Celtic must seal January deal for Maeda

Things are looking increasingly on the up for Celtic under the leadership of Ange Postecoglou, with the Bhoys currently being on a run of five consecutive victories in all competitions.

However, should the Hoops boss wish to give his side the best possible chance of reclaiming their Premiership crown come the end of the season, it would appear wise for him to consider bringing in some fresh faces during the January transfer window.

Indeed, this is a belief which would appear to be shared by Postecoglou himself, with the manager recently revealing that he is already working on a number of deals ahead of the winter market.

Speaking about his January transfer plans, the 56-year-old said: “It’s no secret we still need to add to the squad. We were never going to do it in one transfer window, especially when you look at the significant exits we had.

“It was always going to be a two or three window process so we’re looking at January at the moment. We know the areas we need to bolster. It’s about getting more players that I believe can play the type of football we want to play. That’s what we’re trying to target. We will definitely be adding something to the squad.

“We’ve identified targets and begun discussions before we get to January so that we can conclude deals a lot quicker than we did in the previous window.”

Once such player Postecoglou is believed to have identified is Yokohama F Marinos centre-forward Daizen Maeda, with The Times reporting that Celtic already have a move lined up for the 24-year-old.

Considering how impressive the Japan international has been so far this season, it would indeed appear as if Maeda is a player for whom Michael Nicholson simply must secure a deal in January.

Indeed, over his 31 J-League appearances this term, the £990k-rated marksman has scored a whopping 17 goals, registered three assists and created three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking 2.4 shots and making 0.9 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the striker average a SofaScore match rating of 7.03, ranking him as Yokohama F Marinos’ 11th-best performer in the Japanese top flight.

As such, it seems clear to see that Maeda is a player who is more than capable of finding the back of the net on a regular basis. Also, with Celtic having parted ways with a prolific centre-forward in Odsonne Edouard, this summer, perhaps the 24-year-old can be the man to replace the Frenchman’s goals in the Celtic attack.

Jammu & Kashmir association want apology over player detention

Pundit tips Declan Rice to leave West Ham

West Ham star Declan Rice will leave the Hammers eventually in search of a bigger challenge, according to Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The Lowdown: Rice continues to shine

Rice has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past year or so, going from young hopeful to arguably one of the Premier League’s most impressive midfielders – he’s even being hailed as ‘better’ than Roy Keane at this age by Stuart Pearce.

The 22-year-old has not only shone for his club, however, becoming an undisputed key man for England and winning 27 caps to date.

Rice will again be a big player for West Ham this weekend, as Liverpool visit the London Stadium for a huge Premier League clash.

The Latest: Pundit makes big claim

Someone who believes Rice’s future lies away from the Hammers is former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor.

Speaking to Football Insider, he claimed that the Englishman will want to be playing Champions League football soon – something the Hammers are unlikely to be able to offer:

“He’ll love it there. For me, it’s a similar situation to Jack Grealish. Loves the club, loves playing there and enjoys his football but if you’re not getting into the Champions League, he’s going to leave. West Ham will have to sell him in the next couple of seasons.

“He won’t want to play in the Europa League, he’ll want to be in the big boy competitions with the likes of the Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool players.

“He starts for England, he’s a world-class midfielder. West Ham have now got a season to get into the top-four to keep him. If West Ham don’t get into the top-four this season then Declan Rice probably wants to move on to bigger things.

“It’s a shame because he suits that team, he loves his football but I can’t see him signing a new contract unless they are in the Champions League.

“They could do that this season. West Ham have been doing well, they should fancy themselves. They’re probably the fourth-best team in the league on current form.

“They have been flirting with fourth and I think it’s time, as a club with the squad they’ve got, they’ve got to look at getting into the top-four because it’s the best chance they’ll get.”

The Verdict: Why leave now?

At 22, Rice is in no rush to leave, and frankly, it makes no sense for him to move on in the near future, considering West Ham’s current form.

