Ravi Bopara eyes England T20 recall after Sussex move opens up franchise opportunities

Allrounder claims he is ‘better equipped than ever before’ in T20 cricket and opens up on Essex exit

Matt Roller17-Oct-2019Ravi Bopara hopes that his move to Sussex will be the first step in his plan to reboot his England career in time for the T20 World Cup via the global franchise circuit, and feels that he is “better equipped than ever before” in the shortest format.Bopara ended an 18-year association with Essex on Wednesday as he joined Sussex on a two-year deal which will allow him more flexibility as to which leagues he plays than he was afforded at Chelmsford, in a move that head coach Jason Gillespie described as “a bit of a coup”.Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Bopara revealed his plan to “give himself the best possible shot in T20″ over the next few years, and opened up on the reasons behind his Essex exit.”It’s a massive opportunity for me,” Bopara said. “I’m not giving up red-ball cricket, but I want to take the opportunity to really focus on T20 cricket for now and see how far I can get. I think I can really improve my T20 games and take it to the next level.Bopara, 34, last played for England at the 2015 World Cup, but admitted that he has “had thoughts” of a recall for the T20 World Cup in Australia next year.”That’d be amazing,” he said. “The players in the squad now absolutely deserve their spots – they’re doing an amazing job for England. But there’s no harm putting pressure on them, putting a bit of competition in there, and giving myself a goal.”His grand plan to return to the international set-up involves playing in “each and every league I can possibly go to,” while he hopes that the “tough, hard cricket” played in them does not get ignored.”People are taking notice of overseas leagues,” he said. “More English players are drifting into those leagues and performing on different surfaces. I can tell you now – playing in those leagues is really hard. It’s tough cricket. You’re playing on wickets that are often not great, and it’s tough to get runs on them. The pressure’s on: you’re one of the three or four overseas players, you’re expected to perform and win games.”The more T20 cricket I can play in, the better. I don’t like having time off – I don’t enjoy it. A lot of people like going on holiday or whatever, by I don’t – I like playing cricket, working on something new, and seeing it work.”Bopara also revealed the details of his exit from his boyhood club Essex, and highlighted a mid-summer period when he was left out of the side for “non-cricketing reasons” as a flashpoint.Essex were unhappy with his request to miss part of the Championship run-in to play in the aborted Euro T20 Slam, and after some “difficult conversations” with captain Simon Harmer about his role in the side, he was dropped to the Second XI in July.ALSO READ: ‘Needed to prove Bopara wrong to make him believe’ – HarmerHe smashed an unbeaten 122 from 50 balls against Somerset in that Second XI T20 competition, but reflected that it was “always going to be tough to put numbers in front of people when I was being left out for non-cricketing reasons.”There was a lot going on at the time,” he said. “It was really bad timing. When you’re out the side, you’ve got to make plans to play cricket. You can’t just sit around doing nothing – that’s no value to anyone. I really wanted to play, whatever it took.Bopara whacked 219 runs for once out at a strike rate of 175 in Essex’s five must-win games on their way to the Blast title•Getty Images”I was out of the side at that time and it wasn’t looking great. I was told it wasn’t for cricketing reasons, and I was told my mind wasn’t in the right place. I really strongly disagreed with it, as you can imagine. But that’s life – you experience everything once in your lifetime.”[Harmer and I] are still good mates – I spoke to him yesterday about the South African league [the Mzansi Super League] saying I couldn’t wait to see him out there.”I’m really going to miss playing at Essex. It’s very sad to be leaving my boyhood club. It would have been nice to get a longer-term deal, but I understand it from the club’s point of view too. Essex is a great club, and there’s great people there from top to bottom. They’ve given me a great 18 years. But I have to emphasise how excited I am about my future now: Sussex have presented me with a fantastic opportunity.”While Bopara admitted that his role as finisher in Essex’s Blast side “worked out” in the end, as he starred with the bat in five must-win games as they crept up the blindside on their way to their maiden T20 trophy, he maintained that he wants to bat higher up the order in future.ALSO READ: Essex ride their luck to run off with T20 spoils”I know 20 or 25 balls can make a big impact on a game,” he said, “but I always see myself as a run-scorer. Why not try and give me the opportunity to let me face 45 or 50 balls, and see what I can do? My game has moved forward over the past year.”People say 100 games is experience, but I promise you… you’ve got so much more to learn from there to [when you’ve played] 200 games, to 300 games. You’re going to change so much in that time, and come across so many situations in games. I’ve changed my batting, and the way I approach it. I’m changing my bowling now as well, because I’ve got the time to do it.

