been hoping for.

Goodison Park awaits a Premier League game for Everton amid their financial issues.

What are 777 planning?

According to an update from Football Insider, there are concerns within Everton regarding how much investment there will be from 777 Partners:

"There is growing disquiet among senior Everton figures about how much investment there will be into the team from potential new owners 777 Partners, sources have told Football Insider. Farhad Moshiri is in advanced negotiations with the US-based private investment group about ending his turbulent tenure as majority shareholder.

"Sources have told Football Insider that Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell has submitted three different player recruitment plans to 777 chiefs to outline how the squad can be reshaped in future transfer windows once the takeover is complete.

"The response from the potential new owners is believed to have been so cold that there is growing concern among senior Goodison figures about their interest in investing in the team. It is said that 777 are planning to invest in the construction of the new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, but not in the playing squad."

This is a concerning update for any Everton fan, despite the main saga reaching a conclusion. While it is good to hear that 777 are keen on invest in the new stadium, the fact that the report reveals their coldness towards the recruitments plan has to be a concern, considering one well-placed source says it could lead to “disaster”, with an already struggling team “expected to be relegated” without significant investment.

The Blues need to be in a position where everything is running cohesively and the supporters feel content that the owners are supporting Dyche with the funds for signings, or it is hard to see the team heading in the right directon and going back to being more of a Premier League force again.

UAE open campaign with breezy victory

Seamer Mohammad Naveed contributed much to PNG’s slide, taking career-best ODI figures of 5 for 28

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Mar-2018Peter Della Penna

Mahuru Dai receives one demerit point

Papua New Guinea allrounder Mahuru Dai has received an official warning and one demerit point for violating Article 2.1.8 of the ICC code of conduct, which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match”.
The incident occurred during PNG’s revised chase of 170, after Dai was caught by the substitute fielder off Rohan Mustafa. Dai admitted the offence, and accepted the sanction.

United Arab Emirates (UAE) kicked off their World Cup Qualifiers campaign on a very positive note, easing past Papua New Guinea (PNG) in a rain-hit encounter in Harare. PNG’s target was revised from 222 to 170 from 28 after a rain break, and they didn’t get close, folding for 113. Seamer Mohammad Naveed contributed much to this slide, taking career-best ODI figures of 5 for 28.At one point PNG looked in danger of missing out on triple digits, falling to 70 for 8; none of their top five got past 12, and the innings’ top score was 24 from No. 6 Charles Amini who was eventually run out.It was PNG who chose to chase, and UAE looked like there were keen to make them pay for this decision from the outset. Their openers Rohan Mustafa and Ashfaq Ahmed put on 91 at a brisk pace, but none could kick on to big hundreds. PNG enjoyed some relief after Ashfaq fell for 50 off 56, taking two more quick wickets. The UAE middle order could not quite get going thereafter, and Mustafa was kept in check too – he eventually fell five short of a hundred, having played out 136 balls. PNG must have felt relieved to have only 222 to chase, given UAE’s start. However, rain and Naveed intervened and spoiled those plans.
