Everton: Ex-BBC man drops Coady claim

Everton have been backed to complete the permanent signing of Conor Coady ‘now’ by former BBC pundit Noel Whelan.

The Lowdown: Permanent fee revealed

The centre-back joined the Toffees on a season-long loan from Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers over the summer, and has enjoyed an impressive start to life at Goodison Park.

The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath and John Percy recently revealed that Frank Lampard’s side will only have to cash out £4.5m to maintain his services beyond this campaign, and the Old Gold don’t have the option to recall the 29-year-old in January.

The Latest: Whelan’s message to Everton

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan urged Everton to complete the deal for Coady and claimed that he could go on to become a key man on Merseyside in years to come. He said:

“It’s a no-brainer.

“If you’re going to trigger that, then do it now. He’s already proven his point.

“We can see how valuable he is already in that back line. Him and Tarkowski have grown a really good relationship and they’ve got two leaders there.

“They’re talking and organising.

“Coady has got international experience and quality, and that is nothing for someone who can be at the club for at least another three years.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-8/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Absolute bargain

Everton signing Coady permanently is something that the club shouldn’t even have to think twice about considering the instant impact he’s made.

Before their match against Manchester United this evening, the England international was averaging 5.4 clearances per top-flight game and already has a goal and assist to his name in just seven starts (WhoScored).

Lampard has already asked the board to complete the deal, so it shouldn’t be too long before an official announcement is made.

Aston Villa struck gold on Matty Cash

Despite the pressure he is facing at the moment, Steven Gerrard has brought some genuine quality to Aston Villa during his time as manager.

The likes of Boubacar Kamara, Diego Carlos and Philippe Coutinho are all at the club on a permanent basis following summer moves, and with such talent at their disposal, Villa should really be sitting higher than the 16th position they currently occupy in the Premier League table.

Gerrard inherited a squad which contained Ollie Watkins, Leon Bailey and Tyrone Mings, but it is right-back Matty Cash on whom the club have really hit the jackpot.

Aston Villa struck gold with Matty Cash

The defender was signed by former Villa boss Dean Smith in 2020 for a fee of £14m from then-Championship side Nottingham Forest, and the Poland international has settled into life in the top flight with ease.

He played 28 league matches in his first season at Villa Park, helping the side to keep ten clean sheets and completing 67% of his attempted dribbles, showcasing his attacking intent down the right-hand side whenever possible.

Cash started every league game last season and had seven goal contributions (four goals, three assists) while also displaying his excellent defensive attributes, making 2.3 tackles (second in the squad) and 1.3 interceptions per match (first in the squad) as he became one of the first names on Gerrard’s team sheet.

The £65k-per-week defender has also made a splash on international level, making his debut for Poland in 2021, and he could be set to feature at the upcoming World Cup.

Speaking on Soccer Saturday in January 2020, Sky Sports pundit Matt Murray hailed Cash as a “quality” player, and this was before he made the move to the Premier League.

With CIES Football Observatory valuing the player at €35m (£30.4m), it represents more than double what Villa paid just over two years ago, with the player now worth 118% more than his 2020 transfer fee.

Cash is still only 25 and has a couple of years left before he even hits the peak of his powers. By that stage, Villa could well make a fortune on the player.

Wolves: Beale now prime manager candidate

Wolverhampton Wanderers are believed to have identified Queen’s Park Rangers boss Michael Beale as the man to replace Bruno Lage at Molineux, according to the latest reports.

What’s the word?

As per esteemed journalist David Ornstein, the 42-year-old is now the Midlands outfit’s first choice target to fill the club’s managerial vacancy, having relieved Lage of his duties just over two weeks ago.

Writing on Twitter about that latest development, the respected insider stated: “Wolves have made Michael Beale 1st choice to become next boss. WWFC expected to move fast & contact anticipated between clubs to discuss release. Would be seen as a progressive, exciting appointment + break from previous mould.”

In his attached piece for The Athletic, Ornstein suggested that the Old Gold are said to have been ‘extremely impressed by his work, reputation and references’, while also revealing that the Englishman’s current contract at Loftus Road includes a release clause.

Special at Molineux

While it may come as something of a left-field choice considering the Bromley-born man’s relative inexperience – having only taken on his first-ever managerial job with the R’s this summer – as Ornstein alluded to, it is certainly an ‘exciting’ and bold appointment.