Bopara faces a serious task to get back into the England set-up more than five years after his last T20I, but his plan to press his case begins in earnest on November 9, when he will make his debut for Durban Heat in the MSL. From there, he plans to enter the draft for each and every T20 league that he can find, and he is certain to be picked up in the draft for The Hundred this Sunday.”I’ve always taken an approach where I knew I could hit a clean ball and I could hit sixes, but I feel like I can do it more often and more consistently now. I’ve opened up more areas too. I never used to look through the off side in T20 – I thought ‘drag it to leg, and it goes for six’ – but I’ve moved away from that. I look at extra cover, behind point, dead-straight over the bowler’s head. I’m working on hitting the ball behind myself as well, trying to open up all areas, 360 degrees.”I’m not saying I’m complete – you’ll still struggle in some games against certain bowlers, that’s the reality of the sport. But I feel like I’m better equipped today than I have ever been before.”

Selector Bailey ready to talk the talk

His new role as national selector will demand communication and dialogue with players and Bailey’s track record suggests he can deliver on that front

Daniel Brettig05-Dec-2019Communication has been the word on almost everyone’s lips when it came to the decision to make George Bailey a selector alongside the selection chairman Trevor Hohns and the national team coach Justin Langer. It is an area in which, it is widely acknowledged, things need to improve between players and panel. It is also an area that has been subject to discussion for much of the past decade, ever since omitted players began to grumble that feedback along the lines of “get more runs” or “take more wickets” was not going to cut it anymore. This is a societal shift as much as it is one for cricket to face, and Bailey has been dealing in this changing environment for all of the aforementioned decade and beyond. Something that Bailey has gleaned from his years as a player, captain and selector at state and – briefly – national level when he was captain and selector in the Australia ODI team before the role was taken out of the on-field leader’s purview in 2013, is that the conversation needs to be more constant.”Sometimes that won’t be easy. I have had that in the past as a captain and selector of Tasmania and have seen the beginning and endings of careers of some of my absolutely closest mates and I’ve learned a lot through that process,” Bailey told “The one thing is I think it’s a constant dialogue, when you’re communicating well it’s not something that pops up and hasn’t been broached at some stage to some level before.”Secondly the player, particularly when they’re your mates, they’re big enough and ugly enough to deal with honesty… I think that’s the crux of any sort of selector-player relationship, if there’s a level of respect and a level of honesty there, then yep I can deal with disappointment and people feeling they should be in a position.”But if you start with that as your first point of call and your last point of call, the respect that the player has given their absolute all to play for their country and it’s a huge part of their life and deal with them really honestly, then I think it’ll be alright in the long run.”ALSO READ: Bailey ready for ‘tough conversations’ as selectorUnlike a lot of selectors who have been part of the national panel in the past, Bailey begins with an example of this sort of ongoing dialogue and respect already published and out in the world. It is drawn from the diary written by Ed Cowan, describing the 2010-11 domestic season in which he was an established member of Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield and 50-over sides but surplus to Twenty20 requirements. This account of feedback from captain or selector to fringe player is from long enough ago to have taken place in the last season before the big Bash League, but its frankness and empathy is of the kind most players increasingly demand in 2019. Cowan begins by sharing his correspondence to Bailey, on Tuesday January 4, intended as a primer to a face-to-face chat they were due to have:A couple days later, Bailey responds, fully and frankly to his squad mate’s queries:Cowan goes on to write that he has been left with views that are, “Fair-minded, thoughtful, and compassionate but managed to be firm and did not offer false hope. Above all, it was honest; as a player, I know I appreciate that more than anything else.”ALSO READ: Nobody doubts the decision – Finch on Bailey’s appointmentIn many ways, this is the kind of exchange that it is hoped Bailey will be able to fashion more often for the players he will be casting judgment on as soon as this edition of the Big Bash League ends, and he has been blunt in stating that it will not only be useful but more or less mandatory, combined as it is with an increasingly globalised cricket economy.”One of the things I have noticed over the last few years as I’ve transitioned from a younger player into a more senior player, and seen a generation of younger cricketers come through, and chatting to my mates in the real world as well, is that I think there’s a different expectation around communication for players these days,” he said. “They want to be kept abreast and given more information. CA have access to some much data that we’re able to share that with players and keep them up to date a little more often.”With the advent of T20 and the amount of coaches and players that are now playing with players from other nations and coaching with people from other nations, a lot of that information we used to think was perhaps unique is now being shared, so its all well and good having access to great data, but asking the right questions becomes really important and then once you’ve actually got it, that’s where I think the opportunity to use what we’ve traditionally called gut feel, but to use your imagination and creativity and put your own stamp on things comes to the fore.”Bailey, then, will be entering an evermore complicated field as far as selection and player management is concerned. In his favour, however, is a written record of thinking and operating that was arguably a few years ahead of its time.

