Newcastle Could Sign Rice 2.0 In £35m Machine

Newcastle United are considering a swoop for Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips, with the Tyneside club looking to bolster the ranks after qualifying for the Champions League.

What's the latest on Kalvin Phillips to Newcastle?

According to the Telegraph, Toon technical director Dan Ashworth is pursuing a move for the England international but has been left frustrated by the player's desire to stay at the Etihad Stadium and fight for his place next season.

Recently touted at £35m, the 27-year-old has only started for Pep Guardiola's outfit four times across all competitions this term after completing a £45m transfer from Leeds United last summer.

Despite the midfielder's public desire to remain in Manchester, the Magpies' offer of a starring role could be too enticing to resist as the transfer window takes centre-stage, especially if Guardiola is unable to provide Phillips with assurances over the number of minutes he will be provided next year.

Should Newcastle sign Kalvin Phillips?

Despite flattering to deceive with the Premier League champions – though his impact at the club was hampered by detrimental early injury issues that sidelined him for much of the first phase of the season – Phillips is a proven midfield titan on top-flight soil.

Instrumental for Leeds in reclaiming a spot among England's elite and starring during a resounding 20/21 term where the entertaining Whites clinched ninth place – just three points away from European qualification – the £160k-per-week ace cemented himself as one of the most robust midfielders in the division.

Indeed, across those two campaigns, Phillips completed 82% and 84.5% of his passes, 2.6 and 2.7 tackles per game and 1.2 and 0.5 key passes per outing, as per WhoScored.

Kalvin-Phillips-and-Pep-Guardiola

Former teammate Barry Douglas said, "as a defensive midfielder with an array of passing skills, Kalvin Phillips is probably the best I’ve played with", while former Whites boss Neil Redfearn remarked, "Bielsa has made Kalvin an expert deep-lying midfielder but he could do both roles.”

With Magpies boss Eddie Howe seeking to bolster his midfield this summer, Phillips could be a shrewd alternative to touted West Ham United star Declan Rice, with the £100m-valued man attracting attention from a plethora of top European outfits, including Newcastle, ahead of the forthcoming transfer window.

Rice has been lauded as an "absolute monster" by ESPN UK editor David Cartlidge and ranks among the top 20% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive passes, the top 15% for progressive carries, the top 5% for interceptions and the top 17% for clearances per 90, as per FBref.

Phillips is capable of replicating such metrics, evidenced in the Premier League with Leeds, notably ranking in the top 8% of midfielders in the division throughout 2021/22 for tackles and interceptions combined.

Provided license to cement a prominent role at St. James' Park, he might just harness the full might of his skill set.

Newcastle United Not In "Advanced" Talks For £50m Midfielder

Newcastle United are not in talks to bring Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella to the Premier League, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Is Nicolo Barella leaving Inter Milan?

The Italy international permanently arrived at the San Siro Stadium back in 2020 following a successful loan spell from Cagliari Calcio, and across both of his spells with Simone Inzaghi's side, he’s made a total of 187 appearances to date.

The Serie A veteran still has another three years remaining on his contract in his homeland, but having established himself as their overall fourth best-performing player last season with a WhoScored match rating of 6.94, has caught the attention of Eddie Howe.

On Wednesday evening, The Telegraph broke an exclusive story that the Magpies had entered talks regarding a deal to sign the 26-year-old for £50m, with Sky Sports further claiming that the northeast boss is a huge fan of the maestro, but a significant update has now emerged suggesting things aren't looking too hopeful just yet.

Are Newcastle signing Barella?

Taking to Twitter, Romano revealed that whilst Newcastle do admire Barella, they aren’t in fact part of any ongoing negotiations to secure his services, with Inter Milan not even having yet been contacted by the hierarchy. He wrote:

“Inter have not received formal approach or bid for Nicolo Barella. Newcastle have genuine interest as Telegraph called, but nothing is advanced at this stage. Inter sources feel £50m is nowhere near his valuation… also, nothing agreed with Barella on personal terms.”

Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella.

Should PIF make an offer for Barella?

Barella is naturally a central player and last season was recognised for his personal efforts by being named the Midfielder of the Year in Serie A, but he’s much stronger in the offensive aspect of his game so PIF should 100% consider tabling a bid to bring him to St. James’ Park.

The World Cup participant, who’s sponsored by Nike, racked up 13 goal contributions (seven assists and six goals) in 35 Serie A appearances during the previous campaign, with this form seeing him receive four man-of-the-match awards, and he was also a threat even when the ball didn't hit the back of the net.

