Shai Hope, Ambris centuries help West Indians rally

Shai Hope hit form early on the tour with a steady 110, while Sunil Ambris pressed his case for a Test spot, smacking 153 off 145 balls

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Nov-2017
ScorecardWICB

Centuries from Shai Hope and Sunil Ambris helped the West Indians rally to 451 for 9, despite a top-order stutter that had them at 135 for 5 at one stage on the opening day of the tour match against New Zealand A in Lincoln. The centuries hold promise for the tourists ahead of the first Test, which starts from December 1. Hope, West Indies’ highest run-getter in Tests in 2017 and their best batsman on the tours of England and Zimbabwe, struck form with a steady 110 off 133 balls. Ambris, on the other hand, pressed his case for a spot in the Test with a rapid 153 off 145 balls. The centuries were the only knocks in excess of 50 on the first day, after Roston Chase (49), Shane Dowrich (35) and Jason Holder (31) failed to carry on and convert their starts. The early damage in the West Indian innings came from fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, who had taken a 12-for in a Plunket Shield game earlier in the month. Two early wickets from Ferguson, and one from seamer Logan van Beek, had the West Indians pinned at 45 for 3 by the 12th over. Chase and Hope steadied the innings with an 81-run stand for the fourth wicket, but Chase’s dismissal – by Ferguson – was quickly followed by Jermaine Blackwood’s wicket, leaving the West Indians in danger of compiling a below-par score.Hope and Ambris averted that possibility with a 155-run partnership for the sixth wicket, that came at a rapid scoring rate of 6.88. Ambris, in particular, took the charge to New Zealand A in the third session. Having resumed on 51 after tea, Ambris raced to a hundred off 85 balls, his second fifty taking just 30 deliveries. By the time he was dismissed, the eighth wicket of the innings, Ambris had struck 24 fours and a six and had pushed the score past 400, with helpful contributions from Dowrich and Holder. The third session yielded 204 runs in 36 overs.”It was one of my better knocks for a while now,” Ambris said at the end of the day. “When I just got in, I had to play as much balls as possible, I had to leave a lot, not really try to score but play myself in. It was made a lot easier when I was batting with Shai; he was batting very quickly and took pressure off me. I was then able to score freely and capitalise on the bad deliveries.”Ferguson dismissed both centurions, and had returns of 5 for 67, while his fellow seamers, Hamish Bennett and van Beek, had one and two wickets respectively.

Hearts Could Form Dream Duo With Shankland & "Aggressive" Dynamo

Heart of Midlothian endured a quiet first few weeks of the transfer market, but over the last month or so, they have significantly boosted their squad.

Steven Naismith has added the likes of Alex Lowry, Frankie Kent, Kyosuke Tagawa and Kenneth Vargas to his senior squad recently, and he will be hoping they can shine at Tynecastle.

Indeed, the club have enjoyed a solid start to the season.

They have claimed four points from six in the Premiership while also securing progression in both the League Cup and Europa Conference League, setting up a tie against Greek side PAOK in the latter competition.

The good times appear to be back on Gorgie and with just under two weeks until the transfer window closes, Naismith still has time to add some more quality to this squad.

Will Hearts make any more signings?

The crux of the first team looks settled, yet if Hearts do qualify for the group stages of the Europa Conference League, they will need some added strength in depth.

The Jambos were linked with Jamie McGrath back in July, according to The Daily Record, and they must reignite their interest with the news that he was released by Wigan Athletic last month.

The attacking midfielder is now available on a free transfer, and he could be an excellent addition to the squad, especially judging by his performances for Dundee United whilst on loan last season.

How good is Jamie McGrath?

The 26-year-old joined the Arabs last term for a season-long loan spell, and he demonstrated just how good he was during an impressive stint North of the border.

He registered 12 goal contributions – nine goals and three assists – across 37 games, and he topped the pile in terms of overall Sofascore rating at United in the Premiership, while also ranking first for big chances created (five), key passes per game (1.6) and successful dribbles per game (0.9), emerging into one of their best attacking players.

With Lawrence Shankland smashing in 28 goals during the 2022/23 season, McGrath and the Scot could form a stunning partnership.

Jamie McGrath

Shankland showcased his own attacking qualities in what was a wonderful season on a personal level. He scored every 127 minutes in the Premiership and also demonstrated his creative side, averaging one key pass per game and grabbing four assists, meaning he could link up well with the Irishman.

McGrath has clearly shown that he can both score and create chances for his teammates and should Hearts secure group-stage European football, they could cause opposition defences on the continent.

Journalist Josh Bunting hailed the player when he joined Wigan in 2022, saying:

“Jamie McGrath is a sensational signing for Wigan Athletic, think that’s one of the best signings of the window, really liked him whilst he was at Dundalk, good on the ball, aggressive and direct and has a very good shot, he’ll score from belters at the DW I’m sure of that.”