Contact made: Nottingham Forest in move to sign "amazing" new £40m striker

After defeat against Aston Villa highlighted Nottingham Forest’s lack of firepower without Chris Wood, the Champions League hopefuls have now reportedly made contact over a deal to sign an impressive Manchester United target.

Nottingham Forest's search for a striker goes on

It may come as a surprise that those at the City Ground have set their sights on an attacking reinforcement, but as good as Wood is there is no denying that he won’t be at the peak of his powers for much longer. At 33 years old, the New Zealand international has shocked the Premier League by scoring as many as 18 goals to help his side edge closer and closer to Champions League qualification.

Without their star striker, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were always likely to struggle, but that won’t take away from the disappointment of defeat at Villa Park on Saturday evening.

Speaking about the defeat, Espirito Santo told reporters: “We didn’t start well, Aston Villa controlled our chances. The second half was different, we had the chances but we couldn’t score. The first half was not good, we were not organised.

“We tried to find solutions. The boys showed a better game. It was one of the matches that we created the most in but didn’t take anything from the game. When you lose, you don’t recover so well. The miles come to your mind. It’s always easy when you are in a good moment. Now it is not so good and it requires a bit of patience.”

Meanwhile, when asked for an update on the likes of Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi, the Forest boss said: “I don’t know [when they will be back]. It is going to be day-to-day. He [Taiwo Awoniyi] felt something in his hamstring.”

In the final stretch towards Champions League qualification, Forest will now be desperate to get over the line and turn their attention towards summer reinforcements.

Nottingham Forest make contact to sign Mateta

One striker who would instantly solve Espirito Santo’s pending striker problem is an option who has been in excellent form this season. According to Rudy Galetti for TeamTalk, Nottingham Forest have now made contact over a potential deal to sign Jean-Philippe Mateta, who Crystal Palace value at around £40m ahead of this summer.

Jean-Philippe Mateta for Crystal Palace.

The Frenchman has also attracted the interest of Manchester United and did nothing to harm his chances of earning a big move in the coming months this weekend, scoring a stunning goal against rivals Brighton & Hove Albion. Dubbed “amazing” by Oliver Glasner earlier in the campaign, Mateta looks unlikely to slow down anytime soon.

Scoring his 16th goal of the season in all competitions, Mateta has almost gone stride for stride with Wood for goals throughout the current campaign and could now emerge as an ideal candidate to replace the Forest star this summer.

Huge upgrade on Merino: Berta wants Arsenal to sign £55m "goal machine"

Here’s a not particularly original statement: Arsenal should probably sign a striker!

The Gunners’ Premier League title hopes have been over for a while now, and it’s their lack of attacking firepower that supporters want to see addressed in the summer.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Brentford was the 22nd time in all competitions Mikel Arteta’s team have scored either zero or one goal in a match, doing so in a whopping 50% of their Premier League fixtures.

Thus, do the Gunners lead the race for one of Europe’s most sought-after centre-forwards?

Which striker are Arsenal seeking to sign?

