Advocaat’s £4m Rangers Gem Would Thrive Under Beale

Glasgow Rangers will be without the services of Alfredo Morelos next season as Michael Beale confirmed that the striker is leaving the club after six years.

This leaves the club with only Antonio Colak, Fashion Sakala and Kemar Roofe as the centre-forward options at the club as it stands heading into next season.

The Englishman will surely be eying a few players in the summer transfer window, especially with Roofe’s injury issues and Sakala’s poor finishing skills.

The Zambian has netted just eight times across 37 appearances this season and although the player shows plenty of enthusiasm, his lack of cutting-edge is a major worry heading into 2023/24.

Beale must wish he could rewind the clock in order to utilise a player who was signed by Dick Advocaat in 1999 and has since entered cult hero status at the Ibrox side; Michael Mols.

What did Michael Mols achieve at Rangers?

Beale plays an attacking style of football which would have allowed the Dutchman to thrive, linking up well with two wingers and an attacking midfielder while he could also hold the ball up to great effect and bring others into play.

The £4m signing from the Eredivisie during Advocaat’s second season in charge of the Light Blues had the potential to transform their dominance in Scotland to the continent.

He enjoyed a wonderful start to life at the club, scoring four goals before a horrific injury suffered against Bayern Munich in the Champions League proved to be a career changer for the striker.

When he came back after a couple of seasons of stop-start progress in 2002/03, he was a different player. Mols couldn’t rely on his blistering pace anymore, therefore he turned into a more intelligent striker, someone that Beale could do with next season.

The Dutchman didn’t lose his finishing touch, scoring 13 league goals that term as Rangers eventually won the treble, while adding in another 11 during his final campaign for the club in 2003/04.

That initial tally happens to be better than Sakala's seasonal record in Glasgow, with the club's current striker having not scored more than 12 in a single campaign yet.

Rangers manager Michael Beale

Mols' ability to confuse defenders with his famous turn, giving him an extra yard of space to unleash a shot terrorised countless players during his time in Scotland and although the injury changed his nature, he didn’t lose the most important skill – finishing.

Prime Mols in this current Rangers side would be a massive danger, with Todd Cantwell on the right and Ryan Kent on the left threading him plenty of passes from which he could cause serious chaos from.

Advocaat struck gold signing the attacker, and his cult hero status in Glasgow was well-earned.

Tottenham Could Sign The Next Gvardiol

Tottenham Hotspur's manager search continues to rumble on, with the only definitive news of late coming from journalist Dan Kilpatrick, who noted Julian Nagelsmann's exit from contention.

It has been nothing but bad news of late for the Lilywhites, capped off by their poor showing over the weekend which saw them lose precious ground in the race to retain European football.

In an effort to appease fans, fellow writer Jack Pitt-Brooke did release a potential four-man shortlist of those who pose an alternative to the German coach, of which Xabi Alonso remains an option.

As someone lacking long-held experience as a boss at the top of the game, his persisting presence around this job vacancy only adds to the credence regarding the rumours. Despite the 41-year-old having only overseen 41 matches of top-flight football, Daniel Levy has clearly been convinced of something that makes the former Liverpool midfielder a worthy candidate.

Although tactically very new to the game, his pedigree as one of the best in his role for many years as a player makes him a desirable coach to play under.

Should Spurs swoop to appoint him, it could aid their reported pursuit of AS Roma's Brazilian centre-back Roger Ibanez, who despite an €80m (£71m) release clause could cost closer to €50m (£43m).

How has Roger Ibanez played this season?

As a flexible defender who has featured both in a pairing and a back three this season, the 24-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding year under Jose Mourinho.

This versatility instantly would make him a fine asset for Alonso, who too flits between various shapes that include a 3-4-3 and 4-2-3-1. However, it is his imperious defensive qualities that would truly endear him to the Real Madrid legend, as his 2.1 interceptions, 2.1 tackles and 2.9 clearances per game have led to his 7.04 average rating, via Sofascore.