Recent days had seen links to former Lyon boss Peter Bosz, albeit with there notable reservations regarding the Dutchman, with the 58-year-old having been deemed “not good enough” in recent times by journalist Julien Laurens amid his fresh departure from the Ligue 1 outfit.

The beauty of appointing a figure such as Beale is that the coaching visionary has not been burned by previous bad experiences as a manager, having also honed his craft as a coach over the years, after previously working in the academy set-up at both Chelsea and Liverpool.

The promising figure has also gained valuable experience in recent years having acted as assistant manager to Steven Gerrard at both Rangers and at Aston Villa, having also previously taken on the same role for Brazilian outfit, Sao Paulo.

Lauded as a “genius” by former Gers striker Jermain Defoe, Beale has also been on the receiving end of glowing praise from the aforementioned Gerrard in recent times, with the former England international stating that what his colleague does on the training ground is “really quite special”.

That coaching quality has been evident in his relatively brief tenure at his current club thus far, with the west London outfit firmly in the mix for promotion having found themselves in the play-off places at present.

To be able to poach such an impressive, up-and-coming manager could be a real coup for those back at Molineux, with it potentially worth the risk to take a gamble on a special rising star, rather than a potentially fading force such as Bosz.

Rangers eye goalkeeper January signing

Glasgow Rangers reportedly now have ‘significant’ funds available to sign a first-team goalkeeper in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Goalkeeper conundrum

The Ibrox outfit have three goalkeepers in their senior squad at the moment, but two of them are 40 and 35 years of age respectively in Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin.

Robbie McCrorie is the other, but the 24-year-old has only ever made two first-team appearances for the Gers, and none so far this season.

The Latest: January signing?

As per Football Insider, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team have now set aside ‘significant’ funds for a new goalkeeper signing, and could do a deal in January.

They are ‘prioritising’ a move for a ‘proven’ shot-stopper, after previously extending McGregor and McCrorie’s contracts.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-5/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: McGregor replacement?

As much of a servant as McGregor has been to the club, the Light Blues need to start looking to the future with him at 40 and McLaughlin not far behind at 35.

Given his contract extension, McCrorie should be expected to be given more opportunities in the first team, and so the Teddy Bears will need another ‘keeper’ to compete with him long-term.

Nonetheless, setting aside ‘significant’ funds suggests that the club are going to look to target a new number one, and so perhaps we could see a complete overhaul of the position in 2023 with McCrorie moving into the deputy role.

Leeds: Kieran Maguire makes takeover claim

Financial expert Kieran Maguire believes that there could be an ‘earnout agreement’ at Leeds United over a potential takeover from the 49ers Enterprises.

The Lowdown: Option to take full control

The 49ers Enterprises currently hold a 44% stake at Elland Road after Andrea Radrizzani initially sold them a 10% stake back in 2018.

A full takeover is a possibility, with the 49ers having the option to take full control from Radrizzani in a deal worth in excess of £400m.

The American giants only have until January 2024 to exercise their option, though, and Maguire has given his thoughts on a potential takeover.

The Latest: Maguire’s comments

Maguire, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to Football Insider regarding the prospect of the 49ers taking full control in Yorkshire.

He said that they are ‘bearing their time’ but hinted that an ‘earnout agreement’, a contractual provision which dictates that the seller is entitled to future compensation, could be in place with Radrizzani.

“The 49ers are bearing their time when it comes to any potential acquisition of Leeds.

“They are waiting to see how the clubs beds in as far as its contribution to the Premier League is concerned.

“There are probably some earnout agreement that they have with Radrizzani which will help to determine the price ultimately paid.

“The 49ers are prepared to be patient. If they have got a fixed price already agreed upon then there is no downside from their point of view in awaiting further developments.”

The Verdict: This season key?

The Whites failed to back up a promising first season back in the Premier League and managed to survive a real relegation scare on the final day of the 2021/22 campaign.

It looks as if the Whites may well be in line for another battle at the bottom under Jesse Marsch, however, if they can stay clear of the drop zone, the 49ers may look to take full control over the summer.

Therefore, it could be a crucial 10-month period at Elland Road both on and off the pitch, as Leeds look to take the next step in the top flight.