According to a report by Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are hoping to complete the signing of Sporting Clube de Portugal striker Viktor Gyökeres, who he believes will be available for as little as £55m this summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

David Ornstein and James McNicholas of the Athletic previously reported that the Gunners have ‘developed a strong interest’ in the Swedish international striker, with recently appointed new sporting director Andrea Berta described as a long-term admirer.

They add that Arteta’s preference would actually be to sign Gyökeres’ international teammate Alexander Isak, but Newcastle United ‘have no intention’ of selling their most-prized asset, let alone to a direct rival.

So, could Gyökeres be the final piece in the jigsaw?

How Gyokeres would improve Arsenal's attack

Both Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are currently sidelined long-term; the Brazilian ruptured his ACL against Manchester United in the FA Cup in January, while the German required hamstring surgery after suffering this injury during the warm-weather training camp in Dubai.

However, despite scoring 29 goals for the club, Havertz was never supposed to be Arsenal’s striker, initially signed as a midfielder.

Jesus, meantime, simply has not been the same since suffering a knee injury against Cameroon at the last World Cup, as the table below outlines.

As the table outlines, Jesus simply cannot be counted upon due to fitness reasons and is unlikely to feature again until Christmas, so he cannot be in Arteta’s immediate plans.

As a result, for now, Mikel Merino is spearheading Arsenal’s attack, his stunning strike against Real Madrid last Tuesday actually his eighth for the club, six of which have come since becoming the emergency striker at Leicester in February.

Nevertheless, Gyökeres would be a clear upgrade on the Spaniard, as his remarkable statistics at Sporting prove.

Gyökeres’ statistics at Sporting are obviously frightening, hence why Romano has labeled him a “goal machine”, adding that he is “wanted by several clubs for the summer”.

Meanwhile, Ben Mattinson of Breaking the Lines believes the Swede is a ‘clinical finisher with great movement’, also impressed by his ‘link-up play, physicality…. [and] top-quality ball-striking’.

Speaking on the Arsecast Extra, Andrew Mangan claims Gyökeres would represent a ‘win now’ signing, which is exactly what Arsenal are attempting to do, hence why they should push the boat out to make this move happen. He’s be a phenomenal upgrade on their current options.

Man Utd think they'll convince £64m striker to join them instead of Chelsea

Manchester United now expect to complete the transfer of an “unplayable” striker target who Chelsea have already made a bid for, according to a new report.

Man Utd chasing reinforcements ahead of busy summer

This summer is expected to be a busy time for the Red Devils – several contracts are up and plenty more players are expected to depart, as Ruben Amorim tries to put a squad together that suits his system and his system only.

Christian Eriksen looks set to leave United, and there are still doubts over whether Casemiro will remain beyond the summer. Both players leaving would open the door for a new midfielder at least, and United have their eyes on one or two players they would like to sign. Over the weekend, the Red Devils were linked with a move for Napoli midfielder Stanislav Lobotka, who would be able to leave the Italian side for £34 million.

edson-alvarez-ajax-premier-league-chelsea-transfers

Lobotka is not the only Napoli midfielder United could sign, as they have been offered the chance to sign Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, who is set to become a free agent in the summer. United are not alone in the race, as Manchester City have also been offered the chance to sign the player via his entourage.

Meanwhile, the Premier League side are also keeping a close eye on Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who has established himself as one of the best midfielders in Serie A. The Brazilian could also be available for a relatively low fee.

Man Utd expect Gyokeres to pick them over Chelsea

Signing a new midfielder may have to wait until United have addressed their forward options, as Amorim is desperate to sign a new striker to end the misery in front of goal. According to Football Insider, Man United are now confident they are going to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP this summer.

Sporting CP's ViktorGyokerescelebrates scoring their third goal to complete his hat-trick

The report states that United have been working hard in the background to reach an agreement, and they are now in a good position to complete the transfer of Gyokeres. The Sweden international is considered a top target at Old Trafford and has been since Amorim was appointed head coach.

United will hope securing Champions League football by winning the Europa League will give them the advantage they need, as Chelsea have made a bid worth £64 million for Gyokeres already, and they are yet to know if they will be playing in Europe’s biggest competition. It is believed Amorim’s relationship with the forward has swung it in United’s favour, and they are now confident it’s a “done deal”.