Pairing this with an 88% pass accuracy is suggestive that the stalwart would also thrive whilst playing out from the back, with Bayer Leverkusen have sought to do since they appointed their new boss.

xabi-alonso-tottenham-manager

An affinity for striding out of defence alongside unflappable defensive qualities unsurprisingly draws comparisons with RB Leipzig wonderkid Josko Gvardiol, who has been imperious ever since that winter World Cup.

When compared, the two rank similarly for blocked shots (0.37 vs 0.45), and pass interceptions (4.65 vs 5.03), indicative of their ability to be in the right place at the right time and position themselves well, while their pass completion percentage (90.11% vs 92%), via 1One versus One demonstrates their ball-playing ability.

This was further outlined in that tournament in Qatar, where Gvardiol averaged 1.6 tackles and 5.3 clearances per game, as well as a 90% pass accuracy, via Sofascore.

As the foundation of Mourinho's backline, it pays to be a top-quality defender under the tutelage of a world-class manager. Journalist Josh Bunting even noticed this, branding Ibanez "outstanding" within this system just last year.

Should he move to north London with Alonso, the two could provide another instant foundation with which success could be built, without having to spend near the reported £75m needed to sign the Croatian alternative.

South Africa internationals unavailable for first half of Ram Slam T20

Some of South Africa’s international players will be unavailable for at least the first half of the domestic 20-over competition, which will impact CSA’s ability to grow the profile of the tournament. The fixtures of the Ram Slam T20 Challenge were announced on Tuesday and the tournament is scheduled to run from November 12 to December 16, which overlaps with the Test team’s tour to Australia that ends on November 28.This means international players, including Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada, will only feature peripherally in the tournament, despite CSA’s desire to have their big names available for as much of the competition as possible. Such was South Africa’s desire to try and promote their shortest format like India, Australia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, West Indies and England have done, that they moved a Test in Sri Lanka’s tour of South Africa from mid-December to mid-January to free up the holiday period for Ram Slam T20. Although they have achieved that, the first 18 matches of the 32-game tournament will take place with the Test team playing fixtures in Hobart and Adelaide.South Africa’s 20-over competition has struggled to gain the same glamour as some of its counterparts for two reasons. Chiefly, it has not attracted enough international stars, not even from South Africa, and this will only change in the second half of the event this year. The tournament has also been unable to contract too many big names as the declining Rand is an unattractive currency, and the timing of the tournament is awkward for many players. In some years, it clashed with the Big Bash League. In a few seasons, it has clashed with Test fixtures in other countries. The competition has retained its sponsor for now. Courier company RAM were reviewing their backing of the tournament after last season’s competition was marred by match-fixing allegations which saw Gulam Bodi banned for 20 years for attempting to manipulate matches. CSA insists Bodi did not succeed. The investigation into the allegations has not reached its conclusion with the South African board still expected to name other players it intends to sanction. The rest of South Africa’s domestic season will take place as normal, beginning with the four-day competition that is split into two rounds of five matches each. The one-day cup will be played in a single block in February and March, when the national side will be in New Zealand, which also makes them unavailable for those games. The second-tier semi-professional tournament still includes Namibia and will be played as three-day and one-day fixtures but the 20-over tournament has fallen away in favour of the season-opening Africa Cup. Now in its second edition, the Africa Cup is played over four weekends with the table-topping team from each pool advancing to a finals weekend. All teams play only three matches and it also includes teams from Zimbabwe, Namibia and Kenya.

Liverpool Want To Hand No.10 Shirt To £50k-A-Week Ace

Liverpool are planning on handing Alexis Mac Allister the No.10 shirt if he joins from Brighton this summer, according to a new report.

Is Mac Allister set to leave Brighton?

The future of the 24-year-old has been a major talking point of late, with a number of clubs seemingly looking at signing him at the end of the season. He has enjoyed a standout campaign for the Seagulls, scoring ten times in the Premier League, as well as small matter of winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina.