Barella, who knows what it takes to be successful with seven career trophies to his name, recorded 121 shot-creating actions which was the second-highest total throughout the whole of his squad, via FBRef, so when you consider this alongside his versatility to operate everywhere across the midfield, it’s a no-brainer of a deal to attempt.

'CPL can co-exist with new English T20 league' – O'Donohoe

‘CPL second only to the IPL’ – O’Donohoe

Damien O’Donohoe, the chief executive of the Caribbean Premier League, believes there is space in the cricket calendar for the CPL and the new English T20 league, set to start in 2020, to co-exist and eventually benefit each other. The 2016 CPL was staged from June 29 to August 7, which is likely to be the timeframe the ECB will try to exploit with the new T20 league that is causing much angst in the county game. The ECB is keen to make use of the school summer holidays, which run from mid-July through August, to try to attract a new, younger fan base to the sport. But the fact that English cricket is only now looking to revamp its domestic T20 competition – and is still three years from having the new venture ready to launch – means other T20 leagues are well ahead in their development. While the ECB has managed to find a way of accommodating the IPL, allowing players who wish to compete to take part in the tournament, and in some cases actively encouraging participation in the Big Bash League, which has no impact on the English summer, the direct competition from the CPL could cause problems. There may be an indication of the impact during the 2017 English season when the NatWest Blast returns to a block in later summer after three seasons of being played largely on Friday nights from mid-May until late July. In those three years, the CPL has forged its position as an attractive proposition for overseas cricketers. Staging the NatWest Blast at the same time might mean missing out on the West Indian T20 stars – some of the more attractive signings in the game – who will already be in action for their CPL teams.”It probably will be a similar window but we work quite closely with the ECB and at the end of the day there will be room for both leagues,” O’Donohoe told ESPNcricinfo. “The ECB has their own challenges, and I really wouldn’t envy their job, but they are real professionals who will make it a success. What we’d love in time is that we get the English stars in the CPL and they get some of ours.”But there is no denying that English cricket is playing catch-up with the format of the game they launched in 2003. “They have much bigger challenges in terms of the politics of the game than anybody else,” O’Donohoe said. “Of course, they created this form so they should be leaders in this space, but they are not. But they have huge plans…so there will be great things to come.”Of more immediate interest to O’Donohoe is the continued growth of the CPL. He was speaking in London on Thursday when St Lucia Zouks became the last of the six sides to become a privately-owned franchise after its acquisition by Jignesh Pandya, the founder of the Rohan Group of companies, who currently serves as the Chairman of Global Sports Ventures and Royal Sports Club. Global Sports Ventures was recently announced as having signed a $70million deal with USACA.The CPL staged six matches in the USA during the 2016 season and its plans for expansion in the country are well documented. O’Donohoe hopes that “in the not too distant future” there will be two franchises based in the US. He is also determined, though, that the CPL, which he believes stands second to the IPL among the various T20 leagues, needs to continue to play to its own strengths.”When we speak to the guys at the Big Bash, which we do on a daily basis, they have a very different idea of what they are trying to do, trying to bring a whole new audience to the game. Some of their games get 80,000 people, which we could never do in the Caribbean, but from an international point of view we have 80 million TV viewers in India, are the first professional league to go into America and have our six franchises sold and hopefully in the not too distant future we can have two franchises in the US.”Our single-biggest issue with the CPL has always been time zones and when we play our games. We have a huge international audience but if we play games during the day it doesn’t fit with our product, we are a local product and can’t fit it just for an international audience. The great thing about the east coast would be the time zone. Los Angeles would be fantastic so would San Francisco and Silicon Valley. We would love to go there in time, but the east coast will be our focus initially. New York would be No. 1 on our list. But we have a lot of work to do.”

Chelsea Could Sign Their Next Tammy Abraham At Stamford Bridge

The next crop of exciting Chelsea youngsters is being assembled.

The club has recently completed the signings of Andrey Santos and Kendry Paez, as the new ownership and Mauricio Pochettino begins the quest to bring the biggest global talents to Stamford Bridge.

Another exciting teen that has been tipped to move to the English capital is Adama Bojang.

What’s the latest on Adama Bojang to Chelsea?

According to the Guardian, the Blues are in a hotly contested race for the 19-year-old alongside Manchester United, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Wolves.

He is attracting such vast interest due to his generational potential and his availability for an extremely low sum of €3m (£2.6m) from Steve Biko FC in his native Gambia.