Gyokeres, who has been dubbed “unplayable” by former teammate Maxime Biamou, has scored a staggering 38 goals in 30 Liga Portugal games this season, as well as a further six in the Champions League. United may hold another advantage in the race for Gyokeres, as the Swedish striker has the same agent as current United defender Victor Lindelof.

"Very good" £3 million Brendan Rodgers signing now wants to leave Celtic

Celtic are in the market for reinforcements this summer, though may have to sanction a departure once the window opens following an admission from one of Brendan Rodgers’ signings.

Celtic hold Glasgow Derby parity as focus shifts elsewhere

Despite having several regulars out due to injury concerns, Celtic managed to claim a respectable 1-1 draw against Rangers at Ibrox last week to maintain their 17-point advantage at the Scottish Premiership summit.

Brendan Rodgers has already led his side to a fourth successive league title and had little to prove at the home of their trophyless rivals, though he did manage to stop an unwanted scenario of three Glasgow Derby defeats in a row.

Nevertheless, Celtic will now focus on their upcoming Scottish Cup final against Aberdeen before a summer of intrigue could yield movement in both directions at Parkhead.

Per reports, the Bhoys are known admirers of Sarpsborg winger Sondre Orjasaeter, but it remains to be seen if they will return to the table for him once the window opens.

Western United defender Dylan Leonard has admitted he would love to join Celtic, even if he would likely be a developmental addition for years to come as opposed to a first-team starter.

Champions League league phase involvement isn’t guaranteed, with Rodgers’ men having to navigate the final qualifying round. They are yet to know if they will be seeded or not in their quest to secure a place, which means they will need to kickstart their summer business early to allow a bedding-in period for prospective arrivals.

In turn, departures will be needed to supplement new faces, and they may have found a prime candidate to move on after they admitted they would like to leave Parkhead.

Gustaf Lagerbielke makes Celtic exit admission

Speaking about his future, Gustaf Lagerbielke has admitted he wants to leave Celtic for FC Twente permanently after spending the campaign on loan at the Eredivisie outfit.

He stated: “If we make it into Europe, Twente will have more money to spend. The same applies if Twente sells players in the summer. So it’s up to the technical directors of Celtic and Twente to reach an agreement about me.

“I want to play and I feel good in the Netherlands. I can certainly imagine my future being here.”

Signed for £3 million by Rodgers in 2023, Lagerbielke never really got the opportunity to set the heather alight at Parkhead, making only ten appearances in total last season. Labelled “very good” by former teammate Johan Larsson, he has clearly found some sort of footing in Dutch football and may have given Celtic a platform to recoup some of their outlay for his services.

Moves don’t always work out, but his regular involvement with FC Twente should be enough to drum up enough interest even if they choose not to make his deal permanent.

Manager "would accept" £190k-per-week contract to join Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur are on the lookout for potential Ange Postecoglou replacements ahead of next season, according to reports, with the Australian’s future uncertain despite their journey to the Europa League final.

Ange Postecoglou could leave even if Spurs win Europa League

Following a disastrous domestic campaign where Spurs have already matched their all-time record for most defeats in a single Premier League season (19), Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy is very much pondering Postecoglou’s long-term future.

ByEmilio Galantini May 9, 2025

Injuries took their toll on a ravaged Spurs squad that was forced to cope without a plethora of key players at one point, which undoubtedly played a role in their poor form, but 16th in the table after 19 defeats so far is quite simply not good enough for a ‘big six’ side.

As a result, credible media sources like The Telegraph’s Matt Law are reporting that Postecoglou could still leave Tottenham, even if Spurs end their 17-year wait for major silverware by winning the Europa League final.

Tottenham will face Man United in Bilbao later this month to determine which of the under-performing English sides will save their season, win a trophy and qualify for the Champions League.

However, considering this still may not be enough to save Postecoglou, there are many rumoured candidates in the running to replace him.

One of them is Fulham boss Marco Silva, who is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract and could leave if any club pays his £8 million release clause. Some outlets are also reporting that Silva has rejected Fulham’s first offer of a new contract, potentially giving the north Londoners hope they could tempt him to N17.

