Aston Villa fans were overjoyed with Conor Hourihane performance vs Reading

Aston Villa found their form again in the English Championship on Tuesday night, ending a three game winless streak with a 3-0 victory at home to struggling Reading.

With automatic promotion all but beyond Steve Bruce’s outfit, the goal in the tail-end of the season is ensuring they bring form, confidence and momentum into the play-offs.

Birkir Bjarnason, Scott Hogan and Conor Hourihane were the goal heroes of the evening, all scoring in the second half to put the game beyond doubt after a first 45 minutes of missed chances.

Fans were delighted with the win and performance, singling out Hourihane for particular praise after his goal brought his tally for the season to double figures, an outstanding return for a midfielder.

It was the Republic of Ireland international’s first start since 17th March and fans are now calling on him to start in every match he is available for.

Liverpool fans want Clyne to start at right-back instead of Alexander-Arnold vs Palace

Liverpool will hope to further cement their top-four spot in the Premier League when they face strugglers Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday, and Reds fans want Nathaniel Clyne to start at right-back to minimise the threat of Eagles winger Wilfried Zaha.

The Merseyside outfit suffered a big blow when Joe Gomez limped off with an ankle problem in the opening stages of England’s friendly win against the Netherlands in Amsterdam last week, and he now looks set to miss the trip to south London through injury.

Trent Alexander-Arnold may be in pole position to start on the right side of the back four against the tricky Ivory Coast international, although Clyne could also be in contention having returned to action for the U23 side in recent weeks after nearly a year on the sidelines through injury.

Liverpool supporters have been quick to have their say on Jurgen Klopp’s right-back conundrum via social media, and they want Clyne in the starting XI instead of Alexander-Arnold, who was criticised by the Anfield faithful following his display against Manchester United earlier this month.

While one said “Clyne needs to start against Palace”, another said “I’m hoping Clyne starts v Palace especially with Zaha playing”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

HYS: Should Bernardo Silva or Sterling start vs Tottenham?

After his attempts to outfox Liverpool with a 3-1-3-3 formation backfired in the Champions League on Tuesday night, Pep Guardiola looks set to return to the 4-3-3 system that has produced Manchester City’s best football this season when his side travel to Wembley to face Tottenham on Saturday.

But with so many offensive options available to Guardiola, especially now Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero have returned from injury, who starts where isn’t quite as clear as it was a few months ago – and Raheem Sterling’s berth on the right wing may well be under threat.

Indeed, summer signing Bernardo Silva – who Transfermarkt value at £36million – was arguably City’s most effective player in midweek, coming close to putting his side two goals up with a beautiful curler that deflected onto the post from Dejan Lovren’s head.

Sterling, meanwhile, provided an assist in a more central role but it was an otherwise forgettable performance from the former Reds youngster.

So, which attacker would you start on the right wing against Spurs on Saturday – the Portuguese playmaker or the 37-cap Englishman? Let us know by voting below…

Sorry folks, this poll is now closed!

Liverpool fans make same joke about Salah in response to Roma tickets

Following a football club around the globe is an expensive hobby, and Liverpool fans will certainly be thinking that this week as they make plans for a trip to Italy.

On May 2, the club’s travelling supporters will flock to the Stadio Olimpico for a crucial Champions League semi-final tie against Roma.

The atmosphere will either be jovial, tense or miserable depending on the outcome of the first leg at Anfield, which will be staged next Tuesday.

In order for a fan to grab a seat at the Italian ground, they will have to pay £73 each, according to Liverpool Echo journalist James Pearce.

The hike in price compared to the group fixture against Chelsea has been met with some frustration from fans, but many think that the increase is down to the fact that the May clash is a semi-final.

Others opted to poke fun at the situation by claiming that Roma have made the tickets more expensive because Liverpool swiped their star player Mohamed Salah last summer for a reported £35m fee.

Liverpool fans, who are keen for the club to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele this summer, have a reason to be optimistic heading into the semi-final due to the fact that they are the only team in the competition that have not suffered a defeat.

The Reds overcame Manchester City 5-1 in the quarter-finals to reach the last four.

Newcastle fans don’t want Carroll return

Newcastle fans have been discussing a possible return to Tyneside for Andy Carroll, and most fans are in agreement they would not take the towering striker back.

According to reports, Andy Carroll has been sent home from West Ham training after a dispute with David Moyes, and the rumour mill is already churning out possible landing spots for the ex-Magpie.

Carroll has managed three league goals in just seven starts due to injuries this season, and the training ground bust-up could certainly mean the 29 year-old is on his way out of West Ham.

Capped nine times by England, Carroll made 80 league appearances on Tyneside before moving to Liverpool in 2011, grabbing 31 league goals during that time.

Newcastle are having their own problems in the striking department, with none of Islam Slimani, Dwight Gayle or Joselu able to consistently find the net.

The Magpies have been linked with a move for Hull City’s Abel Hernandez, but could Carroll be a better option?

Fans don’t seem to think so, thanks mainly to his injury record, and some of the best Twitter reactions can be found below…

Newcastle fans desperate for Dubravka to stay

Martin Dubravka’s January move to Newcastle United did not exactly capture the attention of the club’s supporters.