Mac Allister was a big performer for his country in Qatar, scoring once and also registering an assist for Angel Di Maria in the final victory over France, as he displayed his box-to-box quality, providing the legs that allowed Lionel Messi to wreak havoc further up the pitch.

Liverpool have been continually linked with a move for the Brighton man in recent months, with the Reds considering him one of the strongest options to bring in and solve their midfield woes. A new update further suggests that their interest isn't going away any time soon.

Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

Are Liverpool likely to sign Mac Allister?

According to Ole [via Caught Offside], Liverpool are keeping their No.10 shirt available for Mac Allister to make his own, should he decide to move to Anfield in the summer transfer window. The famous jersey hasn't been worn by anyone this season, with Sadio Mane wearing it before his move to Bayern Munich last year.

This says a lot about how highly Mac Allster is thought of by Liverpool, with No.10 worn by some truly great players down the years, with Mane someone who is an undoubted modern-day legend, for example. Before him, though, the likes of John Barnes, Michael Owen and Philippe Coutinho also donned it, becoming heroes in their own right.

The £50,000-a-week Argentine could be such a perfect signing for the Reds, combining guile and technical quality in a No.8 role with a strong team ethic and good defensive work, having averaged 2.1 and 1.5 tackles per game in the Premier League and World Cup respectively.

At 24, he is significantly younger than the likes of Jordan Henderson (32), Thiago (32) and Fabinho (29), too, and he could give Liverpool the end product that they have often sorely lacked all season long, considering no player in the middle of the park has scored more than once in the Premier League.

Former Kenya captain Steve Tikolo has been appointed coach of the Uganda national team, ahead of the side’s participation in the World Cricket League Division Three scheduled for 2017.This will be Tikolo’s second stint with Uganda; he served as Uganda’s assistant and batting coach in 2012-13. During that tenure, Uganda won the T20 African Premier League and qualified for the 2014 World Cup Qualifier after finishing in the top two with Nepal at WCL Division Three in May 2013. This experience is said to have counted in Tikolo’s favour, when compared to other candidates.”I am not a stranger in Uganda,” Tikolo told journalists at a function organised by the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA). “I have been here several times. This is my second home and I will be comfortable. I am excited and anxious in a positive way.”Speaking of his goals as coach, Tikolo highlighted the team’s quest for a Division Two berth. Uganda finished last in the 10-team 2014 World Cup Qualifier, which put them back in Division Three. After being promoted once again at the end of 2014 in Malaysia, Uganda finished last in the group stage at 2015 Division Two in Namibia, resulting in relegation back to Division Three once more, this time with Canada.”Our immediate target is to qualify back to Division Two. I am determined to achieve the targets before me. I am a man of few words and my work will speak for itself.”In an international career spanning almost 18 years, Tikolo played 135 ODIs and 15 T20Is for Kenya. His attractive batting, useful part-time bowling and leadership position in the side made him the face of Kenyan cricket during its heyday in the early 2000s.