As per Sky Sports reporter Gianluca Di Marzio, Silva is now the “first name” on Tottenham’s list to replace Postecoglou, overtaking the likes of Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth) and Thomas Frank (Brentford).

Marco Silva 'would accept' £190,000-per-week deal to join Tottenham

Following other reports that the 47-year-old would also be open to joining Tottenham (Pete O’Rourke), former Spurs scout and Levy employee Bryan King has shared what he believes would be enough to lure the tactician.

Indeed, King believes that Silva “would accept” a £190,000-per-week contract to join Tottenham, ideally running for three years.

“I think Silva would want a three-year deal to manage Tottenham,” King said to Football Insider.

“You can start thinking of the figures, probably £10m a year. If I were the manager at Fulham, and Spurs came looking, I would just have to see what has gone on before me to see the managers who haven’t been given a chance.

Fulham managerMarcoSilva

“Therefore, Silva will want at least a three-year deal, and he will want to be well-paid, £10m a year would be a starting figure. I would think he would accept the job under those terms, and I would think he would want to bring his staff with him as well.

“At least five backroom staff, which means people would be losing their jobs at Tottenham, which I don’t think would be a bad thing because some of those guys have been there too long.”

The ex-Everton boss has arguably overachieved at Craven Cottage this season, briefly contending for Champions League qualification despite his lack of resources compared to other top sides, and this will undoubtedly play into Levy’s thinking.

Bid made: Derby County make offer for 23 y/o Eustace loves and get reply

Derby County secured their Championship status in dramatic fashion and could now strike in the market to land a talented defender, according to reports.

Derby County look forward after great Championship escape

John Eustace pulled off something of a minor miracle after arriving at Pride Park, taking Derby from seven points behind at one point to eventual safety on the final day of the Championship season.

Plenty of controversy came to light when the 45-year-old swapped Blackburn Rovers for a side in a dogfight to avoid being relegated to the third-tier of English football, but it all seems to have worked out in the end.

Derby County managerJohnEustaceand Jerry Yates

There has been plenty of speculation over what may come next as Eustace bids to provide an element of stability at the Rams, and he has now taken a major step in shaping the future of his squad following the release of Derby’s retained list for 2025/26.

Jeff Hendrick, Kemar Roofe and Conor Washington are among senior members of his group who won’t be offered new deals, paving the way for potential transfer activity over the coming weeks.

Derby County’s retained list – who still has a future at Pride Park?

Players released (not offered new deals upon expiry)

Tom Barkhuizen, Sonny Bradley, Tyrese Fornah, Jeff Hendrick, Rohan Luthra, Erik Pieters, Kemar Roofe, Conor Washington.

Players out of contract with discussions ongoing over futures

Craig Forsyth, Liam Thompson.

Loanees returning to parent clubs

Harrison Armstrong, Marcus Harness, David Ozoh, Nat Phillips, Jerry Yates.

Lincoln City midfielder Ethan Erhahon has emerged as a target for Eustace amid competition from Blackburn for his signature. Make no mistake, there will be mass changes at Derby and plenty of movement is set to take place.

Speaking of which, Derby have made an offer to bring a talented star to Pride Park this summer and have now received a reply.

O'Rourke: Derby receive reply to Cody Drameh offer

Taking to social media platform X, journalist Pete O’Rourke has confirmed that Derby have been knocked back in their attempts to land Hull City full-back Cody Drameh on loan after making an initial offer for the 23-year-old.

Eustace previously worked with the former Leeds United man at Birmingham City, calling the defender “top” in 2023 and is keen to be reunited with a familiar face, though he is also being targeted by Stade de Reims and Toulouse.

Labelled “fantastic” by Rob Edwards, Drameh registered a goal and an assist in 29 appearances this campaign as Hull narrowly staved off relegation in similar fashion to Derby.

Winning 49 tackles on league duty, the London-born man is a sought-after talent that still has room for development, though it remains to be seen whether the Tigers will be willing to let him go during the off-season.

Celtic could sign record-breaking star who'd be their next Giakoumakis

A new centre-forward could be on the cards for Celtic as they prepare for the upcoming summer transfer window, which officially opens for business next month.