However, the report details that his club has received an offer from an unnamed German side this week, with RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt also keenly tracking the West African superstar.

It is understood that Bojang would prefer a move to the Bundesliga, but if a Premier League side tables a suitable offer this may change his mind.

Who is Adama Bojang?

The forward has risen to international prominence thanks to his performances for his country at the U20 AFCON, as in six games, he scored four times from 1.79 xG, and notched one assist, equating to a contribution every 90 minutes.

His strikes included a hat-trick against South Sudan in the quarter-final and the winner in the next round against Nigeria. These results enabled Gambia to qualify for the 2023 U20 World Cup, and he was named in the CAF Best XI Team of the Tournament.

Described as “complete” by scout Jacek Kulig, 6-foot Bojang has been hailed for his pace, athleticism, movement, and technique as this set of imperious qualities has seen him compared to former Chelsea ace Tammy Abraham.

For the West London outfit, the 6 foot 3 star was a dependable and threatening asset, finding the net on 30 occasions in 82 appearances.

Tammy Abraham

Rather unluckily, Thomas Tuchel opted to sanction Abraham’s exit to Roma to provide room for Romelu Lukaku, which has since unravelled into a disaster.

The former Swansea has retained his goal-scoring touch in Italy, with 48 goal involvements in 107 appearances.

Once lauded as “incredible” by Frank Lampard, Abraham, and Bojang share an abundance of similar traits as their exceptional speed and ability to operate as a dominant focal point are two required characteristics of a modern number nine.

The Blues should accelerate their attempts to complete this deal as for such a low price it is relatively risk-free and could evolve into something sensational.

Nadeem, Kaushal inflict innings-defeat on Odisha

Jharkhand displaced Karnataka to finish table toppers of Group B after crushing Odisha within three days to win by an innings and 93 runs

On a day which saw 15 wickets fall, Odisha crumbled around Jharkhand’s spinners to fold for 103 and lost the match by an innings and 93 runs in three days in Thumba. Jharkhand collected seven points to top the Group B table, displacing Karnataka, while Odisha were consigned to their first outright defeat of the season. While the ball did not grip and spin viciously despite the puffs of dust, Odisha’s batsmen struggled to come to terms with the slowness of the surface and the lack of bounce.Shahbaz Nadeem followed up his first-innings four-for with 3 for 28 to finish with a match haul of seven, and Kaushal Singh took 3 for 17.Kaushal also came good with the bat earlier in the day: his unbeaten 86 took Jharkhand to 348 with a first-innings lead of 196. Kaushal was denied a second first-class century after Sunny Gupta retired hurt on on 18, having twisted his ankle while running between the wickets.Jharkhand began with spin from both ends in Odisha’s second innings with Nadeem and Kaushal sharing the new ball. Ranjit Singh and Sandeep Pattnaik put on an opening stand of 25 in 10.2 overs before Ranjit ran himself out, changing his mind after coming halfway down having tucked the ball to midwicket.Five overs later, Odisha captain Govinda Poddar was caught behind trying to glance. Poddar stood his ground, but the umpire raised his finger.Pattnaik and Subhranshu Senapati got together for a 20-run stand but Odisha lost six wickets for 19 runs. Both Senapati and Pattnaik were offered reprieves, but neither could capitalise, falling to the two spinners in consecutive overs. Senapati was caught off Nadeem while Pattnaik perished after shuffling back to a quick and flat one from Kaushal.Biplab Samantray was caught brilliantly by Virat Singh at silly point for a duck off Nadeem, who by now was bowling slow through the air and getting the ball to dip, making Odisha’s batsmen reach out.Odisha slipped to 84 for 8 with the wicket of Suryakant Pradhan, who was caught off Kaushal trying to clear long-on. Deepak Behera and Dhiraj Singh pushed the score past 100 before falling within three balls of the 47th over. The lack of bounce wasn’t as severe when Jharkhand batted in the morning. They lost Nadeem off the third ball of the day after which Tiwary came out to resume his innings on 65 having retired hurt on the second day. Tiwary scored 13 more before he was bowled through the gate off a straight ball from Basant Mohanty.Kaushal, who was unbeaten on 22 overnight, opened up and struck lusty blows once Gupta had retired hurt.Kaushal added 30 more for the ninth wicket with Ajay Yadav, before the latter was trapped lbw by Dhiraj, although the batsman indicated an inside edge. That wicket left Kaushal stranded on 86 off 124 balls, which included eight fours and five sixes.