It didn’t quite work out as anticipated at Wigan for the 26-year-old, but with the midfielder now available for nothing, Naismith must now make his move and forge a dream duo with him and Shankland.

Starc injury 'can drag on a long time' – Cummins

Pat Cummins, who suffered an injury similar to the one Mitchell Starc is carrying, says the nature of the bruised heel makes it a difficult one for the team management and medical staff to assess

Daniel Brettig23-Dec-2017

Australia’s spearhead Mitchell Starc has no chance of playing the Boxing Day Test if the example raised by his fellow fast bowler Pat Cummins is any indication. Starc has a bruised heel on his right foot, the same injury Cummins suffered during his November 2011 Test debut and which then dogged him throughout the following summer – he did not play again for Australia until mid-2012.While Cummins was then a teenager and Starc is far more seasoned, the niggardly nature of the injury makes it a complicated one for Australia’s medical staff and selectors to assess. As Cummins described, it is a problem that requires rest, and with a four-Test tour of South Africa looming in February, there is little room for recovery should the injury be aggravated in either of the two remaining dead Ashes Tests, however much Starc may want to play.”I think that’s certainly part of the thinking of the selectors, the skipper and everyone around him,” Cummins said in Melbourne. “I know for him he just wants to play every game that’s in front of him but it’s a funny kind of injury. It’s not super common but if it’s not treated well it can drag on for a long time, a bruise where you have to walk all day and bowl on.”I chatted to him about it, I had a similar one on my Test debut and it’s one of those ones there’s no way around. You can’t strap it differently, you can’t try to bowl off the other foot, it’s hard to hide from, so it’s just trying to get it early enough and not really damage it. He knows all that, the staff know all that and I’m sure they’ll work it out.”He’s doing everything he can to get right, he’s been on crutches the last few days to try to take some weight off the heel. But hasn’t tried to bowl yet or anything, we’ve just got down to Melbourne so I think the next couple days they’ll assess that. He’s absolutely itching to get out there and play, but got to make sure he’s right.”With Starc highly unlikely to play, the breach is set to be filled by the Tasmanian seamer Jackson Bird, who has spent most of the year in reserve after playing the most recent of his eight Test matches in the 2016 Boxing Day fixture against Pakistan. Bird is less a fast bowler than a seam and swing merchant, but he knows how to bowl on the MCG’s drop-in pitch, having excelled there on his debut against Sri Lanka in 2012 and also having performed well at the ground for Tasmania.”The wicket is pretty flat, the drop-in wicket,” Bird said. “Whatever length you try and bowl, you have to really bowl the ball into the wicket. Hit the wicket as hard as you can – there usually is a bit of movement on the first day or two. I find whatever length you bowl you really have to hit the wicket. Then in the second dig it usually goes reverse swing, you just have to find the right length that’s going to hit the top of the stumps and try and stand the seam up, hit the wicket hard to get the most out of it.”Mitch has still got a couple of days of training to recover, or try to recover, hopefully for Mitch’s sake his heel isn’t too serious and hedoes get up but in saying that, it’d be unbelievable to play an Ashes Test on Boxing Day. Either way, I’ll be ready and preparing as I normally would for any Test match.”In the first two Tests I left early and went and played Shield cricket for Tassie [Tasmania], so I got a fair few overs under my belt and felt like the ball came out really nicely in those couple of weeks I was away. I had a week in the Perth nets working on a few different things with Sakesy [David Saker, assistant coach]. I haven’t played a Test match since this game last year, so I’ve been ready to go for 12 months basically. If I get the opportunity, I’m really looking forward to it.”Bird said his year as a drinks waiter had been frustrating, albeit mitigated by the quality of the pace bowlers ahead of him in the queue. “It’s a little bit frustrating to not get an opportunity but I’m completely realistic in where I sit behind the fast bowlers ahead of me,” Bird said. “They’re all world-class fast bowlers, I’m under no illusions where I sit.”I’ve just got to prepare as if I’m going to play. I just need to be ready to go if any of those guys don’t come up. That’s the spot I’m in at the moment. I’m not complaining, I’m in a better spot than some blokes are. So I can’t complain too much, it’s great to be around the Australian team, especially in the Ashes.”You can only have 11 players in the team and when we’ve got such good fast bowlers around at the moment, someone’s got to miss out. It’s just been me for the past 12 months and the conditions we’ve played in haven’t helped my cause – a lot of those Tests were in the subcontinent. It is frustrating missing out – and some of the circumstances of the last 12 months made it a little bit more frustrating, but that’s the way it goes. Sometimes you’ve got to cop it on the chin and can’t complain too much about it.”The wicketkeeper Tim Paine is expected to join the squad in Melbourne on Sunday after spending some extra time at home with his family after his father-in-law suffered a stroke. “Tim’s one of the most mentally strong players I’ve ever played with,” Bird said. “He’s shown that the last couple of weeks, to get back into the Test team and perform how he has after such a long period out with career-threatening injuries when he thought he might not get back. If there’s anybody who can compartmentalise that, I think it’s him.”