Spurs: Paratici could seal Skriniar bargain

Tottenham Hotspur could be handed the chance to bring Milan Skriniar to the Premier League on a free transfer next summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by 90min, who claim that, with the centre-back’s current deal at Inter Milan set to expire at the end of the current campaign, and with the 27-year-old being yet to put pen to paper on a new deal at the San Siro, Fabio Paratici could be given the chance to sign the Slovakia international on a pre-contract in January.

However, the report goes on to state that Inter’s CEO Beppe Marotta is hopeful of agreeing fresh terms with Skriniar prior to the break for the Qatar World Cup this winter. Meanwhile, the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be keeping a very close eye on the centre-back’s situation.

Regarding the future of the defender at the San Siro, Marotta said: “As far as Skriniar, who is absolutely top-class both on and off the pitch, I hope we can agree a new deal very much, and I’m very optimistic that the negotiations can reach a conclusion by November 13. The conditions look to be positive for me to say this.”

Conte’s dream

Considering just how heavily Spurs have been linked with Skriniar since Antonio Conte’s appointment at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last November, should Paratici manage to land the centre-back on a free transfer in January, it would undoubtedly be a dream deal for the Italian and the north London club.

Indeed, Skriniar was a rock at the heart of Conte’s title-winning Inter defence in 2020/21, with the £56.5m-rated talent helping his side to keep 12 clean sheets in his 32 Serie A appearances. He also averaged 1.5 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 2.7 clearances and won 3.5 duels (at a success rate of 52%) per game.

The £93k-per-week defender also chipped in for the Nerazzurri going forwards that season, scoring three goals during the campaign in addition to making 62.2 passes, 2.6 long balls and 0.3 key passes per game, demonstrating the 27-year-old’s ability to both play out from the back and launch counterattacks.

These returns saw the 54-cap international – who Tibor Goljan dubbed a “leader”, Siavoush Fallahi labelled a “monster” and Andy Castell tagged as “unreal” – average a very impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.07, ranking him as Conte’s seventh-best performer in Inter’s Scudetto-winning campaign.

Furthermore, with FBref ranking Skriniar in the top 3% of centre-backs in Europe’s big five leagues for passes completed per 90 – as well as the top 29% for dribbles completed, the top 25% for shots and the top 28% for shot-creating actions over the last 365 days – the Slovakian would very much appear to possess the forward-thinking mindset that Conte likes his defenders to have.

As such, considering the 53-year-old’s history of success with Skriniar, coupled with the 27-year-old appearing to be a perfect fit for Conte’s tactical set-up in north London, the signing of the player who was valued at €80m (£69.5m) this summer on a free transfer would undoubtedly represent something of a dream deal for the Italian coach.

Liverpool can fill Mane void in Kvaratskhelia

Liverpool head into the World Cup break amid a run of rare form in the 2022/23 campaign, having won their last four matches in all competitions.

The season could all change following the prestigious competition and who knows, there could well be some new signings on the horizon too.

What’s the word?

One of the players linked with Liverpool of late is a winger taking the European game by storm. That happens to be Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia with recent reports suggesting that the Reds and Chelsea are among the clubs interested.

The Georgian moved to Serie A just last summer for a fee of only £8.6m and now it’s thought he could cost a whopping £86m next year.

Offering his reaction to a potential deal, journalist Pete O’Rourke told Football FanCast that a move would enthuse the club’s manager, while suggesting he could be the man to finally replace Sadio Mane, who left a few months ago.

He said: “On paper you’ve got the likes of Kvaratskhelia, Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah in your side so it’s something that would really excite Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool fans of what those three could potentially do together.”

O’Rourke continued: “He’d help fill the void that Sadio Mane’s departure to Bayern Munich has left in that Liverpool attacking line up this season. He’s been sorely missed on numerous occasions so I think Kvaratskhelia would be somebody who could come in and really add to that Liverpool line up if they could pull off a deal for the Georgian.”

Mane-esque

It was always going to be a tough ask to replace Mane with the Senegalese sensation scoring 120 times in Liverpool colours.

The 30-year-old was the man for the big occasion and the ultimate clutch player, scoring vital goals for Klopp during his stint in England.

Darwin Nunez has now started to impress, finding the net on seven occasions in his last ten outings, but there is still a feeling that they miss a rampant force on the left-hand side.

Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz might well prove to be the long-term solution but for now, they are sidelined through injury.