The Scottish giants decided to cash in on one of their star forwards in the January transfer window when they allowed Kyogo Furuhashi to join Rennes on a permanent deal.

The Japan international, who scored 34 goals in all competitions in the 2022/23 campaign, moved on from Parkhead and the club did not opt to sign a direct replacement for him ahead of the second half of the season.

Celtic could land a domestic treble by beating Aberdeen in the SFA Cup final, which suggests that their form on the pitch has not been harmed by that decision.

However, Brendan Rodgers and his staff may want a longer-term solution to Kyogo’s exit when the summer transfer window opens for business, as Adam Idah is the only senior and recognised centre-forward at the club, alongside the versatile Daizen Maeda and young Johnny Kenny.

There is one former Celtic number nine who has recently made it clear that he would love to play for the Hoops again if the opportunity was there.

Former Celtic striker who would love to return to Parkhead

Greece international Giorgos Giakoumakis has revealed that he would be interested in playing in the green and white again, having left the club in 2023 to sign for Atlanta United in the MLS.

When asked if he would fit into the current team, the forward told the Daily Record: “You want to set the fire? I would love to play for Celtic again. I don’t know if that’s a utopia or if it could happen again – but who wouldn’t?”

Former Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis.

There is nothing to suggest that Celtic are considering, or even would consider, a move to bring the striker back to Glasgow, but he did enjoy an interesting first spell at Paradise after joining from VVV-Venlo in the summer of 2021.

Giakoumakis was never a nailed-on starter who was in the XI week-in-week-out under Ange Postecoglou, as he preferred Kyogo Furuhashi in closer to a false nine role, but he performed admirably when given an opportunity.

As you can see in the table above, the Greek star almost averaged a goal every 90 minutes in the Premiership across his two seasons at the club, which speaks to how lethal he was in the final third when on the pitch.

Whilst Celtic may not be interested in a reunion with the experienced attacker, Rodgers could land his own version of Giakoumakis by swooping for one of the club’s reported transfer targets.

Celtic have interest in Scottish starlet

Last month, the Chronicle Live reported that Celtic are one of a number of clubs interested in signing Hearts centre-forward James Wilson in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The outlet claimed that Rangers and Celtic have both checked the teenage forward out, which suggests that they have sent scouts to watch the gem in action, whilst he has also played against both teams in the Premiership.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It revealed that Premier League side Newcastle United, who are currently vying for Champions League football, are also keen on the Scotland international.

However, the Chronicle Live did not reveal how much Hearts would actually demand for the young centre-forward if a team decided to come in with a formal approach for his services.

Whilst it remains to be seen whether or not Celtic are prepared to act upon their interest in Wilson, or if they would be able to convince him to turn down Newcastle to remain in Scotland, Rodgers must push for the club to seal a deal for the attacker because he could be Giakoumakis 2.0.

Why James Wilson could be Giakoumakis 2.0

Wilson could arrive at Parkhead as the manager’s own version of the Greek sensation because he is a clinical striker who can deliver goals without starting games on a regular basis.

Giakoumakis, as aforementioned, was excellent at scoring goals consistently without being a regular starter throughout his time in the Premiership, which made him such a valuable option for Postecoglou.

Rodgers already has Maeda and Idah available to him as starting-calibre centre-forward options, and Wilson could come in as the perfect squad option to be the third-choice striker.

At the age of 18, the Scottish youngster would come in as a promising talent with plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and grow, which is why starting out as an option off the bench could be the ideal role for him at this moment in his career.

The Hearts gem, dubbed a “live wire” in training by Neil Critchley, has also shown that he can be an effective player when called upon at Premiership level, having scored five goals from 4.9 xG in the division this season.

As you can see in the table above, Wilson has an impressive conversion rate of 23% in the Premiership, just shy of Giakoumakis’ 24% conversion rate in the league during his time at Celtic.

This shows that both strikers are clinical and effective forwards who can thrive without starting every single game, making them perfect squad options for the Hoops.

Aged 17 years and 288 days, Wilson became the youngest European scorer in Hearts history with a goal against Petroclub in the Conference League, and he became the youngest senior Scotland international ever at the age of 18 years and 17 days old with a cap against Greece earlier this year.