A trio of teenage pace bowlers have been handed England Lions places for the one-day tri-series against Pakistan A and Sri Lanka A. Lancashire’ Saqib Mahmood, Sussex’s George Garton and Sam Curran of Surrey are part of the 13-man squad which will be captained by Dawid Malan. The trio, part of the England’s Under-19 World Cup squad in Bangladesh earlier this year, are joined in the pace-bowling options by the slightly more senior pair of Tom Curran and Jamie Overton. Sam Curran will join the squad midway through the series so that he is available for Surrey’s Championship match against Hampshire.Worcestershire provide two batsmen in Joe Clarke, who has scored three Championship hundreds this season including a match-winning one against Leicestershire this week, and Brett D’Oliveira, who is also averaging over 50 in the Championship.Liam Livingstone, the hard-hitting Lancashire batsman, has been called-up alongside Northamptonshire’s Ben Duckett and Kent’s Daniel Bell-Drummond.Malan, who was in England’s T20 squad for the match against Sri Lanka but did not get capped, is joined by two players who have played for England in the Hampshire allrounder Liam Dawson, who took three wickets on debut against Sri Lanka, and Sam Billings. The Lions call-ups mean the players will be unavailable for their counties at a time when teams are pushing for knockout places in the Royal London Cup and T20 Blast, but the selectors have done their best to ease disruption and players will be released for T20 Blast matches July 22 which is a day when Pakistan A play Sri Lanka A.”There is a balance of players who have represented the Lions before, with a few new faces for the future who we feel will benefit from the experience of and exposure to Lions cricket,” James Whitaker, the national selector, said. “We also had to be respectful to the counties who have important domestic fixtures, while again balancing that with our own competitiveness, and making sure we can perform well.”Andy Flower, who will be head coach, said: “It is important for the Lions to play home matches in the summer as well as touring during the winter for a number of reasons, and we are grateful to the counties for recognising that if we are going to reap the benefits of playing abroad in the winter, we have to offer the equivalent opportunity to the developing cricketers of Sri Lanka and Pakistan.””We’ve had quite a large transition from last winter’s Lions squad to the national side, and that means we will have a much younger group. That is going to make this a challenging series against some experienced cricketers from Sri Lanka and Pakistan, but it will provide a great opportunity for our young players to test themselves.”The series starts with Pakistan A facing Sri Lanka A at Cheltenham on July 18 before England play their first match against Pakistan A the following day. Northamptonshire then host two matches on July 21 and 22 before the series concludes in Canterbury on July 24 and 25.

Rangers Must Unleash "Impressive" £21k-p/w Gem

Glasgow Rangers will be aiming for nine points from their last three matches of the Scottish Premiership season in order to end the campaign on a high note.

Michael Beale’s side showed exactly what they can do if every member of the squad is pulling in the same direction during their Old Firm triumph at Ibrox last weekend, and an away trip to Easter Road to take on Hibernian this afternoon could allow the manager to experiment with the line-up slightly.

Beale will have to make a few decisions on his starting XI, and one of them should be unleashing Ianis Hagi from the first whistle, and having scored twice and grabbed an assist against Hibs in eight previous matches, he could cause havoc again.

Could Ianis Hagi start for Rangers against Hibs?

The £21k-per-week gem has not long returned to the squad following a year-long layoff due to an injury suffered in the Scottish Cup last year, and Beale has slowly reinstated him into the first team.

If Hagi can return to the form he displayed during the 2020/21 campaign, Beale will have a real star on his hands. Across 45 matches during that title-winning season, the Romanian scored eight goals and registered 15 assists – with 15 of these contributions coming in the league as the Gers strolled to success.

Soccer Football – Europa League – Round of 32 Second Leg – Rangers v Royal Antwerp – Ibrox, Glasgow, Scotland, Britain – February 25, 2021 Rangers’ Ianis Hagi during the warm up before the match Pool via REUTERS/Russell Cheyne

The Rangers Review journalist Joshua Barrie was full of praise for Hagi, lauding him as “impressive” while praising his ability to “split” teams open with his wide range of passing and creative talents.

Although perhaps not yet at his best since returning to the first-team fold, the 24-year-old has managed to succeed with 83% of his attempted dribbles and win 71% of his total duels across his six league appearances this term, and as his fitness improves, he will continue to get better and hopefully return to the form he showed pre-injury.

Should the manager be looking to take someone out of the firing line then the man Hagi replaced in the win over Celtic, Rabbi Matondo, could be a good bet.

He has shown flashes of brilliance this term, albeit in limited spells, and was dragged off with 20 minutes remaining of that Old Firm tie having made just five passes in the entire game, a damning indictment of his qualities.

Beale must unleash him today in order to allow him to showcase his talents, and he could well run Hibs' defence ragged.