The midfielder is playing in a team full of confidence and consistency, and while a top-four finish may be tough, it isn’t completely out of the question, with victory over Liverpool taking the fourth-placed Hammers above Jurgen Klopp’s men.

It is only natural that Rice may eventually have his head turned by one of the country’s biggest and richest sides, but he is in such a good place at the moment that it would be a risk moving on, especially if the Irons continue to thrive in European football.

Rangers: Big January sales a possibility

Steven Gerrard may struggle to persuade the Rangers board not to cash in if January offers arrive for ‘key men’, The Daily Record’s Keith Jackson has said.

The lowdown

Rangers announced a £23.5m loss for 2020/21 on Friday, taking their total losses under the current board to £73.8m across six years (via The Athletic).

Last summer, the Gers made just £788,000 through player sales, with centre-back George Edmondson the only player to depart in exchange for a transfer fee.

Joe Aribo, who has started every Premiership and Europa League game for Rangers so far this season, is among the players being linked with a move away ahead of 2022. According to Football Insider, Crystal Palace are monitoring the midfielder, who is valued at more than £10m.

The latest

Writing in The Daily Record’s Monday Jury, Jackson recalled that Gerrard had previously ‘resisted all attempts’ to raise funds through the sales of his ‘key men’ at Ibrox.

However, the journalist added that if the ‘latest numbers’ are anything to go by, the Rangers boss ‘may have a job on his hands’ to successfully resist player sales in the event of a fresh ‘lucrative bid’.

Jackson’s colleague Craig Swan added that Rangers are ‘surely not in a position to spend and it’s time to sell’.

The verdict

The Rangers board need to tread carefully. There may be financial needs to address, but they must be wary of pushing Gerrard away amid the reported interest of Premier League clubs such as Aston Villa.

That attention is said to present a ‘major dilemma’ for the manager, but it could become an easier decision for him if he faces the possibility of losing his best players at Ibrox.

Indeed, Gerrard has already voiced frustration about the lack of funds made available to him, and the latest eight-figure loss from the club could hinder him further still.

AVFC: Fans react to Steven Gerrard training claim

A number of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to a training ground claim made by The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell regarding manager Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard was officially appointed as Dean Smith’s replacement last week and took his first training session on Monday.

His first game in charge at Villa Park comes against Brighton this weekend, with the 41-year-old hands-on at Bodymoor Heath in training.

Campbell, Rangers correspondent for The Athletic, shared a story on what it’s like to play for Gerrard. One part of his detailed report stood out, as he suggested that during his time at Ibrox, players would be put through five daily three-minute runs.

Gerrard and his coaches would reportedly watch closely, and if any player failed to hit certain heart-rate zones, he would walk into the middle of the pitch to “dig out” whoever was not putting the effort in.

Villa fans react

Total Villa shared that claim on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon. This is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with many sharing their positive thoughts.

For the last two days the Sri Lankans have been having indoor net sessions to acclimatise themselves and they followed the same pattern on day three.

West Brom fans on O’Shea ban

Some West Brom fans have been left fuming over some news that has been shared involving Dara O’Shea.

As shared by The Express & Star journalist Joseph Masi, O’Shea has now been banned for three matches and fined £7,500 for an incident that happened during the celebrations at Peterborough United back in August.

The central defender pushed a steward to the ground in wild celebration, which has now gotten him punished.

Perhaps luckily for O’Shea and the Baggies, the ban is immediate, which means that he will be banned for the next three games, despite already being out with a long-term injury.

Nonetheless, some Albion supporters were still fuming that he got a ban despite appearing not to seriously harm the steward, while others were left annoyed at how long the FA took to make their decision.