The record-breaking youngster is emerging as a hugely promising player in Scottish football, hence the links to Newcastle and Celtic, and that is why the Hoops should push to bring him to the club as their next Giakoumakis, with the potential for him to kick on even further in the future.

Rodgers could sign Celtic their new Giakoumakis in 25-goal sensation

Celtic’s pre-season plans are starting to take shape.

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Brendan Rodgers’ side will be heading to Northern Italy in late-July for a pre-season tournament between 23 and 27 July, with hosts Como, Dutch giants Ajax and recently crowned Asian champions Al-Ahli from Saudi Arabia also taking part.

The Hoops also have friendlies against Cork at Páirc Uí Chaoimh and Newcastle United at Parkhead in the diary beforehand, with Rodgers hoping to bolster his squad ahead of pre-season getting underway.

A new striker has been the priority ever since Kyōgo Furuhashi was sold to Stade Rennais in January, so are the Scottish Premiership champions about to land their man, a move reminiscent of that for a recent fans’ favourite; Giorgos Giakoumakis?

Giorgos Giakoumakis's Celtic career

Giakoumakis was not a Celtic player for a very long time, but he certainly made his mark in Glasgow.

During his 18-month stint at Parkhead, the Greece international scored 26 goals in just 57 appearances for the Hoops, thereby averaging a goal every 97 minutes, winning the Premiership golden boot during his only full season at the club.

However, after never being able to properly cement himself as the first-choice centre-forward, Giakoumakis departed for Atlanta United in February 2023 for a reported £4.3m fee.

A year later, he was sold to Mexican club Cruz Azul in a record-breaking £7.5m deal, part of the los Celestes squad that won the CONCACAF Champions Cup last Sunday, smashing Vancouver Whitecaps 5-0 in the final.

So now, four years after Giakoumakis first arrived in Glasgow, could the Celts finalise a very similar deal?

Celtic's striker search

As has been previously reported by ESPN Netherlands, Celtic are interested in signing striker Youssef El Kachati this summer.

The 25 year old was on fire for Dutch club Telstar this season, scoring 25 goals in all competitions, helping them gain promotion back to the Eredivisie for the first time since 1978, going up via the play-offs, in which El Kachati scored five goals in six appearances, dumping out ADO Den Haag, Den Bosch and then Willem II as recently as last weekend.

However, the Moroccan youth international will not be around for de Witte Leeuwen’s top division return in August, given that his contract expires this month, and he is not going to renew.

On top of this, as noted by Martin McMillan of the Glasgow Times, El Kachati has rejected the chance to join Zweite Bundesliga side Hannover 96, stating “I will make a fantastic step this summer”, with Anthony Evans of the Daily Record claiming the Celts are ‘supremely confident’ of securing his signature.

So, why would this move evoke memories of Giakoumakis’ arrival?

Well, the Greek centre-forward arrived in Glasgow for £2.5m in the summer of 2021 from VVV-Venlo, with whom he’d won the Eredivisie golden boot during his final season in the Netherlands, scoring 26 league goals, despite the fact the Yellow and Black Army were actually relegated.

Lorihanna Balabanova of Total Football Analysis praised Giakoumakis’ exceptional “positioning” and movement, outlining how he uses his physicality to his advantage.

Well, similarly, writer Martin Bjerke believes that El Kachati “combines physical presence with dynamic movement”, labelling him “technically gifted” as well as a “reliable offensive outlet”, which sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

So, let’s analyse how the two centre-forwards compare.

Worth stating first and foremost that, of course, Giakoumakis was plying his trade in the Eredivisie, while El Kachati did so in the Eerste Divisie last season.

According to Global Football Rankings, the Netherlands’ top division is the 12th strongest league in the world, while the Dutch second-tier comes in at 70th; for comparison, the Scottish Premiership is 43rd, while the SPFL Championship is actually 75th.

That caveat aside, El Kachati’s statistics are impressive, scoring more goals while also registering more shots as well as more shots on target per 90.

So, as Celtic search for centre-forward reinforcements this summer, the 25-year-old is surely worth a punt, given that he’s available for free.