Irrespective of what the future holds for the Liverpool duo, Kvaratskhelia would be a remarkable signing. Such is his quality in the final third, he has beaten the goalkeeper eight times in 2022/23, while also registering ten assists.

What makes that record even more impressive is that five of those goal involvements came in the Champions League, including one against Liverpool. The 21-year-old showcased his quality first-hand against the Reds, with the Georgia international truly dominating a certain Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfield this month.

During that game, he performed a rather remarkable seven dribbles, of which three he was able to complete in their entirety.

It was that level of performance that evoked memories of Mane, with the Senegal international demonstrating during his time at Anfield that he could beat players for fun.

Also possessing pace and that magic, ruthless touch in front of goal, it makes for a dynamite combination of skills that can devastate defences.

If Liverpool can get a deal across the line, it would be impressive business. Over to you Julian Ward and FSG.

Villa: Unai Emery eyeing Nacho Fernandez

An update has emerged on Aston Villa and their interest in adding a central defender to their squad during the January transfer window…

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Unai Emery has his eye on Real Madrid centre-back Nacho Fernandez after failing to sign him whilst he was the manager of Villarreal.

The report claims that the ex-Arsenal head coach is now looking at the enforcer again as a potential target for Villa heading into his first window in charge of the club.

It is stated that Fernandez is considering his future with Carlo Ancelotti’s team due to his lack of game time on the pitch this season, with his contract due to expire at the end of the campaign.

Upgrade on Ezri Konsa

Emery could land an upgrade on current Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa by swooping for the Spain international, whether that is on a cut-price deal in January or on a free transfer in the summer.

Fernandez, who turns 33 in January, could be an excellent addition to bolster the defensive ranks in the short term, whilst using his experience and quality to help the younger defenders at the club develop their own performances.

In the immediate future, he could be a better option for Emery than Konsa. The former Brentford stopper endured a difficult 2021/22 campaign as he averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.74 across 29 Premier League appearances, completing 86% of his attempted passes and winning 64% of his individual duels.

Meanwhile, the Spanish ace averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.95 in 28 outings in La Liga for Real Madrid, winning 56% of his battles and completing 93% of his passes.

The £129k-per-week enforcer, who former manager Zinedine Zidane hailed as being “important” whenever he plays, has the quality to perform at a higher standard than the Englishman on a consistent basis, whilst he could also be a more reliable option in possession based on their respective passing statistics.

Fernandez has made 3.24 tackles and interceptions per 90 in Europe’s top five leagues and European competitions over the last 365 days. Whereas Konsa has averaged 1.65 tackles and interceptions per 90 in the same time and this indicates that the Spaniard reads the game better than the current Villa man and is, therefore, more likely to cut out opposition attacks.

Emery must now push for the club to snap up the Real Madrid defender in January as his statistics since the start of last season suggest that he would be a sizeable upgrade on what he currently has to work with on the right side of the defence.

Everton transfer news on Keane, Kean

Transfer expert Dean Jones says that both Michael Keane and Moise Kean are ‘heading towards the exit door’ at Everton.

The Lowdown: Out of favour

Keane has only played a mere 22 minutes in the Premier League so far this season, having fallen behind summer arrivals Conor Coady and James Tarkowski in the centre-back pecking order on Merseyside.

Meanwhile, Kean has not played at Goodison Park since obligation to buy him at the end of this season.

The Latest: Double exit?

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones says that Keane and Kean are ‘heading towards the exit door’ at the Toffees in 2023:

“Yeah, I mean, they’re definitely looking. They’re open to Michael Keane leaving, from what I’m told.

“We’ll probably see both Keane and Kean leaving in 2023 because Moise Kean will end up leaving permanently as well.

“I think it’s natural that both of those are heading towards the exit door at the moment.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-8/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Get rid

Given his lack of minutes, and the fact that Frank Lampard’s team signed Coady and Tarkowski in the summer, they can afford to let Keane go with sufficient cover in the central defensive area.

On £80,000-per-week as well, Keane is one of the Blues’ higher earners in the squad (FBRef), and so getting him off the wage books would help potentially fund one or two signings in the January transfer window.

As for Kean, he was earning just over £53,000-per-week at Everton before his loan move, and so losing him would also free up space on the wage bill, on top of the transfer fee they will receive for his departure. The striker only managed four goals in 39 games for the Toffees, and so will not be a big loss.