Indeed, little was known about the 29-year-old ahead of his arrival at St James’ Park on transfer deadline day at the start of 2018.

Newcastle acquired his services on loan from Sparta Prague, and it did not take long for the stopper to make an impression, with his debut coming in the club’s 1-0 win over Manchester United on February 11.

Dubravka has continued to impress between the sticks for Newcastle, and kept another clean sheet against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

There was one outstanding save from the Slovakia international against the Blues when he tipped an Olivier Giroud effort over the crossbar.

Dubravka’s future is still unclear, although it is understood that Newcastle have the chance to make the loan move permanent this summer, and the club’s supporters are absolutely desperate for that to occur.

Aston Villa fans delighted with Chester

James Chester played every minute of Aston Villa’s 2017-18 Championship campaign, which is some achievement.

The 29-year-old has really come into his own over the last couple of seasons, and is now widely recognised as one of the best centre-backs outside of the Premier League.

Chester will be hoping to help Villa gain promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs, with Steve Bruce’s side taking on Middlesbrough in the semi-finals.

The centre-back has worn the armband in the absence of John Terry this term, and he will be key to the team’s chances of winning a spot in next season’s Premier League.

If Villa fail to return to the top flight then they will surely face a battle to keep the former Manchester United youngster in this summer’s transfer window.

The Villa supporters absolutely love the defender, and many have taken to social media to express their views on his form during the 2017-18 campaign.

Man United move closer to making Fred their first summer signing

Manchester United are close to making Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred their first transfer arrival of the summer, according to the Manchester Evening News.

What’s the story, then?

The report says that United are keen to do the deal for the Brazilian before the World Cup in Russia kicks off on June 14 and that he could have a medical as early as next week.

It goes on to say that the release clause in his contract of 60 million euros has not proved an issue in negotiations as Jose Mourinho made plain his desire to bring the player in to replace Michael Carrick in midfield.

It also says that Fred himself is keen to get the deal over the line before the big kick-off in Russia and that he is so keen on a move to United that he flew to Manchester on deadline day on the off-chance of finalising a move to Old Trafford.

Fred is an unknown quantity

The midfielder is highly-rated and it would appear that Mourinho thinks he is the man who can add dynamism and quality to his engine room but it remains to be seen how he adapts to English football.

United will be hoping he is another Fernandinho, whose energy meant he took to life in Manchester right away but the fact remains that it is a risk to sign someone unproven in this country.

Revealed: Majority of Newcastle fans would rather sign Kenedy over Yacine Brahimi

According to Portuguese media outlet A Bola, Newcastle United are one of the Premier League clubs interested in signing FC Porto winger Yacine Brahimi, rated at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, this summer.

The 28-year-old only has one year left on his contract, and it appears as though Magpies manager Rafa Benitez could be considering making an ambitious swoop for the left-sided attacker, who helped his club reach the knockout stages of the Champions League this season.

The forward scored 12 goals and provided a further 10 assists in 49 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese top flight champions, and it would certainly be a huge coup for the Tyneside outfit if they could bring the Algeria international to St James’ Park.

[ad_pod ]

However, the fact that he is a left winger suggests that Benitez, who can secure a Top 7 finish for his side next season by completing a £16m striker deal, isn’t confident that he will be able to re-sign Chelsea wide man Kenedy following a successful loan spell in the second-half of the 2017/18 campaign, where he showed his quality and quickly became a real fans’ favourite.

We asked Newcastle supporters to vote on our poll to see whether they would prefer to sign the Brazilian or Brahimi, and a whopping 71% said they would rather see the 22-year-old Blues man come back.

Kenedy’s future may well depend on the Chelsea managerial situation with Antonio Conte’s future seemingly in doubt, but Benitez doesn’t appear to be hanging around in finding potential alternatives.

Southampton cannot afford to wait as Inter move for Promes

Southampton are in danger of missing out on signing Quincy Promes from Spartak Moscow as Inter Milan are planning a £41m bid, according to soccer.ru.

What’s the word?

Promes – valued at £21.6m by Transfermarkt – was heavily linked with a move to St Mary’s in the January window, but a transfer never came to fruition.

The mid-season market is not the easiest time to bring in top-class talent, so there were suggestions that the Saints would revive their interest at the end of the campaign.

If they are to do so, then they need to move quick as Russian outlet soccer.ru are reporting that Inter Milan intend to bid around £41m for the winger.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”252976″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch 21 things that will definitely happen at the World Cup”]

That figure is significantly higher than Southampton’s rejected club-record £25m attempt in January.

What should Saints do?

The coastal club are in desperate need of some pace and power from the width given that Sofiane Boufal and Nathan Redmond were the club’s only realistic options last season.

The attacking department certainly needs some work and having Promes at his disposal would make manager Mark Hughes a happy man.

However, it is unclear whether Southampton have the funds to compete with the likes of Inter, and a lot will be based upon the player’s wishes.

The Saints managed to avoid relegation from the Premier League, but would their brush with the drop make Promes reassess his options?

Time will tell, but Hughes and his team need to move fast if they want to be part of the transfer battle.