I can do anything to overcome the odds – Jadhav

Kedar Jadhav on his batting in Pune, on batting with Virat Kohli, and on batting through pain

Sidharth Monga17-Jan-2017

Kedar Jadhav did the unthinkable and outshone Virat Kohli – a likely all-time great – with his knock in the first ODI•AFP

Kedar Jadhav is 31 years old, but on Sunday he did what only boys not bogged down by realities of life can dream of. He walked out at 63 for 4, with his parents, his wife and his daughter in attendance, and stunned England with a century that helped India chase down 350. It was an innings that overshadowed a really exceptional effort from a man who now has legitimate claims to being one of India’s best three ODI batsmen of all time. It was an innings where Kohli had to push himself. Imagine. Jadhav played a knock that outshone Kohli effort. Only boys dream of just walking in with the match all but lost and then running away with it, with a man destined to be an all-time great watching in awe at times. One such time was when Joe Root and Moeen Ali had bowled 10 straight balls without a boundary. Thirty-three runs had come off the last 35 balls. This was the quietest England had managed to keep this Jadhav-Kohli partnership of 200. To the last ball of this over, the 27th, Jadhav made room. Moeen saw it. He fired it into the pads. There was no room to play a forceful shot now, especially with the leg side packed. Jadhav, though, went ahead with his attempted drive over mid-off to this short ball. The ball flew far enough to meet the boundary skirting on the half-volley.A Hawk-Eye indication of where Moeen Ali pitched that ball•Hawk-Eye

It was just Jadhav’s bad luck that, later in the night, Kohli played a shot even more awesome. This one didn’t get talked about so much. Two days later, Jadhav explained why he could execute a shot like that. And one sweep against the turn of Adil Rashid, straight over mid-on for a six.”As a kid, I played more tennis-ball cricket than with the cricket ball,” Jadhav said. “There used to be a tournament where you could hit fours and sixes only straight down the ground. If you hit on the sides you were given out. So that’s how I got into this habit that even if there is bounce, if the ball is at a manageable height and if I feel I can clear 30 yards, I can do it. I could do this with the tennis ball. So the flow with which I was playing yesterday, I thought if there isn’t much bounce and if I can get a bit of elevation, I can hit out. In that over we hadn’t got a boundary and you needed a boundary every over to maintain that asking rate. So I took that option and it clicked.”On the night, as Kohli pushed Jadhav with the running between the wickets, you got the impression he was struggling to keep up, but he turned down only those runs that were not on. Jadhav later said he will come back as a better runner, but his strength and endurance is not to be underestimated. Two years ago he went to Australia to represent India A and played on despite what he thought was some pain in his hand. When the pain didn’t recede even after he came back home, he got it checked only to find he had fractured his hand.”I realised that if I could perform well in Australia for India despite carrying a fracture, I can bear any pain,” Jadhav said. “If I have to overcome odds, I know I can do anything. That’s how I always think, and since I keep achieving it most of the times, my belief in my abilities continues to grow.”That doesn’t stop Jadhav from watching against complacency. Jadhav’s second century may have given him a more permanent spot in the India ODI side, but he is not taking it for granted. “There shouldn’t be a change [in my approach],” Jadhav said. “I always play every game as my last game. Whenever you represent your country, you’ve to give more than 100%. I’ll try and do that in whatever games I get, whenever I bat or bowl.”Jadhav played some IPL cricket with Virender Sehwag at Delhi Daredevils, and he showed shades of Sehwag’s thinking in the way he approached the chase.’Whenever you bat with Virat, it helps you, because the bowlers focus on him’ – Jadhav•Associated Press

“Since we were four down, England were looking to attack,” Jadhav said. “It was good that many fielders were in catching positions rather than saving boundaries. The wicket was good for batting, so I had a lot of gaps to score boundaries. And my natural game is to try and dominate the opposition whenever I bat. I look to take the bowlers on. So I was just playing in that flow, and because we had to chase 350, irrespective of the situation, we had to maintain the tempo.”It helped that Kohli was at the other end, which meant all of England’s energies were spent on the more accomplished partner. Jadhav had said after the match that he rued that he hadn’t got to bat as much with Kohli as he would have liked. Before Sunday, Jadhav had batted with Kohli three times.”Whenever you bat with Virat, it helps you,” Jadhav said. “Because the bowlers’ focus would be on him – how to get him out, how to control him. So that’s an advantage. If you are batting with him, you sometimes get loose balls and more opportunities to score. The bowlers are not able to put a lot of pressure on you, so that helps a lot.”