Geeves called as Siddle's standby

Australia remain confident that Peter Siddle will be fit for the third Test despite the selectors calling for the Tasmania fast bowler Brett Geeves as a backup

Brydon Coverdale in Perth14-Dec-2009Australia remain confident that Peter Siddle will be fit for the third Test despite the selectors calling for the Tasmania fast bowler Brett Geeves as a backup. Siddle bowled at full speed in the WACA nets on Monday and did not show any signs of the hamstring strain that troubled him in Adelaide, but much will depend on how he recovers after training.Following his bowling session, Siddle walked laps of the WACA with the team physio Alex Kountouris, who has spent much of the week working with Siddle in an effort to ensure he is fit for the Test starting on Wednesday. The wicketkeeper Brad Haddin said while Siddle was not yet a certain starter, the signs were positive.”There’s still a little bit of doubt around Peter,” Haddin said. “He bowled today, by all accounts he’s pulled up pretty well but with all these sort of injuries it’s not so much the first day, it’s how you pull up the next day. So he will have to be reassessed tomorrow but by all reports he pulled up pretty well after his spell today.”If Siddle does not prove his fitness before the Test, it would mean a likely debut for his Victorian team-mate Clint McKay, who was the 12th man in Adelaide and stayed with the squad for the Perth Test. The chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said that while Siddle was expected to be cleared, they were covering their bases by calling for Geeves, who was due to join the team in Perth on Monday night ahead of the series-deciding third game.”In order to ensure there is sufficient cover, a decision has been made to have Brett Geeves available as a standby player in Perth,” Hilditch said. “Brett gets his opportunity on the back of his recent strong performances in Sheffield Shield cricket and because the panel feels he will be well-suited to the conditions at the WACA should an opportunity present itself.”Geeves, a 27-year-old right armer, toured with the limited-overs team to South Africa earlier in the year, and has appeared in two ODIs and a Twenty20 international. However, his prospects seemed to suffer when he was not called up for the injury-hit visit to India in October and November.Five wickets in Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield win over Western Australia last week helped remind the selectors of his worth. In 39 first-class games he has taken 134 wickets at 34.41 and is well-known in Australian cricket circles for his lively blog. The country’s fast-bowling stocks are being tested with the contract holders Ben Hilfenhaus, Brett Lee and Stuart Clark on the injured list.

Fornals let West Ham down in Wolves defeat

West Ham United’s winning run came to a devastating end in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon as they were defeated 1-0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

A solitary goals from Raul Jimenez handed David Moyes’ men their first loss in eight games across all competitions.

The Irons were fortunate to be level at half-time after the home side dominated proceedings in the first 45 minutes and soon after the break, the Mexican talisman fired home from the edge of the box, and it was enough to punish the visitors.

There were several underwhelming displays across the pitch – for instance, Michail Antonio looked a little jaded following his cross-Atlantic duties this international break, whilst Tomas Soucek was way off the pace once again.

Even Pablo Fornals looked a shadow of himself this season and arguably, the Spanish attacking midfielder badly let down his manager and the side in the final third.

Despite playing in the no.10 role. the 25-year-old maestro registered ten fewer touches than even goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski (35), as per SofaScore, who also graded him their lowest-rated player at 6.3.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-west-ham-news-transfer-updates-gsb-kretinsky-moyes” title=”Read the latest West Ham news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

It’s no wonder he was hooked just before the hour mark as Moyes clearly had enough with what he was witnessing.

Fornals also failed to register a single key pass from just 13 passing attempts – substitute Nikola Vlasic managed the same number of passes, even though he played just 19 minutes.

The £18m-rated Spaniard also failed to record a single dribble or accurate cross and looked rather lightweight in possession, losing 66.6% of his duels. He even lost the ball once every three touches to compound his miserable afternoon at Molineux.

Jack Rosser of the Evening Standard was less than impressed with the Irons star either. In his post-match ratings column, the journalist claimed Fornals was ‘wasteful on the ball’ and ‘had no impact going forward.’

It can hardly be a surprise that Antonio looked terrible in attack when he wasn’t being supplied with enough quality.

Therefore, on the above evidence, Fornals badly let Moyes and co down this weekend. He will have to vastly improve heading into matches against Rapid Wien and Manchester City next week.