Man United: Marcus Rashford’s goal record vs Arsenal

Marcus Rashford announced himself a serious talent in 2016 when he scored twice on his debut against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League.

Then only 18-years-old, it was clear Manchester United had found themselves a star striker who had the whole world at his feet, and it’s fair to say he’s gone on to meet those expectations ever since.

Just three days after he announced himself with that debut brace, Rashford did it all again on his Premier League debut, netting a brace in three first-half minutes against Arsenal at Old Trafford. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Manchester-born forward, who can play as a striker or on either wing, has since become a potent force in United and England’s attack, known for his pace and instinctive finishing abilities.

And as he prepares to face Arsenal once again in the Premier League, Football FanCast has taken a look at Rashford’s overall record against the North London outfit to date.

What is Marcus Rashford's goal record against Arsenal?

It started in perfect fashion with that three-minute brace against the Gunners on his Premier League debut, back in February 2016.

His two goals that day would prove to be the difference as Man United ran out 3-2 winners at Old Trafford to continue their bid to climb back into the top four of the Premier League.

Since then, Rashford has faced Arsenal 15 more times in all competitions but, quite amazingly, it took him until the 22/23 season to score his next goals against the Gunners, netting three in his two Premier League meetings against Mikel Arteta’s side.

That takes his overall goal record against Arsenal to just five goals in 16 appearances in all competitions.

What is Marcus Rashford’s head-to-head record against Arsenal?

Rashford has had mixed fortunes against the Gunners over the years, despite it starting like a fairytale on his debut.

He’s met them 15 times in the Premier League and just once in the FA Cup, but has won just six of those meetings, losing another six and drawing the other four.

He and Manchester United actually went three seasons between 18/19 and 20/21 without beating Arsenal in the league, before ending that run with a 3-2 victory in the 21/22 campaign. Rashford registered one of his four assists against the north London club in that game.

His one and only FA Cup meeting against Arsenal ended in a 3-1 victory in 2019, which saw him come off the bench for the final 18 meetings and get booked – one of only two bookings he’s picked up against the Gunners in his career to-date.

What is Marcus Rashford’s record at Emirates Stadium?

Rashford’s best performances against Arsenal have come at Old Trafford, not the Emirates Stadium.

The England international has only tasted victory twice in the red half of north London, the first of which came in the 17/18 season when came off the bench in the final minute of a 3-1 victory.

The second came in that FA Cup fourth-round victory in 2019, which he also could only contribute to as a substitute. Other than that, the Emirates Stadium has not been a happy hunting ground for Rashford over the years.

His only goal at the Emirates came last season. The forward opened the scoring in the 17th minute, but Man United eventually lost the game 3-2, with Eddie Nketiah scoring a 90th-minute winner for the Gunners.

Who does Marcus Rashford have the best record against?

Of his 123 goals for Manchester United to date, it is actually Leicester City who have suffered against Marcus Rashford the most.

The Foxes have come up against the forward 16 times over the years with Rashford netting eight times, two of which came just last season.

However, if you are to add assists to his record and go by total goal involvements, Rashford’s favourite opponents are actually Newcastle United. In the 11 times he’s faced the Magpies, the forward has an impressive 10-goal involvements (five goals, five assists).

Other clubs Rashford particularly enjoys playing against are Chelsea and Liverpool, who he has scored six times against each, and West Ham, Man City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Bournemouth (five goals against each).

What is Marcus Rashford’s goal record for Manchester United?

Let’s not forget, Rashford began his Manchester United career with four goals in two games, and since then he’s gone on to become of the Red Devil’s most iconic goalscorers.

To date, the England international has 123 goals and 68 assists in over 350 first-team appearances for the Red Devils. That doesn’t quite put him in the top 10 of United’s all-time top goalscorers but he’s not far off it – he needs just 32 more to go level with Paul Scholes, who is 10th on Man United’s historic list of goalscorers.

The majority of Rashford’s goals have come in the Premier League (76), while he also has a quite impressive record in the Carabao Cup with 14 goals in 22 appearances. Rashford’s FA Cup record is just eight goals in 31 appearances.

In Europe, the forward has scored 13 in the Europa League and 12 in the Champions League, but he failed to find the net in his one and only appearance in the UEFA Super Cup.

It’s only a matter of time before we see Rashford join the Premier League’s 100 club and he could do it this season if he has a strong campaign, needing just 24 to join such an illustrious list of Premier League legends.

How many debuts has Marcus Rashford scored on?

Rashford announced himself with doubles in his Europa League and Premier League debuts just three days apart, and he ended up following suit in other competitions during the early stages of his career.

He also scored on his Carabao Cup debut the following season as Jose Mourinho’s Man United beat Northampton Town in September 2016. Twelve months later Rashford did it again, this time on his Champions League debut, netting in a 3-0 victory over FC Basel at Old Trafford.

To top it off, he found the back of the net on his England debut at just 18 years old. It took him just three minutes to do so as well, as the Three Lions went on to beat Australia 2-1 at the Stadium of Light.

That makes it five goal-scoring debuts for Rashford, with the FA Cup being the only debut he couldn’t find the net.

What is Manchester United’s head-to-head record against Arsenal?

The first time Manchester United and Arsenal met competitively, both sides had different names. United were known as Newton Heath and the Gunners went by the name of Woolwich Arsenal. They first faced off in October 1894 in what seems like a thrilling 3-3 draw.

The first time they clashed under the names we know them by today was in February 1920, with Man United emerging as 3-0 winners at Highbury.

In all competitions, the teams have met each other 239 times over the course of history, with Man United registering 99 wins, 86 defeats and 53 draws. In the Premier League, where these two sides once competed in a bitter title-chasing rivalry, United also have the upper hand over their now top-four rivals, winning 26 and losing 18 of their 62 meetings to-date.

When is the next match between the two teams?

Manchester United travel to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday 3rd September, with the match scheduled to kick-off at 4:30pm UK time.

It will be the fourth Premier League match of the season for both sides. By then, the Red Devils will have already played Wolves, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest, while Arsenal will be hoping to have achieved a 100% record against Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Fulham by the time this game comes around.

Both sides will have huge aspirations to achieve big things this campaign. Arsenal will have the Premier League title in their sights having fallen short last term, despite leading the way for the majority of the campaign. United might not be ready for a title challenge just yet, but they will feel like they can ask some serious questions of those who will be there or thereabouts, with a top-four finish surely the bare minimum for them.

Either way, this has always been a fiery fixture with a lot of history behind from when they were battling for Premier League honours together in the later 1990s and early 2000s.

While both have dropped off from those levels over the past 10–15 years, there remains no love lost between Man United and Arsenal, and this is expected to be yet another epic battle between two Premier League giants.

Umpires to remain alert for pitch behaviour

The match referee will not compromise the safety of the players. If it continues to behave dangerously, the match could still be called off

Sidharth Monga in Johannesburg27-Jan-2018

BCCI

The Wanderers pitch has by no means given an all-clear even though the Test is set to continue after the umpires took the teams off 19 minutes before stumps on day three. The umpires will remain on alert for any other behaviour they might consider dangerous to the safety of the players. The pitch has had extravagant bounce and seam movement throughout, but on day three the umpires were worried about players’ safety. After meetings between the match officials and the captains, and possibly consultation with the ICC, the match referee decided to continue play on day four. ESPNcricinfo understands this was more deferring the decision to the next morning so they could sleep over the decision, understand the ramifications of it, including other sanctions and the fact that India had already courageously fought their way with the bat on this pitch, and hope the pitch settles down on day four. Despite all these considerations, the match referee will not compromise the safety of the players. If it continues to behave dangerously, the match could still be called off.The officials could afford to buy the overnight time because they were losing only 19 minutes. There’s no telling how it might have panned out if a batsman had been hit on the head at, say half past three and not 11 minutes before 5pm. The delivery that led to the suspension of play was a short-pitched delivery from Jasprit Bumrah, which hit Dean Elgar on the helmet, but the umpires had been concerned all day with balls rearing off a length and hitting the batsmen in the ribs, gloves, and thighs. The first time the match officials spoke to the teams about the state of the pitch was during the tea break on day three. According to India’s manager Sunil Subramaniam, the umpires’ concern was that the new ball could behave dangerously. While India’s second innings lasted only one ball with the second new ball, Elgar was hit four times in 8.3 overs of bowling with the new ball in South Africa’s innings. In the captain’s meeting with the match referee, India – in a great position to win the Test and after having braved this difficult pitch – made it clear there was no way they wanted the match to stop. The South Africa manager said they told the match referee they were not going to comment whether the pitch was safe or not, but they were happy to play if the officials deemed the pitch to be safe. The eventual decision still rests with the match referee. There is provision in the law that they could attempt to repair the pitch, if possible, to see if the match can continue, but it can’t be done if it disadvantages one of the teams, which in this case will be India’s fate. So that route is unlikely to be taken. The pitch has come in for harsh criticism from experts and former cricketers covering this series, with Michael Holding calling it a “s**t pitch”, one he would rate 2 on 100.
